This show was extremely creative. Always something new and exciting. Great characters that kids got to know and love. I wish there was a way to see this as an adult. To even be able to show it to our kids. Many people still quote Gary Gnu but have forgotten where he came from. Definitely a hidden gem lost to the ages.
I would watch this show every morning before I went to elementary school. Every episode, Roy, Fran, and Danny would sing a song and tell some story about a kid who overcame an obstacle. There were always guest stars. In the early seasons, Roy would always show this cartoon on this little TV about a black and white line man who spoke gibberish. I saw that cartoon again in 1997 in my computer animation class! It was so cool! Knock Knock would always tell a stupid knock knock joke. Baxter the clown would also sing songs. Gary Gnu was no funny. No gnews is good gnews with Gary Gnu. I remember Gary Gnu getting hit with a Gary Gnu turkey every episode. One day of of the guest stars told the crew how mean they were hitting him with that turkey. I was glad when they got rid of Edison the elephant. It was cool when they brought Speed Reader and Rocking with Rory the third season. I was mad when they bought the huggles in the fourth season. They got Gorriddle in trouble one episode! Baxter would listen to anything the huggles said! Then they had a nerve to bring baby huggle in the 5th season!
To say that The Great Space Coaster is the greatest television show of our time would be an understatement. Millions of people everywhere have been touched by its intelligent, witty, heartwarming and profound storylines. The cast contributed some of the best acting ever seen in a modern television production. The lavish costumes and cutting-edge special effects brought us all to a new level of appreciation. This show truly pushed the boundaries of television programming. Our culture is richer for it.
Hi, I just wonder if anyone will actually read this comment. This is because I am talking about A Children's program I used to watch Called the Great Space Coasters That aired from about 1981 to 85 or 86. I just read a web site on it in fact to get some reviews from other people. This show including myself has a 100 percent rating of a good program that kids enjoyed to watch. However This show although as well liked as it was that many of their friends did not remember seeing this show. In fact many who did can vaguely remember all about the program. I wish i had remembered more myself. This show was so well liked by people that some including myself wish they would bring it back on TV again. It was entertaining, Musical , funny and Educational all in one program. I would like to share what some people commented on that site to get a better glimpse of that show of those who remember it or those who have never watched it. if you never have you have missed the Greatest Children's show ever made! There's no Gnus like Good Gnews"Gary Gnu"
I would say the Great Space Coaster never jumped. No g-news is good g-news unless its gary gnu's I never thought this show jumped the shark. It was one of my most favorite shows to watch when I was a kid. I wish it was still on today. Or at least syndicated. speed reader, gary gnu, mean joe green... who can ask for anything more before you had to go to school. not many of my friends remembered it (as i can see from the votes), but it rocked. I guess it would have jumped if it had been on longer than 4 or 5 years.
I shall always remember the Great Space Coaster with fondness.
When all of a sudden (1983 or 84) they added this MTV-like aspect with stupid puppet Rockin with Rory would always show a video of "Danny and the Spacecoasters" and Roy, Fran, and Danny would do some 60's cover.
I barely remember it but for years I've had one line of the theme song stuck in my head and I wish I could see at least one episode so that I could hear the rest song again. I do remember that it was a show that my big sister and I could agree on and stop fighting with each other for a few minutes.
Fantastic Show! I thought I had imagined it as a kid. No one I know ever actually saw it, it was nice to have my sanity verified on this site!!!
Wow! other people who remember this show! I miss this one to this day. It never jumped. (And Mean Joe Greene was the best!!!) Excellent show. Anyone remember, "young doctor Goriddle - tree surgeon." Puppets, a rock band, guest stars, and those awesome insect cartoons at the end that Ray would play from the little TV he pulled from his pocket. They saved the morals and lessons and put them in cartoon form at the end. Brilliant. although i hardly remember much about this show, i know that i loved it and when i think about it i can remember the specific feeling of being 6 and sitting on the bed watching it while supposedly getting ready for school.
"Off we go, step inside, soaring on a magic ride, rolling to the other side, where only rainbows hide...". The music from those insect cartoons will forever be etched in my memory! As much as I loved this show unfortunately it did jump with the introduction of those annoying Huggles. Other than that the show was the bomb! Fran was the queen of my dreams. Many a pre-pubescent fantasies stemmed from my worship of Fran. I'm 28 now and I still wish that Fran would come over and baby-sit me. I'm a sad, lonely person. In a sad note, I read that the actor who played Roy died in 1990. Big Ups to Roy. R.I.P. I think M.T. Promises might be to blame for that. B******! "hey you this is my world too..."
Never! This was the best show. Gary Gnu still is in my brain. I thought I was just some loon that couldn't/wouldn't pronounce gnu correctly 'til I heard the theme song somewhere and it all came back to me. Not too many people I know even remember the show until I mention Gary Gnu. :)

I used to watch The Great Space Coaster when I was 5 years old. It's still the greatest show EVER. I've always wondered what the cast members are doing now that the show is over. It was a wonderful show and very well written. I only hope that there will be channels on in the near future that will start airing shows of this magnitude otherwise they may be lost.
