‘The Agency’ Executive Producer Pascal Breton on Creating a New Generation of Tastemakers at Federation Studios, Plans to Accelerate Growth and English-Language Output
Image
Known for his creative flair and business acumen as much as for his talent for throwing the best parties, French entrepreneur and producer Pascal Breton is celebrating a milestone in the 11-year history of his Paris-based Federation Studios. That is the launch of “The Agency,” the anticipated U.S. remake of “Le Bureau des Legendes” starring Michael Fassbender, which Federation executive produced alongside George Clooney and is co-distributing internationally with Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Federation Studios previously sold Eric Rochant’s smash hit spy series “Le Bureau des Legendes” widely, but retained the IP, allowing the outfit to make a lucrative deal with Paramount for the remake and remain in the picture as co-distributor and executive producer.

A disruptor at heart, Breton was vying for a career in academics after getting a PhD in political science with a prophetic thesis about how television has changed the rules of political life.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ Movie Will Make You Sing, Scream, and Sob
Image
The first of many great moments in Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie: Right as the lights went down, the girl in Row H spoke up. “Oh my God, I should have asked permission before now, but we’re all gonna sing, right?” she pleaded in the dark. “Because I wanna sing!” A woman seated a few rows in front replied, “Sing loud and proud, sister.” And that’s all the discussion anyone needed about that. Because this was opening night of the Eras concert film, and nothing could have...

French Media Scrambles Following Brigitte Bardot Health Scare; Actress Recently Posted On Grief At Jane Birkin’s Death
Image
Emergency services were called to Brigitte Bardot’s Saint Tropez home on Wednesday after the iconic French actress and animal rights activist suffered breathing difficulties, according to French media reports.

News of her malaise sent French media outlets into overdrive amid fears for the well-being of the 88-year-old actress.

Her husband Bernard d’Ormale was later reported to have told local newspaper Var Martin that his wife’s breathing was back under control and she was feeling better.

“It was around 9 o’clock when Brigitte had trouble breathing. It was stronger that usual but she didn’t lose consciousness… the fireman came and gave her oxygen and then stayed to monitor her,” he said.

He suggested high temperatures in Saint Tropez as Southern Europe suffers a prolonged heatwave had been a contributing factor.

“Like all people of a certain age, she can no longer stand the heat,” he said.

Bardot remains...

Brigitte Bardot Biopic Series Sparks Buzz at Series Mania, Sails to Major Markets (Exclusive)
Image
While she retired prematurely at the age of 39, Brigitte Bardot has left an indelible mark on France’s popular culture in the 1960s and 1970s. With her wild blonde mane, smoky eyes and pouty lips, Bardot became a symbol of a modern, effortlessly sexy French woman and a style emblem that continues to inspire current trends.

The event series “Bardot,” which is penned and directed by Daniele Thompson (“The Queen Margot”) and Christopher Thompson (“La bûche”), world premiered at Series Mania Festival to unanimous praise and has been pre-sold by Federation nearly worldwide.

“‘Bardot’ is like the French ‘The Crown’ because Bardot embodied France, and through her journey we reminisce about many parts of France’s history and popular culture in the 1950s and 1960s,” Federation’s boss and “Bardot” producer Pascal Breton told Variety. “That era is a historical moment where everything changes, where we go from black and white to color,...

Director discusses new crime-drama starring Daniel Auteuil, his passion for true stories and future projects

French director Vincent Garenq’s new film Kalinka, starring Daniel Auteuil as real-life French accountant André Bamberski who spent 30-years battling to put the German doctor who raped and killed his teenage daughter behind bars, was one of the buzz titles of this year’s Unifrance Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris over the weekend (Jan 14-18).

The film is based on Bamberski’s autobiographical Pour Que Justice Te Soit Rendue (So That You See Justice Done) detailing his fight for justice which began in July 1982 after his teenage daughter Kalinka was found dead in bed while on holiday with her mother Danielle and her second husband, a German doctor called Dieter Krombach.

A detail in the post-mortem that there were signs of injury to the girl’s genitals convinced Bamberski that his daughter had been raped before her death and that...

Netflix unveils first French original drama Marseille
Netflix taps into local cinema talent for political drama set against backdrop of France’s third largest city.

Netflix has greenlit its first French original series, a political drama set entitled Marseille, set against the backdrop of the southern French port city due to hit screens at the end of 2015.

The eight-part series, described as “a tale of power, corruption and redemption”, revolves around a city election between the long-time mayor Robert Taro and a younger ambitious candidate.

Netflix’s announcement comes on the eve of its highly anticipated arrival in France – a move that prompted alarm in some parts of the local film and TV industry because it is expected to put pressure on the country’s highly regulated release windows and audiovisual financing system.

“Marseille is an ambitious, diabolically smart, fictitious exploration of local politics in one of the world’s most vibrant and fascinating cities.” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

“We are delighted...

Rufus Wainwright
Johnny Depp And Vanessa Paradis Sing A Song Together
Rufus Wainwright
Off the beaten path, this year has been all about the Gainsbourgs, with a film and album for father Serge and a film and album for daughter Charlotte. Said album for Serge is a tribute called From Gainsbourg To Lulu, put together by none other than son Lulu. The album boasts a number of big names, featuring covers by Scarlett Johansson, Rufus Wainwright, Iggy Pop, and why we're here today -- a duet by husband and wife Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis.

Depp (not a singer) and Paradis (actually a singer) sound super French on their rendition of "Ballade De Melodie Nelson." Paradis carries the weight while Depp chimes in occasionally to say "Melodie Nelson" in a breathy voice, which makes him sound either like a psycho killer or French lover, we're not sure.
