Eagle-eyed fans of the new reality show Later Daters may have noticed a surprising name in the credits: executive producer Michelle Obama. The eight-episode relationship series, which hit Netflix’s Top 10 list after it premiered on the streamer Nov. 29, follows six Atlanta-area singles between the ages of 56 and 71 as they navigate the modern dating world. The sweet, funny and occasionally racy show from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, reflects the Obamas’ interest in making programming that speaks to a wide audience, one interested in topics well outside the world of potentially starchy or partisan political fare.
“It’s no secret that people feel like if it’s coming from the Obamas, that it’s going to be a specific thing and that maybe it’s not for them because of who it’s from,” says Ethan Lewis, Higher Ground’s senior vp nonfiction. “But we’re telling everyone’s story.

“The Later Daters” brings together six baby boomers for a shot at finding love in the next chapter of their lives, though love isn’t the only thing the single seniors will take away from their time on the Netflix series.
With the cast members leaning on guidance from behavioral scientist Logan Ury as well as their grown children or companions, the Netflix series is just “as much a transformation show as it is a dating show,” according to Boardwalk’s Sarina Roma, who executive produces the series alongside Jonathan Hausfater and Ethan Lewis, who EPs for Higher Ground, where Michelle Obama also executive produces.
“If Mrs. Obama is going to produce a dating show, it can’t just be releasing older folks into the wild and [putting] them in a fish bowl and see what happens,” Lewis told TheWrap. “We need to give this some structure and some sort of...

Colman Domingo plays a media pundit who stumbles on a murder he fears he’s being framed for in the trailer for The Madness, the upcoming conspiracy thriller from Netflix, that dropped on Monday.
“I got a bull’s eye on my back,” a paranoid Domingo, in the role of Muncie Daniels, says at one point in the fast-paced teaser after he visits a murder scene deep in the woods of the Poconos and finds he’s the only witness to a crime.
As the walls close in and he fears a set-up to make him take the fall, Daniels strives to reconnect with his estranged family — and his lost ideals — in order to clear his name. The eight-episode thriller, with the Emmy winner in the starring role, is set to bow on Netflix Nov. 28.
The ensemble cast for The Madness includes Marsha Stephanie Blake, Gabrielle Graham, John Ortiz, Tamsin Topolski and Thaddeus J.

When Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum stepped foot on the sidewalk in front of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre for the world premiere of Netflix’s Starting 5, an announcer’s voice cut through the music to announce the arrival of a “world champion” over the loud speakers. Yes, there was an announcer and a deejay at the high-energy Sept. 23 premiere, which featured a hardcourt in place of a traditional red carpet and rows of basketballs to set the scene.
“It’s a hell of a feeling, man,” Tatum told The Hollywood Reporter minutes later of being introduced to the crowd in that way, thanks to his Boston Celtics winning the NBA championship last season, a victory followed by a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. “We accomplished something that’s almost impossible to do, something we worked very hard to do. I’m glad we made it happen.”

Hayden Christensen's performance as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Star Wars might be the actor's most iconic, but here are 10 brilliant roles Christensen has played in other shows and movies. Anakin Skywalker is not only one of Star Wars' best characters but also one of the most influential figures throughout the entire Star Wars timeline. While Darth Vader already existed before Christensen stepped into the role in the prequel trilogy, he brought something truly unique to the character and humanized the man Anakin had been before he donned the mask.
Christensen has since returned to Star Wars movies and TV shows, first in Obi-Wan Kenobi and then in Ahsoka. These appearances were arguably some of Christensen's best acting to date, but his acting chops haven't only been shown in Star Wars. Convicted felon Randall Miller is planning on returning to a film set, and this time, the state of California may be helping him.
After pleading guilty to criminal trespassing and involuntary manslaughter in the on-set death of camera assistant Sarah Jones while shooting the film “Midnight Rider” in Georgia, Miller served a year in prison and is still currently under probation. Despite this, as reported by Variety, California has granted Miller $1.5 million in tax incentives to shoot in the state for an upcoming independent feature for which he and his team are currently seeking financing. Per the terms of his probation, Miller is unable to direct this project but has written the script and will serve as a producer.
The tax credits granted were for a production called “Supercrip,” which, according to a description, tells the story of a quadriplegic Uber driver whose life changes after meeting “a self-centered movie star.

In her 2022 Toronto curtain raiser “The Swimmers,” telling the true story of two Syrian sisters and their emotional and gruelling journey to Europe to escape the civil war, director Sally El-Hossaini went to great lengths to ensure authenticity, using real-life refugees both in-front of and behind the camera.
For Counterpoints Arts, the U.K. charity that focusses on culture and migration, “The Swimmers” offered a great example of how projects involving refugees and migrants could — and should — be developed. As the organization’s co-founder and director Almir Koldzic explains to Variety, El-Hossaini made sure that “people with lived experiences were represented on every level of production and were respected in that process.”
Since it launched in 2012, Counterpoints has worked alongside the U.K. arts scene as part of its efforts to “inspire social change and enhance inclusion and cultural integration,” putting on numerous film screenings concerning the subject, many during the annual Refugee Week,...

Vera Farmiga and Taissa Farmiga are sisters and both stars in the Conjuring franchise, encouraging fan speculation about their relationship. There is a 21-year age difference between Vera and Taissa Farmiga, with Vera being the eldest of the seven siblings in their family. Although they haven't shared any scenes in the Conjuring franchise, their characters' connection has been canonized, and they have previously acted together in Higher Ground and At Middleton. There is hope for future collaborations.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Rustin, Netflix’s biopic of civil rights icon Bayard Rustin. Colman Domingo stars in the film, which is directed by Tony winner George C. Wolfe and hit theaters and the streamer in November after its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
The screenplay co-written by Julian Breece and Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black focuses on one of the main architects of the 1963 March on Washington, where more than 200,000 hear Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall. Rustin was a fulcrum in the civil rights movement, working alongside the likes of King, Adam Clayton Powell Jr and Ella Baker, though as an openly gay man in that era he often had to work behind the scenes. He challenged authority and never apologized for who he was or what he believed.

Like “Testament” — the 1983 movie that imagined the fallout, both nuclear and psychological, after an atomic bomb is dropped on American soil — “Leave the World Behind” depicts a plausible doomsday scenario from the perspective of a handful of ordinary characters. Not military experts, not scientists, but two families obliged to shelter under the same roof out in the Hamptons while something scary unfolds a few hours away, off-screen, in New York.
As the stress-prone matriarch of one of these families, Julia Roberts utters a line that earns a big laugh near the start, partly because America’s sweetheart isn’t supposed to say something so dismissive of everyone else on the planet, but also because many audiences can probably relate. Staring out the window of her Park Slope apartment, she pronounces, “I fucking hate people.” The name of Roberts’ character is Amanda Sandford, but it might as well be Karen, such is the rush-to-judgment,...

When Barack and Michelle Obama made the unusual post-presidential move of partnering with Netflix to launch Higher Ground Productions, it was often reported that they cited “Get Out” as the kind of film they were interested in making. Invoking Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning debut, which uses horror tropes to make an unambiguously progressive point about race relations in America, sent a clear message to potential collaborators. The Obamas wanted it known that they had something to say, but weren’t interested in producing cinematic homework.

Between “Beckham,” “Quarterback” and the nationally captivating “The Last Dance,” we are clearly living in our peak sports docuseries era. And now four-time, NBA champion LeBron James and hall of famers Peyton Manning have combined with the Obamas’ production company to contribute their own sports series centered around the NBA, Variety has confirmed.
James’ SpringHill Company (which he started with business partner Maverick Carter) will join Manning’s production company Omaha Productions and the Obamas’ Higher Ground. The series will divide up each episode following various NBA athletes as they live their lives, similar to the Netflix docuseries “Quarterback,” which followed three NFL quarterbacks during the 2022-2023 football season.
Higher Ground’s “American Factory” won the Academy Award for best documentary in 2019 and past films “Crip Camp” and “Becoming” were both nominated. The production company currently has a first look deal with Netflix, so assumptions are being made that this...

Another major sports docuseries is in the works, and this one has some major star power behind it.
Lakers star LeBron James and his SpringHill Company is in talks with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground for a series that would follow professional basketball players, a source familiar with the discussions confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. The format would bring the same approach to the NBA that Omaha’s Quarterback brought to the NFL.
The NBA is also expected to be involved in the show, much as NFL Films is a partner on Quarterback. The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, says that the show will likely end on Netflix, where Higher Ground has a first-look deal, and where Quarterback emerged as a successful addition to the genre earlier this year.

Colman Domingo is demanding the spotlight for his next film role. The "Candyman" and "Euphoria" actor portrays queer civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in Netflix's upcoming biopic, "Rustin." Per the streamer, the movie will chronicle Rustin's rise as the "architect of 1963's momentous March on Washington," where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech. According to the movie's trailers, which arrived on Aug. 28 and Oct. 19, "Rustin" is also expected to spotlight some of the obstacles the titular figure faced during his lifetime, including police brutality and criticism over his sexuality.

Netflix this morning dropped the full-length trailer for its civil rights-themed biopic “Rustin,” executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama through their Higher Ground production company and starring Emmy winner Colman Domingo in the lead. It tells the story of the unheralded (until now) movement leader Bayard Rustin (Domingo), the architect of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. The trailer abundantly features Domingo of course but also snippets of most members of the all-star cast, which includes Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, Cch Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald. Watch the trailer above.
Produced by Oscar winner Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty”), “High Ground’s” Tonia Davis and five-time Tony Winner George C. Wolfe (who also directs), “Rustin” has quite a pedigree. It’s also co-written by “Milk” Academy...
