Luc Picard and Julien Poulin in Le dernier souffle (1999)

Very good movie

Detective movies are very rare in Quebec. This ons is the rare exception. This is not a detective movie like Americans do: no explosions, no murders in slow motion, no cars jumping out of building windows. Just a very intelligent story, with a fine acting. Luc Picard is doing a wonderful job as the star, and so is Julien Poulin, as his father. Like the guy from Québec city, just before me, I'm very pleased with most of the movies from Quebec in the second half of the 1990's. This one is very good example. We're pround of that (Nous en sommes fiers!)

Intelligent, original and an absolute suspense!

One of the best Canadian movies I've seen yet. Julien Poulin delivers the best performance of his career. It's nail-biting suspense full of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Keep them coming Montreal!

Very not bad for something "made in Quebec"

This is definitely not the best movie of the year, but you've got to see it. I think Luc Picard (the leading character) has ever been better but Julien Poulin is at his best. The scenario is excellent and if the producer had invested a couple of extra bucks it may have been an international success. I take the occasion to mention that Quebecers have recently released many good movies and I hope they'll keep doing it.

Unwatchable, tired, cliche.

Once this movie got its world-weary Montreal cop to "America," boy did it get tiresome. Has the director ever actually been to the States, or did he just make it up from watching old TV shows? Abusive Southern cops, a "frameup," etc. ZZZ.

gone south

got off to an intriguing start. next a very convoluted family set up: the lead is a cop with a leftist father and a rightist/fascist brother; wife left him for his partner. then came an improbable story line. together with all the cardboard caricatures. plutonium stealing Russians. rotten red neck cops. corrupt FBI. revolutionaries. terrorists. whore with a heart of gold. naked women. naked male victims. did we miss anybody else? of course we have to make everybody going thru the motions. the bad guys sneer, the third degree, kids pining for absent dad etc etc. and in the midst of a supposedly climax, our hero and his dad lay in bed inside hostile territory - bonding? watch this if you wanna learn how not to make a movie!
