Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn are notable players in the indie film landscape. They create work that defies traditional classification while also honoring the past. Emerging from the avant-garde scene, their films, like L for Leisure and Two Plains and a Fancy, show a propensity for challenging genre conventions and mixing surrealism with self-aware humor.
Each project serves as a canvas where they explore the absurdities of human experience, creating narratives that are as much about the journey as they are about the destination. The medium becomes an essential part of the narrative voice, a signature move that defines their cinematic identity, as evidenced by their development as filmmakers.

Cult filmmakers Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn have made a career out of genre homages without ever losing touch with their own distinct aesthetic. Their 2015 feature “L for Leisure” directly riffed on the ’90s indie film culture and 2018’s “Two Plains and a Fancy” offered a deconstructed take on the Western genre — but no matter what genre they take on, trademarks like 16mm film and dreamy synth scores mark every project as distinctly theirs.
Their latest feature, “Dream Team,” is no exception. A send-up of basic cable softcore thrillers like “Silk Stalkings,” the film presents six episodes of a fictional TV show that moves with the urgency of an imaginary writers room that knew it had 27 episodes to fill. Storylines seem to come and go at their own leisure as the “show” alternates between solving crimes, alluding to sexiness that we never quite see, and fixating on ambient aquatic imagery.

Partners Sideshow Pictures and Janus Films open All We Imagine As Light on Friday and will follow the playbook for Drive My Car, the indie distributor’s first film that began a slow rollout about this time in 2021, collecting awards, nice grosses and finishing with an International Picture Oscar win amid a flurry of nominations. Payal Kapadia’s film, among the best reviewed of the year, was snubbed by India for an Oscar selection. Its distributor has something to say about that and is campaigning for other key categories.
Also this weekend, comedy A Real Pain with Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin from Searchlight Pictures hits 900-plus screens in a major expansion. Sony Pictures Classics’ Saorsie Ronan starrer The Outrun, which opened in early October and was down to 19 screens, is jumping back to 200 by popular demand, which is nice to hear.

Underground filmmaking duo Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn aren’t exactly honing a style with their new feature “Dream Team,” their fourth in 15 years. That would imply that there’s some fully realized form that their offhand humor and nonsense divergences are working toward. The film, which is receiving a limited theatrical release in New York and L.A. on Nov. 15, starts on firm ground, with a familiar buddy-detective premise that many a late-night genre junk programmer has used as a sturdy narrative foundation. Unlike those commercial efforts, “Dream Team” hardly has continuity, much less narrative build, top of mind, instead reshaping itself every few minutes with a new surrealistic flourish, and seemingly no particular destination mapped out. Playful as that can be, the film often comes across like a private joke.

In Whitney Horn and Lev Kalman’s farcical Dream Team, No (Esther Garrel) and Chase (Alex Zhang Hungtai), a pair of Interpol detectives as feckless as they are sexy, investigate a spate of surreal murders in Mexico. In this case, the murder weapon, if not the prime suspect, is a coral that emits a roseate, venomous gas. Disciples, apparently, of the Agent Cooper school of policework, these soft-boiled detectives try to solve the mystery through a combination of dream analysis, meditation, hitting the gym, getting seduced by their informants, and pondering the nature of consciousness. If all this sounds a little inane, that’s by design.

Imagine it's the 90s, in the early days of wide home computer use, with dial-up models, compact discs as the main mode of music listening, and you've fallen asleep in front of your television. You wake up in a dark hour and images of beaches and modern dance and a strange pair of investigators sitting on a beach trying to figure out why scientists are dying mysteriously. Perhaps you think you're still asleep, watching this strange, visually intriguing and sometimes not quite coherent story, but you can't help but be drawn in. You might be watching Dream Team, the latest lo-fi, lo-budget speculative experimental work by American filmmakers Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn. Using 16mm film, the film is a strangely comic (not dark exactly,...

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is a highly-anticipated release, and it's not hard to see why. As the first original Mario & Luigi entry in almost 9 years, the game serves as a long-awaited comeback for a series whose future was left uncertain following the closure of developer AlphaDream in 2019. It's certainly a monumental occasion for fans of Mario & Luigi. However, when looking further, it becomes clear that Brothership could be a far more important release than it first seems.
After a rough few years, Mario RPGs have seen a much-deserved renaissance on the Nintendo Switch. Remakes of beloved Mario RPG classics in the past year have served as a way to recapture the magic of this franchise and to show the strengths that these games have to offer. Cult filmmakers Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn are finally getting their well-deserved spotlight to celebrate their third film “Dream Team.”
The duo, who previously directed “L For Leisure” and “Two Plains and a Fancy,” write, direct, and produce “Dream Team” which follows two Interpol agents as they uncover an international, interspecies mystery involving psychic coral, a sexually suggestive scientist, and an invisible coworker with a very vindictive streak.

After being dormant for nearly nine years, the Mario & Luigi series finally has a shot at revival. Mario & Luigi: Brothership has a lot to live up to as the series' first original entry in almost a decade. Not only must Brothership continue to uphold the series' upbeat tone and offbeat humor that made the previous entries so beloved, but it must be able to evolve the series and take the Mario Bros. in a bold new direction.
The release of a new Mario & Luigi game is a miracle. After the underwhelming response to Paper Jam, Mario & Luigi's last original entry, the series would receive two remakes of the Bros.' earlier outings that underperformed in sales. Couple that with the news of original developer AlphaDream going bankrupt, and it would have been safe to assume this series was gone for good. The Office writers doubled as actors, adding depth to the characters and humor of the show. Bj Novak wrote and acted in the series, contributing to memorable episodes and ongoing success. Mindy Kaling went on to create and star in hit shows after her time on The Office, showcasing her talent.
The talent pool of The Office writers also includes several actors on the show, a fact that lends itself to the sitcoms hilarious character-driven humor. NBC's The Office first premiered in 2005. Using the mockumentary format, The Office followed the lives of a large cast of characters in their professional and personal lives at the fictional paper company Dunder Mifflin. The show was noted for its character development throughout, a fact that was no doubt helped by some of The Office writers also being cast members.

Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 8 spoilers promise danger for Danny and Baez, thanks to an old enemy.
This will likely bring on the suspense, but will it also finally push their relationship over the line from friendship to something else?

Still, with Blue Bloods getting close to its midseason finale (the rest of the final season will air in the fall), the evolution of this relationship would get fans talking!

Amanda Waller's heinous decisions are driven by fear, humanizing her character. Waller's fear makes her actions all the scarier, revealing her as an unhinged villain. The new backstory in Suicide Squad: Dream Team #2 recontextualizes Waller's motivations.
Amanda Waller has finally been humanized despite being Suicide Squad's harshest leader. Harley Quinn and Dreamer's rivalry may evolve into a romantic relationship, despite initial negative tension. With the shutdown of the Nintendo eShop imminent, many worthwhile Nintendo 3Ds exclusives will become unavailable, or at least very hard to find. The eShop closure will affect both 3Ds and Wii U users, furthering the discontinuation trend that began in 2019 with the end of the Wii Shop Channel.
It will unfortunately be a bit harder for players to buy games, as the 3Ds eShop recently stopped accepting credit cards. Thankfully, players can get around this by linking their Nintendo Network ID - the identifier for the 3Ds - with their Nintendo account. After linking, they can add funds to their Nintendo account and purchase 3Ds titles. Luckily, there's still time to pick up these standout exclusives players before the Nintendo eShop closes on March 27.

Three years ago, Spain’s independent TV production sector was heading toward a crisis with ever lower profit margins. Cut to 2019, and Spain is enjoying a golden age of drama series production, while consolidating as a global production center.
One major factor in the turnaround has been Movistar Plus, the pay TV unit of Telefonica. It has made the biggest push into high-end original production of any telecom in Europe — just as U.S. and European telcos scramble to compete for content with media companies.
The first results, at home and abroad, of Telefonica’s content drive are now in.
One is a turnaround. In the fourth quarter of 2016, Movistar Plus lost 54,000 pay-tv subscribers. After its first three original series had been released, Movistar Plus added 80,700 in Q4 2017. Since July 2017, releasing 22 original or returning series through September, Movistar Plus has posted eight consecutive quarters of steady pay TV household growth,...

What We Do in the Shadows Episode 8
What We Do in the Shadows, episode 8, "Citizenship," continues to expose vampire myths to the sunlight of mocking documentation. Although, tonight they only do this in short bursts, not the fully lethal way the series dispensed with Baron Afanas (Doug Jones) after his night on the town.
"Citizenship" opens with Jenna, played by Beanie Feldstein who costars in Olivia Wilde's directorial debut Booksmart, moving between worlds. The young Staten Island community college student is becoming untethered from her human limitations only to get stuck in vampiric ones. Feldstein looks like she's having a ball as she undergoes the indignities of this dual citizenship.

Dave Cleeve and Brendan Pinches.
Who needs film schools? Not Brendan Pinches, whose documentary about an anonymous female street artist who paints portraits of train commuters won the main prize at Tropfest in Sydney on Saturday night.
The self-taught Pinches wrote, directed and produced Be You T. Fool, his first ever short, collaborating with Dave Cleeve as the editor and Dop.
Eric Bana, who presented the winner’s trophy, said the judges were unanimous in their decision and described the film as “entertaining, well-made, inspiring and emotional: It had everything.”
Now 32, Pinches spent the last 10 years working in sales and marketing for a family engineering company. He is moving to a part-time role at the company as he is embarking on a Masters of Film and TV at Vca.

Rutger Hauer will play an old-time gangster in “Break,” a London- and Beijing-set movie about an up-and-coming snooker player. The picture will also feature cameos from some of the sport’s big-name players, including Ireland’s Ken Doherty, China’s Liang Wenbo, and Britain’s Jack Lisowski.
The “Break” producers have teamed with world snooker’s official association. They will film scenes at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, which is considered the home of professional snooker. The climax of the film is set during the World Snooker Championship final, which takes place at the venue.
Hauer is Ray, owner of a run-down snooker hall and an old school villain.
