The question of “What is the biggest Indian film of all time” has many different potential answers. International gross? “Dangal”. Domestic? “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.” Footfalls? Likely “Sholay” or “Mughal-e-Azam”, though “Baahubali 2” has a claim there too. In a year that has been frankly disappointing for mass cinema overall, cinephiles have watched the promise of the next “1000cr Club” movie bandied about for films that struggled to earn a tenth of that amount, or whose inflated budget made even a record-breaking gross barely break even. Beloved directors known for making mass films with sophisticated twists have let down audiences with trite and outdated content and stories that seem to only exist to set up a sequel.

In this throwback interview Kamal Hassan spoke to Subhash K Jha about his brilliant film Hey Ram, which is hitting 25 years since it released in theatres.

When Hey Ram was released, you were accused of being both anti and pro-Muslim?

That really hurt. I was very angry. But anger sometimes heightens creative powers. Hey Ram failed for unknown reasons. I didn’t have paddings in Hey Ram. I had a free fall. They were saying to arrest Kamal Haasan under the National Security Act (laughs). I was supposed to be talking against Mahatma Gandhi in my film. They began reading anti-Gandhian signals even before the film reached the Censor Board. It was all very silly. The censors in Chennai objected to certain lines and scenes in Hey Ram. Indian studio Applause Entertainment’s upcoming big-budget series “Gandhi” aims to humanize the Mahatma.

The first season covers the formative years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life as a law student in London and later as lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa, during which time he conceived the ideas that ultimately led India to independence from British rule. Gandhi became known as Mahatma, or great soul, for his leading part in the independence movement.

The series sees the reunion of Applause, director Hansal Mehta and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) who plays Gandhi, after hit SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (2020).

The benchmark for on-screen depictions of Gandhi remains Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982), which won eight Oscars.

Costa-Gavras

The 15th Mumbai Film Festival will bestow its Lifetime Achievement award on French filmmaker Costa-Gavras and actor Kamal Haasan.

Gavras is best known for his political thrillers, such as the Best Foreign Language Oscar-winner Z (1969); Missing (1982), for which Gavras won the Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) Oscar; The Little Apocalypse (1993) and Amen (2002).

The Greek-born Gavras has also been conferred with the title of French Knighthood. Since 2007, he has also been serving as the President of Cinémathèque Française, one of the world’s largest film archives.

“We are honored to confer the Lifetime Achievement Award to Costa-Gavras. His films have been loved and celebrated by millions of cinema lovers worldwide. We are humbled that he has agreed to receive this award,” said Shyam Benegal, Chairman, Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (Mami).

Mumbai, Aug 6: Known for his performances in films like "Hey Ram" and "Chandni Bar", actor Atul Kulkarni is set to debut on Hindi General Entertainment Channel (Gec) with crime-based show "Savdhaan India - Mumbai Fights Back".

Beamed on Life Ok, "Savdhaan India" brings real-life crime stories on TV and the current focus is Mumbai. The actor, who will host the segment, feels it is important to sensitise citizens about crime rates in the city.

"I am happy to be associated with a show like 'Savdhaan India'. Being a Mumbaikar myself, I feel it is extremely important to make my fellow citizens aware of the crime rates in the city.

Chennai, July 19: One of Tamil cinema's celebrated lyricist, an evergreen poet, Vaali, who ruled the film industry for over five decades, passed away here Friday. He was 82.

He died due to respiratory illness in a private hospital.

Vaali, who acted in Tamil films such as "Sathya", "Hey Ram" and "Parthale Paravasam", had also penned the biographies of Rama, Krishna and Ramanuja. He even wrote an autobiography titled "Naanum Indha Nootrandum".

Born as T.S Rangarajan, he rechristened himself as Vaali, since he was a devoted fan of artist Mali.

Before picking up the pen to write, he worked with All India Radio (Air) for.

New Delhi, May 28: Veteran actor Kamal Haasan, who has experimented with his looks in films like "Chachi 420" and "Hey Ram", gave his inputs on his daughter Shruti's look

for "D-Day", in which she sports a distinct scar.

In "D-Day", directed by Nikhil Advani, Shruti plays Suraiya, a prostitute.

As part of the character's look, Shruti required to have a scar on her face, and her father is said to have helped her get it right.

"The story of the scar dates back to Suraiya's past, when she entered the world of sex trade at 16. She was given this scar when her face was cut open by a pimp," said a source close.

Chennai, May 12: Bollywood baadshah Shahrukh Khan was conferred with Chevalier Sivaji Award, constituted after veteran Tamil actor Sivaji Ganeshan, Saturday here at the 7th edition of Vijay awards.

Shahrukh received the award from the hands of Kamal Haasan, Vijay and members from the family of Sivaji Ganeshan.

"I have enjoyed working with Kamal Haasan and Ajith Kumar in my career. I may be the owner of Kolkata Knight Riders in Ipl cricket league, but my favorite team is Chennai Super Kings," said Shahrukh while receiving his award.

Shahrukh, 47, worked with Kamal Haasan in Tamil-Hindi bilingual "Hey Ram" and with Ajith.

Omg Oh My God (2012) is the first film to release from the newly launched production house Grazing Goat Pictures which is co-owned by Akshay Kumar. According to its trailer, the film deals with a shopkeeper (Rawal) who strongly disbelieves in God. Consequently Kumar (who plays God in this film) sets out to alter his ways and beliefs. The soundtrack to this film has been composed by Himesh Reshammiya, who has given us recent soundtracks such as Bol Bachchan (2012) and the colossal hit Bodyguard (2011). The lyrics are penned by Shabbir Ahmed, who has written songs for films such as Dangerous Ishhq (2012) and Luck (2009). Shah Rukh Khan is in a dilemma. He has to choose between the remakes of two Tamil remakes, A R Murogadoss' Ramanna and Gautham Menon's Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu. Both offer the picky superstar Khan a chance to do something he hasn't done before. A South Indian remake with parts that he hasn't tried before. Says a source, "While Murugadoss' film casts Srk as a social crusader, Menon's film casts him as a cop, a role he has played just once in Shashilal Nair's One 2 Ka 4 and that too a plain-clothed cop. Srk has never got a chance to get into khaki uniform. This, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu will let him do." Indeed, Gautham Menon informs that Shah Rukh is the only choice for the Hindi remake of Vettaiyaadi Vilaiyaadi. New Delhi, July 2 – Having completed 50 years in Indian cinema, veteran actor Kamal Haasan has written, acted in and produced numerous movies but directed only two – ‘Hey Ram’ and ‘Virumandi’. The multi-faceted star now reveals he is craving to wield the megaphone again.
