Exclusive: The Good Doctor creator David Shore has re-upped his overall deal with Sony Pictures Television, extending his long-running relationship with the studio behind the hit ABC medical drama, which was just renewed for a fifth season.
Under the rich new four-year pact, believed to be in the eight-figure range, Shore will continue to executive produce and run The Good Doctor, as well as develop projects for the studio under his Shore Z Production banner.
With the new deal, Shore and Sony TV’s partnership will cross over the decade mark next year, one of the longest current showrunner tenures at Sony — and any TV studio. Other creative talent who have been at Sony TV for a long time include fellow showrunners Vince Gilligan, Shawn Ryan, Josh Berman and Robia Rashid as well as producers Doug Robinson, Neil H. There’s a new boss at the Phoenix Foundation.
After the latest departure and sudden arrest of Director Patricia Thornton (Sandrine Holt), Phoenix Foundation has recruited needed a new director.
CBS announced actress Meredith Eaton will fill in those shoes as a series regular on MacGyver. She will play Matt Webber, the new director of operations and boss to Mac.
According to the press announcement, Matty Webber is a legend in the covert ops world. She was Jack’s (George Eads) superior for 18 months while on assignment in South America.
There’s also a little hint that Jack may not be happy to having her as a boss again.
“Matty Webber is a tough cookie and despite her history with Jack, she’ll have no problem finding her place in the Phoenix team. She may even teach Mac a few new tricks,” said executive producer and showrunner Peter Lenkov.

The very first pilot I watched on this job was for a CBS drama called "Ez Streets." Created by Paul Haggis — then best known for creating "Due South," but most commercially successful for having helped develop the "Walker, Texas Ranger" pilot — it was essentially an HBO drama before such a thing existed: dark, dense, ambitious, heartbreaking, and addictive. It even featured Joe Pantoliano playing a sociopath gangster years before he won an Emmy for it on "The Sopranos" (and was, to my mind, better as Jimmy Murtha than as Ralphie Ciffaretto). It was also the first time I got my heart broken in this job. Despite rave reviews from me and my more established colleagues across the country, "Ez Streets" was Doa: CBS pulled it off the air after only two episodes had aired, and though most of the remaining episodes would air the following winter, it was just running out the string.

Amazon is in negotiations with Sony Pictures TV to pick up the scrapped CBS drama pilot "Sneaky Pete" which they plan to put on their Amazon Prime Instant Video platform where they will invite viewers to weigh on its merits as a potential series.
"Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston and legendary "House" and "Family Law" producer David Shore serve as co-writers and executive producers on the project which follows a conman (Giovanni Ribisi) who assumes his former cellmate’s identity when he gets out of prison. He winds up working for the bail bond business run by his newly adopted family.
Marin Ireland, Margo Martindale, Libe Barer, Peter Gerety and Shane McRae co-star. The deal has not been finalized, but if it works it means producers of failed pilots may have an alternate option if commissioning networks decide against picking up their shows to series.

Sloan Foundation. “With Academy Award-nominated films like this year’s Gravity and Her, I Origins—as well as new scripts we are developing with Sundance Institute Labs such as The Buried Life and Prodigal Summer—demonstrates that not only are science and technology central to understanding, engaging with and dramatizing modern life, but they also make for cracking good films that draw large audiences.”
Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute, said, “Independent filmmakers offer unique perspectives on the role math, science and technology play in our world and culture. The Sundance Institute Science-in-Film Initiative, with critical support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, recognizes and encourages these projects as they make their way to audiences.”
Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize
I Origins, directed and written by Mike Cahill, has been awarded the 2014 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize and will receive a $20,000 cash award by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The Prize is selected by a jury of film and science professionals and presented to outstanding feature films focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer or mathematician as a major character.
In I Origins, a molecular biologist and his lab partner uncover startling evidence that could fundamentally change society as we know it and cause them to question their once-certain beliefs in science and spirituality. The cast includes Michael Pitt, Brit Marling, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Steven Yeun, Archie Panjabi. The jury presented the award to the film for its “intelligent and nuanced portrayal of molecular biologists as central characters, and for dramatizing the power of the scientific process to explore fundamental questions about the human condition.”
Previous Alfred P. Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Founded in 1934, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is a non-profit philanthropy that makes grants in science, technology and economic performance. This Sloan-Sundance partnership forms part of a broader national program by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to stimulate leading artists in film, television, and theater; to create more realistic and compelling stories about science and technology; and to challenge existing stereotypes about scientists, engineers, and mathematicians in the popular imagination. Over the past decade, the Foundation has partnered with some of the top film schools in the country – including AFI, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Nyu, UCLA, and USC – and established annual awards in screenwriting and film production and an annual first-feature award for alumni. The Foundation has also started an annual Sloan Feature Film Prize at the Hamptons International Film Festival and initiated new screenwriting and film production workshops at the Hamptons and Tribeca Film Festival and with Film Independent. As more finished films emerge from this developmental pipeline—four features were completed in 2013, with half a dozen more on deck—the foundation has also partnered with the Coolidge Corner Theater and the Arthouse Convergence to screen science films in up to 40 theaters nationwide. The Foundation also has an active theater program and commissions over a dozen science plays each year from the Ensemble Studio Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club and Playwright Horizons.
These activities, as well as a panel at the Festival and the Alfred P. Sloan Commissioning Grant, are part of the Sundance Institute Science-in-Film Initiative, which is made possible by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The initiative supports the development and exhibition of new independent film projects that explore science and technology themes or that depict scientists, engineers and mathematicians in engaging and innovative ways.

Perhaps mindful that Fast & Furious 6 is almost with us, and with some news about Fast 7 breaking just this morning, Alcon Entertainment have piped up with some information to remind the world that their Point Break remake is still happening. In development for years, we already knew it had a screenplay by Salt's Kurt Wimmer, but the new version of the most bodacious surfing, skydiving, foot-chasing heist movie now has a director, in the form of the awesomely-named Ericson Core.Core is a cinematographer, with credits on - here's that name again - The Fast And The Furious, Payback and Daredevil. As a director, he's helmed episodes of Family Law, and decent American football feature Invincible with Mark Wahlberg.Core's currently attached to a mafia action thriller called Fair Trade, but its status is unclear (the IMDb lists it in pre-production, but there's no cast yet). If that one isn't moving ahead,...

"Don Jon," Joseph Gordon-Levitt's debut as a writer and director, includes many shocking moments, but perhaps none more than the reemergence of Tony Danza. In a story about the way men and women objectify each other through the cultural lens of pornography and romantic comedies, it's the 62-year-old Brooklyn native -- playing Gordon-Levitt's brusque, onscreen father -- who steals his scenes with the fervor of a New Jersey dad devouring a plate of ziti and gravy.
"He said he wrote it with me in mind. That's not bad. That's pretty good," Danza, who hasn't appeared in a film since 2004's "Crash," told HuffPost Entertainment at the South By Southwest Film Festival this week. Ahead, Danza recalls why he thought Gordon-Levitt would make a good director, how being a prominent Italian shapes his career choices and why he thinks "Crash" won Best Picture.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield has been working steadily for the past several years. Aside from big screen roles in films including A Low Down Dirty Shame, Antwoine Fisher, I Am Legend, Black Dynamite and Ava Duvernay’s indie darling I Will Follow, Whitfield-Richardson has further proven her versatility as an actor on TV in shows such as Family Law, CSI Miami, Rude Awakening, among numerous guest-starring turns. On the small screen however, she is probably best known as Dr. Allison Blake in the sci-fi hit show Eureka. Dixie Carter, the tough-love mother hen on Designing Women who became the mother-in-law from hell on Desperate Housewives, died Saturday at age 70. Her publicist says she passed away in the morning and confirms to E! that it was from complications arising from endometrial cancer. "This has been a terrible blow to our family," husband and frequent costar Hal Holbrook said in a statement. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy." Aside from playing the straight-shooting Julia Sugarbaker on CBS' Designing Women opposite Delta Burke, Annie Potts and Jean Smart, Carter appeared in such series as Family Law and Diff'rent Strokes and scored an Emmy...

Dixie Carter passed away yesterday at the age of 70. Most of you likely know her from her role in the sitcom "Designing Women," which ran from 1986 to 1993. She played Julia Sugarbaker, an outspoken intellectual liberal (ironically, Dixie Carter was a Republican in real life). Carter also had a two-year stint on Amy Brenneman's "Family Law," and most recently, won an Emmy for her guest role in "Desperate Housewives."
Dixie Carter was also married to Hal Holbrook ("Deep Throat" in All the President's Men). Carter's last film appearance was in 2008's Evening Sun, in which she co-starred with her husband.
Sad news. Carter was a lovely lady.

Just last night I was watching a TV commercial featuring Dixie Carter, talking to the camera about a terrible disease whose name escapes me at the moment. And tonight comes the news that Carter has passed away at the age of 70. No further details have been released yet.
Carter is probably best known for her role as feisty, outspoken (well, all of the women were pretty feisty and outspoken on that show, weren't they?) Julia Sugarbaker on 'Designing Women,' which ran on CBS for eight years. But younger TV watchers might know her from her role on 'Desperate Housewives' as Gloria, the loopy mom of Orson (she was nominated for an Emmy for the role). But she actually starred in several other TV shows over the years, including 'Family Law,' 'Ladies Man,' 'Filthy Rich,' 'Out of the Blue,' and 'On Our Own,...

Dixie Carter's knowing smile.
Dixie Carterr, best known as the dignified, intense southern belle on television's Designing Women has passed away at age 70, according to her husband, actor Hal Holbrook.
With a career in film and television that began in the early 1960s, she became the go-to actress for a strong independent woman in the 1980s, with key roles on Diff'rent Strokes before the defining role as interior designer Julia Sugarbaker, famous for her politeness until pushed too far. Then, like many southern women I've known, she was a force of nature that was a beauty to behold.
She later played to that strong type on Family Law, and recently had a character arc on Desperate Housewives.
Our condolences to her friends and family at this time.

ZDF, ARD lead TV rivals for German prize
COLOGNE, Germany -- German public broadcasters have again put their commercial rivals to shame, dominating the nominations for this year's German Television Awards, the nation's top TV honors. Pubcaster ZDF led the pack with nominations in 24 categories, including multiple noms for historic miniseries Dresden and telefilm Die Nachrichten (The News). Sister channel ARD was close behind with 21 noms, with such series as multicultural comedy Turkish For Beginners and legal drama Family Law among those singled out. Of the commercial channels, RTL was the best represented, with 10 nominations. While drama and news programming was dominated by the pubcasters, RTL excelled with such comedy and entertainment shows as hit sitcom Everyone Loves Jimmy, about a Turkish-German family, and Let Dance! the local version of Dancing With the Stars.
