Corey Yuen, the actor, action choreographer and director of “So Close” and “Doa: Dead or Alive,” died in 2022, the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers confirmed to Variety.

Local and English-language reports say that Yuen died of Covid-19 on an undisclosed date in Hong Kong. He was born on Feb. 15, 1951 as Ying Gang-ming.

His death was initially kept private at the request of his family. But on Monday, the news was revealed on Chinese-language social media by fellow action star Jackie Chan, who paid tribute to Yuen and others in the industry who had died.

Yuen and Chan were contemporaries and trained together with Sammo Hung Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu and Yuen Biao at the Peking Opera School. Together, they were sometimes referred to as the Seven Little Fortunes or The Lucky Seven and made their mark during the heyday of Hong Kong cinema from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

Conrad Palmisano, a veteran Hollywood stuntman, stunt coordinator and director, died on Jan. 10. He was 75.

Palmisano’s stunt credits include over 200 projects across several decades. He worked on a wide range of films from “The Jerk” to “21 Jump Street.” He served as stunt coordinator on “Red Dragon” (2002), “No Strings Attached” (2011), “My Sister’s Keeper,” “Romeo Must Die” (2000), “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) and “Weekend at Bernie’s” (1989), among many other projects. Andrzej Bartkowiak got his start in the entertainment industry working as a cinematographer, working on such films as Terms of Endearment, Prizzi’s Honor, Twins, Falling Down, Speed, Species, Dante’s Peak, The Devil’s Advocate, U.S. Marshals, Lethal Weapon 4, Thirteen Days, and Trespass. But back at the turn of the century he also got into directing, working mainly in the action genre: Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Maximum Impact, Dead Reckoning. His most well-known movie, for better or worse, may be the action horror video game adaptation Doom. Now Deadline has announced that Bartkowiak is treading back into horror territory, as he has signed on to direct the supernatural thriller The Dire Wolf.

Coming our way from Steelyard Pictures, The Dire Wolf has a screenplay written by Ry Cook and is expected to start filming in New Mexico soon, aiming for a 2024 release.

The director of films including Doom and Romeo Must Die, Andrzej Bartkowiak will next be directing a supernatural horror movie titled The Dire Wolf, Deadline reports today.

Steelyard Pictures is the company behind The Dire Wolf, releasing sometime next year.

Deadline details, “The film tells the story of Hank Whitmore, a sharp and stubborn New Mexican sheriff who aligns with the Navajo Nation when a series of supernatural events threatens his family, his town, and his way of life.”

Ry Cook wrote the screenplay for The Dire Wolf.

Leone Marucci will produce. Marucci tells Deadline, “American cinema has long wrestled with our native culture’s spiritual connection to the natural world. The extinct Dire Wolf was [once] indigenous to North America. Today the wolf spirit symbolizes trust of intuition, guardianship, and the courage to walk one’s own path.

“We’re thrilled to enlist such a renowned filmmaker to bring The Dire Wolf to the screen.

Melvin “Magoo” Barcliff, one half of the rap duo Timbaland & Magoo who had a hit “Up Jumps Da Boogie” from their platinum 1997 debut album Welcome to Our World, has died at 50. Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley and others confirmed the news on social media but did not give details.

Timbaland & Magoo met as teenagers in Norfolk, Va and broke out with “Up Jumps Da Boogie,” which featured Missy Elliott and Aaliyah and reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It made the Top 5 of the R&b chart as the album rose to No. 33. Another single from the disc, “Clock Strikes,” reached the pop Top 40 and No. 24 on the R&b tally.

The African American Film Critics Association revealed on Friday the artists, actors and TV shows that will be honored at the 5th annual Aafca TV Honors.

Among the special achievement recipients this year are classic TV legend Marla Gibbs, known for sitcoms 227 and The Jeffersons, who will receive Aafca’s Legend Award. Delroy Lindo, known for his roles in Unprisoned, Da 5 Bloods, Crooklyn and Romeo Must Die, will receive the Legacy Award.

On Friday night, DMX was rushed to a New York Hospital, after reportedly suffering a heart attack, following a drug overdose.

Born Earl Simmons, the 50-year-old rapper is said to be in the critical care unit of a hospital in White Plains.

TMZ first reported the news. Subsequently, Billboard followed up with the rapper’s representatives, confirming that he is hospitalized.

Sources close to Dmx told TMZ that the rapper’s Od occurred at his residence, near 11 Pm.

One unnamed source said that the rapper has “some brain activity,” while another said that he is currently in a “vegetative state.”

At this time, no further details have been provided, with regard to his condition.

Over the years, Dmx has been known for his battles with substance abuse, having checked into rehab a number of times. He last entered rehab in 2019, following a year-long sentence at a West Virginia prison for federal tax evasion.

Anthony Anderson’s Hollywood career has been consistently characterized by successful pivots, from scene-stealing comedic roles to searing dramatic turns to effervescent hosting duties and many disparate points in between. HBO Max has a lot to offer in August, with titles to look forward to including the premiere of a brand new Seth Rogen movie called “An American Pickle” on Aug. 6, and Christopher Nolan’s 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight” out Aug. 1.

The nascent streaming service also shares content with HBO, with new films coming like “Jojo Rabbit” out Aug. 1, “Birds of Prey” out Aug. 15, “Richard Jewell” out Aug. 8, and “Queen & Slim,” out Aug. 22. The upcoming series “Lovecraft County,” which mixes fact and fantasy and takes place in 1950s Jim Crow America, arrives Aug. 16.

Leaving throughout the month include, tragically, all eight “Harry Potter” films, which will be gone after Aug. 25. Other absolute classics like “Good Will Hunting,” “You’ve Got Mail,” and both “Kill Bill” movies will be gone after Aug. 31, so watch them while you can.
