David Suzuki Feature Biopic in the Works, Montreal’s Possibles Média Introducing Project in Toronto (Exclusive)
Image
Canadian scientist, media star, and internationally decorated environmental activist David Suzuki will be the subject of a feature biopic produced by Montreal’s Possibles Média, Variety has learned.

Possibles Média’s Serge Noël, co-producer of Venice 2025’s International Critics Week opener “Stereo Girls,” is producing the Suzuki film. Screenwriter Maria Camila Arias, co-scribe of 2022 San Sebastián best picture Golden Shell winner “The Kings of the World,” is penning the screenplay. Both are in Toronto introducing the project to potential collaborators and partners in town for the Toronto Film Festival.

Telefilm Canada and Quebec’s Sodec are supporting development, including the screenplay.

Christian Simoneau (“Villeneuve Pironi”), and Hugo Alarie-Blondin and Stéphane Laporte (“Céline: Through the Eyes of the World”) are serving as executive producers of “Among the Uprising Trees,” a working title.

Suzuki was the subject of 2010 Nfb documentary “Force of Nature” by Canadian filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson, which won the People...

State of the Festival: Camden Online and in the Pines
Image
It’s been more than four years since I started regularly attending the Camden International Film Festival in coastal Maine (not far from the greater Portland area where I grew up), but I’ll never forget the first film I saw: Laura Viezzoli’s La natura delle cose. I arrived in Camden a little late on a Friday afternoon, rushed to get my press badge and, a bit frazzled, scurried on into the quaint, majestic Camden Opera House just in time to glimpse La natura’s opening scene. Viezzoli’s warm paean to love and individual spirituality stuck with me long after the festival was over and was selected by that year’s jury to win the festival’s Cinematic Vision Award. I never again heard a peep about it in the greater film world and I don’t remember it playing at all in New York. Viezzoli has yet to make another feature.

With the season coming to a close on CBC darling, Murdoch Mysteries, and new hitting recently that Cracked and Arctic Air will not be returning, CBC has announced several renewals, and a few new shows.

Murdoch Mysteries and Dragon’s Den are the clear no-brainers of the situation, but we’ve got a full list, plus some pretty hot new efforts.

Schitt’s Creek will be coming your way, a show co-created by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who star with Catherine O’Hara, and that ought to be all you need to know about this one. Reportedly a very dark show, it takes place in western frontier town and follows the women who find themselves stranded when all the men suddenly disappear.

Gerry Dee in Mr. D (2012)
Denette Wilford: CBC Brings Out the Big Guns This Winter
Gerry Dee in Mr. D (2012)
Can you believe it's almost winter? One of the telltale signs -- aside from the Christmas lights, holiday music and bitter, brutal cold -- is when networks begin to promote their midseason shows. That's what CBC did Tuesday at a special event on the set of "George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight." And so it begins...

Unlike the spectacle we saw at the public broadcaster's fall upfronts, the presentation for the midseason schedule was much more subdued, but that doesn't mean it was any less extravagant. The media milled around with the talent, and it was a little unnerving sitting behind Rick Mercer, new "Best Recipes Ever" host Christine Tizzard, beside the cast of "Mr. D," and across from David Sutcliffe (Rory's dad! Oh, and the star of the upcoming "Cracked") and Murdoch himself, Yannick Bisson. But that's CBC's charm, showcasing the best and brightest stars while making content key.

"I think it's...

E1 picks up Canadian David Suzuki biopic
Toronto -- Canadian distributor Entertainment One (E1) has acquired the local rights to Sturla Gunnarson's "Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie" from the National Film Board of Canada and E1's production arm.

The documentary about the iconic Canadian biologist and broadcaster David Suzuki is set to bow at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival ahead of platform theatrical release starting Oct. 1.

The biopic features Suzuki recalling his early internment along with his family in a Second World War Canadian internment camp, and growing up in rural Ontario before becoming a broadcaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in 1970 and eventually an environmental activist.

Suzuki in 1979 began hosting the CBC nature series "The Nature of Things," which still runs on the CBC and airs in 50 markets worldwide.

William Shatner
William Shatner to host 'Making a Scene'
William Shatner
Toronto – Just as William Shatner returns to TV with the new CBS sitcom "$#*! My Dad Says," the Montreal-born actor is headed to Canada to salute local films for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC).

Shatner will host "Making A Scene," a retrospective on award-winning Canuck films, on Thursday, Sept. 23, the same night his upcoming CBS comedy drawn from a Twitter feed will air locally, courtesy domestic broadcaster CTV.

News of Shatner's Canadian gig came Thursday as the CBC unveiled a fall 2010 schedule in Toronto that plays its safe with returning shows and familiar faces.

Another Canadian, Alex Trebek, whose career was launched by the CBC, will return to host "Jeopardy!" weeknights at 7:30 after "Wheel of Fortune" at 7, and help usher in the public broadcaster's primetime schedule this fall.

With Canadian viewers mostly shunning rookie series until they perform in their second seasons, the CBC has chosen to rely on old favorites to bring viewers set-side.
