The film was first announced in 1996, but filming only began in September 1998 in Porto, Portugal, lasting until 1999.
All the actors in the film are Brazilian, except Joaquim de Almeida and Anthony O'Donnell, who play Sherlock Holmes and John Watson respectively. Joaquim is Portuguese and Anthony is Welsh.
