The programme's Internet fan-base is so strong that creator Tim Child applied for a National Lottery grant to produce a ninth series entitled "Knightmare VR", using "avatar" technology to digitally project the player into the dungeon rather than have a blindfolded player in a blue room. A pilot was produced, featuring Hugo Myatt as the voice of a new digital version of Tregard. However in Autumn 2005 producer Child announced that work on "Knightmare VR" was being halted after no UK broadcasters showed an interest in it. Child also reported that he now favoured going back to the "blue room" style of production for any future attempt at a revival.
A Knightmare inspired game known as KMV is being played over the Internet, mixing prerecorded footage of characters with computer-generated live action of players. The cast and crew are all members of the on-line Knightmare fan-base and it is being led by the team captain of the winning team of Knightmare in season 8. The attempt to conquer the dungeon is filmed and broadcast on the KMV website every year - recreating the atmosphere of the original game show in an original manner.
In the animated title sequence, the horse rider on his way to liberate Dunshelm from the Gruagach is believed to be a young Treguard.
"Knightmare" premiered on "Children's ITV" at 4:45pm on Monday September 7th 1987.
