To celebrate noted actor Akshaye Khanna, Subhash K Jha revisits his brilliant performance in 2007’s Gandhi, My Father. Plus, we hear the actor’s thoughts on this role.
In Feroz Abbas Khan’s Gandhi, My Father, Akshaye Khanna was stunning as Mahatma Gandhi’s troubled son Harilal.
Father to the nation, but not to his own son. Great theme.
Huge historical resonances as the father and son happen to be Mahatma Gandhi and his little-known son Harilal. What interesting possibilities of drama open up before our eyes as we think of the father and son locked in a mutual admonition society against the backdrop of a demanding, politically anguished nation?
Gandhi, My Father attempts to convey the jumbo-sized canvas of the fight that the Father Of The Nation fought within and outside his home. The director, Feroz Abbas Khan, had his own creative battle to fight. Simply put, you can...

The following review contains no spoilers for “Pushpa 2: The Rule” apart from what is contained in teasers, trailers, and lyrical song videos. The review is based on the Telugu-language IMAX release, subtitled in English.
The question of “What is the biggest Indian film of all time” has many different potential answers. International gross? “Dangal”. Domestic? “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.” Footfalls? Likely “Sholay” or “Mughal-e-Azam”, though “Baahubali 2” has a claim there too. In a year that has been frankly disappointing for mass cinema overall, cinephiles have watched the promise of the next “1000cr Club” movie bandied about for films that struggled to earn a tenth of that amount, or whose inflated budget made even a record-breaking gross barely break even. Beloved directors known for making mass films with sophisticated twists have let down audiences with trite and outdated content and stories that seem to only exist to set up a sequel.

In this throwback interview Kamal Hassan spoke to Subhash K Jha about his brilliant film Hey Ram, which is hitting 25 years since it released in theatres.
When Hey Ram was released, you were accused of being both anti and pro-Muslim?
That really hurt. I was very angry. But anger sometimes heightens creative powers. Hey Ram failed for unknown reasons. I didn’t have paddings in Hey Ram. I had a free fall. They were saying to arrest Kamal Haasan under the National Security Act (laughs). I was supposed to be talking against Mahatma Gandhi in my film. They began reading anti-Gandhian signals even before the film reached the Censor Board. It was all very silly. The censors in Chennai objected to certain lines and scenes in Hey Ram. The line spoken by Gandhiji in my film goes like this, “I don’t drink any dairy products. If God wanted man...

On October 2nd, we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, marking the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, a global symbol of peace, non-violence, and justice. Born in 1869, Gandhi’s philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha (truth and resistance) transformed India’s struggle for independence into a moral revolution. His unwavering commitment to civil disobedience inspired global movements for human rights, from Martin Luther King Jr. in America to Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Gandhi’s ideology transcended political boundaries, leaving a lasting imprint on the world—and even the film industry. Filmmakers across continents have sought to capture his life and ideals on screen, creating enduring works that not only tell the story of Gandhi but also remind audiences of the power of truth, empathy, and resistance in the face of injustice. Through cinema, Gandhi’s legacy continues to inspire generations, proving that his teachings remain as relevant today as ever. To honor his memory,...

There are several films being made by Hindi filmmakers about historical figures with differing political ideologies. Hindi filmmakers love to put across stories of many freedom fighters from across the country who had fought tooth and nail against the British for independence. Only a few filmmakers were able to bring justice to these characters on screen. The finest example would be Sardar Udham Singh, directed by Shoojit Sircar. To some extent, even Rang De Basanti beautifully incorporated the lives of the freedom fighters into the narrative of youngsters taking up arms against the system that wronged them. The plethora of Bhagat Singh movies that came out allow the audience to refresh their memories of some of the revered revolutionary martyrs of the country. Sadly, only a few of them left an impact. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, 23 March 1931: Shaheed, Shaheed-e-Azam, Mangal Pandey: The Rising, Hey Ram, and Chittagong...

Indian studio Applause Entertainment’s upcoming big-budget series “Gandhi” aims to humanize the Mahatma.
The first season covers the formative years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life as a law student in London and later as lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa, during which time he conceived the ideas that ultimately led India to independence from British rule. Gandhi became known as Mahatma, or great soul, for his leading part in the independence movement.
The series sees the reunion of Applause, director Hansal Mehta and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) who plays Gandhi, after hit SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (2020).
The benchmark for on-screen depictions of Gandhi remains Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982), which won eight Oscars.
“It’ll be complementary in that sense, because Attenborough had some three hours to tell the story, which is a big story and a big life,...

Shah Rukh Khan & Rajinikanth’s Rejection History Goes Way Beyond Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Thalaivar 171(Photo Credit –Instagram/Facebook)
Shah Rukh Khan has rejected a Rajinikanth film. That’s it, that’s the news for the day. It is surprising as well as shocking since who says no to Anna, right? However, what is more surprising it that the actor did not give a second thought as well, before rejecting the role since he was very sure about one thing – not doing cameos anymore.
If you don’t remember clearly, then we might brush your memory a little. In the past few years, Srk has done way more cameos than films. This includes his presence in Brahmastra, Rocketry, and Tiger 3. In fact, he is even expected to have a cameo in Suhana Khan’s next film, which is being directed by Sujoy Ghosh.

But the Tamil audience is familiar with actor Kamal Haasan’s oeuvre. What we may not know is that the limp this character has — the naive, repulsive and yet endearing Chappani from director Barathiraja’s 16 Vayadhinile — is Kamal Haasan’s improvisation and was not part of the script. You must have laughed out loud when Kamal’s character, dressed like lord Shiva in a scene-within-a-scene in the film Pammal K Sambandam, gives a hilarious reason for not remembering his lines while staying in character — the...

Ever since, I have been torn between feelings of love and hate for this much-hyped movie. Hey Ram was released in Februrary 2000. My quarrels were mostly about sex and violence. For instance, the scene in which Aparna (Rani Mukerji) is sexually assaulted and left to die by Altaf, the Muslim tailor, was horrifying. The subsequent sequence through the streets of Kolkata as Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan) goes on a rampage of revenge is also harrowing to watch. The portrait of the Kolkata (then Calcutta) riots included scenes in which Muslims were slaughtered by Hindus and Sikhs. The central rape scene of the initial portion and...

Academy AwardsOf the 52 entries sent by India so far, only 20 have been in languages other than Hindi – what explains this? Sowmya RajendranIndia has decided that the 2019 entry for the Best International Feature Film category in the Academy Awards will be Gully Boy, a Hindi film directed by Zoya Akhtar. Directed by Kamal Haasan
Rating: ****
First things first. Kamal Haasan’s enormously controversial film doesn’t hurt Muslim sentiments. In fact it doesn’t hurt the sentiments of any section of the people except those party-poopers who think having a ball at the movies went out of style with Sholay and Chachi 420.
Leave aside its sobering take on global warfare, Vishwaroop is one helluva entertainer. If you’ve forgotten what edge-of-the-seat entertainment mean, then it’s time to rediscover that pleasure. Stylish and substantial the narrative weaves and winds its way into coherent and compulsive threads that bring together the theme of international espionage with the more sensitive issue of the Islamic and the personal identity of a man whose heroic stature grows out of a sense of commitment to the country and to world peace .

One the most keenly anticipated films of the year, Talaash has hit the big screen. Directed by Reema Kagti, who wrote the screenplay with Zoya Akhtar, the film stars three of the best in the business Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherji. We know you are all keen to know our thoughts and with Talaash being a murder mystery, we won’t expend time (and dreaded spoilers) in giving you an outline of the plot, let’s go straight to the bigger picture!
In typical Aamir style, the offering, genre and set up is different from not only his peers, but also from his previous works. The film’s characters are made of tortured individuals, each with a deep rooted pain of their own. With that Aamir’s performance oozes angst, guilt and torment, conveyed through his eyes and body language throughout. At times I felt I was watching...

Shah Rukh Khan is in a dilemma. He has to choose between the remakes of two Tamil remakes, A R Murogadoss' Ramanna and Gautham Menon's Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu. Both offer the picky superstar Khan a chance to do something he hasn't done before. A South Indian remake with parts that he hasn't tried before. Says a source, "While Murugadoss' film casts Srk as a social crusader, Menon's film casts him as a cop, a role he has played just once in Shashilal Nair's One 2 Ka 4 and that too a plain-clothed cop. Srk has never got a chance to get into khaki uniform. This, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu will let him do." Indeed, Gautham Menon informs that Shah Rukh is the only choice for the Hindi remake of Vettaiyaadi Vilaiyaadi. Contrary to reports, Salman Khan is not up for consideration for the Hindi adaptation of the Gautham Menon's 2006 Tamil hit Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu.
