F1: The Movie Social Media Reactions Hail It As The Top Gun: Maverick Of Racing Movies
Image
F1: The Movie has already been reviewed by Formula 1's drivers, and now critics are weighing in. Even looking beyond the "please quote me" reactions below, there's enough praise here to safely say that filmgoers are in for a fun ride at the theaters later this month.

It's worth pointing out that nearly everyone here seems to be new to Formula 1, so what fans will make of what looks to be an expectedly Hollywood-ized approach to the sport remains to be seen.

However, while Formula 1 has a massive fanbase, it appears the idea with F1: The Movie is to create new fans, similar to Netflix's popular Drive to Survive docuseries (which typically plays fast and loose with what really takes place on track).

The biggest takeaway from these reactions has to be the comparisons to Top Gun: Maverick, filmmaker Joseph Kosinski's last movie. That received rave reviews...

Documentary Review: A Century in Sound (2024) by Nick Dwyer and Tu Neill
Image
The quality of the cafes and restaurants in your area have a lot to do with the quality of living. Also, since many of these locations have been around for quite some time, they share some history with the country or the town/city they are in. Upon visiting your hometown, it is quite common to look for the places where you went to dinner with friends, had your afternoon coffee or tea or relaxed and had a few drinks with friends. However, this is only one facet of the cafes and bars New Zealand directors Nick Dwyer and Tu Neill focus on in their documentary “A Century in Sound”, which explores a number of “ongaku kissas” in Tokyo. In these places, the music and the quality of the sound system are in the foreground, whereas beverages and food come secondary.

A Century in Sound is screening at Nippon Connection

‘A Magnificent Life’ Review: Sylvain Chomet’s Beautifully Animated but Clumsily Scripted Love Letter to Marcel Pagnol
Image
A Magnificent Life (Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol), a biopic of French playwright-filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, clearly represents a labor of love for writer-director Sylvain Chomet. His first animated feature since 2010’s The Illusionist, it features the gorgeous style first showcased in 2003’s award-winning The Triplets of Belleville. If its storytelling proves more rudimentary, hewing closely to the stylistic formula endemic to the genre, the ample visual pleasures prove their own reward. Premiering at Cannes, the film should find appreciative audiences in its native France, where its subject is best known.

The story, told in flashback, begins in 1956 Paris, where the 61-year-old Pagnol (voiced by Matthew Gravelle in the English-language version) is despairing that his work has gone out of fashion. Although he intends to give up writing to pursue his hobby of inventing (he’s working on a perpetual-motion machine), he’s asked by a magazine editor to pen a memoir.

Bono: Stories of Surrender Review – A Soul Laid Bare
Image
In its arresting black-and-white palette, Bono: Stories of Surrender unfolds as a solitary confession given theatrical weight. The film captures the stripped-down essence of Bono’s one-man stage show, where spotlight and shadow trace the contours of a life lived in pursuit of meaning.

Adapted from Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, this filmed performance first took shape at New York’s Beacon Theatre. There, Bono transformed memoir pages into spoken-word sequences, punctuated by pared-back renditions of U2 anthems. The transition from intimate theater to cinematic medium hinges on director Andrew Dominik’s discerning eye and Erik Messerschmidt’s sculptural lighting. Their collaboration shifts a bare stage into a philosophical arena, inviting viewers to ponder mortality, ambition, and the silent spaces between confession and art.

At its core, the film promises an inward gaze: an invitation to witness an artist confronting his own myths. Monologue and melody entwine in a sparse setting—just a microphone,...

Image
Roy Thomas Baker, the revered British record producer who helmed Queen’s first four albums and later worked alongside acts including The Cars, Devo, and Cheap Trick, among others, has died at the age of 78.

Born in Hampstead, London, Baker got his start as a second engineer for Gus Dudgeon and Tony Visconti, working on recordings by David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Ginger Baker’s Air Force, The Who, and more. He eventually set out on his own, developing and producing a then-unknown band named Queen.

Baker produced Queen’s first four studio albums—Queen (1973), Queen II (1974), Sheer Heart Attack (1974), and A Night at the Opera (1975)—which yielded early hits such as “Killer Queen” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” He also helmed their seventh album, 1978’s Jazz, which featured the single “Don’t Stop Me Now.” Queen’s Roger Taylor said of Baker, “I think he brought a certain amount of discipline...

Pamela Anderson Has Heard From ‘a Lot of Great Directors’ Following ‘The Last Showgirl’ Success
Image
Pamela Anderson isn’t naming names, but she tells me that she’s heard from “a lot of great directors” following her awards buzzy work in “The Last Showgirl.”

“It’s exciting because I want to keep working,” Anderson said Tuesday at the Golden Globes First-Time Nominee Luncheon at the Montage in Beverly Hills.

However, she insists all the praise and attention isn’t going to her head. “I’m going to pretend that I belong here,” Anderson said. “It’s all so surreal. Sometimes I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and I’m like, ‘I’m a Golden Globes nominee – how did that happen?’”

She said she’s feeling more secure as awards season ramps up. “It’s getting better, but it’s still a little hard to walk into these rooms and and see people who you’ve admired for so long,” Anderson said.

10 Stories Bel-Air Season 4 Must Wrap Up Before The Show Ends
Image
Bel-Air has just one more season to go, and there are a few stories the show needs to wrap up in its fourth season. Bel-Air is the reimagining of Will Smith's 1990 sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. The series follows Will, a teenager from Philadelphia who moves to Bel-Air due to some issues with a gang member from his neighborhood. The Bel-Air cast includes both new and old characters who were part of the original TV show.

Although there are stark differences between Bel-Air and the original sitcom, the new maintains the same themes of family, friendship, and love. Despite Bel-Air season 3 ending on a cliffhanger, there were still questions about whether the show would be renewed for a fourth season. Fortunately, it's been confirmed that Bel-Air will be returning for its final run, giving the showrunners a chance to answer questions that were left open in the show's third season.

Stanley Kubrick Called This 1979 Movie The Best Film He's Ever Seen
Image
Kubrick's admiration for All That Jazz as the best movie is unusual, but actually makes a lot of sense. All That Jazz's legacy stems from its chaotic yet emotionally compelling narrative, mirroring the turbulent life of Bob Fosse. Despite being a departure from Kubrick's usual style, the dark and introspective nature of All That Jazz resonated with the filmmaker.

Throughout his career, Stanley Kubrick became known for his intense and often dark films, so at first glance, the movie he deemed to be the best may come as a surprise. Considered one of the greatest film directors of all time, Kubrick made movies from 1952 until his death in 1999. Stanley Kubrick's best movies are all lauded as classics, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to The Shining. The director's unique style and innovative filmmaking have had long-lasting effects on Hollywood. Not only did Stanley Kubrick make stand-out movies, but his influences were also rather distinct.

The First Critics Reactions to ‘Alien: Romulus’ Are In, and They Are the Same as the Audience Reactions

Most people don’t know that the Alien franchise was actually created by the late writer Dan O’Bannon and his colleague Ronald Shusett, who wrote the original story. Ridley Scott made the franchise popular with his Alien movie, and the rest is history. Alien is one of the best and most beloved sci-fi and horror franchises today.

It has since expanded its universe and explored the origins of its own universe, but the most recent installment – the upcoming Alien: Romulus – is back in the present timeline of the universe, as it will be set between Alien and Aliens. The movie is set to come out on August 16, 2024, and after having seen the first fan reactions, we can now report that the first critics have also released their initial reactions online.

This was expected, as it usually goes like this, and in light of our earlier report on the fan reactions,...

Arizona Coyotes Owner Dissolves Remnants of Franchise; Where Will Utah's New NHL Team Stream?

The Utah Hockey Club could decide to offer its games on an in-market streaming platform, as the Utah Jazz have done.

The sad saga of the Arizona Coyotes has come to an end. According to Sportico, the NHL club will formally be dissolved in the coming weeks by its owner Alex Meruelo, after efforts to rebuild the team were scuttled by its inability to secure a parcel of land on which to build a new stadium. The team formerly known as the Coyotes have already relocated to Utah, and I’ll give you my best guess on how you’ll be able to watch the team’s games without a cable subscription below.

Key Details: A new Arizona Coyotes expansion team was a possibility if the team could build a new arena to house it within the next years. The Utah Hockey Club has announced a deal to broadcast games on the Scripps-owned Kupx-tv.

Ken Burns Is Still Telling American Stories, Even with Leonardo da Vinci
Image
It’s hard to believe that Ken Burns has had a rule for what subject matter he takes on, given that the diversity of his work ranges from “The Civil War” and “Vietnam” to “Baseball” and “Jazz.” But he is finally breaking through that limitation — sort of.

Burns’s latest two-part documentary on Leonard da Vinci, a collaboration with his daughter Sarah Burns and son-in-law David McMahon, is his first non-American subject and has to be by default; the United States wouldn’t be founded for more than 250 years after da Vinci’s death in 1519. But Burns is claiming the Italian polymath for America, anyway, or at least he did so with tongue in cheek at his talk, “In Their Shoes with Ken Burns,” given at the Nantucket Film Festival, which concludes June 24.

“The thing that was my balm throughout the whole [filmmaking] period is that a contemporary of Leonardo’s in Florence was Amerigo Vespucci,...

Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, who won a 2004 Oscar for “Finding Neverland,” died Tuesday in Krakow, the Polish Music Foundation announced. He was 71 and had suffered from Multiple System Atrophy (Msa) in recent years.

Also among Kaczmarek’s 50-plus film and television scores, mostly from the 1990s and 2000s, were “Unfaithful,” “Bliss,” “Aimee and Jaguar,” “The Visitor” and “Get Low.” He also scored the lavish four-part French-Italian miniseries of “War and Peace” in 2007.

Kaczmarek had one of the most unusual backgrounds of any film composer of his time. Born in Konin in 1953, he was educated as a lawyer. But he abandoned a planned career as a diplomat to compose music for an experimental theater company, headed by avant-garde theater director Jerzy Grotowski, in Poznan during the 1970s.

He formed his own ensemble, the Orchestra of the Eighth Day, which toured Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s, releasing an LP,...

Image
Autobots in the live-action Transformers franchise face brutal deaths, adding stakes to the cinematic experience. From Jazz to Optimus Prime, beloved Autobots have met their demise at the hands of Decepticons and humans. Characters like Cliffjumper and Wheeljack have emotionally impactful deaths, highlighting the sacrifices made by Autobots.

There have been dozens of Autobots and Decepticons seen in live-action in The Transformers franchise however, not all of them manage to survive, and there have been many Decepticons and Autobots alike that have died. Starting in 2007 with Michael Bay's Transformers, the live-action movies based on the popular animated series and toy line have brought many characters from both to the big screen, including fan-favorites like Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, and Starscream.

While many Autobots appear in multiple Transformers movies, the franchise has killed many of them off. The live-action Transformers timeline is full of dead Autobots, partly because this ups the cinematic stakes,...

Who are the Grammy darlings the academy can’t resist: Billie Eilish, Bruno Mars … but not Taylor Swift?
Image
I throw around the concept of “Grammy darlings” a lot, but what exactly constitutes a Grammy darling? Is it just an artist who doesn’t lose Grammys often, like U2, Adele or Bruno Mars? Let’s go through a few top names.

Beyoncé: Darling

Listen, the most awarded person in Grammy history is definitely a darling. Granted, she has yet to win Album of the Year. However, more impressively, all of her projects have won at least one Grammy. Most have won multiple, including “Dangerously in Love,” “Lemonade,” and “Renaissance.” Beyoncé also gets nominations for pretty much anything she submits, and will likely become the first artist to nab nominations in rap, rock, R&b, dance, pop and country. On top of all that, it’s rare for Beyoncé to miss nominations in the general field, especially with no nominations review committees anymore to potentially force her out.

Kings From Queens: The Run Dmc Story TV Review
Image
Plot: A three-part documentary series chronicling the iconic forefathers of hip-hop, Run Dmc. This unique series will take you back to the 1980s, when Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons, Darryl “Dmc” McDaniels, and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell cultivated a one-of-a-kind sound that took not only Queens, but the world, by storm.

Review: In college, a professor made us watch Ken Burns’ series Jazz. At first, I rolled my eyes at the prospect of watching an eighteen-hour documentary about one genre of music. I was shocked when I became engrossed by the series and began appreciating jazz as never before. Few documentaries can harness an entire genre in such a way, but the new three-part series Kings From Queens: The Run Dmc Story manages to encapsulate the origin of rap by focusing on one of the most legendary duos to ever perform. With direct participation from Joseph Simmons and Daryl McDaniels,...

‘Soundtrack To A Coup d’Etat’ Review: Experimental Documentary Deftly Explores The Connections Between Jazz & The Congo [Sundance]
Image
A formally rigorous and free-associative dive into a decade’s worth of political fighting in the Congo, from roughly 1955 to 1965, Johan Grimonprez’s “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” is a fascinating and sprawling historical overview. Eschewing the usual mix of contextual talking heads, the Belgian filmmaker and multimedia artist instead adopts its narrative approach from the jazz that flows freely throughout the film and helps frame the political struggles of the Congo.

Image
When Zeenat Aman in her Insta post paying tribute to Feroze Khan has written that the Oxford’s word for 2023 is Rizz which means charisma and Feroze Khan was the star who had the charisma or the Rizz. Expanding the analogy further, in the world of music, it was Rd Burman aka Pancham who oozed of risk or the charisma through his music. On the eve of his death anniversary here is a tribute to the legend-Pancham.

Most of us in either of the night spots or for welcoming the new year at home would have ushered the occasion getting drooled and swooned to either of the multitude of compositions that Rahul Dev Burman aka Pancham has left for us, but how many from amongst us remember that just after four days, when we herald the new year, falls his death anniversary.

Phoenix Mercury Viewership Reportedly Rises Nearly 6x After Move from Rsn to Broadcast; Others Could Benefit As Well
Image
Other teams that have departed cable-based regional sports networks this year may be able to expect a similar bump, according to findings from Nielsen.

The news that the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury could be leaving Bally Sports Arizona this spring was hardly a surprise to those who had been following the struggles of Bally Sports regional sports networks (RSNs). But what did shock many observers was the fact that once those teams were free of their former Rsn, they opted to show their games on local broadcast channels instead.

The Phoenix Mercury drew almost six times as many viewers to games now that they’re on local broadcast channels as opposed to cable. Other sports teams leaving cable for broadcast channels might see similar improvements in ratings. Companion in-market streaming services will help teams reach more fans than they ever did on cable.
