The circumstances of the long-distance relationship between Erin (Katie Aselton) and Charlie (Daveed Diggs) are a little atypical in “Magic Hour,” but director-star Aselton and co-writer Mark Duplass have long been able to cook up tantalizing, high-concept hooks for dramas about mental strain. It seems as if a weekend in Joshua Tree might offer a rare, in-person respite for the couple. But the rendezvous shows they couldn’t be further apart, setting up an even bigger drama at the heart of Aselton’s occasionally frustrating yet considerably daring drama.
Neither Erin or Charlie will mention exactly what’s driven a stake between them after Erin’s longtime friend (Brad Garrett) hands her the keys to his desert abode, and their vague use of “it” can irritate in the time it takes to get to the film’s big reveal. However, “it” certainly has to be big when the two would...

Any list of the most breakthrough independent films of the 21st century is bound to include some, if not all, of the following titles: “Boyhood,” “The Babadook,” “Frances Ha,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” and “Blue Is the Warmest Color.” The connection between these releases is IFC Films, the indie distributor now celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2020. IFC Films has become one of the definitive indie film studios over its first two decades by supporting visions from the world’s most beloved auteurs, including Richard Linklater, Jennifer Kent, Noah Baumbach, Olivier Assayas, Steve McQueen, the Safdie brothers, Lars von Trier, Ken Loach, the Dardenne brothers, Andrea Arnold, and Alfonso Cuarón.
IFC Films started its historic run with the December 2000 release of “Spring Forward,” the Tom Gilroy drama starring Ned Beatty and Liev Schreiber as two parks department workers in New England who forge a friendship over a year working together.

Home Alone has been a staple of the Christmas schedule for well over two decades (feel old yet?) and despite numerous sequels and imitators, none have come close to recapturing that winning mix of sweetness and nasty violence. What more could you want during the festive period?
Home Alone 2 isn’t quite as beloved and is basically a beat for beat rehash of the original, just with nastier violence, but still, odds are if it plays on TV people will still get sucked into it. There are rumours other sequels were made, but the world made a united pact to forget about them.
The cult of the two movies is still going strong, with Macaulay Culkin and Daniel Stern recently reprising their roles for online videos that quickly went viral. It seems like there’s not much more to be said about the films, but there...

Two Bond villains and Eva Green walk into a western, and they emerge with a rugged — if far from revolutionary — old-school horse-opera throwback. Having long since ditched the Dogme 95 precepts that guided his breakout 2000 feature, The King Is Alive, Danish director Kristian Levring employs a bounty of CG-enhanced Sergio Leone–isms for The Salvation, the story of a Danish soldier-turned-settler named Jon (Casino Royale's Mads Mikkelsen) who's reunited with his wife and child in 1871 America, only to have them raped and murdered. Jon exacts bloody revenge for this crime, which in turn makes him the target of a bandit leader (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in league with a mayor (Tomorrow Never Dies' Jonathan Pryce) and in love with ...

Coverage of International Sales Agents (ISAs) has resumed for the Toronto International Film Festival. This segment covers inspirational companies that have officially selected films in the festival. SydneysBuzz features ISAs, as they play an instrumental and necessary role in helping filmmakers to share their visions and voices with the world.
Denmark based TrustNordisk has sold the rights of Kristian Levring’s western "The Salvation" to Universal Pictures International Entertainment (Upie) in a number of international territories, including Latin America, Eastern Europe and South Africa. The deal was negotiated by Susan Wendt, Head of Sales, on behalf of TrustNordisk. “There is no doubt that "The Salvation" has found a perfect home at Upie who we are sure will give the film the best possible launch. This also strongly indicates that the international market place is more than ready for a western of Scandinavian origin”, says Susan Wendt, Head of Sales at TrustNordisk. Officially selected for Out of Competition, midnight screening at the Cannes International Film Festival, "The Salvation" is a large scale western rooted in Scandinavia – a tale of revenge, blood feud, lost love and greed. "The Salvation" is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Kristian Levring (The King Is Alive, 2000), written by Academy Award-winner Anders Thomas Jensen (In A Better World, 2010 and Love Is All You Need, 2012) together with Kristian Levring. Featuring an all-star cast consisting of Eva Green, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Mikael Persbrandt, Eric Cantona and Jonathan Pryce among others and led by Mads Mikkelsen "The Salvation" tells the story of a Danish settler in 19th century North America, who sets out to avenge his family. "The Salvation" is produced by Sisse Graum Jørgensen for Zentropa Entertainments33 ApS in co-production with Spier Films from South Africa and Forward Films from UK with the support of The Danish Film Institute, Danish Broadcasting Corporation (Dr) and Nordisk Film & TV Fond. The King Is Alive director Kristian Levring is hard at work making his next film, Western themed drama The Salvation. He now has a solid cast lined up, including Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Michael Raymond-James. They’re joining a cast that already includes recent Empire Pod-guest Jonathan Pryce, Mikael Persbrandt, Douglas Henshall and (ooh, ahh) Eric Cantona.Adapted from Nordic sagas by Levring and Anders Thomas Jensen, The Salvation follows John (Mikkelsen), a settler whose family is murdered. Swearing revenge, he hunts down and kills the man responsible, but that act triggers a chain of violence as local gang leader Delarue brings the full might of his criminal associates down on John and his town.Levring is shooting now in Johannesburg, but there’s no set release date for the movie yet. Green will next be seen in 300: Rise Of An Empire and Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

Danish director Kristian Levring is probably best known for his feature The King Is Alive, which was the fourth film put out under the Dogme 95 rules. His new movie Fear Me Not resides as the other end of that spectrum as a dark thriller that rests on the edge of becoming sinister at any moment. It's a great commentary on modern day pharmaceuticals, and what they might or might not be doing to us. Read on for our in-depth interview with Levring, in which he talks about pharmaceuticals, his favorite filmmakers, and the Dogme legacy. <span id="m ...
