In Review: It’s Not Too Late for the Movies to Reject AI

The following article is an excerpt from the latest edition of “In Review by David Ehrlich,” a biweekly newsletter in which our Chief Film Critic and Head Reviews Editor rounds up the site’s latest reviews and muses about current events in the movie world. Ben Mankiewicz is never someone who I expected to find on the wrong side of film history. The face of Turner Classic Movies since Robert Osborne’s death, in addition to being the grandson of “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and the grand-nephew of “All About Eve” director Joseph L. Mankiewicz,” the Hollywood scion is nothing less than a living emblem of the sanctity and enduring value of 20th century cinema. Delivered in a nasal but welcoming voice that’s capable of making 100-year-old masterpieces sound like vital artifacts and spectacular entertainments all at once,...

Josh Gad Exits Hollywood Bowl Jesus Christ Superstar After Covid Test
Josh Gad in La Reine des neiges (2013)
Josh Gad has bowed out of the Hollywood Bowl’s three-night concert staging of Jesus Christ Superstar after testing positive for Covid-19, the actor announced on Instagram just two days before the August 1 curtain. He had been set to deliver the comic show-stopper “King Herod’s Song” but wrote that he would not risk the health of colleagues or audiences, adding that he would return only if a negative result arrived in time.

Performances run August 1–3 at the 17,500-seat amphitheatre, the venue’s first summer musical since the pandemic hiatus. Director-choreographer Sergio Trujillo leads a company headed by Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as Jesus and Grammy nominee Adam Lambert as Judas, with Broadway names Phillipa Soo, Raúl Esparza, Milo Manheim and others in principal and ensemble roles. Playbill notes that Lambert will issue a studio single of “Heaven on Their Minds” on opening night, underscoring a promotional push that continues despite the cast shuffle.

Martin Scorsese talks about his planned Jesus film
Image
Martin Scorsese still plans to make a new film about Jesus, with filming likely to push back until his next crime epic is finished.

Next up for Martin Scorsese appears to be a return to the gangster genre, this time with a Hawaiin-set crime epic that will see him collaborate with Dwayne Johnson. That project is set to shoot next year and will see the legendary filmmaker reunite once again with Leonardo DiCaprio, with Emily Blunt also set to star.

After that for Scorsese is his Jesus project, a film that he was reportedly close to shooting last year before electing instead to push it back.

Martin Scorsese was, this week, being feted with a lifetime achievement award by the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, and while there the filmmaker talked a little about his planned project, saying: “I’m still working on it, because I’d like to give...

“We Wanted It to Be as Authentic as Possible”: Dallas Jenkins Reveals What Sets ‘The Chosen’ Apart
Image
For Dallas Jenkins, it’s been all about authenticity since day one. The creator, director, and co-writer of Prime Video’s hit series, The Chosen, recently addressed fans in an Instagram post, sharing why he thought the title connected with so many people around the world. At the center of it all, Jenkins believes that the popularity and the show’s ability to resonate with so many is due to the creative choices made that would portray its primary character — Jonathan Roumie’s Jesus — as he was in the Bible. This meant leaning into Jewish customs and practices that Jenkins said have gotten lost in other Jesus-centered titles. Using the word “authentic” as his north star, Jenkins explained,

“On day one of writing, six years ago when I was in my basement, we put up a word on the wall on a big white piece of paper that just said ‘Authentic’. Everything that we did,...

Jimmy Kimmel Roasts His Employer and Boosts ‘60 Minutes’ at Disney Upfront
Image
Jimmy Kimmel typically doesn’t pull many punches in his annual appearance/roast at Disney’s upfront, but his monologue Tuesday carried something of an existential edge.

“I might not see you again. This could be it,” the Jimmy Kimmel Live host told the audience of ad buyers in New York. “… I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know a lot of you over the last 23 years — and I also know that many of you are worried that AI might take your jobs. But I don’t think it will. I don’t believe a computer — even the most powerful computer — will ever be able to do what you do. And you know why? Because no computer wants to do what you do. Your jobs suck. Every year, our audience gets smaller, and we tell you it’s bigger, and we want more for less. It’s exhausting, I know.

Jimmy Kimmel Performs Traditional Disney Upfront Stand-Up But Ends With Support For ‘60 Minutes’: You Have The Money To Support Journalism”
Image
The tradition continues: Jimmy Kimmel wrapped Disney’s upfront presentation Tuesday with yuks about the competition like the naming of Comcast’s Versant and that “wrinkly Peacock who’s finally old enough to watch CBS.”

After Disney’s 80-minute presentation that included an off-key musical performance by Peyton and Eli Manning and an “Alien invasion” to promote Noah Hawley’s new Alien: Earth, Kimmel kicked off his annual appearance with a pre-taped skit from his daughter’s maternity room that featured Dr. Dre in scrubs.

That’s right: Kimmel’s about to be a grandpa!

After offering naming rights for his grandkid to the advertising world, Kimmel showed up live on stage at the Javits Center to deliver his much-anticipated bon mots before ending his monologue with a quick plea to advertisers to support shows like 60 Minutes.

“You have the power because you have the money to support journalism,...

Stephen Colbert Slams Chicago Pope for Speaking in Italian and Spanish: ‘Speak English Like Jesus Did’ | Video
Image
Everyone loves the Chicago pope, but few people are more excited about Pope Leo Xiv than Stephen Colbert. The CBS host channeled his former “Colbert Report” persona on Thursday night as he celebrated the election of the first-ever American pope.

The late night host started off his opening monologue by getting his audience to repeatedly chant “Pope-s-a! Pope-s-a!” But that elation didn’t come without some criticism, specifically about how Pope Leo Xiv spoke in both Italian and Spanish in his first address.

“Hey, I’m an American. I shouldn’t have to press 2 for pope. Speak English like Jesus did,” Colbert said.

He then joked that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost changed his name to Leo “in honor of St. Leonardo of Caprio, who famously decreed ‘I’m pope of the world.'” But the real highlight of Colbert’s papal celebration was his impression of Pope Leo.

“Hey der,...

'Beast in Me' Reveals First Look at Russell Crowe Mma Drama
Image
Russell Crowe has already proven himself in the Colosseum in Ridley Scott's Gladiator. Now he's training a new fighter for the Mma octagon in the upcoming mixed martial arts action film Beast in Me. Mma movies have been rather hit-or-miss. Entries in the Never Back Down and Undisputed franchises (in so much as the latter can be called an Mma franchise) have received mixed reviews from audiences and critics, while Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton's Warrior is the undisputed pound-for-pound Goat of the sub-genre. But with the talent of Russell Crowe and the rest of its star-studded cast, Beast in Me has a solid shot at the title.

Thanks to Deadline, we have our first look at Crowe and Foundation star Daniel MacPherson in Beast in Me, along with the rest of the star-studded line-up. Alongside the pair, the movie also stars Luke Hemsworth, Mojean Aria, Kelly Gale,...

Image
“Can one stone change the course of history?” So asks the first trailer for “House of David,” the new biblical drama series from Wonder Project creative leaders Jon Erwin (“Jesus Revolution”) and Jon Gunn (“Ordinary Angels”).

The David and Goliath tale gets a new epic retelling in the trailer for Prime Video’s House of David
Image
It’s perhaps the greatest underdog story next to Rocky. Heck, it’s used as a phrase to describe a match-up that seems so unevenly matched. The David and Goliath tale is one of the most popular stories in the Bible. It tells of a normal man who went up against the fiercest warrior in the land in the biggest size difference imaginable. Amazon’s House of David is a series that will retell the story in eight epic episodes. Three episodes will premiere on February 27, with one episode weekly thereafter. The trailer has just been released.

George Lucas: “The son feeling that the father has got a bigger d*ck” on the Darkest Motif of ‘Star Wars’ That Left Him Concerned
Image
George Lucas launched the Star Wars franchise with the 1977 space opera film that was later expanded into a trilogy of movies. The franchise’s second installment The Empire Strikes Back remains beloved because of its comparatively darker themes and subject material. It leaves its characters with devastating losses and delivers a twist that changes the trajectory of Luke Skywalker’s arc.

The Empire Strikes Back features a dark Star Wars motif (Credit: Lucasfilm).

During an interview, Lucas discussed the film’s darker themes, particularly one motif connected to Luke’s character. While the filmmaker was worried the motif would be too dark, he still went ahead with it. Here is the symbolism Lucas intended with the scene where Luke loses his arm and why the iconic Star Wars moment was a cause of concern.

10 Most Controversial Saturday Night Live Skits & Moments Of All Time
Image
Saturday Night Live is one of the longest-running television shows of all time, but it has caused quite a bit of controversy throughout its 50 years on screen. 2025 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the popular comedy show, and there are multiple specials about Saturday Night Live's anniversary coming out in January and February of this year. One of them, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, was just released and touches upon some of the most iconic and oddest moments from the show.

SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night was primarily focused on celebrating the history and achievements of the show rather than on identifying the controversies and scandals that have taken place over the show's several decades, though. The docuseries did explore the "weird year" of Saturday Night Live (referring to season 11 of the show), but SNL has received much more significant backlash for some of its decisions than it did for that unpopular season.

Mel Gibson Says He Turned Down Martin Scorsese’s The Jesus Role In ‘Last Temptation Of Christ’
Image
We all know that Mel Gibson is a deeply religious man, among other perhaps less savory things. His “The Passion of the Christ” is still one of the biggest R-rated films of all time. And he’s apparently preparing to begin work on “The Resurrection of Christ” sometime next year. But there was one religious film that he was offered and turned down, even though it was going to be directed by one of the best filmmakers around.

Spanish producers Batiak Films and Elora Posthouse have boarded Maria Paz Barragán’s immigration horror feature “Tenants” as co-producers. The Madrid-set feature will be pitched at this year’s Ventana Sur Proyecta sidebar by its Peruvian lead producer, Final Abierto.

An example of Latin America’s maturing and constantly diversifying genre scene and the region’s increasingly strong industry ties to Spain, “Tenants” tells the 2003-set story of Edwin and Maria, two immigrants from Lima, Peru, who relocated to Madrid in search of a better life. With minimal resources, they move into the only house they can afford, only to discover that it is inhabited by racist spirits who want to subjugate the couple.

Timothee Chalamet was 'relentless' in making Bob Dylan biopic, says Edward Norton
Edward Norton has revealed Timothee Chalamet was "relentless" in his approach to play Bob Dylan in 'A Complete Unknown'.The 55-year-old actor appears opposite the 'Dune' star, 28, in the upcoming biopic as folk singer Peter Seeger, and has now shared that Chalamet – who portrays Dylan – took playing the music icon very seriously, and shut off as many distractions as possible to fully immerse himself in the role.Norton told Rolling Stone magazine: "He was relentless. No visitors, no friends, no reps, no nothing. [Chalamet said] 'Nobody comes around us while we’re doing this.' "We’re trying to do the best we can with something that’s so totemic and sacrosanct to many people. And I agreed totally — it was like, 'We cannot have a f****** audience for this.' "We’ve got to believe to the greatest degree we can. And he was right to be that protective.

Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Complete Unknown’ Co-Stars Praise Actor’s Singing, Recall His Method Process of Becoming Bob Dylan
Image
Taking on the role of Bob Dylan for James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet sang Dylan’s songs so well that people on set debated whether he was lip-syncing or not. He also used a method approach to staying immersed in his role.

In Chalamet’s Rolling Stone cover story published Monday, the actor’s co-star Elle Fanning recalled hearing Chalamet sing as Dylan while filming.

“We were in an auditorium, and I was sitting amongst all these background artists. Jim would let Timmy come out and give the crowd a whole concert. He was singing ‘Masters of War’ and ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,’ and I was like, ‘Jesus.’ All of us were kind of shaking, because it was so surreal hearing someone do that. So perfectly done, but it wasn’t a caricature. It was still Timmy, but it’s Bob, and this kind of beautiful meld.

"Everything's hard now," she stated. "Actually everything. I mean, maybe not Deadpool, but theres nothing thats, 'Oh my gosh. Yep. This is it. Greenlight, lets go.' Benjamin Booker Is Looking for a Good Life. He Might Have Found It
Image
Benjamin Booker’s years in Los Angeles, at the tail end of the 2010s, were filled with exploration and experimentation. The singer-songwriter lived for a while in Echo Park, but spent a lot of his time downtown. He’d grab his skateboard, coast down Glendale Boulevard, and spend the day taking pictures, visiting museums, or hanging out (he eventually just moved downtown).

There was a Kerry James Marshall retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2017 that he found “eye-opening” and “life-changing.” “Everything is done with purpose,” Booker recalls thinking.

Deadpool & Wolverine Dethroned on Streaming Chart by Another Blockbuster Sequel
Image
This summers blockbuster hit Deadpool & Wolverine has been overtaken as the No. 1 most popular rental on Amazon by another box office hit, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, per Forbes. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, starring Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, landed on the No. 1 spot on Prime Videos Top 10 List, relegating the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led Deadpool & Wolverine to the No. 2 spot on the list.

The fact that Halloween is so close may have something to do with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice dethroning "Marvel Jesus, perhaps because the sequel offers a more family-friendly, yet spooky alternative to the R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine. The original 1988 Beetlejuice is also on Amazons Top 10 at No. 7.

Some wondered if Scorsese would retire after a biopic on singer Frank Sinatra and a film about Jesus were postponed. The Sinatra movie has been in development for 15 years. It may star Leonardo DiCaprio as Sinatra and Jennifer Lawrence as Ava Gardner. Securing rights from Sinatra’s estate has caused challenges.

As for the Jesus film, Scorsese said “I am working on it.” He wants to bring a unique perspective inspired by his Catholic upbringing in New York. At a February event,...
