(Cbr) Any episode of a DC television show titled "Birds of Prey" is going to come under incredible scrutiny. After all, that’s the name of one of DC’s longest-lived – and most beloved – ongoing female-lead series. Since most comic book movies still don’t pass the Bechdel test, fans are more than eager to see female interactions that don’t hinge upon their male co-stars in television shows and movies. Well, geeks, the Us election is (thankfully) over, and things went better for queers – and women – and queer women – than any of us thought. Marriage equality in three more states! A lesbian senator (Tammy Baldwin, the first-ever openly gay Us senator, and geek hero in her own right)! Let’s not forget, this was the first time in history that marriage equality was won by a popular vote. The times, they are a-changing.

In honor of all the good news, we thought we’d take a look at a few of our favorite political women from sci-fi/fantasy. If only there were more women of color represented in the politics of speculative fiction.

Chicago – Sci-fi film buffs in the Windy City are invited to attend an April marathon bursting with cinematic gems. “Sci-Fi Spectacular 6” kicks off at noon Saturday, April 28, at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave. It showcases over 14 hours of beloved features, shorts and rare trailers as they were originally intended to be experienced—on the big screen.

A man is chased in the Everglades and after speaking in Spanish, he is shot by an arrow through the heart. Another man finds him and attempts to remove his necklace, but doesn't reckon with Horatio (David Caruso) sneaking up behind him. Horatio thinks he killed the other man. In french, he begs for Horatio to shoot him. Natalia (Eva Larue) and Ryan (Jonathan Togo) check the Cs and Natalia comments on the arrow going through the tissue and causing a lot of damage. The bow, the murder weapon, turns out to be a compound bow, which Ryan claims could be dumped anywhere out there., well not just anywhere, since Ryan will turn out to be the one who finds it. Me Tom (Christian Clemenson) finds the Vic had a brand on his arm in the form of the number 9, recently burned there. He also has a wound on his right ankle.

Calgary’s $100 Film Festival is a celebration of film. Not “film” as a concept, but of actual celluloid. This year, their 19th, is three nights of strictly 8mm and 16mm films — No Video! — screening at the historic Plaza Theatre on March 3-5.

Each night starts off with a real bang: A unique live film and music performance by local musicians and filmmakers. Thursday features the combination of blues musician Erin Ross and a film by Farrah Alladin and Nathan Taylor; Friday is experimental indie band Axis of Conversation and a film by Alex Mitchell; and Friday is musician Kris Ip Ryzak and a film by Ben Tsui.

Robert Rodriguez’ Machete could use some serious cuts. Despite adopting the tone of a lean, mean exploitation flick, the film feels flabby and is burdened with too many characters and a convoluted plotline that reduces the screen-time of its Mexploitation hero. It’s particularly frustrating when what works in the movie works so damn well. The action is exciting and the jokes are hilarious. But Rodriguez runs up against the same problem he had with Once Upon a Time in Mexico when he reached for an epic and neglected the power of the angry little bloodbath at his disposal.
