A Yellowstone Star Is The Only Actor Who Ever Dared To Clash With Clint Eastwood
Image
Clint Eastwood is a man of few words -- at least, he tries to be. This is what makes his appearance on the sadly erstwhile television series "Inside the Actors Studio," hosted by the late, great James Lipton, such riveting television. On a talk show where Lipton encouraged interviewees to be open and loquacious, Eastwood often resisted the host's attempts to find parallels between his private and professional life. It's an incredibly good-natured conversation, but Eastwood lets Lipton know when he's ready to move on, or skip altogether, a subject he rather not discuss.

Moving on has been a central theme in Eastwood life. When he was a young man, his father told him, "You either progress or decay," a philosophy the star has long observed as an actor and a director. Eastwood has never had much truck for artistic indulgence. Having honed his craft as a performer over eight...

Johnny Depp Almost Played Ferris Bueller—But His Busy Schedule Led To Matthew Broderick’s Iconic Role
Image
Johnny Depp Missed Ferris Role (Photo Credit – Instagram/Facebook)

Hold up, imagine Johnny Depp as Ferris Bueller. Crazy, right? That almost happened before Matthew Broderick took up the role. Back in the ‘80s, Depp was chosen for Ferris in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The catch? A packed schedule forced him to turn it down. And just like that, Broderick became the charming troublemaker we know and love.

As Depp himself admitted on Inside the Actors Studio, “I was offered the part as Ferris, but couldn’t accept due to scheduling conflicts.” He wasn’t salty about it, though. In fact, he was all about giving props to Broderick.

Now, let’s hit rewind. Johnny Depp was still climbing the Hollywood ladder in A Nightmare on Elm Street days. Imagine him as Ferris Bueller—would Ferris have traded charm for a brooding edge? We’ll never know, but Matthew Broderick turned Ferris into the scheming,...

Bradley Cooper movies: 16 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
In just over two decades, Bradley Cooper has become one of the most acclaimed actors, producers and filmmakers of his peer group. Cooper – who famously studied at the Actors Studio in New York and once even asked two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn a question from the audience on “Inside the Actors Studio” – made his feature acting debut in 2001’s “Wet Hot American Summer,” and later broke out in comedies like “Wedding Crashers” and television hits like “Alias.”

But starting with 2012’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” Cooper reached another level. That film from David O. Russell landed Cooper his first Oscar nomination and put him on the map of serious filmmakers. In the nine years since the success of “Silver Linings,” Cooper has received seven additional Oscar nominations, including as co-writer and producer of “A Star Is Born” and producer of “American Sniper” and “Joker,” and worked with top filmmakers such as Russell,...

5 Years Later, See the Most Memorable ‘Inside the Actors Studio’ Moments
Image
During his lifetime, James Lipton was a Guiding Light actor, a soap opera writer, a Broadway librettist and lyricist, a novelist, and Actors Studio dean — and it was in that lattermost capacity that the American public knew him best. From 1994 to his retirement in 2018, Lipton hosted Inside the Actors Studio on Bravo, asking Hollywood stars about their craft for the edification of his acting students and for his TV audience. “I am not sure that there had been a program prior to Inside the Actors Studio that gave such sustained, deep attention to the labor of screen performance,” Henry Svec, an assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, told NBC News in 2020 following Lipton’s death. “Celebrity culture is so often about the private deeds or misdeeds of the people behind the images, but on Inside the Actors Studio, especially those first few seasons, there was a foregrounding of the...

Why NBCUniversal Is Holding On to Bravo as It Spins Off the Rest of Its Cable Nets
Image
NBC bought Bravo in 2002, making the small, arts-focused network its first entertainment cable network. Fast forward to 2025, and Bravo — a very different kind of channel than it was two decades ago — will soon be the company’s only cable outfit.

As Comcast spins off most of the NBCUniversal cable networks — USA, MSNBC, CNBC, E!, Oxygen, Syfy and Golf Channel — into a separate organization, it strikingly has decided to keep Bravo in the original company alongside NBC, Peacock and Telemundo.

Bravo isn’t NBCUniversal’s most-watched cabler — that would be MSNBC, whose shift to SpinCo raises a bunch of thorny issues, including potentially having to consider changing its name. It isn’t even NBCU’s top-rated entertainment cable channel, which is USA Network: Per Variety’s 2023 networks ranker, MSNBC averaged 1.22 million viewers last year, with USA at 688,000 and Bravo at 571,000.

So why Bravo? Quite simply, in a world of zombie cable networks,...

What Happened to Richard Dreyfuss?
Image
Picture this: A big-name actor strolls on stage to intro a screening of one of his classic flicks. So far, so good. But hold up – he’s rocking a dress? Wild. The crowd’s eating it up, but then some stagehands rush in to yank it off him. He doesn’t put up much of a fight, but the audience is not having it – they’re booing like crazy. It turns out that the dress was part of the gag all along, but maybe not the awkward strip show. Little did they know, this wacky moment was just a warm-up for what was coming: Richard Dreyfuss going off about kids changing genders, the parents that push them into it, women in Hollywood (including a dig at his old co-star Barbra Streisand), and the whole #MeToo thing. Talk about a plot twist.

Was this just another celeb crash-and-burn, Hollywood chewing up and spitting out another star?...

“Of course, he was flipped out”: Legendary Harry Potter Actor Believed He Was Being Pranked After Getting a Call from Clint Eastwood for the Greatest Movie of His Career
Image
Although Richard Harris might have thought he was the target of a prank, Clint Eastwood was certain he wanted the legendary actor for one of his finest films.

Richard Harris passed away in 2002 after leading an extremely successful career as an actor. It has been over two decades since his passing but his legacy is still alive, especially in the hearts of Harry Potter fans. He played Professor Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films, the latter of which was released after his death.

Despite being best known as our favorite Hogwarts professor, Richard Harris had many other iconic roles in his portfolio including Gulliver in Gulliver’s Travels, King Arthur in Camelot, and so on. Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven is one such film that might be considered as the best work of his career.

Why Did Emilio Estevez Change His Last Name From Sheen?
Image
Emilio Estevez chose to keep his birth name unlike his brother Carlos Sheen, to honor his parents and avoid prejudice in Hollywood. Martin Sheen used a stage name to avoid being typecast and inspired Emilio to keep his original last name in his successful career. The Estevez family proved that talent outweighs name changes, with Emilio succeeding in film and Martin making a heartfelt movie with his son.

Emilio Estevez is best recognized as a member of the Brat Pack, young actors in the 1980s who appeared in iconic coming-of-age films of the era. The group included Estevez, Molly Ringwald, and Anthony Michael Hall, among others. Estevez's most notorious role as a member was in the 1985 cult classic The Breakfast Club, as Andrew Clark, the jock in the wrestling program, alongside other Brat Pack members, including Judd Nelson as teenage rebel John Bender.

In addition to The Breakfast Club, Estevez...

“I got afraid of it sometimes shooting the picture”: Clint Eastwood’s Real Genius as a Director Was Trusting 1 Harry Potter Star With His Plan That Stole the Scene in ‘Unforgiven’
Image
Have you ever witnessed the transformative power of true acting prowess married with masterful direction? In the movie industry, Clint Eastwood’s real genius as a filmmaker crystallized in moments such as trusting the indomitable Richard Harris with his evocative vision in the 1992 Western flick, Unforgiven.

This is especially evident in the scene-stealing role of English Bob—an arrogant, pseudo-aristocratic gunslinger who is anything but what he seems. Harris, widely celebrated for his gravitas as Albus Dumbledore in the early Harry Potter flicks, went down the rabbit hole by delving deep into historical complexities to flesh out his character’s (in Unforgiven) deceptive nature.

Clint Eastwood as William Munny in Unforgiven | Warner Bros. Pictures

Eastwood’s count on Harris’ interpretation added a rich layer of authenticity to Unforgiven, a film that not only challenged the traditional tropes of Westerns but also reflected on the fables we cherish about our heroes & their legacies.

Remembering Sam Rubin: Ktla’s Gentleman on the Red Carpet Who Never Stopped From Having the ‘Best F—ing Time’
Image
I spent the first 37 years of my life on the East Coast, and even there, I knew who Sam Rubin was.

The beloved Ktla Los Angeles entertainment reporter, who died May 10 at age 64, was a Hollywood fixture for over 30 years, beloved, trusted and respected. Drawing heartfelt tributes ranging from industry veterans like Tom Hanks and Henry Winkler and rising stars like Charmaine Bingwa, I’ve never seen such an outpouring for an entertainment journalist since perhaps Roger Ebert in 2013. Sam greeted everyone with the same infectious enthusiasm and genuine curiosity, whether they were industry stalwarts or nervous newcomers. He was synonymous with Los Angeles but he was also known well outside of Southern California through his reporting for ITV and Australia’s 9 Network.

I was fortunate to spend time with Sam off-camera, serving with him on the board of the Critics Choice organization. On my first trip to Los...

On the Guest List for Bradley Cooper’s Sbiff Tribute: Brad Pitt, Carey Mulligan, and a Few Impressions
Image
Amid tributes from Brad Pitt, Carey Mulligan, and the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival itself, “Maestro” director, co-writer, and star Bradley Cooper fit in his own send-ups to a few famous names he’s gotten to work with.

On Thursday evening, the multi-hyphenate was on hand to accept the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, and the current Oscar nominee reflected on his career in conversation with Deadline’s Pete Hammond, including the period in which he was a student asking questions at tapings of “Inside the Actors Studio,” hosted by James Lipton.

Recalling when he got to query his future “Silver Linings Playbook” co-star Robert De Niro about whether an acting choice he made in the 1990 film “Awakenings” was inspired by someone he knew, or was organic, Cooper said, “I thought maybe he would laugh. You think all these weird things, that he was going to laugh at you.

Watch out Cillian Murphy, Bradley Cooper is coming for that Oscar
Image
There is a video of a young Bradley Cooper asking a deeply thoughtful question to Robert De Niro about his process for the film “Awakenings.” He was among those studying at The Actors Studio Drama School who were the audience for “Inside The Actors Studio” hosted by the late James Lipton. Bradley would guest on the show in 2011.

Through the 2000s, Cooper had great stints in television with a lead role on the Fox sitcom “Kitchen Confidential” which was cancelled after one season and a regular role in J.J. Abram’s “Alias.” It wasn’t until 2009’s “The Hangover” that he got his big break. Todd Philip’s chaotic buddy comedy was a box office smash, making just shy of $500 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. It even won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy in 2011. This spawned two successful sequels that took the box office total for the trilogy to nearly 1.5 billion dollars.

A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Heather Langenkamp Says Co-Star Johnny Depp Seemed "Kind of Tortured" by Acting
Image
Heather Langenkamp remembers Johnny Depp being a dedicated and serious actor during their time working together on A Nightmare on Elm Street. Langenkamp initially thought Depp would go back to being a musician after the film, as she knew about his passion for music. Langenkamp is still close with some of her Nightmare co-stars, including Robert Englund and Amanda Wyss, and their friendships have grown over the years through conventions.

“I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy.” A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) taunts Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), with those famous words, before he sucks her boyfriend Glen into a bed and turns him into a bright-red fountain of blood! Glen was, of course, the first feature film appearance for Hollywood A-lister Johnny Depp, and Langenkamp recalls the famous actor being a pleasure to work with during the original A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Langenkamp said during...

The ‘Top Chef’ Oral History: “How Is This Going Off the Rails on Day One?”
Image
Over two decades, Bravo’s Top Chef has introduced viewers to nearly 300 food luminaries — making and breaking careers with what the culinary community has come to regard as the most prestigious (or at least the most taxing) cooking competition.

THR spent months speaking with dozens of the executives, producers, talent and chefs who’ve worked on the show over its 20-season run, and the result is a definitive oral history of the landmark reality competition. Previously untold anecdotes about that frantic first season and early days of “too much” reality drama and testimonials of its reshaping of food media — “Food Network should be paying Bravo residuals!” — and incalculable impact on American dining tell the story of how Top Chef elevated itself from mere genre TV to become an institution.

“But You Can’T Taste The Food …”

Amid a flurry of mergers and acquisitions, Barry Diller’s Universal Television portfolio is...

Sally Field Praises The ‘Method’ And Challenges Denier Brian Cox To An “Act-Off” Ahead Of Celebrating The Actors Studio 75th At Academy Museum
Image
Exclusive: The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has been celebrating the 75th anniversary of The Actors Studio with special screenings and in-person conversations on Sunday nights in August and September. Of course, the studio is the thespian mecca and home to so many in the profession looking to hone their craft and work out their approach to their art. The guru teacher most associated with it was the great Lee Strasberg, and it even had its own long-running TV series Inside The Actors Studio in which so many stars came back to share secrets of success that had to much to do with the teaching of Method acting, or at least that was how it was labeled.

Not every actor is a fan of the “Method,” and just this week there was a trade headline straight out of a Toronto Film Festival panel where Succession star Brian Cox minced no words,...

Benedict Cumberbatch at an event for Le Hobbit : La Bataille des Cinq Armées (2014)
Benedict Cumberbatch returns as surgeon-superhero Stephen Strange, now on a mission to protect a teen who can visit parallel universes

We are back in the bizarre rococo world – or actually now worlds – of Doctor Strange, Marvel’s mindbending surgeon-turned-superhero who is played with sonorous conviction by Benedict Cumberbatch. He strides unselfconsciously around in a velveteen outfit accessorised with pointy cloak, jet-black goatee and low hairline of pin-sharp definition – similar to the late James Lipton, presenter of TV’s Inside the Actors Studio. Sam Raimi takes over directing duties from the first film’s Scott Derrickson and brings to it essentially the same lite-scary/action aesthetic.

As ever, there is a pert tai chi discipline to the little circular sparkly shapes and mystical cosmic portholes that Dr Strange creates with swivelling hand-movements, and he flies through the air in the accepted style, not facing down flat with one fist out like Superman,...

Ed Carroll Steps Down from AMC Networks After 34-Year Run
Image
AMC Networks chief operating officer Ed Carroll is stepping down after 34 years with the company.

Carroll will stay through year’s end. He’s the latest executive to leave the company that is seen as a prime acquisition target at a time of consolidation in media.

Carroll oversaw all business operations for the company and recent years focused on building out its portfolio of niche streaming services and the AMC Plus service.

“For decades, Ed has been the heart and soul of AMC Networks,” said Josh Sapan, former AMC Networks President and Chief Executive Officer and recently named AMC Networks Executive Vice Chairman, in a statement. “He has been at the center of the shows and movies that brought success to the company, and at the center of what has made AMC Networks a great place to work. In a business where credit for achievement can be actively sought, Ed looked for none,...

AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll To Exit, Ending His 34-Year Tenure As M&a Speculation Continues To Swirl
Image
Ed Carroll, the longtime chief operating officer of AMC Networks, has decided to exit at the close of 2021 after 34 years at the company.

The exec, who had a key role in ushering in signature hits like Mad Men and Breaking Bad, was named COO in 2009. He has a five-year contract due to expire on December 31. His departure follows word last month that former CEO Josh Sapan was also stepping down after his own 26-year tenure. The company has installed former Showtime boss Matt Blank as interim CEO.

The Sapan-Blank news fueled speculation that after more than a decade as a publicly traded company, AMC Networks was perhaps taking a closer look at the vibrant M&a marketplace. The home of The Walking Dead has long been bruited about as a potential takeover target, but that decision rests with a small group of shareholders: the Dolan family, which controls the company.

How Television Networks Are Celebrating Women’s History Month in 2021
Image
March honors the trailblazing women of history, and television is joining in by highlighting their triumphs and life stories.

Each day of March, Msg Networks will showcase a legendary woman in sports, including the University of Hawaii’s historic volleyball team from the early ‘70s and tennis icon Billie Jean King, for example, while Syfy is airing a series of autobiographical video shorts about female animators.

HBO Max, meanwhile, will debut a limited series about best-selling author Isabel Allende and a documentary about powerhouse Tina Turner. The streamer also curated several lists of their titles that feature unforgettable, on-screen women characters, such as Michaela Coel’s “Chewing Gum” and “I May Destroy You.”

Ovation is also recognizing Women’s History Month through a curated on-demand programming lineup, which includes documentaries “Beyonce: Queen B” and “Dolly Parton: Queen of Country” and episodes of “Inside the Actors Studio” and “Stars of the Silver Screen.

Post-Production Is Thriving Thanks to Technology; Will the Remote Workforce Grow After the Pandemic Subsides?
Image
Producers at Levity Live consider themselves lucky. The shows they were working on — like Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible,” Adult Swim’s “Black Jesus” and Hgtv’s “House Hunters” — had all wrapped principal photography by March when the pandemic hit. There was only one problem: Post-production needed to be completed.

But the company was also prepared. In the weeks before the coronavirus forced the closure of many offices throughout the entertainment industry, Levity Live preordered huge hard drives to transfer more than 520Tb of footage per day that enabled it to move its 140 post workers from the office to their homes.

John Bravakis, executive VP and chief operating officer at Triage Entertainment, a production company owned by Levity Live that also produces Ovation’s “Inside the Actors Studio,” notes that early planning — along with the good fortune to not have any serialized reality shows in its pipeline — meant Levity and...

Ellen Burstyn is the Oscar-winning actress who serves as co-president of the Actors Studio and has been co-host of Inside the Actors Studio since James Lipton retired in 2019.

First of all, I knew him as a writer. He wrote that incredible book Exaltation of Larks, so I knew him from that. And then he came to the Actors Studio to the playwright-directors unit after Lee Strasberg had died and I learned that he was so much more than a writer. He produced, he directed, he studied ballet dancing and had been a choreographer at one point.

Jim came up with the idea of ...

Why Bradley Cooper Was James Lipton’s Most Memorable Guest on ‘Inside the Actors Studio’ (Video)
James Lipton at an event for From Paris with Love (2010)
The late James Lipton was asked in 2017 who among the many legendary stars and thespians he’s interviewed over the years was his absolute favorite interview, and it wasn’t some Old Hollywood icon but Bradley Cooper.

Cooper, it turns out, was a student in the Actors Studio and auditioned with Lipton when the “Inside the Actors Studio” host was Dean of the school for 10 years. Lipton had personally accepted Cooper into the program. Both he and Cooper got emotional at seeing how far Cooper had come in his career since his days in the acting school.

“The night that one of my students has achieved so much that he or she comes back and sits down in that chair next to me will be the night I’ve waited for since we started this thing 23 years, and it turned out to be Bradley Cooper,” Lipton told Larry King in 2017. “I auditioned him.
