Television history is filled with plenty of infamous flops that barely made it to air before the networks gave them the chop: 2012 crossdressing series “Work It,” a 2007 musical drama “Viva Laughin” that the New York Times referred to as possibly “the worst show in the history of television,” and the 1990 British sitcom about Hitler “Heil Honey, I’m Home.” 25 years ago, an animated series adaptation of Kevin Smith’s 1994 cult film “Clerks” joined that dubious club — and seemed cheerfully aware of its fate the entire time.
In the pilot episode of the ABC adult animated sitcom, which remarkably was not one of the two episodes that were broadcast before the show got canceled and burned off over at Comedy Central, the lead characters Dante and Randal (voiced by Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson) watch an episode of “The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer” — “America’s #1 sitcom,” as they put it. While only six episodes were ever made and just two aired before ABC canceled the show, Kevin Smith’s Clerks: The Animated Series still has a cult audience, particularly among those who came of age watching Smith’s View Askew movies like Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma. As May 31st marks the 25th anniversary of the short-lived cartoon’s debut, Smith shared his thoughts with me on a potential Clerks cartoon reboot last year aboard the first-ever Cruise Askew Kevin Smith Fan Cruise.
Fans will be happy to know that Smith would reboot the series “in a heartbeat,” and added that it’s something he talks about all the time. However, he went on to clarify the difference between a new cartoon based on Clerks and a reboot of Clerks: The Animated Series. “There’s a very narrow path by which that version of the Clerks cartoon can come back,” he said.

There was a time in the 1990s where the NBC sitcom "Seinfeld" absolutely dominated the airwaves, and that meant there were plenty of opportunities for the show to expand. Despite seemingly being the "show about nothing," "Seinfeld" is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, which has led some people to wonder why there hasn't been a "Seinfeld" movie or any official "Seinfeld" spin-offs. It turns out one almost happened. Back in 2010 in an interview with MovieWeb while promoting his animated feature "Bee Movie," Seinfeld was asked about a rumored "Seinfeld" animated series, which sounds kind of amazing.
While Seinfeld unfortunately didn't have much to say about the potential animated series other than they "almost did it," it led us to wonder what a "Seinfeld" animated series might look like and why they didn't move forward with it. It's not likely that we'll get the animated spin-off now, decades after the fact,...

Kevin Smith has released a never-before-seen, behind-the-scenes video from his breakout film, Clerks. The 1994 comedy follows convenience store employee Dante (Brian OHalloran) and video store worker Randall (Jeff Anderson) as they deal with the minutia of day-to-day convenience store life, as well as coping with the likes of drug dealers Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith). Clerks was a hit with critics and audiences alike, launching Smith's career as a filmmaker, and creating a body of work that has lasted for three decades.
The video, posted to Smiths YouTube channel, starts with a montage of the director slating a series of shots with the clapperboard, followed by a series of outtakes, bloopers, and unused takes. The footage also includes shots of the original ending, in which the convenience store is robbed, and Dante is shot and killed. After behind-the-scenes footage is done, Smith addresses the camera, sharing how the...

There are many forgotten animated TV series with unique identities waiting to be rediscovered by audiences. Shows like Clerks: The Animated Series and Ugly Americans offer clever humor and social commentary. Xiaolin Showdown was a hidden gems that expertly blended Eastern and Western cultures with humor.
Its incredible how many excellent animated TV series have been produced that audiences have forgotten about. With such a wealth of viewing options available across traditional television and streaming, fantastic shows have continually been doomed to obscurity as the conversation around the greatest animated series has been dominated by just a few heavy hitters. While it can sometimes take some digging to find underappreciated animated series, there are so many hidden gems for audiences to enjoy.

While we wait to hear a specific release date for Kevin Smith’s latest film The 4:30 Movie, which Saban Films will be sending out into the world sometime this fall, Smith is already gearing up to go into production on his next project, a third Jay and Silent Bob movie (following Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot). While Reboot was very similar to Strike Back, Smith has said he’s working to keep this new sequel unpredictable… and, judging by the image he has posted of a prop that has been made for the film, he is succeeding. I never would have predicted that Jay and Silent Bob 3 (we’ll just call it that for now) would feature a volume of the Necromonicon called the NecroBobicon, but a Silent Bob-inspired variation on the Book of the Dead from Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead...

Earlier this month, Kevin Smith revealed that he “lost a bet” to his frequent collaborator Jason Mewes and as a result had started writing the script for a third Jay and Silent Bob movie (following Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot). On the latest episode of the Fatman Beyond podcast he hosts alongside writer Marc Bernardin, Smith talked a bit more about the movie we’ll call Jay and Silent Bob 3 for now, saying that he’s working to take the script in unpredictable directions. He also said this Jay and Silent Bob movie might be the next film he makes!
Smith told Bernardin and the fans in attendance, “I’ve been working on not just finishing up (The 4:30 Movie), but working on the next one. I’m writing – I didn’t think I would do it for a long time, but I...

Jay and Silent Bob enter the world of King of the Hill in new crossover art, which depicts Jeff Boomhauer and Bill Dauterive as the eponymous duo. The art highlights just how much the characters from both franchises love to loiter, and this could provide the basis of a real-life crossover. Similar styles of humor and Jay and Silent Bob's previous adventures in the world of animation further make a crossover possible, but one is unlikely to ever happen.

ABC never gave Clerks: The Animated Series a chance. Streaming is perfect for a Clerks reboot. Kevin Smith is getting comfortable revisiting his earlier work again.
Kevin Smith's Clerks: The Animated Series had a famously troubled run during its time on ABC. From the network not providing the same creative allowances that Smith's films got to its complete failure to air the episodes in order -- or promote the show properly -- Smith and his crew couldn't seem to catch a break. Recently, however, the popular director has proven that there's still an audience for his particular brand of storytelling with films like Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and Clerks III.
In the world of streaming, the Clerks cartoon would fit in perfectly. With far more creative freedom to match the profanity-laden film series, the show could explore the more outlandish concepts that the original six-episode run of Clerks: The Animated Series already began to.

Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in Disney’s animated feature of the same name, is set to narrate a new documentary titled “Pencils Vs Pixels.”
Co-directed by Bay Dariz (“Hypochondriac”) and Phil Earnest, “Pencils Vs Pixels” is a celebration of 2D hand-drawn animation.
The documentary, which will have its world premiere at Annecy International Animation Film Festival next week, will explore the Disney-led 2D animation boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s which was soon eclipsed by the dawn of computer animation. But, as the film shows, a resurgence of 2D animation suggests there is still hope for the medium.
The documentary features interviews with the great and good of the animation world including Pete Docter, John Musker (“The Little Mermaid”), Tony Bancroft (“Mulan”), Jorge R. Gutiérrez (“The Book of Life”), Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”), Glen Keane (“Beauty and the Beast”), Tina Price (“Hercules”), Lorna Cook (“Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...

When "Clerks: The Animated Series" debuted on ABC in the year 2000, fans of Kevin Smith's 1994 breakout film had many questions. The first one may have been, "Why did ABC cancel the show before airing all six episodes in their proper order?" Actually, the first question was probably, "Why did ABC agree to do a 'Clerks' show in the first place?" But at some point after that, the fanbase likely wondered if the cartoon was considered part of the View Askewniverse canon or not. Now, 22 years after Dante and Randal's stint on prime time television, they finally have an answer: Kind of.
After the events of the show weren't referenced in the 2006 sequel "Clerks II," Smith has finally acknowledged the ongoing adventures of New Jersey's favorite clerks in his movies thanks to "Clerks III." In the...

In Kevin Smith’s debut feature “Clerks,” way back in 1994, the indie filmmaker told a story of two workaday twentysomethings whose lives were so tragically limited that they not only revolved around retail work, but when the characters did consider life’s big questions and mysteries, their lack of personal experience also left them searching for deeper meaning in pop culture ephemera like “Star Wars.”
Smith was a young filmmaker, naive cinematically but painfully, sometimes embarrassingly earnest in his commitment to capturing the lives of foul-mouthed losers who fill their days with crass sexual humor and existential malaise. Nearly 30 years later — and 16 years after “Clerks II” found his title characters trapped in the same old rut — he’s back with “Clerks III,” a film which doesn’t plumb popular culture for the meaning of life. Instead, it searches for that depth within the original “Clerks” and Smith’s own life story.

Exclusive: CBS All Access is developing The Multivorce, an adult animated TV series created by Kirker Butler (Family Guy) and Scott Mosier (The Grinch), I have learned. It hails from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS TV Studios.
Described by sources as Marriage Story mixed with Rick and Morty, The Multivorce is a half-hour animated comedy about the Gundersons, a seemingly normal American family: mother, father, three kids dealing with the complicated realities of divorce. However, instead of the kids having to spend every other weekend at their father’s shitty bachelor apartment across town, they spend every other weekend with their warrior queen mother in her very exciting (and often very dangerous) kingdom somewhere in the Multivorce.
Butler and Mosier executive produce with Kapital’s Kaplan and Dana Honor.

Kevin Smith is teasing the return of Clerks: The Animated Series, revealing in a recent update on the project that he's planning to begin the pitching process for a reboot. In the year 2000, ABC aired just two episodes of the cult classic cartoon series before yanking it off the air, ending the show's first and only season prematurely. All six episodes of the animated series were later released on DVD with great fanfare, and the cartoon has only grown in popularity in subsequent years. Now, after twenty years, it appears we're closer than ever to seeing new episodes of Clerks: The Animated Series finally happen.
Speaking with Chris Killian of ComicBook.com in a new interview this week, Kevin Smith touched on the current state of the entertainment industry, noting how networks and streaming services are in need of new content. "Right now, animation is the business to be in," Smith says,...

Last night's Veep was a format-breaking episode presented as the long-gestating documentary Selina's daughter Catherine had been filming all season. It not only detailed the results of the electoral tie-breaker vote in the House of Representatives, but cast new light on a lot of events we had witnessed earlier in the season. I spoke with Veep showrunner David Mandel about how and why they pulled off the documentary episode, coming up just as soon as I make a call from an elementary school classroom... You set up Catherine doing the documentary early in the season. Did you know then that it would become the frame for a whole episode? David Mandel: Yeah. It's a little chicken and the egg, in terms of which part came first. I think I was partially inspired by some of the episodes like the testimony episode, and the interview episode they've done in the past.

A review of tonight's Veep coming up just as soon as I remember to check for lead... Veep only did eight episodes in its first season (a pattern HBO seems to be employing with most of its new comedies these days), but in every year since, the ninth episode has been a special one(*). Season 2 gave us "Running," where Selina got high on pain meds and said too much about her future election plans. Season 3 had "Crate," with the amazing Selina/Gary bathroom scene.(*) Last year offered up the format-busting "Testimony," which was framed as raw footage of the staff being interviewed about the data breaches. (*) Julia Louis-Dreyfus chose "Running" and "Crate" as her (winning) Emmy submission episodes in those years. (Last year was "Election Night," and — barring something extraordinary in the finale — I'm assuming she'll go with "Mother" this time, with an outside chance of "Congressional Ball." "Kissing Your...

The Weinstein Company and Miramax have agreed to a multi-year, co-production, co-distribution deal that reunites Harvey and Bob Weinstein with the onetime powerhouse company they built, sold for millions to Disney, and reluctantly lost after an ugly divorce from Disney.
Under the new deal, the two companies will collaborate to develop film, television, and stage projects based on some of the most popular properties in the Miramax library, including Good Will Hunting and Flirting With Disaster.
“This is an amazing opportunity to reunite us with the company named after our parents Miriam and Max,” Harvey and Bob Weinstein said in a statement.

While the idea of movies being spun-off and developed into TV shows seems to be a recent and growing trend, Harvey Weinstein had seen this coming years ago. You might not remember, but way back in 2011 it was revealed that he had struck a deal with the new owners of his old studio Miramax, to develop the properties there into sequels and TV shows. That meant titles like “Shakespeare in Love,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “Swingers,” “Clerks,” “Shall We Dance,” “The Amityville Horror” and "Rounders" were all on the table to be played with, so to speak. And hell, just this past spring Robert Rodriguez announced another Miramax title—"From Dusk Til Dawn"—was headed to a TV series. Now another movie from the Miramax catalog is going to the small screen. Deadline reports that James Mangold's "Cop Land" is now being developed for a TV series over at Starz.

With all of the terrible happenings in the news this week, today felt like the perfect Wednesday to veer away from contentious opinions, looting in London and big events impacting individuals who happen to work in comics. So here, without further ado are the ten tweets in the Twitter Report feed from the last 24 hours that were most likely to induce happiness.
They include details about the "Locke and Key" game from Joe Hill, Eric Powell Godzilla art and Stan Lee smiling next to a real life Stripperella. (Spoiler alert: He looks really, really happy.) They are in no particular order except for the best one being last.

What year had the best movies? It’s a simple question, right? No. You’re wrong. How could you think that it’s simple? How do we break it down? Does every movie count? What year do we start? Settle down. I’ve figured it out.

To decide what year has the best movies, we’re starting with 2010 and working backwards 32 years. Why 32? Because then we can put it in a bracket just like the Ncaa Final Four. For each year, Tsr has listed seven notable films. The key word is notable. Well, actually films would be the key word, but you get my point. Yes, you should consider any and all movies from a given year. I just gave you a reference to some of the key movies in a given year. Why seven? Well, we do Top 7 lists, so that’s why we’ve helped you out with seven suggestions from that year.

Billy Bob Thornton is officially in talks to reprise his role in Bad Santa 2 for The Weinstein Company.
In December, The Weinstein Company hit a deal with Disney-owned Miramax for sequels to a number of major catalog titles including Bridget Jones’s Diary, Copland, From Dusk Till Dawn, Swingers, Clerks, Shall We Dance, The Amityville Horror, Rounders, Shakespeare In Love and of course, Bad Santa.
Thornton made mention of deal at a panel for his SXSW closer, the Willie Nelson documentary The King of Luck but there are still plenty of details to be worked out.
(By the way, The King of Luck, a new documentary about Willie Nelson, received its world premiere last night (March 19) at the South by Southwest festival in Austin Texas — Billy Bob Thornton was a close friend of country music legend Nelson and he made it himself.)
A Weinstein Company spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap:...

Over at Vulture, art critic Jerry Saltz talks about the censorship at the National Portrait Gallery, and ultra-conservative art critic Jed Perl 's protest against the New Museum for exhibiting the Wojnarowicz video. Perl suggests that the New Museum engages in censorship by not showing every artist. Like any gallery could do that.
USA Network has cast personal favorite Enver Gjokaj alongside Nick D’Agosto in their pilot Eden, about a hotel employee that becomes a concierge at an elite hotel with the help of his con artist brother. They then go about serving their guests every need at any price.

George Clooney is set to step into Gravity, the space disaster movie that reportedly has some very racy scenes. The price tag on the movie has required a marquee star to jump start production since Robert Downey, Jr. dropped out, and Clooney has the juice.

The ruffled feathers between Miramax and The Weinstein Company seem to have been smoothed, with the news that the two entities are set to embark on a newly reinvigorated beautiful friendship. What that appears to mean immediately is sequels, and lots of them. First out of the gate, if all goes to plan, will be the further adventures of Bad Santa, Shakespeare in Love and Rounders, with Bridget Jones, From Dusk Til Dawn, Swingers, Clerks, and The Amityville Horror all also mooted for future instalments. Scary Movie, Scream and Spy Kids are all continuing to lumber on as franchises already, with Scream 4 arriving earliest on April 15, 2011.The slew of familiar names has to do with the Weinsteins only controlling "library" titles under the new arrangement. Miramax's CEO Mike Lang enthused that "We are thrilled to work with Harvey and Bob Weinstein. There is no better partner to build on these great films,...

If we revisit the score cards ... there's been one great From Dusk Till Dawn flick, one crappy one, and one okay one; and there's really never been a good Amityville movie except for Part II, which is delightfully sleazy. So can more sequels fix the problems both of these franchises have? We shall see!

ShockTillYouDrop reports that Mike Lang who is the new spear header behind Miramax (I thought was dead and gone) now has announced they are partnering up with The Weinstein Company to create sequels from some of the more popular films in the Miramax library. Hollywoodnews.com: Are you ready for the further adventures of a smitten Shakespeare? How about more card-shark games with the “Rounders” crew?
That seems to be the intention of Miramax films, which today announced a partnership with The Weinstein Company to produce sequels of popular films from the Miramax library. “Shakespeare In Love,” “Rounders” and “Bad Santa” were tapped as the first films to receive the sequel treatment, though “Copland,” “Swingers,” “Clerks” (which already has a sequel!) and “From Dusk Til Dawn” also were mentioned.
More from the release:

It was sort of heartbreaking earlier in the year when The Weinstein Company failed to purchase Miramax back. It would have been a homecoming of sorts for both companies, and it promised a return to form for Miramax after struggling through the latter part of the 2000s with fewer titles (and far less edge). The two companies have announced the next best thing – a long-term partnership. Unfortunately, that partnership is built upon producing and releasing a blight on the cinematic community. The two companies plan on releasing sequels to long-forgotten titles. Unnecessary sequels are planned for Bad Santa, Rounders, and Shakespeare in Love. There’s something harmless about seeing Billy Bob Thornton back in the Santa suit, but do they expect to nab Matt Damon and Ed Norton back? Do they plan on getting Gwyneth Paltrow back into drag? Those aren’t necessary components, but without those main actor ties, the...

A horror comedy titled Ghost Trek is set to begin shooting a pilot on December 10th. Now, don't be mislead by the title which could be thought to possibly portray a mad ghost haunting the inhabitants of the Enterprise. No, it's about the paranormal underworld and deals in the genre of reality TV. Sounds interesting. Take a look at the release below for more details.
From the Release:
Ghost Trek is a comic horror series pilot based on a paranormal reality show. Ghost Trek follows the Paranormal Underworld Detective Society (Puds) as they investigate haunts across the U.S. and abroad between tanning beds, babes, body-building, and bong hits – all the while risking life and limb confronting the undead.

Last week, Screen Rant wistfully reported the death of Miramax Films. The studio, which was founded by Harvey and Bob Weinstein in 1979, led a charmed existence for many years as it turned out countless independently produced hits (Clerks, Pulp Fiction, and Trainspotting just to name a few). In the past few years, however, the Disney-owned company had fallen on hard times and, apparently, wasn’t worth the investment anymore.
So, how much is Miramax worth? According to a recent article in The New York Times, Disney is currently shopping the company for the great value of approximately $700 million. For your purchase, you get the Miramax name, as well as control of the company’s 700-film library (which comprises over 200 Academy Award nominations). Sounds like a bargain to me! Now, where’s my wallet…
In all seriousness though, $700 million for Miramax doesn’t seem like a terrible investment. While Disney has...

It’s hard to believe it’s actually happened, but it’s sort of been a long time coming. After surviving a slacking market and budget cuts for this long, Disney has officially shut down Miramax Films. Known for it’s focus on arthouse films, Miramax was founded in 1979 by the Weinstein Brothers, Bob and Harvey, giving several filmmakers the financial nudge needed to make their marks.
The now defunct studio will always be remembered for helping bring films like Clerks, Reservoir Dogs and Boondock Saints to audiences, but not without it’s share of controversy. However, the studio also remains a legendary Oscar powerhouse, evoking memories of the old studio system in it’s run of consecutive Academy Award outings that included The Piano, The Crying Game, The English Patient, Shakespeare In Love and Chicago.

It sprang to life in 1979 as the brainchild of bullish movie producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein, and was named after their parents, but after a slow death from thousands of cuts, Miramax was officially closed today by Disney.During its early years, the Weinsteins scrappily kept the ship afloat, shoved boundaries and helped bring the world the likes of Sex, Lies And Videotape, Clerks, The Piano, Reservoir Dogs, The Crying Game and The English Patient.Rumours of the Weinsteins' bullying tactics and hard demeanor were rife, but they certainly seemed to have a keen eye for talent and an understanding of how to channel that into success. Though it was bought for $70 million by Disney in 1993, the brothers continued to run Miramax with an enviable level of creative control, and pushed their already legendary Oscar-hunting style to new heights with the expanded funding offered by the Mouse House. Among the...
