Synopsis

  • Kamal Bhatnagar (Rajesh Khanna) is a jealous husband who begins to doubt the fidelity of his wife Sunita (Mumtaz). Sunita and Kamal study in the same college. Kamal Bhatnagar is a studious young man from a middle-class family while, Sunita is a wealthy girl. Kamal is an all-rounder who excels in both studies and sports, and yet he is least interested in girls.

They meet when Suresh (Ranjeet) hits on Sunita by throwing flowers at her, and Sunita thinks that it was Kamal who was eve teasing her. Their initial hatred turns to love, when Kamal saves the damsel in distress. A villager was trying to extort money from Sunita by claiming that she drove over his chicken, thereby killing it. Kamal intervenes and warns the villager that the chicken was already dead and that he should not indulge in such scams.

Sunita tries to repay the favor by buying Kamal some cricket equipment that he can't afford. But Kamal takes it otherwise and thinks Sunita is making fun of his humble background. Kamal relents when Sunita starts crying.

Kamal tells Sunita that he needs to travel by train to his village, as his father has summoned him to settle a property dispute. Sunita offers to drive Kamal to his village in her car, but the petrol runs out and they are stuck in a storm. They get randy inside the car. In the village Sunita meets Kamal's father (A. K. Hangal). Kamal's father like Sunita, but Kamal is sure that her rich father would never agree to this match. But Sunita's parents (Rehman and Dina Pathak) agree to the match as Kamal is educated and talented. They get married with the consent of their respective families. Marriage is followed by honeymoon. They lead a happy life.

Kamal's best friend Mohan (Sanjeev Kumar) enters their lives. Kamal also gets a house and a job with the help of his best friend, Mohan. Mohan is extremely happy to have Kamal and Sunita in his life. Mohan is a singer and instrumentalist. Mohan's wife Alka hates Mohan. Mohan also knows that this marriage was a compromise by his father to save the company as Mohan's family was bankrupt. Mohan knows that his wife is cheating on him but won't divorce her due to fear of public humiliation. Taking pity on him, Sunita befriends Mohan.

Suresh works at the same company as Kamal. He gets Kamal to throw a huge party for entire staff. Suresh gets Mohan to play the sitar and Sunita to sing. Sunita doesn't sing when Kamal asks, but she sings when Mohan insists. This is the start of Kamal's obsession. Later, Kamal finds Sunita spending time with Mohan in his own house, when Kamal was supposed to be in the club. Even though Mohan explains that he came back to his house, but Alka was away and hence he came to Kamal's to pass some time. Kamal is very observant and sees how Sunita likes the gift from Mohan the best among them all. One night he finds someone running away from the direction of his house when he is about to enter. Kamal thinks it is Mohan, but actually that was Suresh coming out from Mohan's house (who lives just next door). Suresh was with Alka.

Kamal starts spying on Sunita, which she finds out. Kamal asks Sunita, whether she loves Mohan or not. Sunita is unable to convince Kamal that she loves only him. Kamal questions Sunita and argues with her, Sunita has no idea of whats happening but is disappointed and leaves to her parents house. Sunita's father also comes to try and talk sense into Kamal, but again, he refuses to listen. Sunita's mother is persuading Sunita to go and talk to Kamal. Sunita herself doesn't want to give up on Kamal yet, but her father furiously forbids her to go.

Mohan comes and asks Sunita to tie a Rakhi on him to help convince Kamal of their innocence, but her father rebuffs that idea too. Sunita's father takes the matter to court, as a tactic to scare Kamal into talking to Sunita. But Kamal takes the legal notice as a challenge and decides to fight for divorce. Sunita's father doesn't show up in court due to fear of humiliation and the divorce is granted.

Kamal leaves Sunita, not knowing that she is pregnant with his child. Sunita is on the verge of mental instability. One evening Kamal sees a man jumping the fence between his and Mohan's property. He gives chase, and catches the man who introduces himself as Suresh. Suresh admits that he's having an affair with Mohan's wife Alka, and tells Kamal about Mohan's innocence. Repentant, Kamal asks forgiveness first from Mohan, who gladly grants it.

Kamal goes to Sunita's father to apologize but is thrown out of the house without meeting her as Sunita has remarried. Sunita remarries to provide a secure home for her child.

Depressed and confused, Kamal becomes a homeless wanderer. Many years later, Kamal is a beggar and finds an ad in the papers from Mohan, asking him to come back. He visits his house (which is now occupied by another family) to revive his memories. There, he is accused of theft and is beaten up. However, Mohan finds him there and reconciles with him.

Mohan tells Kamal that his daughter is getting married in a day and that Sunita was pregnant when he left her. Sunita had written to Mohan to find Kamal so that he could bless his daughter at her wedding. Though, hesitant, Mohan convinces him to attend.

Kamal can't bring himself to face Sunita or her father. so, he watches from afar alongside the servants of the house. A huge fire breaks out and, in the chaos, Kamal's daughter is trapped. Kamal risks his own life to save her. Sunita recognizes Kamal. Kamal touches Sunita's feet as his final act of apology for not having faith in her. Kamal happily blesses his daughter but dies due to his wounds. The film ends as the wedding turns into a funeral.
