Entertainment News: Teen Idol David Cassidy Dies at 67
Fort Lauderdale, Fla – He was the heart throb-iest of the teen heart throbs when he came onto the scene in the early 1970s. David Cassidy was the driving force of the manufactured-for-tv pop act The Partridge Family, which provided a soundtrack for their era. Cassidy died in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the age of 67, on November 21st, 2017.

David Cassidy fought the demons of his sudden fame for virtually the rest of his life after the Partridge Family era, admitting an alcohol problem after being arrested for a DUI in 2013. Earlier this year, he announced that he was living with non-Alzheimer’s dementia, which ran in his family. But during the burst of infamy he had in the early 1970s, there was no greater beloved pin-up teen than Cassidy, who ushered in a parade of dreamy 1970s boys like Donny Osmond, Vincent Van Patten, Leif Garrett and his half brother, Shaun Cassidy.

Meet Artist Sergio Arau: From Cafe Tacvba Music Videos to the 'A Day Without a Mexican' Sequel
Sergio Arau: Filmmaker, musician, band leader, song writer and visual artist.

I met him recently at the terrific Loft Film Festival in Tucson Az along with his wonderful charming and smart wife Yareli Arizmendi.

To get this out of the way, his dad is the famous Director Alfonso Arau. In addition to directing "Like Water for Chocolate"/ "Como agua para chocolate" (1992), his directing credits include "A Walk in the Clouds" (1995) with Keanu Reeves and "Picking Up the Pieces" (2000) with Woody Allen.

Sergio the son was born in Mexico City. His wife -- they met on the set of "Like Water For Chocolate" -- is the amazing Yareli Arizmendi. They are partners in "life and film".

Their first production was a cabaret show in Mexico. "Penny Envy" was the name of it and it satirized the Us-Mexico "free trade agreement" of 1992. Yareli wrote and performed the monologues while Sergio wrote the songs, sang and played the music. The show played both in the Mexico and the United States through the Performance Art Network. The show was in universities in California, NYC and Boulder.

Sergio attended Cuec Film School from 1976 to 1980. There he directed short films, one of which went to the Film Festival in Havana. He graduated with a feature script about kids in San Luis Potosi who kidnap the Virgin of Guadalupe. He was going to make it but then in 1982 the Us $ vs the Mx Peso had a 20 times increase and his budget went away.

His "day job" during film school was as a political cartoonist for two papers, La Jornada and Uno Mas Uno.

He stopped playing music all together after the infamous mass government killings of students in 1968 when the Mexican government tried to stop all protest rock n roll, so the music went underground. In 1983 he formed the band, Botellita de Jerez.

In 1985 the band opened Rockotitlan which to this date is recognized as the breaking ground and breathing room for the 80's rock scene and important contemporary Mexican bands such as Cafe Tacvba and Caifanes amongst others. The club had two unalienable rules: Music played must be original and compositions must be in Spanish.

He began in 1990 to make music videos of his songs. He did the concept, the visuals and music. He then began to direct for other groups and other genres.

In 1998 MTV awarded him best rock video award for the Cafe Tacvba version of "Alarmala de Tos" one of Sergio's original songs.

In 1992 he moved to San Diego and by 1994 was disconcerted by the the anti-immigrant sentiment whipped up by Governor Wilson's Proposition 187.

Yareli, as a way to deal with California's blind spot, came up with "A Day Without a Mexican." The idea that if California or the nation experienced one day without a single Latino, the reality of the valuable contribution and interdependence of all would sink in.

He and Yareli were financially backed in 1997 by the Fine Arts Center Museum of Chicago to secure the premiere of the short film "A Day Without a Mexican" in 1998.

At the Guadalajara Film Fest 1998, the short won the Audience Award. It was there that Alta Vista Films (producer of Iñarritu's "Amores Perros") approached the team to work on the feature-length version. Written by both, directed by Sergio and starring Yareli, the film, with a Us $2 million budget, was released in the U.S. May 14, 2004 and six months later in Mexico. It was Mexico's highest box office for that year. The film was Televisa's first distribution experience it in the U.S., where a limited release in California, Texas, Chicago yielded Us $4.5 million in theaters, and more than 500,000 DVD were sold.

Their teaser campaign consisted of a billboard in the heart of Hollywood that read: "On May 14 there will be no Mexicans in California." People reacted strongly to the message calling radio and TV stations. Viacom, owner of the billboard space, took it down after 3 hours fearing riots. As a result there was huge U.S. national press coverage including the Wall Street Journal featured story on page one and Dan Rather Evening news.

In 2007 he shot "Naco es Chido"/ "Kitsch is Cool", a Mexican "Spinal Tap" featuring his band, Botellita de Jerez. As a distribution strategy, he took the film on the road, screening it and following it up with a live concert with the band. This lasted for 3 years, 2010-2012.

He is currently working on the sequel: "Another Day Without a Mexican: This Time It's Personal."...

Tracy Morgan Is Going Back on Tour With Picking Up the Pieces
Tracy Morgan
The Tracy Morgan comeback is in full swing: After the tragic accident on the New Jersey Turnpike that put him in a coma and killed his friend Jimmy Mack, the comic made a surprising and emotional appearance at the Emmy Awards. He since followed that up by hosting SNL this past weekend, doing a monologue with his 30 Rock colleagues and joking, "People are wondering, 'Can he speak? Does he have 100 percent mental capacity?' The truth is, I never did. I might even be a few points higher." Now he's following that with a stand-up tour: Tracy Morgan: Picking Up the Pieces, kicking off at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, on February 5 and extending until the end of May. In a statement Morgan said that comedy was like riding a bike: "You don't forget where the pedals are." ...

The comedian, 46, returns to the show this week for the first time since being injured in a tragic car accident that put him in a coma last year.

After being discovered in 1995 – at age 19 – by manager Inga Vainshtein, she recorded her first album, “Pieces of Me,” at Neil Young’s ranch studio. The disk was a monster hit,...

Strange But True: Jewel could have died with Tupac in Vegas
Jewel at an event for Valentine's Day (2010)
My favorite Jewel song? "Intuition." There, I said it. Speaking of the yodeling '90s superstar, the "Howard Stern" regular appeared on the show Monday morning and spilled a little-known (if at all known) fact: Tupac Shakur invited her to Las Vegas with him the same weekend he was killed. Whaaat.  Given that the singer-songwriter was out promoting her new memoir "Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story" and accompanying album "Picking Up the Pieces," I'm going to assume this tidbit is included in the book. In any event, Howard did most of the talking as he recounted the episode as he understood it: "You met Tupac Shakur at the MTV Awards, this is a crazy story. You're at an after-party. He asks you to come to Vegas with him, and you decline. You kinda were like 'eh, that's not my thing.' Three days later Tupac was shot in Vegas.

Multiplatinum and Grammy-nominated artist Jewel — the small-town horseback rider who got her start in biker bars and eventually racked up more than 27 million worldwide album sales — has come a long way since her childhood in Homer, Alaska. With her 12th studio album, Picking Up the Pieces, being released Friday — 20 years after her debut effort, Pieces of You, hit shelves in 1995 — Jewel speaks to The Hollywood Reporter about the long, winding path that brought her this far and the sexual harassment she's had to endure since the very beginning. Exclusive: New Clip From The Man With The Iron Fists 2 Pulls No Punches

Fast forward a little over two years and we’re now standing on the verge of the sequel’s arrival on DVD and Blu-Ray, and We Got This Covered has an exclusive clip to share with you for The Man with the Iron Fists 2.

Picking up the pieces from its predecessor, the martial arts follow-up will once again center around Thaddeus (played by the aforementioned RZA), who finds himself drawn into battle once more despite his best efforts to put his violent past behind him.

Blu-Ray Review: Kingdom Of Heaven Ultimate Edition - A Primer for Exodus
A decade before Ridley Scott brought Exodus: Gods and Kings to the big screen, he tackled another epic about religion, faith and pragmatism. Kingdom of Heaven was Scott's film about the Crusades, a rousing, rambunctious film that tried to be a follow up of sorts to his previous sand-and-sandles epic, Gladiator. The project itself actually came out of a failed attempt to tell the tale of Tripoli, a potential Russell Crowe starrer that fell into development limbo. Picking up the pieces of that production, Scott secured the services of a then-untried screenwriter William Monahan to abandon the Tripoli script and concentrate instead on the tale of Jerusalem during the Battle of Hattin during the 12th century. Monahan crafted a lengthy script that told not...

Fading Gigolo | Blu-ray Review
After making a substantial profit at the box office during its Spring 2014 release (via Millennium Ent.), the mild media fury surrounding the continuing Mia Farrow/Woody Allen saga was still in popular parlance, which many assumed might hurt ticket sales. Apparently this wasn’t the case and critics and audiences seemed to embrace a chance to see Allen in front of the camera in a lightly entertaining role. Repeated viewings may crumble Fading Gigolo‘s mild comedic offerings, but its warm theatrical response should ensure a healthy shelf life.

John Turturro’s latest directorial effort was helped by the sizeable presence of co-star Woody Allen. But beyond drama from the gossip rags, Turturro’s got a perversely curious concept on his hands by casting himself as a reluctant gigolo with Allen starring as his affable pimp. That said, this central concept kinda sorta fizzles out as the film becomes a...

Picking up the pieces from the last grisly encounter, Saw III presents puzzle-setting, cancer-stricken sadist Jigsaw and his not-so-lovely assistant Amanda with a fresh batch of victims to play with. While a female doctor is forced to keep the sick puppy alive, a man driven to desperation by the death of his son is about to enter a whole new world of pain. More of the twisted same for gore lovers but those of a nervous disposition won't need telling to turn away now...

Fading Gigolo
Fading Gigolo

Directed by: John Turturro

Cast: John Turturro, Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Vanessa Paradis, Sofia Vergara

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: May 2, 2014 (Chicago)

Plot: Fiorvate (Turturro) is pimped out by his friend Murray (Allen) when two women (Stone & Vergara) are interested in a threesome. Unexpectedly, Fiorvante falls for a reclusive widow (Paradis) who hasn’t been touched by a man since her husband died.

Who’S It For? Those who like seeing star-struck writer/directors sell their project’s souls to past influences.

Overall

An actor/writer/director once conceded that masturbation is “sex with someone I love.” Then what room does that leave for acting/writing/directing in a film in which your master played by Woody Allen sings your praises, and Sofia Vergara and Sharon Stone hype you up to be a stallion? And most importantly, where’s the comedy in that?

The masturbatory...

Lapsed Interest: Turturro’s Latest Doesn’t Live Up to Promise

There’s bound to be an odd draw to John Turturro’s latest directorial effort, Fading Gigolo, which may be helped or hindered by the sizeable presence of co-star Woody Allen. But beyond drama from the gossip rags, Turturro’s got a perversely curious concept on his hands by casting himself as a reluctant gigolo with Allen starring as his affable pimp. That said, this central concept kinda sorta fizzles out as the film becomes a more tender observation about loneliness and connection that lends the film a rather uneven tone, unable to satisfy either the audience seeking a frothy adult sex comedy or those surprised by a rather somber (yet more satisfying) subplot.

Forced to close his rare and used bookstore that has been in his family for generations, Murray (Woody Allen), has a proposition for his best pal,...

Woody Allen at an event for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Exclusive: New Stills of John Turturro and Woody Allen in 'Fading Gigolo'
Woody Allen at an event for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Woody Allen acts in so few of his own films these days that it's surprising whenever he takes on a project helmed by someone else. Yet last year, Allen appeared at Tiff in John Turturro's "Fading Gigolo" as the "manager," so to speak, of Turturro's character after he decides to become a professional Don Juan. Millennium Entertainment has released new stills exclusively to Indiewire. How's Woody going to fare under someone else's direction for the first time since 2000's "Picking Up the Pieces" and "Company Man?" Hard to say before the film's release on April 18, but for now, check out the stills below.

The Face Of Love Review
If The Face of Love proves anything, it is that Annette Bening is still one of the finest American actors working today. In Arie Posin’s new drama, which boasts shades of Douglas Sirk and an attempted Hitchcockian suspense, she gives everything to the role of Nikki Lostrom, a lonesome widow who pursues a relationship with a man who has an uncanny resemblance to her late husband.

In the opening scene, Nikki sits, sullen and anguished, by the pool of her immaculate Los Angeles home, gripping a glass of wine as she remembers finding her husband Garrett (Ed Harris) dead, strewn on the beach after drowning during a trip to Mexico. Distracted by these harrowing memories, she drops the wine glass. Picking up the pieces of broken glass, Nikki does not even grimace, even when she grips the shards so tightly her hand starts bleeding. Bening is a fearless actor...

Naya Rivera Shows Off Her Long Legs On Sexy ‘Rolling Stone’ Cover
Is that former McKinley High School cheerleader Santana Lopez we see showing off them stems on the cover of ‘Rolling Stone’? We’ve always known Naya was a sexpot, but these racy new pics definitely take things to the next level.

You’re going to have to wait until Nov. 8 to grab a copy of Naya Rivera‘s jaw-dropping Rolling Stone cover, but the gorgeous 26-year-old actress gave us a sneak peek when she posted an image of the cover on her Instagram account. The Glee star is most definitely growing up!

Naya Rivera: Legs For Days

If we were Naya, we’d be pretty proud of that pic, and if her social media accounts can be used as an indicator, she wholeheartedly agrees. Naya posted the pic — which shows off some seriously toned legs and a deadly backside — with the caption “Mamì was a rolling stone” on Nov.

Jenna Ushkowitz: I Hope ‘Glee’ Ends ‘The Way It’s Supposed To’
While we’re all completely upset with the news of ‘Glee’ ending after season six, the stars have faith that the writers will end it in the right way. Jenna Ushkowitz, who portrays Tina Cohen-Chang on the show, spoke exclusively to HollywoodLife.com and revealed what she hopes for at the end — and what she’s hoping doesn’t happen.

Glee will sadly come to an end after season six, creator Ryan Murphy confirmed on Oct.16. While we know that the Glee cast doesn’t want to “over stay their welcome” on the show, Jenna Ushkowitz is just hoping to stay in high school a little bit longer.

Elephantmen #51 Finds Mystery In Its Distractions
Writer: Richard Starkings

Artist: Axel Medellin

Publisher: Image Comics

“It should be simple,” Jack Farrell says on the first page of Elephantmen #51. He’s referring to the grisly murder scene he’s standing over (“A Guy. A Girl. A Gun. Blood.”) but he could just as easily be talking about Richard Starkings’ Elephantmen series. What started out as a mascot for his lettering studio has turned into a grand tapestry of all different kinds of stories, all centered around Hip Flask, a genetically engineered human/hippopotamus hybrid, bred for war now earning a living pounding the streets as part of the police agency for creatures like himself. A gumshoe, if you will. Animals as detectives and policemen and businessmen. It sounds funny but Starkings isn’t writing stories but animals. And that’s what makes Elephantmen complicated because he’s writing about people and you can write any kind of story about people.

Turturro lands an unlikely co-star for Fading Gigalo: Woody Allen
Not since the forgettable 2000 comedy Picking up the Pieces has Woody Allen starred in a film he didn't direct. But John Turturro managed to coax Allen back into acting for Fading Gigolo with an enticing role: an elderly but novice pimp.

And it wouldn't have occurred if Allen and Turturro didn't happen to share a barber. Though Allen and Turturro knew each other somewhat (Turturro had a small part in Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters and was nearly cast in two other Allen films), they weren't close.

"I knew he liked my work," Turturro said in a recent interview. "But I don't sit next to him at Knick games.

Fading Gigolo premiered over the weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival. In the film, Turturro plays a New York florist who begins making money on the side (with the help of Allen's character) by rendering his services to women. ...

'Fading Gigolo' Trailer: Woody Allen Is A Pimp
How does an Average Joe get two mega, mega hotties like Sofia Vergara and Sharon Stone to want him? At the same time even? Easy. Charge 'em a thousand smackers for his "services" and pretend to be a total pro at the ménage à trois.

"You're an experienced lover. Why shouldn't you get paid for it?" That's the logic of Woody Allen's bookseller-made-pimp hustler character as he tells his sole client, John Turturro (who also wrote and directed the flick) as a shy but super cash-hungry fifty-something, that he's essentially signed him up for sex slave duty in this first trailer for "Fading Gigolo."

"Of course, I saw myself getting a small fee," he adds after coaxing the wary gent into the lascivious business scheme. Pretty soon, the ladies are ready to get a taste of the goods, so to speak, and it's up to Turturro's Fioravante to put...

See Woody Allen as a Pimp in John Turturro's "Fading Gigolo!"
The last time Woody Allen appeared in a movie not written or directed by him, it was for 2000's "Picking Up the Pieces" for director Alfonso Arau. The prolific writer/director had said he's open to acting in "other people's films" but no one has ever asked him except for a few movies in the last 30 years.

So now, enter John Turturro. His film "Fading Gigolo" has Allen playing a pimp with witty one-liners of course! Allen is co-starring with Sofia Vergara, Sharon Stone, and Turturro himself. "Fading Gigolo" will make its world debut at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
