John Ryder may have wanted Jim to stop him, but you’re going to have a hard time stopping any fan from picking up the upcoming 4K Blu-ray of The Hitcher. Surprisingly, the movie has never been available on a Region 1 Blu-ray, but thankfully Warner Bros. is gassing up for exactly that.
As per The Digital Bits, Warner Bros. will release The Hitcher – which stars Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell and Jennifer Jason Leigh – on October 22nd.
Here is the official write-up: “In this 1986 cult classic, director Robert Harmon thrills the viewer with the story of young Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell), who stops on the highway to pick up a hitchhiker, not knowing that by doing so, he opens the door to terrible evil. The mysterious hitcher, unforgettably portrayed by Rutger Hauer, is a relentless slaughterer, preying on those who invite him into their lives. McCarthy and Owen play JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey, respectively, in the limited series, which explores the tragic unsolved murder of the 6-year-old beauty queen.
Following the Ramsey family, before and after the tragedy as they go through the painful loss of a child while facing intense public scrutiny caused by a media frenzy that captivated an entire nation, the series will explore “the unbreakable partnership of these two complex people – as husband and wife, as mother and father – who had committed themselves and their children to building the narrative of a perfect, privileged life only to have it destroyed one Christmas night in 1996,” per the official logline.

2024 has been another amazing year for horror. The genre has been scared by a great mix of franchise terrors and haunting original nightmares. The latter was led by Shudder. The horror-centric streaming service has released a few box office hits this year, including Late Night With the Devil. The David Dastmalchian starring found-footage film left its mark on the horror community this past spring. Now, the critically-acclaimed film is getting a scream-worthy box set from Second Sight.

Starfleet Remembrance Day honors fallen crew members annually, but Battle of Wolf 359 is not publicly commemorated. Captain Jean-Luc Picard's tactical knowledge aided the Borg, leading to devastating losses at Wolf 359. Starfleet may not commemorate Wolf 359 due to Gene Roddenberry's views on grief, but Starfleet Memorial Day could be a time for reflection.
For such a monumental tragedy, it's not known how the Battle of Wolf 359 is memorialized in the Star Trek: The Next Generation era. The devastating conflict between the Federation and the Borg Collective was one of the most destructive battles in Starfleet history. Nearly 11,000 people lost their lives during the Battle of Wolf 359, including Jennifer Sisko (Felecia M. Bell), the first wife of DS9's Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). However, with such monumental losses, it's unclear if this devastating moment in the Star Trek timeline is commemorated in the years that followed.

Star Trek: DS9 creatively reimagined Wrath of Khan with a romantic twist, showcasing themes of sacrifice and love in a unique way. The episode "Second Sight" gives Commander Sisko a new romance and a heroic sacrifice, drawing parallels with Wrath of Khan's impact. DS9 writers cleverly tied in themes of sacrifice and love from Wrath of Khan without simply copying the iconic film's plot.
One episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2 effectively remade Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan as a romantic tragedy. DS9 has a reputation of being one of the darkest Star Trek shows given how it tackled moral gray areas, and depicted the Federation at war with the Dominion. So retooling the incredibly dark Wrath of Khan for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's characters feels like an obvious move. However, what always made DS9 so brilliant was that the show's writers never went...

Director John McPhail takes genre mash-up to new heights with this hugely entertaining Scottish horror comedy that plays like Shaun of the Dead meets High School Musical. It’s derived from the 2011 Scottish short Zombie Musical, whose late director Ryan McHenry (also responsible for the Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal meme) co-wrote the script before his tragic death in 2015.
Ella Hunt (Robot Overlords) plays Anna, a sixth former at her school in the small town of New Haven, who clashes with her widowed father (Mark Benton) over her desire to spend a year travelling instead of going off to university. Soon, however, Anna realises she has much bigger problems on her hands, as New Haven faces a full-on zombie apocalypse.

When police sergeant Ethan Bishop (Austin) is given the job of holding the fort at a closing La precinct office on New Year’s Eve he hopes the night will go smoothly. When a man turns up in shock, chased by a group of gang members though, it seems things will hardly go smoothly.

"Sherlock" may not return for its fourth season until -- say it ain't so -- 2017, due to the hectic film schedules of in-demand stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. In the meantime, you can rewatch all three seasons and soon you can binge on Cumberbatch in "The Imitation Game" and Freeman in "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies." But what then?
If you're craving more veddy British crime solving, you don't have far to look. Here are some of the best series the BBC (and ITV) has to offer, with private detectives, psychiatrists, cops, spies, and forensic pathologists all cracking cases, catching criminals and drinking lots of tea.
1. "Sherlock Holmes" (1984-1994)
If it's more Sherlock you crave (and not just Mr. Cumberbatch), then you must see Jeremy Brett's intensely intellectual (and equally arrogant) period-appropriate take on the legendary detective. This Watson is also solid, especially in "The House of the Baskervilles.

Jason Lee is returning to network TV in CBS' drama pilot "Second Sight."
The pilot, based on a late-'90s British series of the same name, is about a detective who has a disorder that causes hallucinations and unusually vivid dreams, as well as intermittent vision loss. Clive Owen played the part in the original.

An adaptation of the British crime drama fronted by Clive Owen, Second Sight stars Lee as Tanner, the lead detective with the New Orleans Police Department. Tanner, though, is concealing a troublesome secret: He has an ocular disorder that causes him to have horrifying, visually stimulating anxiety dreams and hallucinations.
Assured by his doctor that he will not go blind, Tanner is encouraged to think of the side effects as a “gift,” signposts from his subconscious that – hey! — help him solve crimes.

NBC's forthcoming series "Dracula" is setting up something of a love triangle, and it's just cast the third side.
Irish actress Victoria Smurfit ("About a Boy," "The Beach") will play Lady Jayne in the drama. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays the title character, who's posing as a doctor in 1890s London.
Jayne will feel an instant attraction to Dracula (who's going by the name Alan Grayson), but he's hung up on Mina (Jessica DeGouw), whom he believes is the reincarnation of his late wife.
Other pilot-season news:
- CBS has cast Blake Garrett Rosenthal ("New Girl") as Anna Faris' 8-year-old son in its comedy pilot "Mom," from Chuck Lorre.
- Patty Jenkins ("Monster," "The Killing") has been tapped to direct ABC's drama pilot "Betrayal." It's about a woman who's having an affair with a defense lawyer -- who happens to be trying a case against her husband, who's a prosecutor.

CBS has ordered a drama pilot from "Homeland" executive producer Michael Cuesta. The pilot, "Second Sight," is based on the British series of the same name by Paula Milne. Described as a gothic psychological thriller, the pilot centers on a detective who is suddenly afflicted with an autoimmune virus that causes hallucinations reflective of his subconscious. He discovers that catching the killer depends as much on insight as eyesight. and will follow a homicide detective who is going blind and turns his affliction into an advantage, using his heightened senses and intuition...

CBS has added one more pilot to its drama roster, greenlighting Second Sight, from Michael Cuesta, director/executive producer of the Emmy-winning Homeland and CSI executive producer/showrunner Carol Mendelsohn. Based on the 2000 British series starring Clive Owen, Second Sight is described as a gothic psychological thriller about a detective who is suddenly afflicted with an autoimmune virus that causes hallucinations reflective of his subconscious. He discovers that catching the killer depends as much on insight as eyesight. (watch the trailer for the original series below.) Cuesta wrote the adaptation with his brother Gerald Cuesta. Southern Comfort
Stars: Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward, Franklyn Seales, T.K. Carter, Lewis Smith, Peter Coyote, Alan Autry, Brion James, Sonny Landham | Written by Michael Kane, Walter Hill, David Giler | Directed by Walter Hill
There is something about Walter Hill’s style of storytelling that just gets me. I’m a big fan of The Warriors, even though it took me long enough to finally see the film. Once I finally got to see it though it turned into one of my favourite films. Southern Comfort is a film very much like The Warriors, written and directed by Hill it very much mirrors the style with a group of men out of their element and fighting for survival, though the city and the bayou are two very different “jungles”.

Magic Mike
It'd be a foolish bet to put money on where Steven Soderbergh's career is going next. Soderbergh's "problem" is that he seems to be good: Magic Mike, a tale of male strippers, comes after a star-studded disease thriller (Contagion) and a female-fronted action movie (Haywire). His next is, obviously, a TV movie about Liberace (seriously, it is).
Magic Mike also rounds off a critically and financially successful year for Channing Tatum, after the ultra-manipualtive tear-fest The Vow and the excellent comedy 21 Jump Street. This movie is loosely based on Tatum's time in dance revue shows in Tampa, so the routines are authentic; but it's not quite Hen Night: The Movie, although it could serve as such.
It's closer to The Wrestler than it is to Showgirls, although thankfully not anywhere near as grim as either. Soderbergh takes...

Return of the Living Dead, the Basket Case Trilogy… Second Sight now continue their current (and fantastic) trend of re-releasing 80s classics on Blu-ray with two family favourites – Short Circuit and Flight of the Navigator – that are, in my humble opinion, essential purchases for 80s movie fans. Even if you already own the DVDs!
Short Circuit
Stars: Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenburg, Fisher Stevens, G.W. Bailey | Written by S.S. Wilson, Brent Maddock | Directed by John Badham
An experimental military robot escapes after being struck by lightening, giving it human intelligence. He escapes and finds a home with madcap Stephanie Speck (Sheedy), who believes he is an alien, but hot on his trail are scientists Newton Crosby (Guttenburg) and his assistant (Stevens), who must get to their creation before the army, who plan to put Number 5 out of service permanently.

Ted | A Simple Life | The Thick Of It: Series 4 | Flight Of The Navigator/Short Circuit | Margin Call
Ted
Currently nudging the $500m mark at the box office, Ted is looking like being the biggest comedy of 2012. Like all good comedies the idea is simplicity itself: a talking teddy bear that says and does things that would be shocking said by a real person, let alone a child's toy. It takes this one joke and runs with it until it stops being funny, then continues to run with it until it becomes hilarious again.
Directed, co-produced and co-written by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, who also voices Ted in his best Peter Griffin style, the movie follows what happens after a childhood wish comes true. Everyone gets used to the magic of having a talking toy bear in the world pretty quickly, and Ted and his owner (played by Mark Wahlberg...

Basket Case Trilogy
Stars: Kevin VanHentenryck, Terri Susan Smith, Beverly Bonner, Annie Ross, Judy Grafe, Gil Roper | Written and Directed by Frank Henenlotter
Still somewhat of an underground series in mainstream movie-going consciousness (despite what seems like a huge horror-loving fanbase), the Basket Case trilogy finally makes its way to Blu-ray after a shoddy treatment on DVD where here in the UK they have often been resigned to the bargain bins. Thankfully Second Sight have decided to give the franchise its proper due with a trilogy release that will definitely please fans of the films and will hopefully also make a lot of new ones…
Released on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray steelbook (a must-buy for me), the Basket Case Trilogy features the adventures of two brothers, Duane and Belial, well I say brothers but they were originally conjoined twins, separated against their will; with Duane seemingly “normal” and Belial resigned to a life of deformity,...

Free Radical Design co-founder Steve Ellis revealed in a new interview that the developer was working on an HD version of TimeSplitters 2 before Crytek acquired the company in 2009.
NotEnoughShaders asked the legendary developer if he would like to see high-definition versions of the TimeSplitters games and Second Sight released through Xbla, Psn, or Nintendo’s eShop. Ellis, who is currently the Managing Director at the mobile developer Crash Lab, responded:
“We had a “HD” downloadable version of TimeSplitters 2 in development at Free Radical in 2008. I don’t know what happened to that but yes, I’d love to see it released at some point. Maybe it could be the catalyst that is required in order to raise enough interest in TimeSplitters 4 that a publisher might want to fund it.”

It seems UK distributor Second Sight are on a 80′s horror roll these days. First came their fan-favourite steelbook release of Return of the Living Dead, next up is the three-film steelbook release of the Basket Case trilogy (a review of which is coming soon) and their release of Walter Hill’s Southern Comfort in November. But those titles are not the only eagerly awaited 80′s horror films they have on their books – oh no – the company also has the Stuart Gordon/Brian Yuzna trio of Re-Animator, Bride of Re-Animator and From Beyond; as well as Yuzna’s Society in the pipeline…
And Second Sight have just unveiled (via their Facebook page) the official Graham Humphreys designed DVD and Blu-ray artwork for the latter two films – From Beyond and Society – both of which are suitably awesome! Check them out below:...

(Marcel Carné, 1945, Second Sight, PG)
This vibrant three-hour epic was made during the German occupation by director Marcel Carné, poet Jacques Prévert and designer Alexandre Trauner, the chief creators of the so-called poetic realism that dominated French cinema in the late 1930s. The film then enjoyed a triumphant reception at its premiere in March 1945, just two months before Ve Day, when it helped assert the indomitable spirit of French culture and restore national pride.
The Nazi regime forbade direct reference to the war or any currently controversial matter, so the setting is the Parisian theatre of the 1830s, which is given a Balzacian social scope and dramatic vigour. Pierre Brasseur and Jean-Louis Barrault play rival actors, one a Shakespearean star, the other a brilliant mime, both of them in love with the cool, graceful Arletty's much-sought-after courtesan, who's also admired by a charismatic criminal and an aristocrat.

★★★☆☆ This week's Second Sight rerelease of Carol Reed's high flying epic Trapeze (1956) is a welcome reminder of the domineering screen presence of Burt Lancaster and the Technicolor epics that dominated the box office throughout the 1950s. Destined to be confused and compared with Cecil B. DeMille's The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), Trapeze is arguably the superior picture, with Reed using the circus as a backdrop to a simple love triangle.

License To Drive
Stars: Corey Haim, Heather Graham, Corey Feldman, Carol Kane, Richard Masur | Written by Neil Tolkin | Directed by Greg Beeman
Apparently an ’80s classic that had somehow slipped under my radar, 1988′s License to Drive ticks all the necessary boxes for a teen comedy winner: Ludicrous hair? Check. Overly lusty teenage boys? Check. Zany parents with more comedy chops than the leads? Stuck-up sibling? Actor with a minor role who’ll one day be more famous than said leads put together? Check, check and checkers. A Corey? Shit, this film has two!
Like most successful teen films of the decade, License to Drive takes a simple, everyday situation for a 16 year-old kid and balloons its importance to such a ridiculous degree that it warrants an action scene, a car chase or at least a dance sequence. It was skipping school in Ferris Bueller and detention in The Breakfast Club,...
