Apple TV+ continues to build out its already impressive library of sci-fi TV shows with “Murderbot.” The new comedy from showrunners Paul and Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”) joins “Silo,” “Foundation” and “Severance” as yet another high-concept, star-studded sci-fi offering from its streaming service. As far as procedural dramas go, CBS is the unrivaled king of such programming. "NCIS," "CSI," and even dating back to "Gunsmoke," the network has a knack for crafting a long-running hit. Such was the case when they rebooted "Hawaii Five-0" with a new cast for modern viewers in 2010. The series was another success, lasting a full decade and airing well over 200 episodes. Daniel Dae Kim's Chin Ho Kelly was a major part of the show, for the first seven seasons at least. But Kim, along with his co-star Grace Park, left the series ahead of season 8.
Many viewers were certainly frustrated to see these fan favorites leave the show. That begs the question, why did Kim leave? The answer is surprisingly simple. It all boiled down to a pay dispute. Kim, who was coming off of his role as Jin-Soo Kwan on "Lost,...

Earlier this year, news broke that comedic favorites Stephanie Hsu and Quinta Brunson would join forces for the first time for a new comedy movie, Par for the Course. Their respective stars have shot into the stratosphere in recent years, with both flexing their abilities to make people laugh, cry, and more between Hsu's Joy Ride and Everything Everywhere All At Once roles and Brunson's Emmy-winning efforts as the star and creator of Abbott Elementary. The prospect of linking them together opens up the possibility for a truly riotous comedy, especially with Brunson penning the script alongside her creative partner Justin Tan, who will make his directorial debut with the film. For Hsu, one of her favorite things about the collaboration, however, is just how adorable a pair the two stars make on-screen together.

The box office record-breaking success of "Wicked" is once again proving the crowd-pleasing chops of Jon M. Chu, who had previously demonstrated them via the massive success of a certain swanky romantic comedy to which he was connected long before becoming its director. Based on the eponymous novel by Kevin Kwan, 2018's "Crazy Rich Asians" topped the box office in its release week and went on to gross over $239 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. It's safe to say that it's a movie with a lot of fans.
Thankfully, there are several other films you can queue up if you count yourself as one of those fans. Whether you're drawn to the perfectly executed rom-com plotting, to the Asian American representation, to the themes of familial displacement and culture clash between North America and Asia, to the snarky sense of humor, or to the ritz and sumptuousness of the wedding...

In the week leading up to the most divisive, high-stakes and exhausting presidential election in modern American history, Ronny Chieng spent three nights manning the Daily Show anchor desk. As a politics buff and a longtime correspondent of the Comedy Central institution, he’s more than game to guest host. But he’s also aware of how much the work had changed since Trevor Noah tapped him for the gig back in 2015. “I’ve been there long enough where I get the rhythm of it,” says the Malaysian stand-up and actor. “But it’s become a bit like the emergency room, watching car-wreck victims come in every day. You just get desensitized.”
Fortunately for the 38-year-old, it’s not all comedy triage. The show keeps him on a long leash, allowing frequent breaks to tour (his latest stand-up special, Love to Hate It, hits Netflix on Dec. 17) and tackle a...

Summer is winding to a close, though the blistering sun has not yet received the memo. That means the final days of vacationing or summer road trips are in order. Of course, horror has taught us the myriad of ways that the open road can induce abject terror and stress; flat tires are the least of your summer worries in horror.

Season 2 of Silo, Apple TV's dystopian sci-fi original, will premiere later this year exclusively on the streaming platform on November 15, 2024. Set to join the ensemble cast for season 2 is Steve Zahn, who we had seen previously in The White Lotus, but whose career in Hollywood started with '90s films like That Thing You Do! and Joy Ride. The character Zahn will play has not yet been confirmed, but considering Season 1's finale, it'll probably be someone from "up there."
What is Silo About?
In Silo, humanity, at least what's left of it, is surviving miles below Earth. The last 10,000 humans live in an underground shelter that has the shape of a silo and where new rules have been established. Trying to find out about the past is forbidden, but apparently, records from the past were destroyed centuries ago. Leaving equals death,...

“Poker Face” is back and better than ever! The mystery series is getting ready to start filming its second season for Peacock. Show creator Rian Johnson announced on Instagram that they started shooting new episodes on July 1st. The new season is lining up some really famous faces too. Giancarlo Esposito from “Breaking Bad” and “The Mandalorian” joined the cast in a mystery role. I’m guessing he’ll be someone trying to outsmart Charlie. Katie Holmes...

Kesha has shared “Joy Ride,” her new single and the first piece of her work not released under a Dr. Luke-related record label. The pop star had initially teased the song on Twitter, writing “You’re right, I am a bitch” alongside a video snippet. Check out the new track below.
Though the pop star had long since stopped working directly with the producer, as 2017’s Rainbow was Kesha’s first full-length project without a Dr. Luke production credit, each of her five albums have been released under a Dr. Luke-associated label (either RCA while she was signed to him or his imprint Kemosabe Records).
Now, with “Joy Ride,” the singer has finally completely disassociated herself with the producer, as her contract with Kemosabe and Dr. Luke has officially ended. She is now legally permitted to release music independently. “First day I’ve owned my voice in 19 years,” she wrote on social media.

The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) has revealed the nominees for its annual Muahs Awards, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 leading the feature competition with four nominations and Maestro close behind with three noms.

Bradley Cooper’s Netflix Leonard Bernstein drama Maestro collected noms for period and/or character makeup, period hairstyling and/or character hair styling and special makeup effects.

Candy Cane Lane is a light, pleasant little holiday treat, much like the candy its name suggests. The family comedy takes place on one of those streets nearly every town has, the one where neighbors out-do each other with the decorations, competing for the neighborhood honor of being named the annual winner. This story centers on one of those suburban families, headed by dad Chris Carver (Eddie Murphy). Chris Carver does indeed carve, in this case, handmade holiday decorations, which are overlooked for the prize every year. He is married to Carol (Tracee Ellis Ross), and they have three kids, Nicholas (Thaddeus J. Mixson), Joy (Genneya Walton), and Holly (Madison Thomas). Seeing a pattern here?
In case you missed, the film thoughtfully points that Christmas naming theme out for you in one scene.

“Christmas is not about money,” says Pepper (Jillian Bell), the passive-aggressive Christmas store elf in “Candy Cane Lane.” “Except that it is.” She could almost be describing Christmas movies. From the start, they’ve paired a celebration of the Christmas spirit, in all its enveloping toastiness, with a theme of raw economic desperation. You can trace this right back to the original Christmas movie — “A Christmas Carol,” and by that I don’t even mean the assorted film versions (though I grew up with them and especially loved the 1951 version with Alastair Sim) but the Charles Dickens novella, published in 1843, which essentially invented the modern Christmas.
It was a tale built around money, and the fear of poverty as embodied in Bob Cratchit. A century later, “It’s a Wonderful Life” was essentially a remake of “A Christmas Carol,” albeit it with a small-town American mensch at the center and Scrooge...

A neighborhood holiday house-decorating contest intensifies to an unbelievable degree in Reginald Hudlin’s peculiar Christmas film, Candy Cane Lane. The stakes are high for Chris Carver (Eddie Murphy), a Yuletide obsessive determined to win first place for the most festive home in his neighborhood. Every year, he comes in second to his irritating neighbor, Bruce (Ken Marino). This season will be different — although not in the way Chris expects.
It starts with a layoff. After being unexpectedly and unceremoniously fired from his job, Chris finds himself bereft of purpose. He struggles to tell his family the truth and urges his wife Carol (Tracee Ellis Ross) to keep the news between them. Instead of being honest with his three kids, Chris vows to make this Christmas the best one ever. His daughter, Joy (Genneya Walton), is going off to college next year, which means Carver family gatherings won’t be the same.

Can one man save Christmas? Chris Carver will do anything to make the holiday memorable in “Candy Cane Lane.” The Prime Video film offers a light-hearted spin on the usual seasonal madness, with families competing for the best decorations. Carver is willing to make a deal with an elf this time that could spell trouble for the entire town. ‘Candy Cane’ comes from a script by Kelly Younger — whose previous credits include “Muppets Haunted Mansion.” Acclaimed director and producer Reginald Hudlin helms the project, his first since 2022’s “Sidney.”

There’s a lot going on in this troubled-girl-on-a-journey story, which recalls the late-’90s proliferation of books like Elizabeth Wurtzel’s Prozac Nation and Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted. Brittany Snow’s directing debut doesn’t so much add to that canon as dust it down a bit for a new generation, and its success is mostly attributable to its empathetic star Courtney Eaton — the deserving winner of a SXSW Special Jury Recognition for Performance — whose low-key work anchors a needlessly busy film that never quite settles down.
A lot is packed into the opening salvo, from the moment we see Riley (Eaton) sitting on the curb outside a forbiddingly nondescript building, scrolling through pages and pages of narcissistic Instagram influencers. It will come as no surprise when we find out, shortly after that, that she’s been in for a fairly serious disorder she’ll describe variously as...

"Joy Ride" is the big, broad, studio comedy to beat this year, an incredible directorial debut with one of the funniest scripts in a while, and a cast that should get all the praise in the world because they just became the dynamic quartet to watch.
Ashley Park plays Audrey, an Asian woman raised in the U.S. by her adoptive white parents in suburban Washington. Given how monolithic their community is, it's no wonder Audrey would end up becoming best friends with Lolo (Sherry Cola), the only other Asian American kid in town. What starts as a convenience, however, quickly develops into a beautiful, if a bit dysfunctional, friendship. While Audrey rises to become a prominent lawyer with a lifetime of achievements and successes, Lolo still doesn't get out of the starving stage of the life of an artist, crashing at Audrey's guest house while trying to convince anyone...

Adele Lim’s debut film Joy Ride will make you cry your eyes out, in addition to showing the audience that women know how to party hard.
Written by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong & Teresa Hsiao, the film stars Ashley Park, Stephanie Hsu, Sherry Cola and Sabrina Wu as four friends on a global adventure of self-discovery — but also drugs, sex and comedy. I expected nothing less from a movie that was originally titled Joy F**k Club, which I find hilarious.
Audrey (Park) is an adoptee growing up in an all-white household, and Lolo’s (Cola) parents just moved from China. Their friendship starts on the playground when Audrey is approached by a bully and Lolo punches him in the face.

Adele Lim’s Joy Ride is a raunchy and propulsive feature directorial debut set in motion by a sweet chance meeting. It’s 1998 and Lolo (Milana Wan) and her parents have just moved to White Falls, a suburban and very Caucasian enclave in Washington state. Their first meaningful encounter with the neighborhood — which Lim introduces in a zippy montage — and its residents is at a local playground. “Are you Chinese?” the Sullivans (David Denman and Annie Mumolo), a white family, asks them. The Chens (Kenneth Liu and Debbie Fan) exchange incredulous looks before snapping back: “Yes, but we speak English.” And, they add, they’re from California.
The Sullivans are thrilled; it turns out their clumsy inquiry was a sincere attempt to help their daughter Audrey (Lennon Yee), a Chinese adoptee, make a new friend. So begins Audrey and Lolo’s relationship, which blossoms from there into an affectionate sororal bond.
