In the modern media landscape, crossovers and shared universes are all the rage, especially in superhero films, but this was not always the case. Before the unprecedented success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most comic book movies were content to tell self-contained stories. This was true of the biggest superhero films from the early 2000s, including Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. Aside from a few Easter Eggs, such as J. Jonah Jameson lamenting that the name Doctor Strange was already taken in Spider-Man 2, the Spider-Man films had no connection to the wider Marvel mythos; Tobey Maguire's version of Peter Parker was the only superhero in his universe. However, a lesser-known television series tried to change that.

Venom #8 confirms symbiote colors matter, with red symbiotes being stronger than black. Red symbiotes signify a perfect bond with a host, potentially explaining their increased strength. The hierarchy of symbiote colors remains mostly unexplained, with green, yellow, and purple symbiotes' strengths unknown.
Within the Marvel community, fans of Venom have long debated whether or not symbiote colors actually mean anything. When the film Venom: Let There Be Carnage suggested a hierarchy of colors by acknowledging Carnage's terror simply by being "a red one," the actual comics gave a different explanation for why Carnage is red, but never offered a consistent meaning for differently colored symbiote characters. Until now.
In the pages of Venom #8 by Al Ewing and Bryan Hitch, Eddie Brock travels to the distant future where symbiotes have excessive power. He quickly discovers a much larger, seemingly stronger symbiote with noteworthy spikes sticking out of its body. Brock...

The unbelievable but perfectly deserved success of X-Men ‘97 gave fans one of the best TV/movie adaptations of the evergreen X-Men in recent years. The show, which was a revival of the classic 90s TV series, delightfully managed to stay consistent with the traditional arc while giving fans plenty to chew on for the time being.

However, one appearance in the recent X-Men ’97 series may give us a bit of a hint about what might come next. In episode 8 of season 1, Spider-Man makes a brief appearance. What’s more is that in Episode 10 both Peter Parker & Mary Jane made cameo appearances, alongside other Mau characters such as Iron Man, Captain America and the Fantastic Four.

Superhero fans are thoroughly enjoying the new X-Men ’97 animated series. The show is a continuation of the original X-Men: The Animated Series that launched in 1992. However, this recent release from Marvel Studios Animation has also got comic-book buffs wondering if they could soon get a long-awaited Spider-Man animated show.
Spider-Man’s animated cartoons have been a fan favorite over the past five decades. The first cartoon featuring the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler came out in 1967 and the superhero has been on a roll ever since. However, the character’s complicated TV rights have made it rather difficult to adapt the long-awaited Spider-Man ’98 show on TV.

The Marvel Animated Universe (Mau) started in 1992 with X-Men: The Animated Series, paving the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe over a decade later. The Mau included animated series like Spider-Man and Fantastic Four, dominating the 90s and influencing the success of later live-action adaptations. Marvel is capitalizing on nostalgia by continuing the X-Men: The Animated Series continuity with X-Men '97, potentially leading to more animated crossovers.
While the MCU may have popularized the concept of a shared cinematic universe, Marvel's first came 16 years prior. Since it debuted with Iron Man in 2008, the MCU has proven that a shared cinematic universe is an exceptionally compelling structure that helps to enrich the stories it tells by having dozens of movies feed into an overarching narrative. While other movie franchises have tried to emulate the success of this structure, none have matched the MCU movies, and it's likely because Marvel is well-versed in the process.

The hype for X-Men '97 can lead to a revival of other Marvel Animated Universe shows. Spider-Man is the most obvious choice for a revival, though The Fantastic Four and Iron Man cartoons can also benefit from a revival. Likewise, there's a chance to adapt elements from recent Marvel comics to this shared universe.
Decades after the original cartoon ended, X-Men '97 is set to take viewers back to the world of Marvel's animated mutants. As in the case of the classic show, it's set in the Marvel Animated Universe, which united various heroes long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This shared world consisted of numerous other cartoons, with one in particular due for its own revival.

The infamously unfaithful Spider-Man Unlimited was originally supposed to be a faithful adaptation of the webhead's first series. When Sony's 2002 Spider-Man film began development, the show was banned from using key elements of the character. Spider-Man Unlimited was still required to be produced, and ended up being Spidey's least successful show, even a quarter-century later.
When audiences think about Spider-Man, there’s a high chance that Tobey Maguire from Sam Raimi’s legendary trilogy is what comes to mind. At the same time, it's even likelier that audiences don't picture a cape, a rebel in a societal sci-fi war, or a space traveler when they think about Spider-Man. However, these odd ingredients are in fact Peter Parker's defining characteristics in Spider-Man Unlimited; not the game, not the comic, but a 1999 animated series that had more problems than it did viewers. Keith Giffen, known both as a comic book writer and artist whose characters have appeared in live-action franchises from Marvel and DC Comics, has died. He was 70 years old and had worked in comics since 1976.
Giffen was known for having a hand in the creation of characters including Lobo, Guardians of the Galaxy furry teammate Rocket Raccoon and the modern Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. He also wrote acclaimed runs of “Justice League” and the “Legion of Super-Heroes,” as well as creating the cult fourth-wall-breaking character Ambush Bug (a decade earlier than Deadpool).

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now the biggest Spider-Man movie to date, with appearances of multiple Spider-People and variants from all over the multiverse, making various movies, TV shows, and games canon. The success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse made way for two sequels that continue exploring the multiverse of Spider-Man characters, though separate from the current Marvel/Spider-Man multiverse over at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just like the first movie, Across The Spider-Verse is led by Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), this time accompanied by Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld).

This post contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
Spider-Man has almost as long a history in animation as he does in the comic pages where he originated. That's why the "Spider-Verse" films' conceit — placing different Spider-People together and representing them with different styles of animation — is so clever. While the original "Into the Spider-Verse" featured only six Spider-People teaming up, the sequel "Across the Spider-Verse" takes things into overdrive with hundreds of them. This fulfills the promise of a Spider-Verse.
Most of these Spider-People are simple cameos or easter eggs -- they're all going about their day in Miguel O'Hara's (Oscar Isaac) citadel on Earth-928 and the film rarely lingers on them. However, knowledgeable Spider-Fans will spot some stars among the crowd. "Across the Spider-Verse" treats all Spider-Man audiovisual media as part of one big web. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might boast one of the most irredeemable villains in the form of Chukwudi Iwuji's High Evolutionary. He's a narcissistic genius with a god complex who also happens to be responsible for inflicting immense physical and emotional trauma upon Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper/Sean Gunn). Given that most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's more enduring villains such as Thanos (Josh Brolin) and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) have had some tragic elements in their own backstories, this is a welcome change of pace. In Marvel Comics canon, the High Evolutionary has faced off against a number of foes from the Avengers to the X-Men...and one animated series, Spider-Man Unlimited, pitted him against none other than the Amazing Spider-Man.

In their final MCU outing, the Guardians of the Galaxy come up against their greatest foe yet in the form of the High Evolutionary. With Rocket's life in peril, the Guardians set about tracking down his creator, in order to deactivate a kill switch that's preventing them from administering life-saving treatment to their furry friend. However, the High Evolutionary is far more than simply the creator of a hyper-intelligent raccoon. The Guardians soon discover this mad scientist is considered a god by some and has created his own idealized world: Counter-Earth.
Counter-Earth is a world inhabited by the High Evolutionary's attempt at creating a perfect species. Using his work on Rocket and other test subjects as a basis, the High Evolutionary has mutated animals into evolved humanoid forms, in hopes of building the perfect society on Counter-Earth.

A screengrab from an unknown Across the Spider-Verse promo was shared on Twitter, confirming that the fan-favorite version of Peter Parker will indeed appear in the upcoming animated movie. While some Spider-Man fans were initially worried that the image was fake, Matt McDonald -- a lighter/composer at Sony Imageworks who worked on Across the Spider-Verse -- retweeted the image and confirmed that it was real. "I put a lot of extra effort into making him stay true to his Spectacular style. Hoping there is a larger resolution soon," McDonald wrote on Twitter. This is the second time Spectacular Spider-Man has shown up in Across the Spider-Verse publicity materials. He previously appeared on the movie's first poster alongside hundreds of other Spider-Man variants.

Uh-oh, some of you aren't going to like this. Spider-Man: The Animated Series has departed Disney+. But fear not Marvel fans as the show will return to the streaming service. Unfortunately, it's just not clear when that will happen, nor has it been made clear why the show was removed in the first place. In any event, for the time being, the fan-favorite animated show cannot be viewed on the service.
Recently, the 1994 animated series disappeared from Disney+. Previously, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, otherwise known simply asSpider-Man, had been available to stream in its entirety on the service. Fortunately, this is not a permanent removal. Twitter user Patty Bates took to Twitter to share an exchange she had with a Disney+ customer service rep about the situation. The rep stated the following.

While it doesn’t quite stack up to its DC counterpart, the Marvel Animated Universe stretched through the ’90s and had some real bangers. Much like the modern cinematic universe, various cartoons were connected as one giant piece of continuity. X-Men and Spider-Man were the biggest hits while Iron Man, Fantastic Four, and others had less of an impact. The closest thing they had to a climactic culmination was the Secret Wars adaptation near the end of Spider-Man’s final season. After that, they kind of limped into oblivion with a few shows that didn’t catch on.
That leads to the biggest difference between the Marvel Animated Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When it came to the latter, the real beginning came from the Avengers brand name. Nick Fury appearing at the end of Iron Man to discuss the Avengers Initiative was a sign of what these movies...

Whether you’re a toonhead or prefer live-action fare, Disney+ UK will surely have something Marvel-ous for you, and that’s because it’s in a prime position to bring you a wider selection of Marvel comic book TV series content than its Us counterpart.
Disney+ UK will feature five seasons of ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and is also streaming Hulu’s Runaways. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of classic Marvel animated series to catch up on, like Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and an opportunity to check out newer planet-hopping adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
There’s also further live-action series waiting in the wings – a Loki standalone series, a team up between Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the debut of Ms Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight, among others, plus an animated What If? show that might have you asking yourself that very question about the possibility of more What If?...

Disney+ is more than just the greatest hits from the House of Mouse. The service is set to roll out original feature films, TV shows, and documentaries. For instance, more episodes of The Clone Wars season 7 are set to arrive this month.

After 37 years of fighting crime in the same outfit, Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, has been given a new costume. Spider-Woman was introduced to the Marvel comics universe in 1977, and the new outfit keeps the spirit of the original, but offers a different and cool new modern look. It includes more leather, black pants, two-toned gloves and a jacket that goes "from streetwear to spider-bedecked superhero gear in just a few snaps."
When talking about the costume, the comic's editor, Nick Lowe, said he "wanted a costume that walked the line between superhero-ready and something a woman would wear in the real world. But for the most part they're clothes to kick ass in." The redesign will also start a tone change for the series that will see the character return to a more 'street-level' approach to crime fighting. Lowe says:

Apart from a few short-lived variations, Spider-Man has had the same costume since his first appearance. The same can be said for Spider-Woman, but following her debut as a playable character in the Spider-Man Unlimited mobile game with a very different appearance (screenshots from the game can be found below), Jessica Drew will also be seen in the new costume in the comic books from March onwards. That will mark a different direction for the character as the focus turns to her being more of a street level superhero. "As much as I'm a fan of spandex and it has its time and place, I felt Jess as a character could move away from that for a good long while," says Spider-Woman editor Nick Lowe. "Spider-Man isn't really a detective — he swings around looking for trouble, whereas Jess needs to go and figure stuff out and dig things up, and...

America has watched lot of Spider-Man over the years. After all, the newly released The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the sequel of a reboot of a trilogy of movies that are barely a decade old. The new wave of ubiquity is self-evident. Yet the superhero also spent years and years on television and in video games. The original Spider-Man cartoon series began airing in 1967 and there have been eight more iterations over the years. This is a totally different situation than, for example, that of Captain America whose cartoon life begins and ends with The Marvel Super Heroes in 1966 (which I featured here last month). There’s also been something of a glut recently. Spider-Man Unlimited aired from 1999-2001 followed by Spider-Man: The New Animated Series in 2001, The Spectacular Spider-Man in 2008-2009 and Ultimate Spider-Man in 2012. None of them were particularly successful, either critically or commercially. So it makes sense to take a look back at (and...

These past few months have been pretty superior for Spider-Man. For those of you who aren't up speed, writer Dan Slott has placed the mind of Doctor Otto Octavius—a.k.a. Doctor Octopus—into Peter Parker's body within the pages of Marvel's "Superior Spider-Man.". Now, as if that weren't exciting enough, Slott will be re-introducing a fan-favorite futuristic character: Miguel O'Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099.
Making his big comeback in issue #17 of "Superior Spider-Man," Miguel O'Hara had another brush with fame following "Spider-Man 2099's" cancellation way back in 1996. Following the end of Fox's successful—and long-running—"Spider-Man" cartoon, they looked to 2099 for inspiration.

The Ravencroft Institute first appeared in Spider-Man Unlimited #1 (1993). It was set up by the government and run by Dr. Ashley Kafka, who had successfully reformed a Marvel villain named Vermin. The Institute would house many of Spider-Man’s villains.
Some have compared it to Batman’s Arkham Asylum.

Also, will we catch a glimpse of other Spider-Man villains that may appear in future films?

As The Amazing Spider-Man hits UK Cinemas on Tuesday (our review Here), there is no doubt that it will divide opinions, which is not a surprise as so many are still shocked and confused about why Sony decided to reboot a franchise that was so young in the first place. Whether or not you enjoy new director Marc Webb`s direction of our web-slinging hero, there is no doubt that you would have enjoyed the generations of animated TV series which Spider-Man has graced.
Here is a countdown of the best ones.
5. Spider-Man Unlimited
After the well liked 1994 version of Spider-Man was cancelled it would be almost impossible to better the show doing the same thing…so they didn’t. This Spider-Man was completely different to the show that came before it. Spider-Man’s suit was different, he could turn invisible and had sonic weaponry; it was even set on a different planet.

He most recently scored for a new ABC show with Sea World called Sea Rescue that is a part of Litton’s Weekend Adventure Block premiering Saturday morning, April 7. We also talked about all of the video game composing he’s done and how that’s given him a large variety of work to create.
David, what musically is different in the two seasons of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?
David Ari Leon: Musically they’re very consistent, there wasn’t a change from seasons other than it was just an evolution of the story. So it was continued forward from what was done already. For me it...
