Shot on late 80's pixelvision technology this film excellently grabs the essence of average teenage life. It is about a girl and her first experiments with love and lust. It shows the viewer a breathtaking different perspective on the all too average love/lust story line, however her love/lust for another girl and her exposure to and acceptance of lesbianism separates it from common narratives. It is not the average coming-out story and gives a playful, innocent, childish take on discovering one's sexual urges. What is especially great about this film is that she seemingly discovers her sexual orientation without being told what it is. In other words, she did not have any prejudices and treated her lesbianism as if it were perfectly normal. She did not repress it at all in her video diary, and in fact embrasses it fully. It detracts further from the average queer film in that it does not have a moral or any political agenda apparent, aside from that of inherent acceptance for all. It's just a film exposé on teenage love. A must see for any person interested in film as the use of style is exceptional, especially when one considers the filmmaker's age and lack of expertise, as well as the technology she was using. Fully endorsed and recommended!
I think perhaps if you are not familiar with queer culture lots of things going on here will escape you. The use of music is particularly good, and the images are fairly rare to this day of a teenage girl exploring gender on her own terms. I personally love this piece it is my favorite of her work. The subject tells the story of meeting a girl like her for the first time, and the interaction that follows, she finds herself in the experience of telling the story , and therefore there is no reason to ask if the story is true or not. It matters either way. This is important work, and beautiful in its own way. There are not many praised images of lesbians at all much less from this age or era.
even as "avant garde" and freethought, this is painfully strange and vulgar to watch.... and difficult to interpret. voyage of a lost, sexually confused soul that lets a STRANGEr take over her life and almost goes to Hollywood and almost to Detroit but gets stuck in nowhere... with more confusion, tangents and emptiness than meaningful expression.
This is a great film, shot with cutting edge techniques and written in a smart and witty style.
Highly recommended for those who are interested in feminist and/or avant garde filmmaking.
