‘Match Game’ Returns To ABC With Martin Short As Host
Image
Match Game is back, once again, this time with Martin Short as host.

ABC is bringing the evergreen gameshow back for a new season, four years after it last aired on the Disney-owned network.

Alec Baldwin hosted the last reboot of the show, which launched in 1962 and has aired on CBS, NBC and ABC as well as on syndication. That most recent version of the show ran for five seasons, starting in 2016 with the final batch of episodes airing in summer of 2021.

The series features four contestants each week vying for the chance to win $25,000, as they attempt to match the answers of six celebrities in a game of fill-in-the-blank.

It is produced by FremantleMedia North America with Short and Alycia Rossiter, who has exec produced series including ABC’s Generation Gap and Supermarket Sweep, serving as executive producers.

Start your carts and smash that like button: The Sidemen revived ‘Supermarket Sweep’ on YouTube
Image
A company that owns the rights to dozens of classic game show formats is turning to digital influencers to launch revivals. FremantleMedia‘s production arm Talkback Thames recently put together a reboot of Supermarket Sweep hosted by the Sidemen, and the video’s success may lead to future YouTube spinoffs.

The Sidemen uploaded their version of Supermarket Sweep on their group YouTube channel, which reaches more than 22 million subscribers. The U.K. creator septet worked with Talkback Thames to incorporate official Supermarket Sweep assets into their version of the show, but the Sidemen also put an edgy twist on the proceedings.

If the resulting video aired alongside Supermarket Sweep reruns on daytime TV, it might not be appropriate, but on YouTube, it was a hit. It has pulled in more than 5.5 million views to date and received rave reviews from Sidemen fans.

According to The Times, Talkback Thames is exploring...

‘Hollywood Squares’ Fans Slam Reboot As ‘Epic Fail’
Image
Hollywood Squares fans are slamming the game show reboot as an “epic fail.” The show premiered on Thursday, January 16th, a week later than anticipated. Unfortunately, those who had high expectations for the revival were less than thrilled with the outcome. Keep reading for more details on what they had to say.

Hollywood Squares Reboot Slammed As ‘Epic Fail’

Rebooted game shows can be hit or miss. Some do not even get a reboot but rather the torch gets passed. Such was the case with Drew Carey on The Price is Right who took over when Bob Barker retired. Let’s Make a Deal has been in the same boat and faced revival status but viewers have appreciated what Wayne Brady has brought to the table. Then, there are true rebooted game shows such as Press Your Luck. It was a hit in the eighties but Elizabeth Banks brought it...

Catching on Fast: Why Europe Is Embracing Free Advertising-Supported Streaming TV
Image
Is Europe going Fast, but the U.S. going FASTer? Fast, or free advertising-supported streaming television, and AVOD (advertising-based video on demand) services have been a key growth segment in the U.S. at a time when streaming has become a competitive amid a maturing market. Cases in point: Fox Corp.’s Tubi, Paramount Global’s Pluto TV, Amazon’s Freevee, or The Roku Channel.

Meanwhile, in Europe, where traditionally more free TV content has been available, Fast hasn’t made as much noise until recently. And MIPCOM in Cannes could in the coming days feature more talk and news about it. This summer, Tubi launched in the U.K., while Pluto TV struck a strategic commercial and editorial partnership with M6+, French TV company Groupe M6’s new AVOD platform, to “scale and expand their free streaming and digital businesses in France.” Sony Pictures recently launched a 54-channel Fast...

10 Most Iconic Nickelodeon Game Shows, Ranked
Image
Game shows are the foundation of hopes, fond memories, and major messes; at least they are on the iconic Nickelodeon network. While Nickelodeon is often celebrated for its cartoons, live-action sitcoms, and sketch comedies, its channels also turned children's game shows into an art form. From the late '80s through the modern era, these shows helped shape the television landscape. Looking back at Nickelodeons most unique, memorable, and gloriously sloppy game shows paints a vivid, neon-colored picture of how it became one of the most nostalgic icons in pop culture today.

Founded in 1977 and originally called Pinwheel, Nickelodeon proudly billed itself as "the first cable channel for children." With shows like You Can't Do That on Television, All That, and the now iconic SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon consistently found innovative ways to entertain young audiences. However, everything changed in 1986 with the production of one of its first dedicated game shows,...

25 best TV game shows of all time, ranked
Image
It seems as though the past few years have brought a resurgence of game shows, which were once a staple of both daytime and primetime television viewing. As a kid, I relished snow days and sick days when I could miss school and curl up on the sofa to watch all my favorites – “Pyramid,” “Family Feud” and “Password” were just a few. Every day after school I rushed through my homework so that I’d have time to watch “Tattletales” and “Tic Tac Dough.”

Game shows go all the way back to the days of radio, with one such program becoming the first game show to air on broadcast television – “Truth or Consequences” debuted on July 1, 1941, and before long the genre became a popular form of entertainment. All “Big Three” networks carried a variety of game shows on both daytime and primetime schedules until their popularity began to fizzle in the ’80s and ’90s.

7 Comics Who Parlayed ‘SNL’ Fame Into Game Show Hosting
Image
For the first few decades of Saturday Night Live, breaking out on the show was a ticket to movie stardom for comics like John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers and Will Ferrell. In the 2000s, the path led to Emmy Award-winning comedies for Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg. In recent years, however, the big reward for a long run on SNL seems to be a job as a game show host.

That payoff isn't quite the same as becoming one of the world's biggest movie stars, but here are seven SNL cast members who got to host quiz shows as a consolation prize…

1 Colin Jost: Pop Culture Jeopardy!

Fresh off of maiming himself as an Olympics surfing correspondent, Jost is adding game-show host duties to his SNL responsibilities. The new Prime Video show tells you everything you need to know in its title: it’s Jeopardy! for...

New ‘Celebrity Family Feud’ Exec Producer Myeshia Mizuno Makes History as First Black Woman to Run a Primetime Game Show (Exclusive)
Image
As a child of the 1970s, Myeshia Mizuno still remembers watching the Richard Dawson incarnation of “Family Feud” at home. Now, she’s the new showrunner on the Steve Harvey-hosted daytime version in syndication and the primetime “Celebrity Family Feud” on ABC — which returns July 9 for its 10th anniversary and landmark 100th episode.

And in taking on those roles — which she began earlier this year, Mizuno is also making history. After much research by the folks at series producer Fremantle, they can confirm that Mizuno is indeed the first-ever Black woman to serve as a network game show showrunner.

“I grew up watching game shows, everyone watched game shows,” Mizuno says. “They have traditionally been run by white males. So, to be the first Black woman to run a primetime network game show is huge. And not just any game show, but an iconic franchise at that! I’m very appreciative of it.

Leslie Jones Says ‘SNL’ Made Her a ‘Caricature of Myself’: I’m Either Loving on White Boys, Beating Up White Boys or ‘Doing Something Loud’
Image
Leslie Jones said in a recent NPR interview (via The Daily Beast) that “Saturday Night Live” turned her into a loud caricature of herself, although she was blatantly aware that would happen given the mechanics of the NBC sketch comedy show. Jones was an “SNL” writer and cast member from 2014 to 2019, earning two Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series.

“I’ve been doing comedy so long, it’s like, I know what I am,” Jones said. “At ‘SNL,’ they take that one thing and they wring it. They wring it because that’s the machine. So whatever it is that I’m giving that they’re so happy about, they feel like it’s got to be that all the time, or something like that.”

“So it was, like, a caricature of myself, you know what I’m saying?” Jones continued. “So it was like, now...

Podtalk: Author Shelley Herman Remembers ‘My Peacock Tale’
Image
Chicago – When a smart and ambitious California girl moves from her “one horse town” to early 1970s Los Angeles, what better way to break into the show business than being an NBC-tv Studio Page for “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and other programs of the era. Author Shelley Herman tells “My Peacock Tale.”

Ms. Herman recalls the almost impossible-to-imagine situations behind the scenes amidst a “who’s who” of 1970s entertainment culture. From a trip to see Elvis in Las Vegas that led to Shelley getting into the NBC-tv Page program to literally “breaking a leg” in an encounter that brought her an indelible moment with a musical hero, she also had an insider’s perspective on the historic feud between Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson (when Rivers left her “Tonight Show” gig for her own talk show). “My Peacock Tale” tells all in the interpersonal, professional, and emotional...

Which Game Shows Could Break Into New Primetime Emmys Category?
Image
It’s all fun and games until the Emmys start handing out awards. Then the real competition begins.

This year, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards will present its first statue for outstanding game show. Previously, game shows were honored during the Daytime Emmys, where “Jeopardy” has claimed 11 of the last 20 years of awards.

But in 2021, the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which handles the Daytime Emmys, and the L.A.-based Television Academy, which handles the Primetime Emmys, decided to bring game shows into the primetime heat.

It’s not a shock considering a slew of rebooted classic games and wild new competitions have led to a resurgence in the genre. Coupled with the seemingly endless search for a new “Jeopardy” host that consumed the nation, game shows are all the rage again.

When confirming the category inclusion last August, the TV Academy broadly revealed what it takes to qualify,...

Emily Marshall, ‘Tonight Show’ Secretary Turned Sitcom Writer, Dies at 79
Image
Emily Marshall, who parlayed a gig as a secretary for producer Fred de Cordova on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show into a two-decade career as a sitcom writer on Newhart, Rhoda, Wkrp in Cincinnati and Designing Women, has died. She was 79.

Marshall died March 17 of lung cancer at her home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, her friend and mentor, Emmy-nominated writer-producer Barry Kemp, said. She served as a staff writer on Newhart, which he created, from 1982-84.

Marshall was the third wife of Doc Severinsen. She married the colorful Tonight Show bandleader and trumpet player in 1980 and was with him for nearly 40 years through 2013.

Marshall also created the 1988-89 CBS sitcom Coming of Age, which starred Paul Dooley, Phyllis Newman, Alan Young, Glynis Johns, Kevin Pollak and Ruta Lee. The comedy, set in an Arizona retirement community, opened with Severinsen performing the boisterous big band number “Sing, Sing,...

Amy Poehler’s ‘Making It’, Kristen Bell’s ‘Family Game Fight!’ & ‘AGT: Extreme’ Parked Indefinitely As NBC Unveils Schedule
Image
The future of high-profile unscripted NBC series including Amy Poehler’s Making It and Kristen Bell’s Family Game Fight! is up in the air as the network has indefinitely parked them.

Making It, Family Game Fight and AGT: Extreme did not make it into NBC’s schedule and it seems that they are the latest non-scripted series to neither be canceled or renewed – in a growing trend as highlighted by Fox earlier this morning as well as ABC with series such as Supermarket Sweep and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

It comes as the network has revealed that two of its other big unscripted series The Wheel and Million Dollar Island will launch in midseason.

Making It, which is co-hosted by Parks and Recreation stars Poehler and Nick Offerman, has run for three seasons on the network. The craft competition premiered in July 2018, its second season debuted in...

‘The Masked Dancer’, ‘Alter Ego’, ‘Game Of Talents’ & ‘Mental Samurai’ In Limbo; No Sign Of Non-Scripted Series On Fox Slate
Image
Fox put a number of its non-scripted competition series including Next Level Chef and a new Gordon Ramsay series front and center of its 2022/23 slate.

The return of Next Level Chef is premiering after the Super Bowl in February and celebrity chef Ramsay is bringing his BBC format Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars to the U.S. Lego Masters is also moving from its summer spot and is getting a celebrity spinoff and The Masked Singer is returning for an eighth season and Joel McHale-fronted Crime Scene Kitchen is also coming back.

However, there are a number of Fox reality competition series that are in limbo with no sign of them being on the schedule, but equally have not yet been officially canceled.

There is no sign of The Masked Singer spinoff The Masked Dancer, which aired between December 2020 and February 2021, Wayne Brady-hosted Game of Talents, which premiered...

‘America’s Funniest Home Videos’, ‘Celebrity Wheel Of Fortune’ & ‘Shark Tank’ Renewed At ABC

America’s Funniest Home Videos, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Shark Tank are all returning as ABC stocks up its unscripted lineup.

The trio of shows join another season of American Idol and The Bachelor on the nonscripted slate.

Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season

Missing from the list is Supermarket Sweep, which Deadline understands hasn’t been canceled but it’s not clear whether it will come back for a third season. Earlier this summer, the network canceled unscripted series including Match Game, Celebrity Dating Game, The Hustler and When Nature Calls.

America’s Funniest Home Videos returns for its 33rd season. Alfonso Ribeiro returns as host on the Vin Di Bona Productions-produced series, which is the longest-running primetime entertainment show in the history of ABC.

Broadcast Rankings: The Highest and Lowest-Rated Unscripted Shows of the 2021-2022 Season
Image
Comedies and dramas traditionally make up a large portion of the broadcast TV landscape between September and May, but networks don’t deny the continuous draw of hit reality TV and competition shows. Each season, ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox, the so-called “Big 4” broadcasters, bring back old staples and add in new unscripted content in hopes of topping each other outside of their sitcoms and procedurals.

While there could always be slight adjustments to season-long averages by the end of the traditional broadcast season in a few weeks, Variety has gathered Nielsen’s “most current” data through May 8 to rank ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox’s highest and lowest-rated unscripted series among adults 18-49.

Below are the lists, which count 33 completed weeks of the soon-ending season. These ratings are averages for the unscripted shows’ respective seasons and based on a week’s worth of delayed viewing, where available. The lists...
