Strange story, well acted
Washington Irving's tale of a headless horseman seems a difficult subject to adapt into a film, however it seems to have been pulled off. The story of a New York inspectors creepy encounter with unknown forces is superbly portrayed by Johnny Depp. As in many of his films, Depp is usually overlooked and only remembered for his recent Jack Sparrow performances. Here though he is at his best mixing serious horror with slightly humorous characteristics.
The film deals with a rather outlandish theme, but Depp is there to see it does not go straight over the audiences head. The headless horseman is a typical symbol in Gothic horror stories, but here it is Johnny Depp that brings it to life. Of course the other actors all deserve similar praise and as a collective help make Sleepy Hollow an excellent couple of hours viewing.
