Ryan Reynolds can currently be found at the top of the domestic box office as part of The Croods: A New Age‘s voice cast, and while the animated sequel may have scored the biggest opening since Tenet debuted at the beginning of September, a five-day haul of just over $14 million only serves to illustrate the continued plight of the theatrical industry.
The 44 year-old already has The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and Free Guy scheduled to arrive on the big screen next year, while Deadpool 3 has finally gathered some momentum by hiring a pair of writers, but Reynolds appears to be more than happy operating in the world of streaming for the time being, after striking up a fruitful partnership with Netflix.

“Queen Sugar”
September 6, 2016 on Own
What Is It? Ava DuVernay has teamed with Oprah for this series about a family reunited by tragedy in Louisiana, and she’s brought with her an entirely female director roster (a first).
I’ll Like It If I Like… Stories set in the South, stories that feature strong female characters and stories that aren’t afraid of taking on big issues head-on.
Why Should I Care? “Queen Sugar” has its flaws, but there’s some rich filmmaking on display and there’s potential for growth with these characters.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you for taking...

What we lack more and more these days are epic fight scenes in the final part of kung Fu/Martial Art movies. We have seen less and less one on one fight scenes in the final battle over the past 15-20 years, which is a shame but we have seen recently a few flicks bringing that winning formula back.

The drama is based on the book by Anthony Bruno that chronicles the life of Richard Kuklinski (played by Michael Shannon), a professional hitman who kept his work secret from his family. A new trailer for the thriller The Iceman has landed online. The film stars Michael Shannon and chronicles the life of Richard Kuklinski, a professional hitman who kept his work secret from his family. The contract killer received the nickname “The Iceman” because he froze the bodies of his victims in order to disguise their time of death and throw the authorities off track. This trailer makes the film feel a bit more dramatic than the action-oriented first trailer, but it looks like it might reveal a tad too much of the film’s plot. Matt caught the film at the Toronto Film Festival and was not impressed by director/co-writer Ariel Vromen’s shallow take on Kuklinski, saying the pic is “about a hitman and nothing else.” Hit the jump to watch the new trailer. The film also stars Chris Evans, Ray Liotta, Winona Ryder, and James Franco. The Iceman opens on May 3rd.

The first trailer for the thriller The Iceman has been released. The film chronicles the life of Richard Kuklinski, a professional hitman who kept his work secret from his family. The contract killer received the nickname “The Iceman” because he froze the bodies of his victims in order to disguise their time of death and throw the authorities off track. “Michael Shannon as a hitman” was really all I needed to hear to get me in the theater, but the film looks to have some great scenes between Shannon and Ray Liotta. Moreover, Chris Evans is nearly unrecognizable in dirty long hair as Kuklinski’s mentor. James Franco was originally slated to play that role before Evans took over, but it appears that Franco is still in the film as a supporting character. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Directed by Ariel Vromen, the film also stars Winona Ryder.

Matthew McConaughey stars as the eponymous Killer Joe in William Friedkin’s crime-thriller, heralded by critics as an unmissable dark and twisted film this year, which sounds perfect to me. It recently landed the notorious Nc-17 rating across the Atlantic – a rating potentially damaging to its Us box office performance.
The film debuted in Venice last year to brilliant reviews, and the anticipation has been high ever since.
eOne are distributing it here in the UK, and they’ve put out the first 20-second TV spot ahead of its release in two weeks’ time. The film is also set to open the Edinburgh Film Festival next week (tickets to the opening available here).

I’m still not entirely sure why William Friedkin’s latest, “Killer Joe” has been slapped with an Nc-17. Nothing I’ve seen from the trailers, and now these three clips, would seem to indicate it’s any more deserving of the rating than, well, 99% of the Rated R movies out there. According to the MPAA, the film got hit with the Nc-17 rating for “graphic aberrant content involving violence and sexuality, and a scene of brutality”. “Aberrant”? Huh. Anyways, check out three new clips from the movie below. This is the trailer for an Nc-17 rated film called Killer Joe, which has a impressive cast of actors that includes Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, and Thomas Haden Church. The movie was directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist), and it looks like it could be pretty good. I'm normally not a fan of McConaughey, but it looks like this movie plays to his strengths.
The story is a thriller that follows a young man who hires someone to kill his mom. The hitman wants his money up front, but Hirsch can't pay him, which causes some intense issues involving the guy's sister. This has got to be one hell of a hardcore intense film to get an Nc-17 rating. It doesn't look like it got that rating for the sex. Apparently, if they wanted to get a R-rating the studio would have had to change the ending,...

The trailer for William Friedkin's Killer Joe has gone online. The Nc-17-rated film centers on a son (Emile Hirsch) and his father (Thomas Haden Church) who hire a cop moonlighting as a hitman (Matthew McConaughey) to murder their mother in order to get her insurance policy. I caught Killer Joe last year at Tiff, and with the exception of McConaughey's performance, the flick is pretty terrible. However, the absolutely bonkers ending almost makes the film worth your time. Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Juno Temple and Gina Gershon. Killer Joe opens July 27th. Click over to Apple to see the trailer in HD. Matthew McConaughey’s resurgence in the past few years has been impressive to watch, diversifying his career with the likes of The Lincoln Lawyer last year, and heading in new directions once more this year with Killer Joe, Magic Mike, The Paperboy, and Mud.
The first trailer for the next of those, Killer Joe, has debuted over at Apple, and it’s definitely promising. The film got brilliant reviews at Venice Film Festival last year, where it had its world premiere, and is on a number of Most Anticipated Films of the Year lists.

One thing is for sure; after seeing Killer Joe, you’ll never look at fried chicken the same way again. The Exorcist director William Friedkin re-teams with Bug writer Tracy Letts for this twisted drama, which has been slapped with an Nc-17, a rating the distributor won’t be appealing. I saw it during Tiff and wasn’t a fan, with only the final scene delivering the wacky thrills I was expecting.
But our own Jack Giroux was more favorable, saying this is “a deranged romantic comedy, the type we don’t get as often as we should. You’ll laugh, with the film or possibly at it, but either way you’ll still be laughing.” The first trailer has arrived via Apple and you can see the shenanigans below for the film starring Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon and Thomas Haden Church.

Winona Ryder is joining the cast of the indie thriller The Iceman. The drama is based on the book by Anthony Bruno that chronicles the life of Richard Kuklinski, a professional hitman who kept his work secret from his family. Michael Shannon is onboard to play Kuklinski, and Deadline reports that Ryder has just committed to star as Kuklinski’s wife. The project nearly fell apart after James Franco dropped out, but Chris Evans quickly swooped in and took over the role of Kuklinski’s mentor. The contract killer received the nickname “The Iceman” because he froze the bodies of his victims in order to disguise their time of death and throw the authorities off track. Benicio Del Toro had been set to play mob boss Roy Demeo, but this latest report makes no mention of his casting so it’s possible he’s no longer involved with the project.

Assassin. Hitman. Contract killer. Call it what you will, it’s an archetype both familiar and fascinating to film fans. Provided, of course, that you accept the conceit that they’re all debonair, high-skilled murder magicians rather than project kids with meth mouth and 2-litre pop bottles taped to stolen handguns. But hey, that’s why we watch movies instead of hanging out by downtown subway stations after midnight. Tonight, Sound on Sight takes a look at three films about assassins: Luc Besson’s 1994 film The Professional, 1976’s Le Samourai, and this weekend’s comic book adaptation Red.

Amidst the slew of posters revealed at Afm there is a particularly interesting one: The Iceman. It's interesting for one major reason: talk about a film based on Philip Carlo's biography of Jersey mafia hitman Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski has been buzzing for over a year with comeback kid Mickey Rourke attached to star. Now out of left field comes another biopic starring Michael Shannon as the 300lb killer, with Benecio del Toro and James Franco co-starring. Ariel Vroman is set to direct and shooting is set to begin in summer 2011. Nu Image is distributing.
This puts Shannon's Iceman way ahead of Rourke's - as there is no director assigned to the latter's film, which features the hefty title The Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer. Also, Shannon's role as Nelson Van Alden on HBO's acclaimed Boardwalk Empire should help propel the film. Not to mention, just think about it,...

At the time, it was revealed that Philip Carlo, who authored the book The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, was pulling out of his movie deal to adapt the book with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura because Bonaventura wanted to cast Channing Tatum to play Kuklinski.

Finally caught up with The Expendables this weekend. Thought it was kind of miserable, to be honest -- an ugly, loud mess of incoherent action that might have amounted to something in the hands of an expert technician, viz. not Sylvester Stallone. But Mickey Rourke, playing a randy ex-mercenary tattoo artist who delivers an unexpectedly moving speech about the moment he knew he had lost his soul, was a definite highlight. The aging, jaded tough may be becoming a stock character for him, but it's a good one, and he does it with feeling.
And so we get The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, based on the best-selling book by Philip Carlo, itself based on the true story of outspoken former contract-killer-slash-loving-husband-and-father Richard Kuklinski, who claims to have been involved in high-profile assassinations such as those of Jimmy Hoffa and Paul Castellano, and to have killed more than 100 people.

Mickey Rourke's career received a nice boost in recent years, after his work in films like "Sin City" and "The Wrestler," the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination.
