The sci-fi thriller Subservience explores the chaotic dangers of artificial intelligence and androids, and it counts on the talents of a well-known cast. Sci-fi, horror, and thriller have found a theme in common in recent years thanks to the rise of AI in different areas – and, of course, filmmakers have seized this topic to tell terrifying stories about the pros and cons of AI. Among them is Subservience, directed by S. K. Dale and written by Will Honley, which takes the audience to a near future where technology has advanced to the point of developing lifelike androids powered by AI.
Subservience focuses on Nick’s family after his wife, Maggie, is hospitalized due to an unspecified (but threatening) heart condition. Unable to manage the household on his own, Nick buys an AI android, which they refer to as “sim”, to help him around the house and with his kids while Maggie is in the hospital.

Beating the Guardian of Faith in Baldur’s Gate 3 is essential if you want to unlock one of the strongest weapons in the game. The enemy is something of a mini-boss that can be encountered and killed in the Rosymorn Monastery, just before entering the Githyanki Crèche at the end of Act 1. The Guardian of Faith is an optional opponent but is connected to the Blood of Lathander in Baldur’s Gate 3, so if you want the Legendary weapon with Radiant powers, you must get past the knight.
At the feet of the Guardian of Faith is the Ceremonial Battleaxe, an item that is needed to solve the first puzzle in the Blood of Lathander quest. This is one of the four weapons that need to be placed on the respective pedestals on the upper floor of the Rosymorn Monastery. Accurately solving the puzzle will eventually grant you the Dawnmaster’s Crest,...

As the world mourns the loss of George Michael, who was found dead on Christmas Day at age of 53, the Grammy winner’s music lives on — including a three-decade career of incomparable live performances.
Here are 10 of the icon’s best:
1. “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” (1984)
Okay, so he may have been lip-syncing. But Wham!’s debut on the UK’s Top of the Pops in 1984 gave the world its first glimpse of the full-throttle passion Michael put into his performances. Dressed in the band’s iconic “Choose Life” T-shirt, the then 21-year-old snapped and danced his way around the stage with glee.

6th Update, Tuesday, 3 Pm: Rentrak Theatrical filed the weekend’s actuals with Warner Bros.’ American Sniper counting a four-week cume through yesterday of $110.4M. Talk about the spoils of war: American Sniper propelled the 2015 box office, in its first 19 days, 3.6% percent over the same frame last year with $667M. It stands to reason that this would be the highest-grossing four-day Mlk weekend of all-time with $248.5M after American Sniper broke a slew of records, read Eastwood’s career-high bow, best three-day opening ever during January and February. Previous Mlk record was 2009 with $231.5M when Sony comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop zoomed up a four-day bow of $39.2M. American Sniper had the biggest theater average of the four-day weekend with $30,100, followed by Sony Classic’s Still Alice, which chalked up $20,685 PTA or $248K in 12 venues.
The consensus is that American Sniper is going to hold for another two weekends. Wide releases...

With the last-minute brouhaha over The Interview’s play in an estimated 300+ indie engagements, it would seem that the Christmas Day box office is all about the Sony political comedy and nothing less. While rival studios expressed alarm last week about The Interview’s presence in the market, they’re rather apathetic about its return. Will The Interview cut into other major titles’ showtimes in major markets such as Los Angeles, New York and Dallas? “No, not really. First, people have to figure out that it’s out there,” says one studio chief, while another observed, “The Interview is playing a bunch of little art house and sub-run theaters. If they were in the circuit first run houses it would be a different story.”
Since The Interview fell off tracking, there’s no barometer for insiders to project what it could actually rake up over four-days. And the film’s...

Joss Whedon, lauded king of fandom, purveyor of wisdom and de facto overseer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, celebrates his 50th birthday on Monday (June 23).
Whedon's always had a knack for taking pre-established characters – whether it's The Avengers or a gang of talking toys or the cast of Speed – and making them just that bit more quippy and emotionally rich and awesome. But it's his original small-screen characters that remain his most beloved.
Below, Digital Spy counts down our top fifteen Whedonverse characters. You can vote for your favourite in the poll below, then take to the comments to rank about all the rankings we got wrong and all the favourites we've inevitably left out.
15. Dr Horrible
Neil Patrick Harris's "aspiring supervillain" is never at any point successfully villainous. He's a more immediately loveable extension of Buffy's Nerd Troika – the perpetually overlooked semi-recluse who can barely string a sentence together around his crush,...

Stefan tackles criticism of Dollhouse, a brave series he argues is unfairly maligned in Joss Whedon's body of work...
Joss Whedon, it’s fair to say, is not short of fans. Between Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Cabin in the Woods, Dr Horrible, and latterly his work with Marvel (not to mention his adaptation of a play by that little-known writer Will Shakesman), he has an enviable back catalogue, and Whedonites (as I promise not to refer to them again after this sentence) rank among the most devoted, rabid and occasionally frightening fans in geekdom. If you want an idea of just how passionate people are about the man’s work, write the phrase “I am a leaf on the wind” in any comment thread below a Whedon-related article, and hang on to something. Said thread may experience some slight turbulence and then explode.

Heidi Klum is finally talking — well, sorta talking — about her split with husband Seal. And she’s doing it in the best way possible: by looking soft and beautiful off the cover of Elle’s April issue (an alternate cover from the Jessica Simpson one). We’ve actually been waiting to hear from her, since we’ve so far just read the (ex) couple’s joint statement and Seal’s take on the marriage breaking up. Heidi’s sort of addressed it, in a general way, but we’re glad she’s opening up a little more. Of the divorce, the supermodel reveals, “I feel like I’m in the eye of the tornado. It’s emotions inside of your body that are a tornado. And then the outside world doing all this craziness — with you wanting it or not wanting it — is another tornado. But as hard as it is,...

This week, Luck picked up the pace and demonstrated what it’s really good at: depicting the triumphs and the despair of its world, while taking the viewer along for the ride.
Part of what enhances the show’s highs and lows is that horse racing, and the universe of gambling in general, are based on chance. To some extent, everyone in Luck finds this exhilarating and addicting, but they are bound by balance. For every peak there is a valley. Jerry's addiction is a burden; Marcus and Joey's choice to live and breathe the track is almost heart attack-inducing; Ace and Escalante must tightly control their worlds in an attempt to bring order to chaos.

First off, I have to tell you that this page may load slow. We're making an awful lot of calls to the Amazon Api here, and that's bound to monkey with things. If you have no idea what that means... it's shiny. Please note also that, for the same reason, you may find, depending on traffic, that not all of the Amazon details will load properly. I apologize for that, it's just the nature of the beast, and the fact that the Api wasn't really meant for such things. If you refresh, it will probably fix.
You may have heard me mention this giveaway quite a while ago, and it's taken me a long time to figure out what sort of format to put things in, and I kept added things. Eventually it became too much to really give any kind of run down on the items, so I decided...

Ending their seven-year marriage was a decision that came "after months of non-stop arguing," a source close to Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony revealed to People. The bickering was sparked by issues on a movie set, jealousy on the "American Idol" stage, and Lopez's suspicion of Marc's infidelity.
An insider close to Anthony says the cheating accusations are not true, and believes the 42-year-old singer always supported his wife's career. "They started to see things differently,...

San Diego — Jazz saxophonist James Moody is best known for his 1949 "Moody's Mood for Love," but when he recorded the hit that eventually was elected into the Grammy Awards' Hall of Fame, he said, he was just "trying to find the right notes."
"People later said to me: 'You must have been very inspired when you recorded that.' And I said: 'Yeah I was inspired to find the right notes!'" Moody told the San Diego Union-Tribune in February.
The song later was recorded by Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse and others. Longtime fan and confidante Bill Cosby called it a "national anthem."
Moody, who recorded more than 50 solo albums as well as songs with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and B.B. King, died Thursday at San Diego Hospice after a 10-month battle with pancreatic cancer, his wife said. He was 85.

There isn't much competition in this category, admittedly, but MacGruber is the funniest Saturday Night Live-based film since Wayne's World. We'd have breathed a sigh of relief if it were merely not awful. The fact that it's actually pretty good, a gleefully silly action parody that doesn't run out of steam before it's over, is just icing on the cake.
The recurring SNL sketch it's based on is a spoof of the 1980s TV series MacGyver, famous for its resourceful, duct-tape-wielding protagonist. MacGruber, played by Will Forte, is ostensibly just like MacGyver, with the joke being that he's actually dangerously inept. (Each sketch ends with him and his crew being blown up.) The movie version, written by Forte and SNL writers John Solomon and Jorma Taccone (Taccone also directed), expands MacGruber's character to include several more traits: cowardly,...

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject,...

That sound you hear outside is a geek nation's head exploding. Why? Because Apollo and Faith just totally had the sex! Well, okay, not really. But the Dollhouse season premiere did have Battlestar Galactica alum Jamie Bamber playing a super-smooth arms merchant who gets married to Eliza Dushku's Echo, so there was some inter-nerdverse smooching going on. As for the premiere itself, I'm kinda of two minds about it. There were moments full of Joss Whedon awesomeness -- those beats of quirky hilarity, emotional devastation, happy fightness that we've come to know and love over the years. But it...

Labor Day weekend is coming up, and it's a holiday that marks the end of the summer movie season along with summer itself. All the kids are heading back to the classroom for another dreaded year of school and (for those in L.A. like myself) the weather starts to cool... hopefully. While fall usually isn't seen as a cinematic hotbed, with the blockbuster summer season over, there are still plenty of quality films to check out at the box office. This year we have Megan Fox's possessed body, a sensational animated film and a new zombie adventure. There's a lot more that I'm looking forward to this fall, so here is a comphrehensive look at what you can expect from this fall movie season.

Our love for Dollhouse and all-things Whedon has no bounds. We’re big fans of pretty much everything Joss does and followed along through all the trails and tribulations during the Buffy and Angel years, with Firefly and Serenity and now with his latest TV project Dollhouse.
The show has had its ups and downs and it looked for a while that it would not be coming back for a second season at all. Fortunately, it was renewed, although a bit changed from its first season. We’ve spoken to Jane Espenson about the changes for season 2, featured an interview with the man himself and series star Eliza Dushku and now, via the folks at Access Hollywood, we’ve got another video here for you today showcasing more with Eliza about what fans can expect from season 2 of Dollhouse.
In typical cryptic fashion she doesn’t reveal too much more...

Despite being mostly tight-lipped when it came to revealing many of the story developments of the second season of Dollhouse, Joss Whedon did hint at it having "a couple of other faces you recognize." As time wore on though, so did his penchant for secrecy. Whedon dropped two names: Alexis Denisof and Summer Glau. Now, any Buffy and Angel fans can attest to the greatness of Alexis Denisof, who played the bumbling "watcher" Wesley who was originally sent to look after Faith (played by Eliza Dushku). Whedon fans will surely enjoy that bit of TV synergy, but Summer Glau is naturally the real draw here. Whedon made sure to clarify that, at this point, Glau is still a "maybe". They're still working out the details, but if everything goes as planned, she will indeed be on the show. I'm curious to see what part she ends up playing, because there's...

- While what else did you expect? It’s a diner party where the guests drink (sometimes get drunk) and make their speeches a tad to long (Beatty), it’s a predictable awards show where newbies make insignificant victory speeches and where acting vets have at least one great line to deliver. It’s a moment where I get to know more about what’s going on in T.V land, and a moment when I ponder whether I should ever give a mini-series a chance. Kudos go to the Hfp for picking Borat for best comedy actor (I didn’t think they had the ‘balls’) – but the real question is Dreamgirls for real? Despite picking up 3 awards, I have yet to see it, and probably won’t but will it be a contender during the bigger party next month. We’ll see how the noms turn out next week.
