The shadow of Xu Zhonglin's influential novel “The Investiture of the Gods” looms long over Chinese popular culture. As one of the most well-regarded vernacular epics since the 16th century, its heady blend of history and mythology has been a creatively enticing gauntlet for many filmmakers. Before now, the last big-budget stab at the material was 2016's 3D flop “League of Gods”, led by an all-star cast including Jet Li, Tony Leung Ka-Fai and Louis Koo, and still somehow won Worst Picture at that year's Golden Broom Awards. The crown now lies heavy on the head of filmmaker Wuershan, a director experienced in the fantasy genre (his “Painted Skin 2: The Resurrection” was at one time China's highest grossing movie domestically) but still holding the great responsibility of condensing 100 chapters of beloved high-concept magic and action into a movie…or three. Does the first chapter, “Kingdom of Storms”, capture...

Carrie unlocks the fast travel system in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, making returning to already-discovered towns and dungeons much easier. Some of the main quests require backtracking, and you may also want to shop at old locations.
Carrie is also a capable fighter who specializes in Light and Dark magic. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes uses a combat system similar to Suikoden games. This makes it important to have at least one or two powerful casters in the backlines.

Jrpg fans are a starving lot, stuck in an era of replaying their golden oldies and praying the latest indie game on Steam at least partially sticks the landing. Even recommending the classics can be difficult. Many of the best games have never received a revival port, or, worse, the revival is still up in the air. That’s the fate of the Suikoden franchise, whose first two games received a Japan-only PSP port in 2006 and which was originally meant to be released on modern consoles last year.
It’s another indignity for a series whose Western introduction in 1996 was festooned with an infamously bad replacement cover because Konami thought Westerners didn’t like manga. Or something.
Yet the turn-based franchise, which consistently featured a cast of over 100 characters to collect and a lively if simple settlement-building system, remains beloved to those hardcore RPG devotees that can find it. Continually...

Combat is fun once systems develop, but lacks quality of life features. Game runs poorly on Switch with lag, and aesthetics are sometimes mundane. Despite a great narrative and character design, micromanaging issues hinder gameplay.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, developed by Rabbit & Bear Studios and published by 505 Games, is a game that knows exactly what it wants to do. A love letter to the Suikoden series with the promise of more modern technology to produce it (even while deliberately sticking to the same familiar aesthetics and systems) sounds good on paper - in execution, however, it's a lot more of a mixed bag, with some downright maddening or baffling decisions that hamper an otherwise decent game.

Manor Lords releases as an Xbox Game Pass day one release, with one huge caveat. Slavic Magic is the developer of the game and a one-person studio. There are a few reasons that players could be slightly hesitant to go all in on Manor Lords upon its initial release.
Xbox Game Pass is getting yet another exciting day-one addition on April 26, but despite how incredible this game looks like it could be, there's also some cause for caution. Getting to play new games as soon as they release without a purchase is one of the biggest draws of Xbox Game Pass, which opens up a large library of games for a subscription fee. The service is available on both Xbox systems and PC, and it often makes it possible to play games on either platform.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes takes notes from classic RPGs as the spiritual successor to the Suikoden series. Despite delays, Eiyuden Chronicle is a bigger game than expected, with new content promised from Kickstarter stretch goals. The game will release on April 23, 2024, on multiple platforms, with a digital deluxe edition, pre-order bonuses, and unique rewards for prequel players.
After a long wait, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is finally coming soon. A turn-based RPG by legendary director Yoshitaka Murayama, Eiyuden Chronicle has been in development since 2020 - although it's arguably been decades in the making. With gorgeous 2.5D graphics, a lush score, and a cast of characters as diverse as its title implies, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes looks to be a total throwback to the golden age of turn-based RPGs, a rarity in the modern era.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was funded via Kickstarter, where it greatly exceeded all its funding targets.

Though it's seemingly a cute and child-friendly series, the Made in Abyss anime is full of gut-wrenching, harrowing storytelling. This has allowed the franchise to go on for over a decade. Soon, the anime and movie versions of the franchise became very popular. Both of these adaptations are still going, as is the manga source material. There's no better time to get into the series in any of its forms. The second season of the Made in Abyss anime, titled The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, dropped in July 2022.
Made in Abyss had already captivated audiences with its beautiful art and deep world building, among other things. As a result, those who missed the bandwagon the first time around might need to do some catching-up. There are some important pieces of media to watch in order for anime viewers to watch in order to fully enjoy Made in Abyss.

2023 should feature a variety of promising indie game releases, with Team Cherry's Hollow Knight: Silksong a major headliner. However, there's good representation all around for 2023, from JRPGs that refresh to action platformers and everything in between. Supergiant Games' Hades 2 should be making its initial appearance, offering cathartic and quick-paced rogue-like gameplay, as well as nostalgic throwbacks like Sea of Stars that look to refresh the beloved Jrpg style of the '90s.

A Shaw Brothers production, this movie is about Wu Sung, a famous character from the classic novel ‘Outlaws of the Marsh’ or ‘The Water Margin’. Often described as a muscular and respectable man, Wu Sung also likes his wine; however, he’s greatly renowned for killing a tiger with his bare hands.
At the start of “The Delightful Forest”, Wu Song is out to avenge his brother, upon learning that he was killed by his adulteress sister-in-law Pan Jin Lian and her lover Ximen Qing. Since he has already killed Pan, it’s time to settle the score with Ximen Qing. Being a righteous man who owns up to whatever he does, Wu Song is sent to prison after killing Ximen. Interestingly, with the help of an officer Shih En, he is treated exceedingly well there and even escapes the traditional punishment. In return, Wu Song agrees...

The story of Pan Jin Lian (nicknamed the Golden Lotus) and her lover, Ximen Qing is again given another spin by Li Han Hsiang, a director who’s renowned for making erotic romance movies. Throwing into the mix in “Tiger Killer”, we have Wu Song, a legendary character from the epic Chinese literature ‘The Water Margin’ or ‘Outlaws of the Marsh’.
“Tiger Killer” is very much the story of Wu Song and his brother Elder Wu. In the beginning of the movie, we learn that baby Wu Song is raised up by his brother because they parents are dead. Elder Wu sells buns on the streets, takes a lot of abuses from kids because he is a dwarf with crocked teeth. As Wu Song grows up, he always gets into trouble standing up for his brother to the point that he has to leave town and seek shelter in a nearby temple.

All Men Are Brothers
Directed by Chang Cheh
Written by Chang Cheh and Kuang Ni
Hong Kong, 1975
In 1972, The Water Margin exploded onto the Hong Kong cinema scene, courtesy of acclaimed director Chang Cheh, an eclectic cast and impressive production values that clearly upped the ante in comparison to most Shaw films which came before it in terms of scope. The movie was blessed with a sense of grandeur that took one’s breath away. Despite all the conceited efforts invested into producing a true epic, the film’s plot suffered terribly from a serious lack of momentum and stakes. 3 years later, the same director and screenwriters returned, as did much of Water’s cast, to conclude the tale of the Liang Shan outlaw gang in All Men Are Brothers, as they fight for the side of good in a tale of espionage and unabashedly gruesome combat.

The Water Margin
Directed by Chang Cheh and Wu Ma
Screenplay by Chang Cheh and Ni Kuang
Hong Kong, 1972
However many qualities may be admired about the martial arts classics from the late 60s and early 70s, their scale is not one that frequently produces feelings of awe from within the viewer. In the majority of such cases, while the films are wildly entertaining for their crazy storylines, memorable figures and detailed combat sequences, few of them have a truly epic feel about them. Chang Cheh attempted to rectify that situation in 1972 with his historical motion picture, The Water Margin.
Before the story commences, the viewer is treated to a scrolling text explaining that The Water Margin is, in truth, an important historical text in China. Written in the 14th century, it recounts the tales of various Chinese outlaws turned heroes and their battles against corruption and other evil entities in the 12th century.

Cartoon Network will begin rolling out 52 episodes of "Hero: 108" next month, the first part of a strategy designed to turn the property into a franchise that includes an Internet game and a line of toys.
Cartoon partnered with Moonscoop Entertainment to co-produce the animated show that targets young teens, and Gamania Digital Entertainment, which will launch a massively multiplayer online game in the summer. The fourth partner is Playmates Toys.
Gamania, which handles Asian rights to such popular games as "Lineage" and "MapleStory," makes its first foray into the U.S. with "Hero: 108," loosely inspired by a 14th century Chinese novel called "The Water Margin Stories."
That novel has a small band of ordinary citizens, eventually growing to 108 of them, rising against a corrupt government. The TV show and online game has stripped the politics from the story.
"We figured fighting against the government wouldn't resonate with kids," Gamania product director Kevin Crawford said.
