Viola Davis took home her first Oscar this year, and the phenomenal Fences and How to Get Away With Murder star had her biggest fan by her side: her husband, Julius Tennon. Viola and Julius, a theater veteran and TV actor, met on the set of City of Angels in 1999, just weeks after Viola prayed for a husband. "I was the loneliest woman in the world, and someone said, 'You should just pray for a husband,'" she told Page Six. "I said I wanted a big black man from the South who looked like a football player, who already had children, who maybe had been married before. Three and a half weeks later, I met my husband." The couple tied the knot in 2003 and recently renewed their vows with a star-studded second wedding ceremony; they share a daughter, Genesis, who they adopted as a newborn in 2011, as well as...

The Golden Globes are one of Hollywood’s loosest nights, but some people manage to keep their priorities straight in their acceptance speeches, remembering to thank their better halves.
Gosling’s moving speech was in part a tribute to his “lady,” Eva Mendes.“You don’t get to be up here without standing on the shoulders of a mountain,” he said. “While I was singing and dancing and playing piano … my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother with his battle with cancer.”

New Indie: Over the years, Los Angeles has been captured on film as everything from a paradise to a hellhole, but no film has ever shot the city quite like the acclaimed Tangerine (Magnolia Home Entertainment), which follows trans sex worker Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) around various parts of the city as she tracks down her man, who cheated on her while she spent a month in prison. (To add insult to injury, she got locked up in the first place for taking the blame on his behalf.) Followed around by best pal Alexandra (Maya Taylor, a brilliant comic foil), Sin-Dee gets herself into one scrape after another in an orange-hued City of Angels. Director Sean Baker (Starlet, Prince of Broadway) shot the entire movie on an iPhone, but the results are a lot more richly cinematic than...

Coleen Gray in 'The Sleeping City' with Richard Conte. Coleen Gray after Fox: B Westerns and films noirs (See previous post: “Coleen Gray Actress: From Red River to Film Noir 'Good Girls'.”) Regarding the demise of her Fox career (the year after her divorce from Rod Amateau), Coleen Gray would recall for Confessions of a Scream Queen author Matt Beckoff: I thought that was the end of the world and that I was a total failure. I was a mass of insecurity and depended on agents. … Whether it was an 'A' picture or a 'B' picture didn't bother me. It could be a Western movie, a sci-fi film. A job was a job. You did the best with the script that you had. Fox had dropped Gray at a time of dramatic upheavals in the American film industry: fast-dwindling box office receipts as a result of competition from television,...

Fans of Fox's show Bones have actress/singer Diana Ross to thank for one of the lead characters. Tamara Taylor, who has played the pivotal role of Dr. Camille Saroyan for six seasons, was inspired to become an actress by Diana Ross. "I saw Mahogany and Lady Sings the Blues when I was little and thought, that's what I want to do," recalls the Canadian-born Taylor. It was an odd career aspiration given that little Tamara was, by her own admission, really shy. "I was an only child and my mom threw me into some modeling classes to get me out of my shell," she says. Taylor didn't follow the usual path of aspiring actors -- no childhood dance or acting classes.
The daughter of a Black musician father and a Scottish mom who worked as a property manager, Taylor grew up in Toronto. She says she was "a bit...

Los Angeles — Octavia Spencer inspired her formidable character in "The Help," but the actress turned into a softy Sunday as she accepted an Oscar for the role.
"Oh, thank you," a tearful Spencer said as many in the audience rose to their feet. She expressed gratitude to her family, her colleagues from "The Help" and her native "state of Alabama" as she received the best supporting actress trophy.
The actress played tart-tongued maid Minny Jackson in the movie, which depicted Southern life as the 1960s civil rights movement unfolded. The film is based on Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel "The Help," and the author drew on her friendship with Spencer in creating Minny.
The two were introduced by a mutual pal, "The Help" writer-director Tate Taylor.

Her astonishing ability to flesh out even the slightest of roles means that Viola Davis is that rarest of Hollywood A-listers – a woman who is both black and in her 40s. Here, the star of The Help reveals why she wishes there were more roles for people just like her

Writer/producer/director Michael Emanuel dropped us a line today to let us know production has wrapped on the upcoming horror omnibus thriller titled Terror Bytes. High School Musical's Corbin Bleu is co-producing and appears in one of the film's segments, marking the star's first foray into the horror genre.
Synopsis:
With Korean vampires, Mexican zombies, Cajun conjurers, and the Irish undead...or as the producers like to call it, “just another night in the City of Angels”, Terror Bytes tells four multi-ethnic, interwoven stories that all take place in and around Los Angeles. According to Emanuel, “It’s the horror version of Robert Altman’s Short Cuts as characters from each segment intersect with the others.”
Corbin Bleu’s segment, titled "Clowned", tells the story of a young street hustler (Bleu) who gets bitten by a clown at a birthday party and begins to undergo a Kafkaesque metamorphosis with horrifying consequences.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
While the Peacock has struggled in recent years, those were like a cakewalk compared to this past season as the network became a very public punching bag over the debacle of its 10pm Jay Leno show experiment, the Leno/Conan media wars, and ultimately the general failure of its shows which all struggled in the ratings - most visibly its two new medical dramas and the once proud "Heroes".
By the end of the season the only real success stories to talk about were the network's well-regarded but not spectacularly-rated Thursday night comedy block (Community, 30 Rock, Office), and "Chuck" which only just got renewed last season and is proving to be one of the network's...

More and more actors are joining "True Blood" as the fresh faces who will appear in the third season. Beside finding an actor to play the heavily recurring character Alcide Herveaux, the show also cast three additional actors for Yvetta, Reverend Daniels and Joe Lee Mickens.
Showrunner Alan Ball chose to pick lesser known actor to play the werewolf Alcide. Joe Manganiello, best known as Owen on "One Tree Hill" gets his major break as Sookie's aid in finding Bill who was kidnapped at the end of season 2. In the book by Charlaine Harris, Alcide is summoned by Eric and will have a fling with Sookie. However, Alcide is emotionally attached to his on and off girlfriend Debbie Pelt. An actress is yet to be found to play Debbie.
Ball said previously that Alcide would probably appear in the third episode. "This good-looking, rough-looking, but articulate and basically decent man is not what he seems.
