Doug Widley 1964 animated series "Jonny Quest," animated by Hanna-Barbera, only lasted 26 episodes, but for Gen-Xers, it may seem like a lot more. Thanks to a series of sweet, sweet syndication deals, along with the clever remixing and repackaging of the company's 1960s and 1970s shows, Hanna-Barbera cartoons remained in reruns for decades, allowing new generations to grow up watching "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?," "The Flintstones," and, uh, "Jabberjaw." For kids of the 1980s, not a Saturday slipped past without several Hanna-Barbera shows making their way into our eyeballs, often entirely by accident.

"Jonny Quest" always seemed to make its way into my generation's cartoon rotation, and many viewers my age became very fond of the show's chintzy, stilted animation, thick-lines drawing style, and stock "laser" sound effects. Browsing through the Hanna-Barbera catalog of animated series, one will find numerous timeless classics, like Johnny Quest, Wacky Racers, The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, etc. And within the expansive line-ups of cartoons created by the company, many have become lost to time or mostly forgotten; whether it be The Snorks or Jabberjaw, not all of them hold the same iconic status. However, within the forgotten catalog that hosts 249 stand-alone series, a few gems deserve to be revisited, or better yet — remade.

Pirates of the Dark Water, running for three seasons from 1991-92, is one such title. Set on the alien world of Mer, the fantasy/adventure cartoon series follows Ren, who is preordained to save the world from destruction. Truth be known, I’m more of a Buford Files guy than a Scooby-Doo guy, probably because that one ripped off Smokey and the Bandit, and every episode took place in a swamp, with way more opportunity for moss monsters. But man alive, ‘70s TV barfed up a ton of these Scooby wanna bes about ghost-chasers-with-dogs. And all of them got repeated endlessly through the ‘80s in syndication, even the ones that didn’t last a whole season. 2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.

WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!

One of the best procedurals currently on television is a half-hour cartoon that has been on television in one form or another since 1969 and was a major inspiration for what many (myself included) believe was the greatest serial drama in the history of television. The irony is that Scooby-Doo was solidly mediocre until the debut of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated last summer.

Maybe I just have a specific brand of Hanna-Barbera that I like, but I have to say that compared to Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch and Thundarr the Barbarian, Jabberjaw ranks as one of my favorite cartoons from the creators of Scooby-Doo. It’s just as silly and ridiculous as everything else that came out of the Hanna-Barbera factory, and it’s just as willing to throw racial stereotypes around without thinking, but Jabberjaw is just about having fun. Oh, and it’s about a shark that talks like the Three Stooges. That’s the element that was missing from Jaws.
