Saibâ shiti Ôedo 808

10 Dumbest Anime of All Time, Ranked
Image
The anime medium has several genres that range from pulse-pounding action to heartbreaking romance. There's also a plethora of comedy anime, with the best of these having humor that's so ridiculous that it's hilarious. Even beyond this genre, however, some anime are just downright dumb, namely if they aren't meant to be laughed at.

Some of the dumbest anime blur the lines between intentional and unintentional comedies, being able to be laughed at for their storytelling decisions. Others are true in these comedic efforts, while others are doomed because of the quality of their English dubs, resulting in unintended gags that are still infamous to this day. Even worse are those that can't be taken seriously at all due to how seriously they take themselves, particularly when the animation doesn't match the tone of the anime.

This 28-Year-Old Kurt Russell Thriller Feels More Like Metal Gear Solid Than Escape From New York Ever Did
Image
Kurt Russell's role in Escape from New York paved the way for characters like Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid. Executive Decision, starring Russell, feels more like Metal Gear Solid's gameplay with its slow-burn tension and strategic elements. Russell's refusal to voice Snake in Metal Gear Solid 3 shows his commitment to creating new characters over revisiting old ones.

A 1990s Kurt Russell thriller has more in common with the Metal Gear Solid franchise than its more obvious inspiration, Escape from New York. John Carpenter and Kurt Russell's movies were a truly blessed run, resulting in classics like The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China. Their first theatrical outing, Escape from New York made Russell a movie star, with his role as nihilistic ex-soldier Snake Plissken shattering his typecasting as a Disney teen actor. The film's incredible premise, Russell's lead performance and Carpenter's taut direction made it a...

Who was Buichi Terasawa?
Image
Buichi Terasawa is an unsung creator in the anime and manga worlds; he recently passed away, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to influence the industry. Terasawa's iconic works, such as Cobra and Goku Midnight Eye, were examples of more "adult" manga that had gritty storylines, mature content, and unique art styles. Terasawa's creations—particularly Cobra—inspired various adaptations, merchandise, and even other franchises like Devil May Cry and The Fifth Element, solidifying Terasawa's impact and widespread recognition.

The anime and manga worlds are mourning the passing of one of their most unsung creators. Buichi Terasawa recently died after a series of health issues, though his legacy is sure to live on. A pioneer in more adult-oriented manga, his most popular work is one of the best-selling manga of all time.

Terasawa's works were popular outside Japan, as well, with one manga and anime series in particular making a...

What Happened to Genocyber's Manga?
Image
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, there were numerous anime OVAs (original video animation) that told grisly, gritty, and grimy stories. Full of blood, guts, gore, and all manner of other "adult" content, these projects were instrumental in positioning anime as the "grown-up" cartoon alternative in the West. Some of these Ova movies and TV shows were based on manga, though in some cases, this source material was never actually completed.

A great example of this was Genocyber, which is a somewhat infamous science fiction horror anime. As with others of its era, this Ova was premier "late nite" fare, namely due to its graphic content. It's also defined solely by its adaptation, with the actual manga that the series is based on still being incomplete to this day.

The 2000′s: A Vital Decade in Horror Cinema
Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.

Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.

While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...
