As far as cosy, feel-good British films go, I Swear begins in irreverent form. As John Davidson (Robert Aramayo) lines up to receive his MBE from Queen Elizabeth II, his nerves get the better of him. “Fuck the Queen!” he blurts out. It’s a deliciously iconoclastic moment, and one that serves both sides of this delightful film’s two wolves: the warm-and-fuzzy teatime template that it appears to follow, and the involuntarily foul-mouthed subject that it tracks.
Directed by Kirk Jones (whose cosy feel-good credentials include 1998’s Waking Ned), I Swear tells the true story of a Scottish man living with Tourette syndrome, at a time when public awareness...

Based on the real life of Tourette Syndrome campaigner John Davidson, who takes an exec credit here, “I Swear” is a biopic about a man who came of age in 1980s Scotland at a time when Tourette Syndrome was misunderstood and barely acknowledged, leading him to experience everything from difficulties dating to horrific physical violence.
The “I” in “I Swear” is played by “The Rings of Power” star Robert Aramayo, while the second part of the title is a play on the involuntary expletives prompted by his character’s condition, as well as an oath he has trouble with in a key courtroom scene. Written and directed by Kirk Jones (“Waking Ned Devine”), the film wrestles enthusiastically and mostly successfully with the potential pitfalls of making a funny yet respectful project about a condition that sometimes lends itself to laughter, even as it wreaks havoc with Davidson’s life in serious ways.

A new stage musical based on the 1998 film comedy Waking Ned Devine is being developed with The Color Purple director John Doyle, Come From Away book writer David Hein and Oscar winning Once composers and lyricists Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard.
A production timeline for the Broadway-bound musical will be announced later.
In a statement, Doyle said, “Waking Ned Devine attracted me as a funny, heartwarming musical that serves as a timely reminder of the value of community. The inhabitants of a small Irish village working together, overcoming self-interest and greed, all for the good of their families and neighbors.”
Doyle continued, “No one could be better than Markéta and Glen to bring out the musicality in these Celtic characters and David is unmatched in his ability to find the heart and humanity in such a story.”

There is a very specific kind of UK comedy-drama that's quietly funny, with well-developed characters but somewhat low stakes, and an accessible and (eventually) uplifting narrative that nonetheless feels very authentic. Waking Ned, Gregory's Girl, The Full Monty, Billy Elliot, Educating Rita, Local Hero, Another Year, Philomena — you know exactly the type; they're the definition of crowd-pleasers. The Ballad of Wallis Island is a very welcome addition to that niche subgenre of tiny comforting gems hailing from across the pond. It also gives lovable co-creator and co-star Tim Key one of his biggest spotlights, and boy, it's well-deserved.
The Ballad of Wallis Island is based on a short film from nearly 20 years ago, by the same writers and stars here (Tom Basden and the aforementioned TIm Key). It has a pretty perfect premise — a lottery winner spends some of his riches to hire his favorite band for a private concert on his island,...

Fionnula Flanagan, the veteran Irish actor, has been a star of stage and screen for more than six decades, earning Tony nominations for her theatre work, a nod from the Screen Actors Guild for Waking Ned, a Saturn award for The Others and a voice acting trophy for Song of the Sea – as well as accolades for the cult TV series Lost.
This means she has spent a lot of time in the US – in fact, she’s lived there since 1968. The home she shared in the Hollywood Hills with her late husband, Garrett O’Connor, was well known for its parties – despite O’Connor, an eminent psychiatrist, being the first president of the Betty Ford Institute.

Writer/director Mike Flanagan shares several recommendations for uplifting movies. Flanagan is best known for his work in the horror genre with films such as Hush, Oculus, and Ouija: Origin of Evil. He saw success with Netflix series, including The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and Fall of the House of Usher. He also adapted the Stephen King novels Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game. He has three more King adaptations in the works with The Life of Chuck, Carrie, and the genre-crossing epic The Dark Tower. In addition to those, Flanagan is busy with a new Exorcist movie.
Although Flanagan's career largely focuses on horror, the director has said his future work will end on a hopeful note, despite some previous bleak endings. Flanagan stated that when his children eventually watch his work he does not want to leave them with a sense of hopelessness and that "no matter how dark a story gets,...

You may not understand half of the things the characters are saying when you watch the Irish comedy that is Waking Ned Devine, but that's part of its charm. This wild black farce (originally titled Waking Ned) follows the tale of how a small town off the coast of Ireland committed fraud against the lotto after their friend passed away upon winning 6.8 million. Not only is the character of Ned Devine a dead man more fascinating than many characters we see in most films, but Waking Ned Devine's commentary around how we face our elder years is a heartwarming and poignant sentiment that never feels silly, despite the silly actions our characters, like Jackie (Ian Bannen) and Michael (David Kelly), commit. However, despite the at times hard-to-hear dialogue, the cozy community that Waking Ned Devine creates will make you wish you could live there, even if you couldn't join...

The thought of winning a lottery jackpot on sites like Lottoland Lottery and Casino has crossed the minds of a lot of people. You see, part of what makes the lottery such a thrilling event is the uncertainty of the outcome and the inexplicable joy of being the lucky winner, which makes it a perfect plot for film producers.
Some of the movies about winning the lottery are based on true events, while others are based on mere fiction. However, what stands out in these movies is how producers exaggerate the events to make them more entertaining. This write-up reviews four lottery movies that’ll quench your thirst for thrilling cinematic experience.

When the nominations for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are announced in January, there appear to be four locks in the best ensemble category. “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” currently lead the Gold Derby odds, with “The Color Purple” next in line. It’s quite possible that these five casts are the ones that will ultimately be chosen by the SAG Awards. However, there’s another film steadily hovering in sixth place. And it’s one that we should not ignore.
Here are five reasons why Amazon Studios’ “Air” might make its way into the guild’s best ensemble playoff.
1. It has the fab four making up its core.
Matt Damon. Ben Affleck. Jason Bateman. And, of course, Viola Davis. Those are huge names in the acting industry, and the fusion of the four may prove irresistible to the guild’s nominating committee.

Restarted negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that could mean an end to the actors strike have raised hopes for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Oct. 31-Nov, 5 in Santa Monica. What everyone is hoping for is, in the words of one leading indie producer, that “we can all get back to business.”
Even without a new SAG-AFTRA deal, there is a healthy batch of new titles on offer — a mix of international features and U.S. indie films that have secured interim agreements from the union to begin production. “In the last few days we’ve seen a waterfall of lineups,” says Nadiia Zaionchkovska, Cco of newly-founded Ukraine distributor Green Light Films, which will be making its market debut at this year’s AFM. “Lots of theatrical films, lots either in post or in pre-production, ready to shoot in the first...

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Hollywood writer and director Kirk Jones is to helm Vertigo Films’ buzzy upcoming drama series You’ve Been Trumped, marking his first foray into television drama.
The Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee and What to Expect When You’re Expecting director will write and direct the four part series, which is based on Anthony Baxter’s award-winning 2011 documentary of the same name about the small Scottish community who stood up to Donald Trump and his golf course development.
Jones has completed the scripts, which will likely employ the black humour and deep-rooted emotional sensibility of Baxter’s doc.

The drama, based on Anthony Baxter’s 2011 documentary, tells the story of a small Scottish village who took on the then-reality TV star when he tried to build a golf course in a nature reserve. Jones, who has previously written and directed “Waking Ned” and “Everybody’s Fine,” is also writing the project while Baxter will serve as a creative consultant.
“There was a reason why the world’s media was drawn to this story in 2006 and why there was such a determined effort to prevent Anthony Baxter’s excellent documentary of the same name, being released in 2011,” said Jones. “A special site of scientific interest was stripped of its status and a community of decent people faced an unwanted aggressor. This is a story that needs to be...

Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple bidders, Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald’s Counterbalance Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, where the company is under an overall deal, have acquired rights to Marc Fisher’s Washington Post article “Powerball mystery: Someone in this tiny town won $731 million. Now everyone wants a piece of it.” The story will be developed into a half-hour comedy and a search for a writer is currently underway.
The article, published in mid-July, chronicles the aftermath of a Powerball ticket sold in the small town of Lonacoming, MD, winning $731 million. Maryland is one of seven states that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous, and the lucky Lonacoming group, who call themselves “Power Pack,” took advantage of that when they eventually claimed their reward four months after hitting the jackpot. The news turns this small town upside down as the residents...

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are likely to look a lot different this year. Even with loosened restrictions on movie theaters, indoor dining, and other places frequented before the pandemic, bars have yet to return to their full glory, and if you’re the type to stay home, a movie marathon is a low-key way to spend the holiday.
To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, we rounded up a collection of films that are streaming now on Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max. If you’re not already signed up with one (or more) of these streaming platforms, they all offer subscriptions at affordable prices. For example, Disney+ and Hulu have...

Hey, remember when they released that picture of the CGI movie Sonic the Hedgehog and it was so freakish and unnerving that animators had to work overtime to fix it? Anywho, Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Hulu this month.
The heroic blue hedgehog who just wants to go fast is far from the only exciting new film or TV show coming to Hulu in February 2021. The library titles are unusually packed this month. In addition to Sonic, the sublimely goofy Mars Attacks!, 2020 horror film Possessor, and the first six Star Trek films all arrive on Feb. 1. Later on in the month are Antebellum (Feb. 5) and Nomadland (Feb. 19).
It’s a good thing that the library titles are strong because Hulu isn’t brining many originals of note to the table in February 2021. Into the Dark continues on its spooky mission with the Valentine-centric Tentacles dropping on Feb. 12. That will...

There are people who will tell you that John Patrick Shanley’s “Wild Mountain Thyme” traffics in bumper-to-bumper Irish stereotypes, but those people will be a bit off the mark — “stereotypes” is a wildly inadequate word for how this fable-esque romantic comedy renders the quirks and customs of life in the verdant farmlands of Ireland’s County Mayo. This sometimes enchanting (but always demented) soda farl of banter and blarney couldn’t be a broader caricature of Irish culture if it were written by the Keebler elves and directed by a pint of Guinness.
We’re talking about a movie so in love with its own lucky charms that it makes “Waking Ned Devine” feel like “In the Name of the Father” by comparison. Think that’s overstating the case? The National Leprechaun Museum of Ireland responded to the trailer by tweeting “Even we think this is a bit much.

“Ted Lasso,” Apple TV+’s latest original comedy, is
kind of like a hybrid of the baseball comedy “Major League” and those
folksy “aren’t Brits delightful” comedies of the late ‘90s like “Waking Ned
Devine” and “The Full Monty.” It gets most of its initial mileage
from the affable charm of its star, Jason Sudeikis, who finds a way to
turn the title character into someone who is genuinely likeable instead of
merely playing aw shucks heartland stereotypes.

“Thank you, Sydney, for this loving tribute. You know, I remembered at some point that Robbie had called me around 1 am my time to say that he was up and getting ready to leave (and he sounded fine). So I realized he must have been awake and not asleep when he died so I e-mailed the police officer who found him and he confirmed to me that Robbie was on the floor and not in bed. A wise and wistful love letter from one remarkable character actor to another, John Carroll Lynch’s “Lucky” returns 90-year-old Harry Dean Stanton to the dusty desert environs he shuffled through in 1984’s “Paris, Texas,” and offers the rawboned legend one of the best roles he’s had since. Beginning as a broad comedy before blossoming into a wry meditation on death and all the things we leave behind (a transition that kicks into gear when one of Stanton’s old friends shows up and steals the show), Lynch’s directorial debut is a wisp of a movie, blowing across the screen like a tumbleweed, but it’s also the rare portrait of mortality that’s both fun and full of life.
Co-written by actors Drago Sumonja and Logan Sparks (who worked as Stanton’s assistant on “Big Love”), “Lucky” introduces us to its curmudgeonly title character with the kind...

With each new month comes the same old lesson about catching all your favorite movies before they leave Netflix. If you haven’t watched The Naked Gun yet, you should do that is what I’m saying. But what do you get in return? A lot actually! We get the original series Fuller House and Judd Apatow’s Love. They’re also adding the final season of Mad Men, the first season of Better Call Saul, and one of the most popular teen movies of all time, Cruel Intentions.
On the Amazon Prime front, check out below to see what you’ll be able to stream for free and what’s going to have a cost. Let’s watch!

February can be kind of a pill -- it's dark, it's cold, you have to deal with or avoid Valentine's Day -- but at least it gives you a good excuse to stay home and binge-watch. Amazon just listed its February offerings for Prime Video streaming and Amazon Video purchase. For example, fans of "The Americans" can steam Season 3 (yay!), and you can check out Amazon Studios' first-major film, "Chi-Raq," from director Spike Lee.
It was recently announced that Prime Members can now add Showtime, Starz, and more video subscriptions to their Prime memberships for $8.99 per month. In February, members can use that feature to see the new seasons of "Billions," "Shameless," and "Black Sails," among others.

Last May, it was announced that My Big Fat Greek Wedding stars Nia Vardalos and John Corbett will reprise their roles as Toula an Ian in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. We haven't heard anything about the sequel since then, but today, Universal Pictures has released the first trailer and photos, while announcing the sequel will hit theaters on March 25, 2016. That release date puts My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 up against the highly-anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, although it's unlikely there is much crossover between both of these wildly different groups of fans.
