When it comes to horror movies, especially in Malayalam cinema, expectations tend to hover around eerie atmospheres, jump scares, and the occasional creepy child whispering ominous words. But Nirmal Sahadev’s Kumari isn’t your typical horror flick. It’s a spellbinding mix of horror, fantasy, folklore, and mystery — all rolled into one visually stunning package. This film doesn’t just aim to scare you; it transports you to an entirely different world where legends come alive, and every shadow has a story.
A Journey into the Unknown
Set in the fictional village of Kanhirangat in northern Kerala, Kumari draws heavily from the rich tapestry of local legends and myths. Director Nirmal Sahadev crafted this mystical world by taking inspiration from Vadakkan Aithihyamala, a collection of ancient folktales from Kerala. In an interview, Sahadev explained, “I wanted to create a story where superstition and sorcery coexist with breathtaking landscapes. Kumari is about fear,...

Nayanthara Legal Issues Netflix (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale was controversial even before its release. The issues stemmed from a legal dispute between Nayanthara and Dhanush, who reportedly demanded Inr 10 crores for three seconds of behind-the-scenes footage from the sets of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, a film produced by Dhanush. This movie holds a special place in Nayanthara’s life, as it was where she fell in love with its director, Vignesh Shivan. Despite these controversies, the documentary premiered on Netflix on November 18, 2024.
Now, there’s a new twist in the story. Makers of another film have raised a similar issue regarding the 2005 blockbuster Chandramukhi. The filmmakers are taking legal action, claiming that Nayanthara used footage from the movie without obtaining prior permission. They’re now seeking Inr 5 crores in compensation. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the creators have already sent legal notices to Nayanthara and Netflix over the matter.

Nayanthara Reflects On Her Acting Journey! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, South Indian superstar Nayanthara reflected on her early career challenges. She recalled working on veteran filmmaker Fazil’s Vismayathumbathu. For those unfamiliar, Fazil is a celebrated name in Malayalam cinema, with iconic films like Manichitrathazhu, Aniyathi Pravu, Harikrishnans, and Tamil classics like Kadhalukku Mariyadhai. He is also the father of South Indian superstar Fahadh Faasil. Adding to the film’s weight was the presence of Mohanlal as Nayanthara’s co-star.
Nayanthara candidly spoke about her struggles adapting to Malayalam cinema, particularly mastering the language. Malayalam, known for its complexity, has several regional dialects. However, the film industry and formal education predominantly use Valluvanadan Malayalam, the standardized written and spoken form. Coming from a different linguistic background, Nayanthara found it challenging to grasp the nuances of the language, which impacted her performance.

The Bhool Bhulaiya franchise has its roots in the highly acclaimed Malayalam thriller “Manichitrathazhu,” which came out in 1993. It was a masterful mix of supernatural elements and deep psychological exploration. The story was first made into a Hindi movie in 2007 with Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan.
It was an instant hit in the horror-comedy genre. What started as a complex look at mental health wrapped in a ghost story has grown into a lively series that challenges what people think it will be like.
This long-running practice is continued in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, which brings back the series’ signature mix of scary and funny moments. The movie is mostly about Rooh Baba (Kartik Aaryan), a fake ghostbuster caught up in a complicated supernatural riddle involving a haunted mansion in the made-up kingdom of Raktaghat, West Bengal.
The movie cleverly mixes horror, comedy, romance, and drama, creating a cinematic experience that...

The kindest thing that can be said about Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is that it’s unpredictable. There is little in it to prepare you for a climactic twist which is, in equal measure, audacious and ridiculous. While well-intentioned, it’s staged so clumsily that it fails to evoke the required empathy. But I will say — I did not see it coming.
Otherwise, we are back in familiar territory. The Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchise started with the classic 1993 Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu, which was remade in Hindi in 2007. Both versions delivered a skillful cocktail of laughs and scares without true paranormal activity. In each, the real culprit causing the leading lady to turn into Manjulika, the unhinged spirit of a royal dancer, was eventually identified as dissociative identity disorder.
But when director Anees Bazmee took over the reins with the 2022 reboot, the horror became real. Black magic, spirits, jump scares, ominous backgrounds and, of course,...

Is Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3’s Manjulika Real Ghost Of A Kerala Dancer?(Photo Credit – YouTube)
Was Manjulika real? This is a question that has been asked on the internet for 10 thousand times ever since Vidya Balan turned into Manjulika on-screen for Bhool Bhulaiyaa in 2007. Vidya played a girl named Avni, who lived in London and came back to India with her husband to his royal roots. But things turn drastically when she encounters the story of a royal dancer, Manjulika!
Who Was Manjulika?
Manjulika was a dancer in the court of a king who was in love with the dancer. But she was in love with her fellow dancer Shashidhar, and the king could not tolerate this rejection. He killed Shashidhar to conquer Manjulika, who in turn drank poison and took her life.

It’s common knowledge that Bollywood’s history with horror is really shaky. Despite lacking in quality filmmaking and storytelling, films like Mahal, Gumnaam, and the works done by the Ramsay brothers have gained cult status due to a severe case of nostalgia. Thanks to the Bhatts, the 2000s and 2010s were plagued with half-hearted remakes of international horror films. And it was probably the mercurial success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, the remake of Manichitrathazhu, that caused the Hindi film industry to steer away from serious horror films. Yes, we get the occasional Tumbbad, but the landscape is largely filled with Go Goa Gone, Stree, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Bhediya. And, to be honest, they are quite profitable. Aditya Sarpotdar is riding this tide with Zombivli, Munjya, and now Kakuda. So, let’s talk about it.

Directed by Roderick Cabrido, Mallari tells us the terrifying story of a priest who was accused of killing 57 people because he believed that by making the sacrifice, he could save his mother. Little did the priest know that the boon of immortality that he was seeking for his mother was not a boon after all. Some believed that there was a demon inside the priest, Juan Severino Mallari, while the comparatively rational lot had a very different point of view. The film is inspired by true events, though the writer and director have added certain fictional elements to it, mainly to increase the entertainment quotient and to make the conflicts even more invigorating. In my personal opinion, if the film had tried to understand what happened inside the mind of the priest from a scientific viewpoint, the viewing experience would have been more intriguing. Adding aspects like astral projection, time travel,...

Box Office Comparison Between Rajinikanth’s Chandramukhi Vs Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa (Photo Credit –IMDb)
Unlike now, earlier remakes used to do wonders at the Indian box office. As there wasn’t a medium like Ott, which is now responsible to give a maximum reach to all type of content, remakes of regional films raked in good money. During such a time, we saw Rajinikanth’s Chandramukhi and Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa emerging as winners despite being a remake of Manichitrathazhu. Keep reading to know more!
For those who don’t know, Chandramukhi was a remake of a Kannada film called Apthamitra (2004), which was a remake of a Malayalam film called Manichitrathazhu (1993). In MemoriamSiddique and his partner Lal were really good with situational humour and made their funniest scenes without stereotyping, at no one's expense.SiddiqueEven though Malayalam filmmaker Siddique, who passed away on August 8, is remembered along with his partner Lal for the films they wrote and directed, the two of them had begun by writing stories that others directed. They contributed to one of the most celebrated films in Malayalam, Manichitrathazhu. They were really good with situational humour and made their funniest scenes without the usual stereotyping, at anyone's expense. Later when they split ways, Siddique continued directing comedies and slipped a few into other languages too. A listicle of his films wouldn't be complete without the early films he and Lal wrote for, and without his later stints in Tamil and Hindi. NewsSiddique had directed many popular comedies in Malayalam cinema with his friend Lal, like 'Godfather', 'In Harihar Nagar', and 'Ramji Rao Speaking'.Writer and director of many comedies in Malayalam cinema, Siddique, passed away in Kochi on August 8, Tuesday. He suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday at a hospital in Kochi, where he was admitted since July 10 due to respiratory issues. The 60-year-old filmmaker hailed from Kochi. Like many artistes of his generation, Siddique had begun his career at the mimicry troupe run by Kalabhavan, a prestigious arts centre in Kerala. With Lal, his friend and colleague at Kalabhavan, he forayed into Malayalam cinema in the latter half of the 80s, writing comedies of a new flavour with an element of melancholy in them. If comedies were mostly written as a parallel track in films until then, in Siddque and Lal’s works, they merged with the main storyline,...

MollywoodIn recent times, many female actors like Navya Nair and Meera Jasmine who disappeared earlier, have begun floating back to films not just to play the big sister or mother, but to make their presence felt.It is somehow a comforting moment when Lalu Alex and Manju Warrier, playing father and daughter in Jo and The Boy, talk about her marriage like it is something she has to do having touched 30 years of age. When the film came out, Manju was 36, not far off her screen age. Still, the scene is comforting because it has for the longest time been the forte of men to keep playing the guy just ripe for marriage decade after decade, while women would have long left the field by 30 or would be cast all too unfairly as mothers and grandmothers of men twice their age. But Manju Warrier, a woman actor in her mid-30s,...

CinemaAashiq Abu’s remake of Vincent’s 1964 horror classic ‘Bhargavi Nilayam’ has brought back to spotlight an old debate, surrounding the necessity of remakes within Malayalam cinema.Still from 'Neelavelicham'Remakes are not in the least unusual, not down in Kerala, where people get a heavy dose of Priyadarshan movies. Films have been handed between languages, scripts rewritten to Hindi or Tamil from Malayalam. Priyadarshan is not the only culprit, just the more notorious one. The argument in support being that remakes take the original stories to more people, who understand a different language. But then there came remakes of Malayalam films into newer Malayalam films, works of an earlier decade retold. The case in point, the reason for this banter, is of course the remake of the iconic Bhargavi Nilayam of 1964 into Neelavelicham in 2023. Director Vincent’s Bhargavi Nilayam has been considered a classic, a horror movie that set the standards for horror movies,...

Actor Kartik Aaryan, producer Bhushan Kumar and director Anees Bazmee have reunited for “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,” the next instalment of the successful horror-comedy Bollywood franchise.
Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan starred in Priyadarshan’s “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” (2007) that means labyrinth, a remake of Fazil’s Malayalam-language film “Manichitrathazhu” (1993), starring Mohanlal and Shobana.
“Manichithrathazhu” was also remade in the Kannada-language as “Apthamitra” (2004), starring Vishnuvardhan, in the Tamil and Telugu languages as “Chandramukhi” (2005), starring Rajinikanth, and in the Bengali language as “Rajmohol” (2005), starring Prosenjit Chatterjee.
“Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2,” starring Aaryan and Tabu, was one of the few box office successes in an otherwise forgettable 2022 for Bollywood, earning $33 million. The film cemented Aaryan’s position as one of Bollywood’s A-listers.
The franchise premise turns on a malevolent female spirit haunting a heritage property and the efforts of the protagonist to exorcise it.
“Shehzada,” starring Aaryan and marking his debut as a producer, is currently on release.

The first part of “Chandramukhi”, which was produced by Sivaji Productions as its 50th film in 2005, had Rajinikanth, Prabhu, Jyothika, Nayanthara, Nasser and Vadivelu among others.

Rumours doing the rounds in the industry suggest that although “Chandramukhi 2” will be a different story and will not be a continuation of the first part, the makers will retain Vadivelu’s character only.

Now, director P. Vasu, who directed the first part, is making “Chandramukhi 2”, featuring actor Raghava Lawrence in the lead.
Rumours doing the rounds in the industry suggest that although “Chandramukhi 2” will be a different story and will not be a continuation of the first part, the makers will retain Vadivelu’s character only.

TributeThe comedy in ‘Manichithrathazhu’, the pathos in ‘Manasinakkare’, the villainy in ‘Malootty’ and the numerous characters she etched out in her long career made her a queen of emotions.CrisBasheer walks whistling by the side of a great big fence that separated jail from jail. He stops mid-tune, hearing a peculiar female voice, asking who is whistling out there. Basheer’s face brightens up at this unexpected company in a jail, a voice in the void left behind by the inmates who were no longer there. She asks his name, he hers. Narayani, says she; beautiful name, says he. Aged 22, says she; beautiful age, says he. In Mathilukal – meaning “fences” – a film made by Adoor Gopalakrishnan based on the writings of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, this is the only way we know Narayani – as a voice across a fence. Kpac Lalitha, that treasured artist of Malayalam cinema, leads a beautiful love story just by her voice,...

ReviewThe script is chock-a-block with references to old Mohanlal films. Such an indulgence can be forgiven if it was limited to a few scenes, but it becomes jarring after a point. Sowmya RajendranIt’s no secret that Mohanlal has been trying to expand his market beyond Kerala for the past few years. The star, still the darling of the masses in Kerala, appears to be miffed by the reception to his recent films, particularly Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham. In an interview with Manorama channel that went viral, Mohanlal can be seen praising the Telugu audience for how they reportedly “support” Telugu films and respect their stars. But is that the case here, he asks and laughs dismissively. Perhaps it is this that led director B Unnikrishnan to abandon the Oxford English dictionary used in his last Mohanlal film Villain and turn to Telugu instead. Written by Udaykrishna, Aaraattu employs not only...

TributeBichu, who died on Friday, gave to Malayalam cinema many of its most celebrated songs – he was known for coining catchphrases and weaving magic with lyrics.CrisBichu Thirumala / Courtesy - Sumanbichu / WikiCommons / CCBYSA4In a room in Hotel Ranjith in the Madras of late 1980s, director Kamal, working on his second film, sat with his music composer and lyricist. He told them the title of the film – Unnikale Oru Kadha Parayam (Little ones, I will tell you a tale) – and the story. He asked for a song for the movie to begin with. Ousepachan, a meticulous composer, opened his harmonium and sang a tune. Immediately from a corner of the room, Bichu Thirumala, the lyricist, sang, “Unnikale oru kadha parayam…”. Kamal and Ouseph laughed, it was a perfect fit to the tune. But that was not hard, that was the film title. Ouseph sang the tune for the second line...

ReviewThe slow pace and the adult Vedavalli’s shrill characterisation make it difficult to stay invested, even though Aravinnd Iyer does his best with what he’s given. Sowmya RajendranKarthik Saragur’s Bheemasena Nalamaharaja is about a chef and his troubled marriage with his wife who has had a traumatic childhood. The title refers to two famous male cooks from mythology; Nala, who is said to have written the first ever book on cookery, and Bheema who disguised himself as a cook when the Pandavas went into exile. In the Kannada film, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the hero Latthesh (Aravinnd Iyer) is no prince. He’s an orphan with no riches to his name. But he shares his love for cooking with the heroes from the Mahabharata. We have indulgent shots of him 'heroically' approaching a fish, in the same fashion as Bheema killing Duryodhana. He also appears to enjoy cross-dressing,...
