The 2017 time warp continues: While it may feel like this season of Saturday Night Live started a long time ago, this is only the seventh episode. As host, Saoirse Ronan acquitted herself well, although this is a show in which she served as ensemble rather than actual lead in most sketches. Nothing suggested the show was hiding her in any way, but the nature of the material meant there were few chances for her to stand alone in the spotlight.

For much of the 2017 Gotham Independent Spirit Awards ceremony, it seemed like nothing could topple “Get Out.” Then came “Call Me By Your Name,” which landed Best Feature after “Get Out” triumphed in three major categories, proving that not only are both movies serious contenders for the best movies of the year, but we also have an unpredictable awards race.
That said: Anyone who uses the Gothams as a crystal ball for predicting the Oscar race is looking in the wrong place. Hosted by Ifp, the swanky New York shindig celebrates movies and television made with an “economy of means,” with a series of small committees to select the nominees and winners for each category. That’s a world away from the Oscar voting process, which involves thousands of members, multiple branches, and no limits on budgets.

Full disclosure: There won't be any Kkw Beauty, Kylie Cosmetics or product #ads here. Don't get us wrong: We eat up every Kardashian-Jenner launch and endorsement like SugarBearHair Vitamins. However, for this holiday gift guide, we've combed through the Keeping Up With the Kardashian stars' social media posts from the last year to find items they weren't paid to promote. Lucky for us, Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian have shared products they simply love or were just excited to try. We even found gift inspiration from family matriarch Kris Jenner's IGs. Not surprisingly, there are some luxury products here—nothing says love (and deep pockets) than Kim K.'s...

Full disclosure: I haven't checked in with Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his colleagues since early in the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It's no fault of the show itself, which is pretty entertaining. There's just too much damn television these days that is far better than "pretty entertaining." Having now seen the first trailer for the series' upcoming fifth season, however, I might have to play catch-up in the coming weeks. The short trailer, which you can take a look at below, reveals a jump from earthly bonds and …...

There's nothing like The Room, right? A film so bad it's so good. The Disaster Artist is an attempt to tell the story about the making of Tommy Wiseau's The Room, and the friendship behind it, and their dream to become famous, and make a movie that everyone would love. Directed by and starring James Franco, this film is much more of an homage to the cult classic that is The Room, as well as a nod to the passion it takes to make something so terrible. To dream so big and yet fail so spectacularly, but still embrace that failure, and revel in the joy it (somehow) brings to some people. It's not an outright comedy, more of a drama with funny scenes, that also perfectly recreates The Room and pays tribute to the one-and-only Tommy Wiseau. Full disclosure: I have never actually seen The Room, so...

Super Mario Odyssey is finally out! Read our official review to understand why every Mario fan should buy this game, immediately!
A Simple Proposal You Can Say Yes To
Nintendo’s latest Mario adventure finds our favorite Italian plumber in a giant game of “Catch Me If You Can”, as his mortal enemy, Bowser, has kidnapped Princess Peach, Mario’s one true love, in Super Mario Odyssey. It may sound as if you’ve heard this one before, and frankly you have, but the difference with this game is that there is an actual purpose to Bowser kidnapping Peach. He plans to marry her, despite her protests. It’s not directly explained, but it seems as if he’s doing it to become King of the Mushroom Kingdom. Nevertheless, it’s up to Mario to once again be the hero and save his damsel-in-distress.
The story starts out at a heart-racing pace,...

Dr. Gauchet (Jerome Flynn) in Loving Vincent. Painting by Kat Knutsen. Copyright © Loving Vincent
The strikingly beautiful animated film Loving Vincent is described as “the world’s first fully oil painted feature film.” That description means a group of artists hand-painted the images that fill this stunningly beautiful film. This intriguing, ambitious film goes a step further and puts animated actors into Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings, which are used as the setting to explore the artist’s life and work through a mystery tale investigating his death. The result is not only gorgeous but an appealing fact-and-fiction tale through which the film recounts the famous artist’s life and art.
Van Gogh paintings are brought to life so that the actors, rotoscoped and then painted, move around in them, an amazing and pleasing effect. Loving Vincent employed a team of 125 artists over six years to hand-paint in oil recreations...

This beautiful pair of illustrated posters for two late 50s Maigret adaptations by Jean Delannoy is the work of Nathan Gelgud, an artist who by now should be well known to cinephiles in New York and Los Angeles. Nathan is the creator of the auteur tote bag, an essential cinephilic fashion accessory for the 2010s, more on which later. Full disclosure: I was involved in the art direction on these posters at Kino Lorber, whose repertory division is re-releasing Maigret Sets a Trap (originally released in the Us as Inspector Maigret and later re-released as Woman Bait) at Metrograph today and will be releasing both films on Blu-ray in December. I’d been aware of Nathan’s work for a while, but it was his comic-book style resumé poster for Metrograph’s Alain Tanner retrospective this summer that convinced me he’d be perfect for Maigret. And, as luck would have it,...

This Fast feud is getting Furious, and honestly, has us reaching for the popcorn.
Just days after Tyrese Gibson called out Dwayne Johnson on Instagram for allegedly causing Fast 9's release date to be delayed, Johnson unveiled a preview clip of his Fast & Furious spinoff movie with Jason Statham -- revealing that it will hit theaters on July 26, 2019 -- though parts of the caption seem to suggest that the 45-year-old actor may be just as interested in clapping back against Gibson, as well as co-star Vin Diesel, as he is with promoting his own film.
"Pumped to expand and build out the Fast & Furious universe in a cool, exciting way," Johnson captioned the post, adding, "Thank you Universal Studios for being tremendous partners who see the big picture and for coming to us years ago with this spinoff idea."

There’s a poorly kept secret amongst cancer fighters and survivors: we always manage to find each other. It’s kind of like how you see your ex’s car everywhere after a breakup -- even if you want to run as far away as possible, the C-word constantly pops up, like a neon sign with Energizer Bunny-like regenerative powers.
Though Charles Esten himself is not a cancer survivor, he is the caregiver of one. When the Nashville star’s daughter, Addie, was two-and-a-half years old, she was diagnosed with leukemia. Now almost 18, Addie is thriving, dominating the soccer field on a national-level team and getting ready to play the sport at a D-1 college. But the fact that Esten's baby girl had to go through such a harrowing experience so early in her life has remained with him.

For Hollywood’s biggest stars, there might be one thing that’s more painful than standing in heels for hours at an event — and that’s wearing a supertight red carpet ponytail. Full disclosure, I will not spoil ‘mother!‘ (but you can read our review here), I think it’s incredibly vital to the film and the filmmakers that most of the film stay under wraps. For better or worse, I went into the film as blind as I could and left…blind with fury.
Now, I’ll admit wholeheartedly that surrealist films and those that get lost in their own message and metaphors infuriate me. Not because I don’t get it, but because of the people that applaud and celebrate these films like they are the second coming of some long-lost messiah. These are films, yes, and they deserve to be celebrated, but don’t look toward your nose at those that enjoy films that involve The Avengers assembling, or men dressed as bats beating up clowns. All film deserves to be celebrated, so what makes ‘mother!’ worthy of discussion and this essay?...

On this episode of Suits, "Full Disclosure," Mike searches for a way to take down Reform Corp. with some help from Anita Gibbs, Alex and Harvey's complicated history is revealed and Mike finally learns Harvey's motive for protecting Alex.
Apparently, in order to understand what shady dealings Alex is mixed up in, we have to endure some flashbacks. I'm no fan of flashbacks, and one TV writer explained aptly why -- it's lazy storytelling. And don't get me started on the bad wigs and makeup. Anyway, Alex's story goes back seven years and he and Harvey are playing poker. Harvey confesses to Alex that he failed to make partner after being screwed over by Louis. Alex tells Harvey that he could bring him on at Bratton as a partner. Harvey wants to know what's in it for Alex. Alex heard that Tommy Bratton is looking to bring in a big earner from another firm.

Keil Gilchrist headlines "Atypical" as Sam, a teenager on the spectrum.
Full disclosure: I am not objective.
Generally, a reviewer would attempt an unbiased look at how a piece of entertainment could appeal to the masses. We all know this is not the case in reality. I want you all to know that I did not review Netflix’s new series Atypical without my own preconceived notions.
My son has autism. I have been wavering on whether I wanted to give Atypical a chance. It could go the This is Us route and over-sentimentalize everything, or it could go down the I Am Sam road and make everything offensively “special”. Here’s how it goes down: three survivalists are trapped at different points inside underground cave systems for up to six days. Their goal is to find each other and then find their way out of the cave.

Full disclosure: Jurassic Park is my favorite movie. Always has been, always will be. I was born in 1989, and though I grew up on a steady cinematic diet of the usual staples like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, I was, essentially, late to the party. I wasn’t there in 1977 when the world was first taken back a long time ago to a galaxy far, far away. I wasn’t there in 1981 when audiences first met Indy, or in 1982 when a young boy became best friends with a stranded extraterrestrial, or in 1985 when Marty McFly traveled back to 1955. These were the types of stories I grew up on, love, and cherish, of course, but it wasn’t until 1993 that I had the chance to be present as a film became something else, transcending into a cultural event of its own.

You’re certainly not going to break down in tears once the credits roll. Simply put, it probably won’t restore your faith in studio animation. But it may make you laugh.
Unlike so many of its peers, Despicable Me 3 is filled with clever humor that goes — if only a smidgen — deeper than your typical face-value gags and physical body humor that’s so present in a majority of today’s animated films. So there’s this ancient Greek named Theseus who builds a ship. Over time the ship needs repairs and pieces of it have to be replaced and finally everything has been replaced. Not a single splinter of the original craft remains. Which brings us to what is known in some circles as Theseus’s Paradox. We ask: Is the ship our man Theseus ends with the same one that he built years earlier? Please remember that nothing of the original remains.
Want to push this a bit further before we introduce comics characters into the discourse? Okay, I’m a ratty rival of Theseus and I take every piece of what Theseus has built and use it to build my own ship. I add nothing, I simply reuse Theseus’s materials. Whether it's the full-on heart eyes he's always giving to wife Ayesha, how sweet he always is with his unbelievably adorable daughters, or his killer abs on display, Steph has a lot of good things going on. To top off how seemingly perfect his personal life is, he's also riding high in his professional life as well. He and the rest of the Golden State Warriors just won the NBA Championship over the Cavs and he is understandably celebrating in style - and also shirtless, which we are fully Ok with. People of the world, it's time to get on board with the sports, because athletes are seriously ripped, and we can't get enough. They work hard day in and day out to perfect their game and their bodies and are in ridiculous shape, all so we can stare and drool. Ok, so maybe it's all for the love of the sport, but athletes are also nice to look at. Don't believe me? These ridiculously attractive photos of Steph should absolutely change your mind and have you googling key basketball phrases so you can keep up when basketball season rolls around again later this year. Here in the week of E3, the videogame industry’s biggest conference, it’s time to ask if e-sports has finally broken through after years of underground but massive growth. It’s also time to wonder if Disney bet on the wrong horse when it bought Maker Studios instead of Twitch three years ago.
Yes, I know. If you’re over the age of 35, e-sports can seem mystifying. You likely can’t imagine anyone sitting in front of a TV (or computer) watching someone else sitting in front of a computer playing a video game. But as I’ve always said, why is it different than sitting in front of a TV watching someone play games such as football, basketball or baseball?(Full disclosure: I played all three sports growing up and am a gamer, too.) Or for that matter, why are e-sports different than participating in a dance...

The quality of NBC’s This Is Us, which was far and away the best network drama of the past TV season, is at risk of being overshadowed by so, so much blathering about how, why and when Jack Pearson died. As such, TVLine has decided to cease playing any part in perpetuating that deafening deluge of speculation.

“What a s–t show!” Vanessa Williams’ character declares as the series premiere of VH1’s Daytime Divas reaches its dramatic conclusion. “And the most fun of I’ve had in years.”
PhotosMay Sweeps In Memoriam: 40+ Deaths From Supernatural, Scandal, Arrow and More — Which Loss Hit You Hardest?
Williams’ character may be referring to The Lunch Hour — a fictional daytime talk show not unlike, say, The View — but her words are just as relevant to Daytime Divas, itself. Monday’s series premiere, an hourlong parade of brawls, backstabs and bitchy one-liners, is a solid sampling of what the grade-a guilty pleasure has to offer.

Netflix and Marvel's Iron Fist was a strange, frustrating show. The corporate business storyline was confusing and clunky (at best), while the season finale ended with a thud and lacked closure. However, the biggest and most obvious complaint I've heard was that Danny Rand, played by British actor Finn Jones, simply wasn't a very likeable character. He couldn't manage his anger, he was petulant, and his personality seemed to regress throughout the season.
And yet, the show definitely had its moments.
Buried within Iron Fist's considerable flaws was an interesting premise with lots of cool ideas to explore. But I still can't get my head around the Rand/Iron Fist character. Was the issue in the script, the direction, or the acting? Granted, each of the Netflix/Marvel shows have their share of warts (primarily the second halves of each season), but Iron Fist's problems were evident right...

Full disclosure: I’ve enjoyed my time with Renowned Explorers much more than I thought that I would. This charming, beautiful and deceptively detailed adventure game is everything that makes independently developed games such a rich and diverse source of engaging content. I say that because being a little bit frank, there’s a lot of goodness hidden inside Renowned Explorers, but like the buried treasure so often found in the game, you’ll have to dig for it a bit.
The concept of Renowned Explorers should be obvious enough from the title, but with that said, it’s amazing how few games actually focus on The Golden Age of Exploration in the way that this one does. Essentially, players form a crew of three characters that must then undertake a series of five expeditions, each of which takes place in some historically recognizable place such as a pyramid,...

When I get actor and director Amber Tamblyn on the phone on Monday morning, she has her hands full. Metaphorically, because the first movie she directed, Paint It Black, is hitting theaters in just a few short days; literally, because she's stocking her fridge with breast milk for her infant daughter, Marlow. In the last 13 months, Tamblyn has somehow managed to finish her first feature film, release her third book of poetry, Dark Sparkler, welcome her first child, and take my call. I am impressed. Paint It Black revolves around the intimate, tense relationship that forms between Josie (Alia Shawkat) and her boyfriend's mother, Meredith (Janet McTeer), in the wake of his suicide. (Full disclosure: while I'd never met Tamblyn before, I do have a personal connection to this project. Janet Fitch, who wrote the novel Paint It Black, taught in my Mfa program and remains a mentor to me.

I'm sure the theme song for Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie won't hit the radio and become a sensation like Pharrell Williams "Happy", but I definitely get the same vibe from this song! Listen to the song below and watch the official lyric video, then replay and listen again below!

“The Daily Show” may have entered a new era with host Trevor Noah, but it’s not like the old cast went into retirement. Husband-and-wife contributors Jason Jones and Samantha Bee are among the most productive former members of the Jon Stewart “Daily Show” years — which is particularly notable once you discover they came close to taking over the program themselves.
Instead, the pair found a welcome home at TBS, where Bee hosts the weekly satiric news program “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” (which will air the special “Not the White House Correspondents Dinner” this weekend) and Jones serves as an executive producer. Meanwhile, the couple is also behind the TBS comedy “The Detour,” a subversive family comedy that they co-wrote and in which Jones stars.
Now wrapping its second season, “The Detour” began as an over-the-top road trip comedy with Jones as a corporate whistleblower moving his family across the country.

Newsweek is reporting that Mauro Ranallo, announcer for WWE Smackdown Live as well as boxing and Mma organizations, has left the company. Last seen on WWE television on March 7th, speculation has run high as to the reason why Mauro had been off the air. Some speculated it was due to his bi-polar disorder, which Mauro has been open about. Dave Meltzer from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, one of the preeminent wrestling news organizations in the country, has been adamant since the story broke that the reason for Mauro leaving was due to bullying from Jbl. Citing the March 13 episode of Bring It To The Table, starring Peter Rosenberg, he cites that Jbl's verbal jabs at Mauro for winning the Best Announcer Award from the Wrestling Observer were cause for Mauro to leave. Mauro had this to say to Newsweek about his departure.

We chat with Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson about love and rehearsals and life and more rehearsals at Tribeca.Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead in ‘The Endless’. Oh, brother, there art thou!
The Shallow Pocket Project is going to Tribeca (in spirit)! We’ll be chatting with several independent filmmakers making the trek to New York for this year’s film festival. Stay tuned! Check out our last chat with Ted Geoghegan (Director of ‘We Are Still Here’). Special thanks, as always, to In The Mouth of Dorkness, Lisa Gullickson, and Darren Smith.

“You don’t have to have a true story to make a true story movie.”
Noah Hawley’s acclaimed midwestern crime anthology Fargo returns to FX this week, along with my enthusiasm for saying oh yah and you betcha to anyone with the gall to speak to me when I would rather be watching Fargo. In my defence there are not one, but two, gloriously bad Ewan McGregor wigs. Truly, Hawley is doing the Lord’s work. Season three is set in the not too distant past of 2010, and follows the tried-and-true template of a ridiculously stacked ensemble of endearing (and woefully misguided) ne’er do wells gradually bungling their way into a shit show of their own design. As with each of the previous installments, least of all the Coen Brothers’ original 1996 film, the opening of this week’s episode features the following superimposed text:

There is a quote, often attributed to François Truffaut, that there can be no such thing as an anti-war film. Here’s his exact words, from this 1973 interview with Gene Siskel in the Chicago Tribune: “I find that violence is very ambiguous in movies. For example, some films claim to be antiwar, but I don’t think I’ve really seen an antiwar film. Every film about war ends up being pro-war.” It’s a line of thinking that could apply to rape and suicide, images of which proliferate onscreen so often it can be difficult to keep track.

Kim Kardashian may be the fairest one of all—but we can come pretty damn close. This week, E! News exclusively premiered a video of the mogul modeling Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star 006, a 7-piece eye kit and the first launch from legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath's "In the Mirror" series. In a black, puffer jacket and gold jewelry, Kim debuted an intense smoky eye, channeling a modern-day Evil Queen. Even without Kim's endorsement, the $130 eye kit will surely sell out, as did McGrath's lip kits—seen on Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Naomi Campbell. But is Dark Star 006 actually worth it? And even more importantly, do we need to be pro makeup artists to use it? Full disclosure: I...

I've had to write Szechuan more times this week than I can count. It's all thanks to Rick And Morty, who with their Season 3 sneak preview mentioned the sauce that was once part of the McDonald's lineup during a promotion for Mulan. While the fast food giant has indicated they're interested in bringing the sauce back, it's not quick enough for the world of the internet and we need stuff now! Luckily, guys like Andrew Rea were quick to make a video so that you can make the sauce at home.
Full disclosure, he doesn't know what the sauce tastes like...but neither do I so how do we know what we're missing? ...

It's safe to say that Girls Season 6 Episode 8 is one of my favorites out of the series' entire six-year run.
Unlike many other installments, the three separate plots of "What Will We Do This Time About Adam?" wove together perfectly, and I was equally invested in each of them. The lack of Marnie certainly didn't hurt things either.
The biggest development, as indicated by the title, was Adam's spur of the moment decision to break up with Jessa and reunite with Hannah. Say what now?
It was a drastic decision and seemingly out of left field – Adam was completely, 100% into Jessa for all of Girls Season 5 and had, by all appearances, forgotten all about Hannah. But looking at the show's most recent installments, it's not actually as random as it appears.
The biggest indicators, of course, would be all of the many times that Adam has brought up his love of babies.

The Battle Rounds on The Voice are reliably the most difficult to rank. I've done this ranking gig about five times now, and I always dread it. Performing their best is an uphill battle for the newbie artists, for two reasons. First, they have to compete directly with another artist. Can you image what's going through their minds as they face off against their competitor? I'll bet it's something like this: "You are one of the only people in the universe who understands this experience I'm enduring. You have a gut-wrenching story and a kick-ass voice that intimidates the hell out of me. I don't want to crush your dreams, but I will if it means I get another shot at mine." Call it a baptism of fire. Call it hazing. I call it intense.
Second, at this point, the artists haven't gotten any true one-on-one time with their coach and advisor.

This episode feels a lot smaller than the past few. Nobody’s dying or finding out they’re pregnant or making a movie. And that’s fine. A TV show season should give you a few breathers here and there. I didn’t expect that breather to come in the form of an episode almost entirely about Elijah trying out for a White Men Can’t Jump musical, but okay, sure.
