Six Memorable H.P. Lovecraft Cameos in Horror Media
Image
Weird fiction may not be quite as popular as more traditional genres like fantasy or even gothic horror, but you’d be surprised with how much of modern media is inspired or at least influenced by the works of authors like Clark Ashton Smith and even August Derleth. Of course, if one man is responsible for codifying Weird Fiction as we know it today, it has to be the father of the Cthulhu Mythos himself, Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

In the century or so since the author first published his stories about fish cults and elder gods, countless other creators have repurposed his particular brand of cosmic horror for everything from satirical splatter films to even sanity mechanics in gaming (like those in the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG). And with such a vast web of influence, it should come as no surprise that many artists have attempted to pay homage...

Denis Arndt, Tony-Nominated Star of ‘Heisenberg’ and Actor in David E. Kelley Shows, Dies at 86
Image
Denis Arndt, the familiar character actor who appeared on L.A. Law, Picket Fences and other shows for David E. Kelley and earned a Tony nomination for his turn opposite Mary-Louise Parker in the Broadway two-hander Heisenberg, has died. He was 86.

Arndt died Tuesday at his longtime cabin home in Ashland, Oregon, his family announced.

Arndt also portrayed the newlywed husband of Mary Tyler Moore’s character on the 1988 CBS sitcom Annie McGuire — Adrien Brody played his son — and he was one of the cops ogling Sharon Stone’s Catherine Tramell in the iconic interrogation scene in Paul Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct (1992).

Arndt started out with Kelley on NBC’s L.A. Law as lawyer Jack Sollers, who arrives in season five (1990-91) to represent the naughty Rosalind Shays (Diana Muldaur) in her sexual discrimination case against McKenzie Brackman.

He recurred as another lawyer, Franklin Dell, on CBS’ Picket Fences over four...

What Has The Burn Notice Cast Been Up To Since The Show Ended?
Image
To be a proper spy, you tend to need the backing of some sort of organization, governmental or otherwise. Without that, you're just sort of a guy skulking around, and that's not very James Bond, is it? In "Burn Notice," Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) finds out firsthand what it's like to be a spy left out in the cold, when he is "burned" (or discredited) and abandoned by his former employer. Left with an impressive but fairly limited set of skills, he has no choice but to go freelance, taking on assignments within the criminal underworld of Miami.

"Burn Notice" initially ran on the USA Network, and it was popular enough to earn itself a respectable seven seasons from 2007 to 2013, as well four Emmy nominations over the years. After the show went off the air, its talented cast of performers moved on to other things. Now that it's been over...

Image
Soap alum Melina Kanakaredes starred as Eleni Andros Cooper on Guiding Light from 1991 to 1995. Eleni was the sweet but tough Greek goddess who beguiled Frank Cooper and Alan-Michael Spaulding. Mad Men Cast & Character Guide
Image
From Jon Hamm to Elisabeth Moss, the Mad Men characters are played by immensely talented actors playing deeply complex characters. Almost every major character is involved in extramarital affairs, amoral backroom dealings, and the relentless spread of secondhand smoke. Focusing on the unscrupulous executives of a New York advertising firm in the 1960s, Mad Men is subversively action-free. Whereas shows like The Sopranos relied on mob murders to keep the audience invested, Mad Men had to grip viewers with its characters and their interpersonal conflicts alone.

Throughout seven critically acclaimed seasons, the cast of Mad Men collectively won two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Many of Mad Men’s cast members received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for their performances, and some of them even took home trophies. The writers created a company full of rich, three-dimensional human beings, and the cast brought them to life.

All 18 Keanu Reeves Movies From The 1990s, Ranked
Image
Keanu Reeves has been acting since the 1980s, and has given the world great performances in the realm of action, adventure, drama, and even comedy. It's rare for someone whose most prolific catchphrase is "Whoah" to be able to show so much emotional depth in a wide range of roles. Reeves is known not to take himself too seriously while still being able to take on very serious roles.

The 1990s were a very rich decade for Keanu Reeves' best films, which saw him star in action-packed blockbusters like Speed, emotional indie films like My Own Private Idaho, and ensemble pieces like Bram Stoker's Dracula. His star was on the rise throughout that tumultuous time of growth, and he's been an unwavering part of pop culture ever since. While Reeves has a very stoic approach to acting, with some criticizing his limited range, it's that brooding calmness that makes...

“Do they hate making money?”: Transformers One Sequel in Jeopardy with Hasbro Cutting Funding to the Film Industry
Image
Despite its plotline and visuals, Transformers One’s performance was rather underwhelming. The movie garnered an array of reactions from the audience. Mostly, the reactions pointed to its addition to the franchise’s decline.

But that is not the end of it, especially with the recent announcement regarding the sequel.

On X several fans responded to the sequel being dropped. And while some may assume a delay, it is nothing of the sort. This precisely has to do with Hasbro’s decision regarding the movie.

Additionally, it is bound to jeopardize other movie franchises with its decision. It ties well with the Transformers sequel and its future.

The Boys Star You Likely Forgot Played A Character On Bones
Image
The closer one looks at "Bones," the more one begins to wonder if everything really does come back to Hart Hanson's long-lived rom-com/gnarly crime procedural. From multiple "Breaking Bad" actors showing up as guest stars to Kevin Yagher, the legendary creature designer who co-wrote Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow," playing a key creative role behind-the-scenes on the series with his brother Chris Yagher, it seems as though our plane of existence is merely a tangled web with "Bones" at the center. Were the show to somehow be lost to the ravages of time like so much older media has been, it's possible our reality as we know it would collapse. Clearly, we should stop playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon and start playing Six Degrees of Bones instead.

You think I'm kidding? Try this on for size: Before he came to fame playing Adonis Creed and Killmonger, Michael B. Jordan...

10 Underused Agents Of Shield Characters We Hope Appear In The MCU
Image
Marvel Studios has the opportunity to reinvent many underused characters from Agents of Shield in the MCU proper. Between its 2013 premiere and 2020 finale, Marvel Television's Agents of Shield introduced many brilliant characters into live-action, both those adapted from Marvel Comics and those created specifically for the ABC series. While characters such as Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Daisy Johnson and FitzSimmons got plenty of attention, several others unfortunately fell under the radar, never getting the chance to show their full potential.

Agents of Shield's seven seasons did their best to tie into the McU's official timeline, particularly in its early days, as it connected Marvel movies including The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron. This suggested that characters who debuted in Agents of Shield could have appeared on the big-screen, but this never occurred. Instead, Agents of Shield appears to have been de-canonized,...

King Crimson’s Red Receives 50th Anniversary Expanded Reissue
Image
King Crimson‘s seminal 1974 album Red is receiving an 50th anniversary expanded reissue on vinyl and CD/Blu-Ray, arriving October 25th.

The new reissue opens the vaults on the Red sessions, with the 2-cd/2-Blu-Ray package “representing all material to survive” from the original tapes.

The first disc includes a new Stereo mix from Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, as well as new instrumental mixes by Wilson. The prog musician/producer undertook remixes of Red back in 2009 — among his earliest remix work in the field — and was brought back to reprise that role 15 years later.

“What I hear on Red is the best representation of [the] ’72-74-era line-up in the studio,” said Wilson in the press release. “In effect this is a power trio record and their sound is just huge.”

Additional bonus material is contained on Disc 2, including new “Elemental Mixes” by longtime King Crimson producer and manager David Singleton.

Jon Hamm on the Role He Lost to Rob Lowe: I Could Murder This Part'
Image
Hamm almost lost out on his career-defining role in Mad Men after previously losing out on a role in The West Wing to Rob Lowe. Hamm was worried about being cast in Mad Men, recalling a past experience of reading a script he loved but not getting the part he wanted. While Hamm felt that people misunderstood Don Draper's character, his portrayal brought critical acclaim and awards, propelling him to success in various genres.

While Jon Hamm became synonymous with Don Draper in Mad Men, a previous audition experience almost left him feeling defeated before landing the iconic role. Having previously auditioned for the role of Sam Seaborn on The West Wing, a part he truly desired but went to Rob Lowe, Hamm worried history might repeat itself during the Mad Men audition process. The 25 Best Japanese Movies of 2023
Image
Japanese cinema has been on a somewhat successful stalemate for years now, with the titles produced (at least the ones we manage to sea in the West out of the 600 the country produces every year) retaining the same, relatively high quality, even though no particular steps forward have been made for years now Regarding the state of the industry in 2023, you can read the very informative article by Mark Schilling, but the thing I have to mention is that, despite the issues, local movies definitely have four things working quite well for them, particularly this year. First of all, the big names deliver almost always, with Miyazaki, Hamaguchi and Koreeda proving the fact this year also. Second of all, the quality of anime remains high as always and thirdly, some efforts at different cinematic approaches continue to take place, even though they can almost exclusively be found in low budget and short films.

Now under the umbrella of Gearbox Entertainment, Hopoo Games’ original came out a full decade ago, back during the burgeoning roguelite renaissance and two years after The Binding of Isaac hit PCs. Like Isaac, it proved a crucial hit in the indie space over time, and even perpetuated certain standards and tropes which would find their way into later roguelites, including the studio’s own massively successful sequel. Risk of Rain 2 served as an expanded 3D take on its predecessor, but Risk of Rain Returns is a formal remake, functionally reinvigorating a ten-year-old essential...

12 Actors Who Played Multiple Characters In The Same TV Show
Image
Some actors excel at playing multiple roles in TV shows and movies, like Winona Ryder in Bram Stoker's Dracula and the cast of Everything Everywhere All at Once. Recasting actors in completely unrelated roles in TV shows can go unnoticed by the audience, like Charles-Dean Chapman in Game of Thrones. Talented actors, such as Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black and Lisa Kudrow in Friends, can successfully portray multiple characters and create complex relationships on-screen.

Playing more than one role is a challenge for actors, especially when done simultaneously. But when done right, it can have a marvelous effect. It is not uncommon for actors to play more than one character in a TV show or movie, with scenarios including identical twins and evil clones being frequent. They may also be double-cast for thematic reasons. For example, an actor could be playing the ancestor of a main character to imply...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Starrer ‘Greedy People’ Offers Hope for Struggling Indie Film Business
Image
To fully grasp the dire state of theatrical distribution of independent films, consider the words of John Sloss, founder and CEO of Cinetic Media, who recently told Variety:

“It’s imperative for all of us to get behind reigniting the theatrical experience because I don’t think the streamers are ever going to be behind the new voices and independent films. The only way to really get them out in the world is to put them in a theater where they can be reviewed and where they can sit long enough for word of mouth to really support them. That’s really the dangerous moment we are in, in terms of getting people back in the theaters.”

Suppose there’s a way out of the “dangerous moment” for independent cinema that Sloss describes. In that case, it will probably come about because of talented indie filmmakers like director Potsy Ponciroli and his experienced,...

How Agents of Shield Revealed Ward’s Loyalties Before Hydra Did
Image
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is full of memorable twists and turns. From Hydra's infiltration to the Lmd takeover to time travel shenanigans, every season brings new surprises for fans of the show. The most shocking twist, however, remains one of its earliest: Grant Ward's betrayal. A major reason this reveal is so effective is that it's practically impossible to predict. That said, fans may have uncovered a huge hint at Ward's true allegiance.

Over Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s first season, fans watched Ward grow from lone wolf to team player who cared deeply about his teammates -- or so they thought. Season 1, Episode 17, "Turn, Turn, Turn," which aired a few days after Captain America: The Winter Soldier was released, revealed that Hydra had infiltrated the organization in its infancy and that Ward was a double agent. Although Ward shows no signs of his Hydra ties before this, one sinister...

CSI: New York Cast & Character Guide - Who Plays Who In The Police Procedural Spinoff
Image
The second spinoff in the wildly popular CSI franchise, CSI: New York told grittier stories and featured a cast of recognizable names in nearly every role. Debuting in 2004, the show follows detectives in New York City who use sophisticated science to crack some of the most high-profile cases in the Big Apple. Unlike the sun-drenched locations of the first two CSI series, New York's urban environment immediately gave the show a different tone, and a slew of violent and disturbing cases accentuated its procedural elements. Similar to its predecessors, CSI: New York had a fast-paced and exciting energy which made it a must-watch series each season.

Truly allowing its cast to shine, CSI: New York also added a lot of character drama to the action, and the episodes were usually a fine balance of both. Riding a wave of popularity during the aughts, CSI: New York was one of many...

Cult Expose: Netflix Defeats Injunction, Airs ‘In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal’ Documentary on Korean Religious Leaders
Image
Netflix and Korean public broadcaster Mbc on Thursday defeated a court application for an injunction to stop the airing of their documentary “In The Name of God: A Holy Betrayal.”

The 8-part series began airing from Friday (March 3). It is a Netflix Original, meaning that the streamer has global rights, including in Korea.

The show examines “the chilling true stories of four Korean leaders claiming to be prophets [and] exposes the dark side of unquestioning belief.”

Among its subjects is Christian Gospel Mission, also known as Providence, and also known as Jesus Morning Star, or Jms. It shares those initials with its controversial leader Jeong Myeong-seok (aka Jung Myung-seok) who is currently awaiting trial in Korea for sexually assaulting some of his female followers.

Jms sought an injunction to stop the docuseries from airing, claiming that the show is fictional, that it violates the principle of presumption of innocence and that it undermines religious freedom.

Image
Rep. David Cicilline (D-ri), who has championed a set of antitrust bills to curb the power of big tech, said that he plans to resign from Congress on June 1 to take a job at a non profit foundation.

Cicilline will serve as president and CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation.

Jon Hamm's Role On Gilmore Girls, Explained
Image
Five years before becoming famous for playing Don Draper on Mad Men, Jon Hamm appeared in one episode of Gilmore Girls. While the actor played Burt Ridley on the hospital drama Providence, which aired from 2000 to 2001, he became recognizable when he took on the part of his troubled advertising exec in 2007. Since then, Hamm has turned to film, effortlessly moving between comedy and drama. His roles range from Annie Walker's (Kristen Wiig) cold-hearted partner Ted in Bridesmaids to Beau Simpson in Top Gun: Maverick and Buddy in Baby Driver.

While Hamm has had a successful movie career, he has played several memorable TV characters in a range of genres, from Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to Matt Trent in the bleak Black Mirror episode "White Christmas." Jon Hamm's Gilmore Girls role made an impression, and he is one of the most renowned actors to appear in the long-running series.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Returning to Sundance With ‘Flora and Son,’ Working With Eddie Murphy on ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley’
Image
Joseph Gordon-Levitt first learned about Sundance Film Festival while he was making his big screen debut in 1992’s “A River Runs Through It.” That’s where the film’s director (and Sundance’s founder) Robert Redford gave him a T-shirt emblazoned with the festival’s moniker. But it wasn’t until he was a bit older that he fully understood the rebel spirit that has made Sundance a destination for indie auteurs and artists for decades.

“As a 14-year old, I started watching ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ ‘Sex Lies and Video Tape,’ ‘Swingers,’ ‘Sling Blade,’ ‘Big Night’ and all these movies that were coming through Sundance,” Gordon-Levitt remembers. “That was my thing in my adolescence. That was what I dreamed of doing.”

But getting up the mountain proved difficult. At that time, Gordon-Levitt was best known for his work in “3rd Rock From the Sun,” a broad comedy about a group of alien explorers.
