25 Years Later, Mel Gibson's $215 Million Historical Epic Is an American Streaming Hit
Image
Recently, Hollywood veteran Mel Gibson was back in the directing chair for the action thriller Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg. Never far from our screens, Gibson's latest box office release fell short of success, and earned a poor critics' rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, albeit with a much stronger 62% from audiences. 25 years prior, Gibson was starring in another action flick that earned 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, this time set during the American Revolutionary War.

Directed by Independence Day filmmaker Roland Emmerich, The Patriot is considered one of Gibson's better entries in a filmography packed with ups and downs. So popular is the historical epic, it has returned to the streaming charts once again this week. As of July 27, 2025,The Patriot is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Paramount+ in the U.S., per FlixPatrol. Entering the list at #10, nine other titles outperformed it at the time of writing,...

Mel Gibson’s Controversial 54% Rotten Tomatoes Rom-Com Just Arrived on a New Free Streamer
Image
Mel Gibson might be known for charging into battle in Braveheart or directing The Passion of the Christ, but there was a moment in 2000 when he stepped squarely into the world of romantic comedies — and now, that film is making a streaming comeback. What Women Want, the high-concept rom-com from writer-director Nancy Meyers, has just landed on Pluto TV, for free.

The movie stars Gibson as Nick Marshall, a chauvinistic advertising executive who, after a freak accident involving a bathtub and a hair dryer, gains the inexplicable ability to hear women’s thoughts. Naturally, chaos — and introspection — ensue. Helen Hunt co-stars as Darcy, Nick’s new boss and the first real challenge to both his career and worldview. Rounding out the cast are Marisa Tomei, Judy Greer, and Sarah Paulson. According to the official logline:

"Advertising executive Nick Marshall is as cocky as they come, but what happens to a...

Jude Law's $206M Romcom Classic Is Getting an Apple TV+ Series 19 Years Later
Image
Holiday traditions are important, and many films and shows are a part of them. For many, there's no Christmas without Home Alone, but also without Love Actually, Die Hard, and The Holiday.

The latter premiered in 2006, and it came from rom-com queen Nancy Meyers, starring a star-studded cast with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black in the leading roles. The rom-com has since become a classic many rewatch at Christmas, especially since it has aged very well. Other studios believe so too because Deadline reports Apple TV+ is rebooting The Holiday into a TV series.

The upcoming reboot will not feature the same characters, but it will keep the premise of the film. The Holiday followed two women, one from a remote town in the UK, and another living the life in Los Angeles, California. However, their personal lives were going terribly, and they decided to switch houses for a while,...

10 Years Later, Robert De Niro's Comedy That Should've Won Him an Oscar (According to Quentin Tarantino) Is a Hit on Streaming
Image
Robert De Niro is one of the best actors of all time, who has received eight Oscar nominations, winning two of them. However, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino thought he gave an Oscar-worthy performance in a comedy he wasn't nominated for: 2015's The Intern.

De Niro might have starred in many gangster films, but he has also starred in other genres like comedies. For The Intern, he teamed up with legendary director Nancy Meyers and Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway. The Intern recently premiered on Netflix, and it quickly became a streaming hit, Tudum reports.

The Intern hit Netflix on June 22, and it didn't waste time to attract viewers. For the week between June 23 and June 29, The Intern landed in the global Top 10 in fourth place. It received 5.6 million views and 11.3 million hours viewed.

The numbers are even more impressive when accounting for the fact that it was only available in one territory: the U.

Image
It’s been a rough start to the year for Robert De Niro after the release of The Alto Knights, but another of his films that was mostly forgotten to time has resurfaced on streaming charts 10 years later. De Niro stars alongside Anne Hathaway and Rene Russo in The Intern, the 2015 workplace comedy following seventy-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (De Niro) who becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site. The Intern was released on Netflix not long ago, and the film jumped to the top of streaming charts in America, sitting at #1 at the time of writing. It grossed over five times its $35 million budget upon release, earning $194 million, and it also netted scores of 60% from critics and 73% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nancy Meyers did not need any help to write and direct The Intern, which is still the most recent film she’s released in her career.

Quentin Tarantino Says Robert De Niro Gave Oscar-Worthy Performance in This 10-Year-Old Comedy Coming to Netflix
Image
One of Robert De Niro's forgotten comedies has a chance at rediscovery when it premieres on Netflix. De Niro teamed up with legendary director Nancy Meyers and co-star Anne Hathaway for 2015's The Intern.

The Intern joins a slate of classic movies coming to Netflix this month when it premieres on the streaming service on Sunday, June 22. While The Intern divided critics with a 60% Fresh Score on Rotten Tomatoes, it had a much more positive audience score with 73%.

The Intern Debuts on Netflix Later in June

"One of my favorite movies [of 2015] was Nancy Meyers' The Intern," famed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino previously said of the movie. "They're not considering that for the Oscars even though I think Robert De Niro gave one of the best performances [of 2015] in that movie. I thought the script was actually one of her best. Right up there with It's Complicated. They're not asking her to be part of the discussion.

What Happened To The Cast Of Twister?
Image
Like the 1970s, the '90s were a great decade for disaster films. In addition to films like "Deep Impact," "Armageddon," "Independence Day," "Dante's Peak," and "Volcano," there was, of course, "Twister." The Jan de Bont film followed a storm-chasing couple on the verge of divorce, chasing one of the worst outbreaks of tornados in the history of Oklahoma. Though the film is now almost three decades old, it holds up!

There are lots of reasons why the movie works so well. One major factor was de Bont's insistence on practical effects. "We dropped those combines hanging from helicopters onto the road as the car was driving, which, of course, makes for the best reaction you can get from the actors, because it's goddamned real," he told Vulture. "They really fall from the sky, and it is not like a little fall."

Another major aspect of the film's success was its cast.

Netflix snuck in 12 more fantastic movies to begin March

The fine folks of Netflix can be sneaky little devils sometimes. Case in point: even though it wasn't announced with their regular slate of releases, Venom: The Last Dance made its bow on the streamer on February 25th. They decided to really up their stealth release game with a dozen more titles on Saturday. That's in addition to the 12 already on the slate.

This turned what was already a strong debut slate into an outstanding group. You'll find iconic comedies with some of the most popular stars of Hollywood, a trio of classic romances, and some knife-edge thrillers. There's drama and action, too.

There's also a pair of underrated horror flicks ready for your screen. Best of all is the addition of the finest films from one the most influential directors of the past 40 years. Like all art forms, film is subjective. But rest assured, I'm not talking about Uwe Boll...

Mel Gibson movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Mel Gibson is the Oscar-winning actor and director who has had his fair share of highs and lows, due in large part to several self-inflicted scandals. Let’s look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1956, Gibson and his family moved from New York to Australia, where he first came to prominence as an actor thanks to George Miller‘s original “Mad Max” trilogy, plus leading roles in Peter Weir‘s “Gallipoli” and “The Year of Living Dangerously.” He had equal success in the US, starring in everything from action films (the “Lethal Weapon” franchise) to romantic comedies (“What Women Want”).

He first hit the Oscar jackpot with the 1995 historical epic “Braveheart,” in which he also starred as Scottish warrior William Wallace. That film brought his wins in Best Picture and Best Director. He had similar directorial success with the controversial box-office bonanza “The Passion of the Christ...

Mel Gibson's Rogert Ebert-Praised 'Ransom' Streaming for Free on Tubi
Image
Mel Gibson’s career has been a rollercoaster ride of successes and failures punctuated by some unpopular opinions and controversial moments. However, back in 1996 Gibson was still banging out some of his best work. This includes the action thriller Ransom, which has scored a huge resurgence on Tubi since arriving on the free streaming platform recently.

The film stars Gibson as Tom Mullen, a wealthy airline owner whose life is upended when his son, Sean, is kidnapped. Director Ron Howard delivers a blistering fast-paced race against time, which comes with several twist endings and strong performances from Gibson, Rene Russo, and Gary Sinise. Almost thirty years on, the film’s arrival on Tubi has underscored the constant demand for action movies, both old and new, on streaming platforms, and how very few pass by without a stop on a Top 10 chart somewhere.

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.

It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?

New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Why Helen Hunt Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
For a few years in the '90s, it seemed like Helen Hunt was destined to be a mainstay on the big and small screen alike forever. The actor landed her earliest movie role in 1977, playing a teenager in the disaster movie "Rollercoaster," which featured a singularly weird plot about a man trying to bomb an amusement park ride. Hunt continued to act over the next decade, taking roles in films like "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" and "Peggy Sue Got Married," plus the popular doctor drama "St. Elsewhere." But it wasn't until the '90s, when Hunt earned a trifecta of great, memorable roles, that she truly became a household name.

Hunt's big break came from "Mad About You," a 1992 sitcom in which she played one half of a New York City newlywed couple opposite Paul Reiser. Plotlines for the show mined married life for humor, but they...

Every The Last Of Us Video Game Actor Who Returns In HBO's Show
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us Part II.

Almost all the major voice actors from The Last of Us video games have roles in HBOs TV adaptation, with some of them even reprising their original characters from the games. Video game adaptations have been notoriously disappointing because they usually have no respect for the source material. But HBOs The Last of Us is an exception because the creator of the franchise himself, Neil Druckmann, is one of the showrunners. This has meant that the TV series is passionately faithful to the games its adapting in more ways than just sticking to the story.

In casting the TV show, Druckmann brought over most of the main voice actors from the video games. Since the voice actors behind the lead roles of Joel and Ellie arent the right age to play them in live-action, those parts were recast...

Lights, camera, comfy furnishings: why the ‘beige chic’ of Nancy Meyers is having a revival
Nancy Meyers
In her hit romcoms, the director’s sets were as popular as the films. Now trending on social media more than a decade after her last movie, her coveted look is back

In 2009, the film-maker Nancy Meyers was in an editing suite at Sony Pictures, fine-tuning the details of her next movie, It’s Complicated. That morning, her focus was the back garden of Jane, a successful Santa Barbara baker played by Meryl Streep. The garden included an extensive lawn, a swing-seat and a French-style potager garden, where Jane could wander about gathering ripe tomatoes in a fetching wicker basket. Meyers had already instructed an editor to erase dead trees and add a water feature, and now she was engaged in the process of smoothing out the yard’s remaining foliage. “Every plant that is spiky is removed from this movie,” was her instruction. “Keep it all soft.”

Meyers is...

Image
Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has tapped Scotty Landes (The Machine) to script Thicc, a new comedy based on Matthew Schneier’s 2019 New York Magazine article, “At the Russian Baths With the Big Boys of Brawn.”

The film follows an offensive lineman who, after seeing a career-ending injury cut his professional football dreams short, finds unexpected fame and fortune in the world of brawny male modeling. Todd Garner will produce via Broken Road Productions alongside Scoop Wasserstein via New York Magazine/Vox Media Studios.

Schneier’s article explores the rise and success of Img Models’ Brawn division, which focuses on plus-size male models, a groundbreaking initiative in an industry traditionally dominated by slimmer figures. Zach Miko, the division’s first recruit, highlights his journey from being mistaken for an electrician to becoming a sought-after model earning six figures. Despite initial skepticism, the division has flourished, reflecting a broader societal shift towards body positivity and inclusivity.

Twister Cast & Where They Are Now
Image
Twister, a 1996 disaster film, follows two storm chasers tracking violent tornadoes; it became a cult classic. Twisters, the upcoming sequel, releases on July 19, featuring a new cast and bigger, more threatening tornadoes. The classic film's iconic cast includes Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Lois Smith.

The 1996 disaster film Twister featured an iconic leading cast. The action movie follows the story of two almost-divorced storm chasers who are attempting to track down extremely violent tornadoes. Though it has a somewhat goofy and over-the-top premise, Twister has remained one of the 90s classic action movies to this day.

Twister became such a cult classic that it inspired the upcoming sequel film Twisters. Set for release on July 19, Twisters ups the stakes of the original Twister film by adding tornadoes that are bigger and more threatening than ever. Twisters features a leading cast including Daisy Edgar-Jones,...

Isn’t It Scary: Rebel Wilson rom-com Isn’t It Romantic gets a horror follow-up
Image
Back in 2019, Rebel Wilson starred in a meta romantic comedy called Isn’t It Romantic, which was released by Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema in the United States and Canada and received a Netflix streaming release throughout the rest of the world. Now Deadline reports that Isn’t It Romantic is getting an unexpected sort of follow-up – one that will dive into horror territory! This follow-up is called Isn’t It Scary.

New Line Cinema has hired April Prosser, who earned her first writing credit with the Netflix romantic comedy Look Both Ways, to write the screenplay for Isn’t It Scary. Look Both Ways had the following synopsis: On the eve of her college graduation, Natalie’s life diverges into parallel realities: one in which she becomes pregnant and remains in her hometown to raise her child and another in which she moves to LA to pursue her dream career.

New Line Developing ‘Isn’t It Scary,’ Follow-Up To 2019 Rebel Wilson Rom-Com ‘Isn’t It Romantic’; April Prosser Scripting
Image
Exclusive: New Line Cinema is in early development on Isn’t It Scary, a follow-up to its rom-com Isn’t It Romantic starring Rebel Wilson, multiple sources tell Deadline.

April Prosser (Look Both Ways) has been tapped to pen the script. We’re told Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside frequent collaborators Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo of Little Engine Entertainment, though these deals haven’t yet closed, as it’s early days here. No other talent attachments have been formalized at this time.

Playfully subverting and satirizing the conventions of the rom-com genre, Isn’t It Romantic grossed over $48 million worldwide upon its release via Warner Bros in 2019. Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, the film centers on Natalie (Wilson), an Australian architect living in New York City who is cynical about love and romance. The story takes a fantastical turn when Natalie, after a bump on the head,...

Paramount Developing ‘What Kids Want’ From Screenwriters Sam Pitman, Adam Cole-Kelly
Image
Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has launched development on What Kids Want, a new feature scripted by the Like a Boss duo of Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly, sources tell Deadline.

The film follows up the high concept comedies What Women Want (2000), starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt, and What Men Want (2019), starring Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan, both of which were distributed by Paramount. While the former centered on a man suddenly gifted (or cursed?) with the ability to hear the thoughts of women, the latter reversed the equation. The new film will, of course, involve a look into the minds of children.

Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo for Little Engine Entertainmemt. Matthews comes to the project after producing What Women Want, along with such rom-coms as 13 Going on 30, All My Life (alongside Garner) and Isn’t It Romantic?...
