Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion

Hideaki Anno: “I wanted people who watched it to feel encouragement” on Why ‘Evangelion’ Isn’t Just Escapist Fiction
Image
Neon Genesis Evangelion may seem like your usual mecha anime at first glance: angsty teen pilots, giant robots, and end-of-the-world combat. But in all seriousness, if you were hoping it was going to be Gundam but with an extra kick, you probably found yourself by episode 25 just sitting there going, “Wait, did I just lose my mind?”

And that’s exactly how creator Hideaki Anno wanted it. Because Evangelion isn’t just a show about fighting monsters. It’s a reflection: a reflection of you and your fears, your trauma, and all the feelings you work so hard to keep suppressed. Anno didn’t create it to entertain you. He created it to wake you up.

You Totally Missed the Best Live-Action Anime of 2024, But Don't Worry! It Is on Netflix Now.
Image
Anime had an incredible cultural impact in 2024, taking over streaming services like never before. Specifically, Netflix welcomed a variety of new anime series and films to its platform this past year, with a list of content so varied, there is sure to be something to entertain any anime fan.

There are many fantastic anime movies on Netflix, including Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End Of Evangelion, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop, and A Whisker Away, to name just a few. However, Netflix's best 2024 anime movie is, surprisingly enough, a live-action film.

Film Review Site Axes Evangelion Movie From List Rankings Then Reverses Course After Fan Pressure
Image
The Neon Genesis Evangelion series is well-known as one of the best and most popular anime of all time, as well as one of the most controversial. The same is the case with the movie The End of Evangelion, which is now making waves for another reason than its potentially confusing ending.

The film celebration and criticism website Letterboxd is known for its commentary on movies, although a recent ranking of the best movies ever rubbed some Evangelion fans the wrong way. The film was temporarily removed from the site's rankings due to its connection to the show. Now, it's been reinstated, showing just how much it means to fans of the franchise.

Letterboxd List Change Sparks Backlash From Anime Fans
Image
Not every change is going to be met with glowing enthusiasm, an important lesson that movie social cataloging site Letterboxd is learning after a recent list change. The service has a list of the Top 250 Narrative Feature Films and the new eligibility rules are rubbing anime fans the wrong way.

On the Letterboxd site or app, you can find the Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films List written by David Vis, followed by the criteria to maintain a spot in the rankings. The description of the list reads, "Letterboxd's Top 250 movies, based on the average weighted rating of all Letterboxd users. I removed all stand-up specials, stage plays, concert films, documentaries, shorts, 'collection listings' and other 'rarities', so only feature length narrative movies are listed here. Films should have a minimum of 5,000 ratings to be eligible to enter the list." One recent update is the main bone of contention because it...

Every Neon Genesis Evangelion Ending, Ranked
Image
Hideaki Anno's iconic mecha franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion famously redefined how anime can portray a classic heroic narrative, deconstructing the tropes that defined the mecha genre and becoming its new face for decades to come. Beloved for its experimental storytelling, endlessly complex and flawed characters, and stellar thematic writing, Evangelion has been a cornerstone of anime culture ever since the anime first aired in 1995. However, one of the most confusing things about Evangelion has always been its many iterations, all of which exist as equally canonical despite contradicting each other greatly.

Between the original TV anime, the 1997 film duology, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's manga, and the Rebuild movie series, Evangelion has four distinct conclusions. Each finale is a unique look at how Shinji's journey could've played out, and every iteration of Evangelion has something of value to add to the franchise's overarching narrative. The many ends of Evangelion all have their flaws and merits.

U.S. Trailer for Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time Concludes One of Sci-Fi’s Great Sagas
Image
The greatest sci-fi franchise of our lifetime is not Star Wars, Star Trek, and certainly not anything in the comic realm. It’s The Matrix, obviously, and we positively cannot wait for Lana Wachowski’s fourth installment this December—but second place, and actually germane to this article, belongs to Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion, a 26-episode anime, his follow-up feature The End of Evangelion, (both streaming on Netflix), and subsequent series of remakes / remixes, Rebuild of Evangelion (about which more here).

After years of delays both creative and Covid, the final installment Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time—supposedly the very last Evangelion title to which Anno will put his name; he’s since moved on to other things—finally arrived in Japan earlier this year, breaking their box-office records in a second. Its future elsewhere remained uncertain until today: the film, whose new title Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 suggests a...

‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ to Get First-Ever Blu-ray Release from Gkids
Image
The influential anime series “Neon Genesis Evangelion” will soon be available on Blu-ray in North America for the first time. Gkids, known for distributing Studio Ghibli films in the U.S., will release the 26-episode show and two “Evangelion” films next year on Blu-ray and digital download.

Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the original airing of the first episode of “Neon Genesis Evangelion” in Japan. The celebrated series, created by Hideaki Anno, takes place in 2015 after Earth has been damaged by a cataclysmic event. The fallout includes attacks by aliens that can only be defeated by manned military robots that require a mental connection with their pilots. The existential threat to humanity also serves as an exploration of the human psyche.

IndieWire senior film critic David Ehrlich called the series “essential viewing” for anime fans or for anyone “even casually interested in a work of popular television so daring...

After highlighting 40 films that we can guarantee are worth seeing this year and 30 films we hope will get U.S. distribution, it’s time we venture into the unknown.
