The 15 Best Disney Channel Original Movies, Ranked
Image
For kids who grew up with the Disney Channel from the late 1990s all the way through to more recent years, Disney Channel Original Movies (or DCOMs) were a fundamental part of our childhood viewing habits, even though Disney's original television series are much more famous. Depending on how old you are, there are some that stand out as highlights more than others, but each era of the channel can claim at least a few major hits.

Is our enjoyment of these films merely the result of looking at the past through rose-colored glasses? That's certainly a part of it. But amidst the cheesy, family-friendly TV movies being churned out at a dizzying pace, every once in a while there's one that's legitimately good and can stand on its own merits. Whether they had a better-than-usual script, fun music and creative production, or young actors who already had tremendous star quality,...

So, buckle up for a dive into the brooding vampire romance, to unravel more about Stewart’s casting.

How did 18-Year-Old Kristen Stewart Land Her Twilight Role?

Way before the Twilight films hit the big screen and became a pop culture phenomenon,...

Forget The Little Mermaid: Mermaids Are Terrifying, Despite What Disney Movies Say
Image
Most of the well-known mermaid films are romantic and upbeat, from the tween fantasy "Aquamarine" to Disney's revolutionary animated feature "The Little Mermaid" (which will be reimagined as a live-action movie in May), and the sex comedy "Splash" where Tom Hanks meets a beautiful mermaid who also happens to be the girl of his dreams. But mermaids can also be a nightmare.

In Greek mythology, mermaids — also known as sirens — are half-human, half-sea creatures who are mysterious and inquisitive, but also deceitful. According to folklore from around the world, female mermaids are harborers of doom. They use their bewitching singing voices to hypnotize male sailors and lure them to a watery death. In Homer's "Odyssey," Odysseus forces his men to fill their ears with wax so that they are not tempted by a mermaid's enchanting song.

Their liminal existence between the sea and shore often brings violence and conflict,...

Hogwarts Houses Of Kristen Stewart Characters
Kristen Stewart got her start in the entertainment industry at the ripe old age of nine. For the last 20 years, she’s been giving audiences a huge variety of characters to watch on screen. Stewart has come a long way since her first role: a nonspeaking one in the Disney Channel movie The Thirteenth Year.

Of course, she’s probably best known for her part as Bella in the Twilight Saga, but she’s joining a new possible franchise as one of Charlie’s Angels this year. Neither of those franchises divide their characters up into school houses based on personality, but plenty of fans could surely speculate where Stewart’s characters would end up.

'The Avengers' and 'Bond 50' are This Week's Top New DVD and Blu-ray Releases
The Avengers I have had a chance to watch The Avengers on Blu-ray and have listened to exactly 6:02 minutes of Joss Whedon's commentary so far with plans on finishing tonight and delivering an article for you tomorrow or the following day. The speed in which I finish depends on Joss, however, as he already tends to be very loquacious. Otherwise, the film looks and sounds great and I did get a chance to watch the "Agent 47" short film (or Marvel One-Shot as they refer to it) with Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford, which wasn't too bad, but it was a short film, which means there wasn't much to expect. Overall, fans of the film should definitely pick this one up, though I will admit, after seeing it three times now, you start to feel its bloat more and more with each viewing. Luckily, it's a film that tends...

A swimming movie is happening. What other Olympics-based films do you want?
Ryan Lochte
Suffering through Olympics withdrawal?

Hollywood hears you — and from the looks of things, they’re trying to cash-in on some of the once-every-four-years magic.

EW has confirmed that the upcoming film Beached, directed by Jon Turteltaub, will center on a 4-year-old child who falls overboard, is raised by whales, and goes on to become a champion swimmer. (It also sounds somewhat similar to the Disney Channel movie The Thirteenth Year, which means I’m definitely going to buy a ticket.)

The project has been in development for awhile, but thanks to the popularity of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, and Nathan Adrian,...

Stop everything! Mermaids are real?
Like Ariel, are mermaids just longing to be part of our world?

If you believe filmmaker Charlie Foley, whose “documentary” Mermaids: The Body Found aired this past weekend on Animal Planet as part of “Monster Week,” then yes.

The speculative documentary (a.k.a. not real. A mermaid is not going to attack you while you nap on the beach, okay?) explored the myth of the underwater princess — but she’s not the sweet-singing Disney version. The CGI mermaids from the film were dead ringers for the scary merpeople from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, or rejects from the set of Avatar.

Disney Channel Original Movies: A look back at the Golden Era
Raven-Symoné and Kirsten Storms in Zenon, la fille du XXIᵉ siècle (1999)
I happened to catch the High School Musical spin-off Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure while watching a friend’s kid sister last weekend, and I have to say, once and for all, that I’m totally and completely over Disney Channel Original Movies… and it’s about time. Even toward the end of what I consider the Golden Era of Disney Originals — starting in 1999 with Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century and coming to a screeching halt in 2003 with The Even Stevens Movie — I was probably a little too old to be watching them. I remember joking about the latest cheesy Domp (Disney Original Motion Picture…...

Celebrity Biography: Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart may be an international superstar thanks to her role as Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga, but she actually had critics and moviegoers singing her praises well before Twilight (2008) exploded into theaters. Born to John and Jules-Mann Stewart on April 9, 1990, Stewart kicked off her acting career at just eight years old, in a school play, and just a couple of years later, after brief appearances in The Thirteenth Year (1999), The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000), and The Safety of Objects (2001), she wowed audiences with a remarkable performance as Jodie Foster's diabetic daughter in the thriller Panic Room (2002). Stewart never looked back from there, mixing major studios films with indie projects, and amassing such credits as Cold Creek Manor (2003), Speak (2004), Catch that Kid (2004), Undertow (2004), Fierce People (2005), Zathura (2005), In the Land of Women (2007), The Messengers (2007), The Cake Eaters (2007), Into the Wild (2007), What Just Happened (2008), The Yellow Handkerchief (2008), and Jumper...
