Uma Thurman, Gérard Depardieu, and Tim Roth in Vatel (2000)

Goofs

Vatel

Edit

Factual errors

William of Orange is referred to as "King of Holland". He was Stadhouder of the Seven United Netherlands, never King of Holland.
Vatel's death was even more gruesome than depicted in the film. Instead of cutting his throat, real Vatel allegedly stuck his sword against a door and impaled himself in it.

Anachronisms

During the evening banquet on the second day, there are fireworks. The music played and sung (heard) is 'Music for the Royal Fireworks'. G. F. Handel composed this piece in 1749. The movie is set in 1671. It had not been composed by that time.
Effiat quotes Melville's Captain Ahab (Moby Dick) when playing with the whale, but it was another 200 years before Melville wrote Moby Dick.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

At the start of the garden feast, the music begins with a brief woodwind duet. Though the two musicians play oboes, the oboes make the sound of recorders.
