Although Matthew Fox is a fan-favorite Lost cast member, the star once took on a less favorable role in Alex Cross (2012). As the third installment in the Alex Cross franchise, the Rob Cohen-directed movie performed so poorly that it significantly impacted the entire franchise.
Alex Cross saw Fox play a sadistic serial killer named Picasso, drawing the attention of psychologist Dr. Alex Cross, played by Tyler Perry. The film will stream for free on Tubi starting April 1.
The film was considered a reboot, with Perry taking over from previous Alex Cross actor Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. Unfortunately, the plans for the Alex Cross reboot were short-lived. The film received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and audiences. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Alex Cross has a mere 11% approval rating from critics, and out of over 25,000 audience reviews, only 47% are positive. The consensus was that,...

Morgan Freeman's 2001 Alex Cross thriller will have a new streaming home next month. Along Came a Spider arrives on Paramount+ on Feb. 1.
A sequel to 1997's Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider saw Freeman reprise his role as detective Alex Cross alongside Jay O. Sanders as FBI agent Kyle Craig. The film was adapted from James Patterson's 1993 novel of the same name but changed key plot points. In the movie, forensic psychologist and author Alex Cross's retirement from the police force is short-lived when the daughter of a U.S. senator is kidnapped from her private school. As Cross digs deeper into the girl's disappearance, he learns there are many more layers to the kidnapping than he once thought.

It's always impressive when a movie manages to elicit genuine emotional distress from audiences, but it's even more impressive when they manage to accomplish this on a small scale. Most of the greatest thrillers of all time, from Seven and Children of Men all the way to Chinatown and North By Northwest are absolutely massive in scale and feature intense and meticulous world building across cities, states, and countries. While these films are huge in scale, they sit on the thriller genre Mount Rushmore because they manage to make massive worlds feel small, claustrophobic and isolated through ingenious tension creation. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are small-scale films like Coherence and Green Room that manage to feel huge and sprawling despite their mostly singular setting.

Cross is among the most well-known series by acclaimed author James Patterson. The story follows a detective whose wife is murdered and who is set on solving increasingly difficult crimes with the hopes of solving the one that haunts him.
Starring Aldis Hodge, the series has received acclaim and praise from fans, critics, and the author Patterson, who praised the show's writers for creating an original story. Aldis Hodge has been a clear success as it's a faithful adaption of the character, something which Patterson has always protected when Hollywood has come knocking - as it has previously, but with the ask that Alex Cross be changed from Black to white.

It's always nice to hear a story where someone tells Hollywood to go f*ck itself. Which is, quite literally, what James Patterson did when executives asked him to re-write his iconic Alex Cross character as a white man. And now Cross television star Aldis Hodge — who plays the titular character — is speaking out about what it means to have kept Alex Cross a Black man.
Speaking with BuzzFeed, Hodge explained that he was "shocked, impressed, and proud" when he heard the author of the wildly successful Alex Cross novels was asked by some Hollywood executives to sign a seven-figure deal — but only if he changed the character's race to white.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month, Patterson explained the story as such:
"Here's an interesting thing about the Hollywood 'Cross' stuff. When I wrote the first Alex Cross book, I didn't have a lot of money and Hollywood came calling — knock,...

Scott Hicks' 2001 supernatural drama "Hearts in Atlantis" should have been a big hit. Based on a novel by Stephen King, the movie blended the author's bent for 1950s and 1960s nostalgia with his knack for mysterious fantasy. Told in flashback, "Hearts" tells the story of a 12-year-old named Bobby (played by eventual "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin) who is largely neglected by his self-absorbed mother (Hope Davis) and who spends his idle summer days with his two best friends, Carol (Meeka Boorem) and Sully (Will Rothhaar). To make ends meet, Bobby's mom takes on a lodger named Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) and Bobby soon learns that Ted has some kind of psychic power. He can read minds, and make objects float.
Ted explains calmly to Bobby that he has to keep the powers secret, as he is being pursued by people he calls "Low Men." Unusually, Ted's superpowers aren't the center of the film's plot,...

His most popular character is Alex Cross, a brilliant detective and criminal psychologist, who appeared in the 1993 novel Along Came a Spider. Beginning with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009), Anton Yelchin played Ensign Pavel Chekov in three Star Trek films before his tragic and untimely death in 2016. Following the James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) of the alternate Kelvin timeline, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek films re-energized the Star Trek movie franchise, introducing countless new fans to the series. Warning! This article contains spoilers for Cross season 1.A missing story from Cross season 1 serves as the perfect reminder to watch a divisive Morgan Freeman movie that came out over two decades ago. Featuring Aldis Hodge as its titular detective character, Cross season 1 unfolds like a typical crime thriller, where its protagonist races against time to catch a serial killer while fighting his own demons. However, despite dabbling with many familiar tropes and ideas, Cross establishes itself as a worthy competitor to other gripping detective shows on Amazon Prime Video with its well-timed twists and strong performances.
Interestingly, Cross is based on James Patterson's Alex Cross books. However, unlike most other thriller book adaptations like Jack Ryan and Reacher on Amazon Prime Video, Cross avoids being loyal to its source material. Instead, it adopts an original storyline while only borrowing a few narrative and character beats from the original books.

Prime Video's Cross is the latest adaptation of the hit thriller novels, but just how different is the series from the original Morgan Freeman movies? Prime's Cross cast Aldis Hodge as the title character, who is seemingly doomed to chase down endlessly creative serial killers. While the James Patterson books also received a movie adaptation with 2012's Alex Cross (starring Tyler Perry), the Morgan Freeman movies are by far the most famous adaptations.
Freeman fronted both Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, which adapted the first two Patterson novels. An Alex Cross franchise felt like a natural move for Freeman after Se7en's success, but the reception to Along Came a Spider saw him move on from the character. It's over 20 years since Freeman last played the character and the Cross TV series is a total reinvention of the franchise for a new audience.

The first episode of Cross has already ruled out re-adapting one of the James Patterson books by repeating a cool Reacher trick. The Cross show cast Aldis Hodge in the title role, inheriting the character from Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry. Surprisingly, Prime Video's show isn't adapting any of the novels and instead picks elements from the source material mixed with an original storyline. Even showrunner Ben Watkins confessed to TVLine that this was a "risky" approach, considering how many fans the books have.
Regardless, Cross is currently rated "Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with a 70% rating, with Hodge being singled out for praise. Another element receiving positive feedback is Ryan Eggold as serial killer Ed Ramsey/The Fanboy, who recreates famous killers using his victims as a "template" before killing them. This makes him a perfect villain for Cross, as he's a "fan" of Alex's past cases and even namechecks...

The entertainment industry sure knows how to make offers that are too good to say no to in terms of money. Responsible for the bestselling crime thriller series, James Patterson was approached by Hollywood to bring his characters to life, but he said no.

Aldis Hodge explains why he did not watch the Alex Cross movies before taking on Cross. The new Prime Video series is based on James Patterson's Alex Cross novel series, chronicling the story of the titular protagonist who uses his forensic psychology skills to analyze killers' minds to track down murderers. Despite borrowing many narrative beats from James Patterson's Alex Cross books, Amazon's Cross significantly drifts away from its source material in more ways than one. From its early moments, Amazon's Cross draws subtle references to its source material. Prime Video has become the top spot for iconic book-to-tv adaptations featuring iconic characters. After the success of shows like Bosch, Jack Ryan, and Reacher, it makes perfect sense that their latest adaption is Cross, an 8-episode series featuring the classic James Patterson character, Alex Cross, played by Aldis Hodge. The brilliant detective first appeared back in 1993 with the novel Along Came a Spider. That book, along with Patterson's 1995 bestseller Kiss the Girls, were adapted into movies with Morgan Freeman starring in the role of Alex Cross. While those films were directly adapted from the books, the new Prime Video series is actually not based on any of Pattersons books.

Cross premiered on Prime Video, so do critics think this new drama is worth watching?
Created by James Patterson for his debut 1993 novel Along Came A Spider, Alex Cross has become one of the greatest heroes in fiction. Patterson has written over 30 novels featuring the detective, who specializes in tracking anything from serial killers to even government conspiracies, using his insight into criminals for an edge.
The character has been adapted to movies with Morgan Freeman in adaptations of Spider and Kiss the Girls and Tyler Perry in 2012's Alex Cross. Now, Prime Video has a new series set with Aldis Hodge as Cross, who's overcoming the murder of his wife while tracking a new killer.

James Patterson's best-selling book series, Cross, has made its small-screen debut on Amazon Prime Video, and the mystery thriller has already been renewed for a second season. The series concerns the titular Alex Cross, a detective in Washington D.C., who uses his background in forensic psychology to get into the minds of killers and solve some of the capital's most difficult cases. Alex Cross has long been one of Patterson's most famous fictional heroes, and the Amazon Prime Video TV series is hardly the first time the beloved detective has been seen on screen.
What makes the TV show different from popular Alex Cross movies like 1997's Kiss the Girls or 2001's Along Came a Spider, is that the show merely uses the character as a jumping-off point to tell a new story. Not adapting any particular Alex Cross novel was a bold choice, but it helps...

James Patterson Calls New ‘Cross’ Series More ‘Complicated’ and ‘Realistic’ Than His Original Novels
From Morgan Freeman’s interpretation in “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider” to Tyler Perry‘s attempted reboot with 2012’s “Alex Cross,” James Patterson’s famed literary detective has always been strong fodder for visual adaptation. However, speaking for a recent piece in The New York Times, Patterson admits that while his books make for easy reading, Cross was never as fleshed out as he probably should’ve been. That all changed with Amazon Prime Video’s new TV series “Cross” created by Ben Watkins and starring Aldis Hodge.
“My strength as a storyteller is that I get people flying through the pages,” Patterson wrote in an email to The Nyt. “My weakness is that I don’t always dig as deep as I could. Ben Watkins and his team dug deep and revealed a more complicated Alex Cross. We both wanted the new Cross to be more...

James Patterson, author of the original Alex Cross novels, has defended Tyler Perry's portrayal of the character in the 2012 film of the same name, blaming the movie's director for its failure. The movie was adapted from the 2006 novel Cross, the 12th book in the series, and followed the titular detective and psychologist hunting down a serial killer. Alex Cross was critically panned, earning an 11% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This resulted in the cancellation of a planned sequel and the franchise moving to a new medium, with the recent Cross TV show being the latest adaptation.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Patterson said that Alex Cross' movie format didn't allow it to fully delve into the backstories of important characters from the books, like Samson, who never appeared in the 2012 adaptation. He also blamed director Rob Cohen for the film's failure, claiming he'd continually rewrite the script, leading to the film's bad reception.

James Patterson rejected a seven-figure offer for Alex Cross to avoid changing one key detail about the character. Patterson is the author of the ongoing book series which began in 1993 and spans over 30 novels following Alex Cross, an African-American detective and father who counters threats to his family and the city of Washington, D.C. The series has been adapted to the screen several times, including the three movies 1997's Kiss the Girls and 2001's Along Came a Spider starring Morgan Freeman and 2012's Alex Cross starring Tyler Perry and Prime Video's new Cross series starring Aldis Hodge.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Patterson revealed that, before the Morgan Freeman movies, he rejected a seven-figure offer for the first Alex Cross book. The author rejected the offer because they wanted to change the character of Alex Cross to be white, and he refused to whitewash his lead detective.

Alex Cross, the character from author James Patterson’s popular crime thriller series, is getting a refresh by way of Prime Video’s Cross. In the eight-episode mystery series written and created by Ben Watkins, actor Aldis Hodge takes over the role of the Black detective, solving crimes in Washington, D.C., alongside fellow officer and best friend John Samson, played by Isaiah Mustafa.
“In talking to Ben, I really liked the vision and what he wanted to do with it to make Alex more contemporary, more of a cop dealing with the real world right now,” Patterson tells The Hollywood Reporter of giving his blessing to Watkins for his take on the characters Patterson first created in the 1993 novel Along Came a Spider.

There have been several movies based on James Patterson’s popular series of novels featuring psychologist/ police detective Alex Cross. I’ve not read the books, but Morgan Freeman set the bar high for the character in 1997’s Kiss The Girls, and 2001’s Along Came A Spider. Tyler Perry took a break from zany comedies to try the role in 2012’s Alex Cross. He did fairly well, but the movie didn’t. This debut season of “Cross” lands unfortunately closer to the latter end of the spectrum than to Freeman’s.
Next up is Aldis Hodge filling those shoes in a 10-episode streaming series on Amazon Prime. I was hopeful because I truly enjoyed his Alec Hardison role in the light caper series”Leverage”. He was so important to its entertainment value that the biggest shortcoming of the reboot – “Leverage: Redemption” – is that he’s only a recurring character,...

The following contains light spoilers for Cross Season 1, which premieres Thursday, Nov. 14 on Prime Video. It also contains discussion of violence.
Prime Video's Cross is the worthy successor to Amazon's epic adaptation of Bosch. It's another gritty, intense detective series based on a hit collection of books, with an absolutely perfect choice for the lead role. Aldis Hodge, beloved for Leverage and who was terribly underrated in City on a Hill, is unquestionably front and center in this series. And almost immediately, he makes Detective Alex Cross his own.
Cross is based on the characters from author James Patterson's Alex Cross novels, but it's not a direct adaptation of any book. Instead, executive producer Ben Watkins (who created Hand of God for Amazon) goes his own direction; sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. But inspired casting throughout and Watkins' commitment to thoroughly developing every single character make Cross...

What to do with the character of Alex Cross has been a hard case for Hollywood to crack. Bestselling author James Patterson introduced the ace detective to the world in 1993 with “Along Came a Spider,” launching a rich world centered around the hero psychologist and investigator now comprising more than 30 books. That series has collectively sold more than 100 million copies, which is presumably why Hollywood keeps trying to get it right.
Alex Cross first showed up on the big screen back in 1997, with Morgan Freeman in “Kiss the Girls,” followed by “Along Came a Spider,” named for the very first novel, with Freeman again, in 2001. And then in 2012, Tyler Perry took over in “Alex Cross,” controversially replacing Idris Elba.
With Aldis Hodge, “Cross,” the latest adaptation from Amazon’s Prime Video, finally gets it right.

The following contains major spoilers for Lioness Season 2, Episode 3, "Along Came a Spider," now streaming on Paramount+. It also contains discussion of sexual content.
The action-packed Lioness Season 2 premiere is followed by a slow-paced episode that moves all the plot components into place. Season 2, Episode 3, "Along Came a Spider" executes much of what was talked about in the opening two episodes. That doesn't mean that it's exciting to watch, however, as unnecessary subplots and camera shots that linger too long make it feel like a filler installment to line up all the dots.
"Along Came a Spider" formally puts Captain Josie Carrillo into the Lioness program, and most of the hour follows her as she arrives at the team's headquarters and goes through training. There's also a plotline about the CIA drumming up political support for Josie's operation. But there's no jaw-dropping moment in the story, and nothing that audiences...

Cross executive producer and showrunner Ben Watkins explains one major way the streaming series will be different from James Patterson's bestselling Alex Cross novels. The upcoming Prime Video show's cast features Aldis Hodge as the titular psychologist and detective who uses his intellect to solve difficult criminal cases and ensure that justice is served. In addition to Hodge, Cross' cast includes Isaiah Mustafa as Detective John Sampson and Samantha Walkes as Elle Monteiro.
In an interview with Collider, Watkins explained that Cross will not be directly adapting any of the plots from the Alex Cross novels. He discussed why this creative decision was made and how focusing on new mysteries allowed the series to feel more timely. Watkins also revealed that Patterson "was thrilled" when he learned about the approach that the Prime Video series would be taking with the source material. Check out Watkins' comments below:

Aldis Hodge has a new Cross to bear, but his take on author James Pattersons beloved detective will be a vastly different interpretation than has appeared in previous adaptations of the novels. And Hodge is rightfully excited about his divergent and nuanced iteration of Alex Cross, who appears in the upcoming Prime Video series, which is aptly titled Cross. Hodge said in an interview with Screen Rant while appearing at the New York Comic Con (Nycc):
I think that, for me, I see our execution of Cross as just one element, which is the vast fullness of his entire world it's alluding to, if we get to explore that. We get to see the cop, not only that, we get to see the father, we get to see the family man, the friend. We get to see the vulnerable person that may not have all the answers, and is still trying to find out.

Aldis Hodge is the third actor to bring Alex Cross to the screen, but he says Prime Videos forthcoming Cross show will offer fans a different take on James Pattersons forensic psychologist. Based on the best-selling series of crime novels, Morgan Freeman was the first actor to tackle the role in movie adaptations of 1997s Kiss the Girls and 2001s Along Came a Spider. Tyler Perry later succeeded Freeman, as he headlined 2012s Alex Cross. Meanwhile, Hodges Cross season 1 is scheduled to begin streaming on November 14, with season 2 already confirmed prior to its release.
Talking with Screen Rant at this years New York Comic-Con, Hodge spoke about how his character will differ from Freemans and Perrys versions. Hodge explained that the episodic television format allows Cross to fully explore the various aspects of his character, from his work as a detective to his family life and role as a father.

Quick Links Everything Coming To Paramount+ In October The Best Movies And Shows Coming To Paramount+ This Month
Paramount+ has plenty of new TV shows and movies coming in October 2024, including a lot of horror content for the month of Halloween. Paramount+ launched in March 2021 as a rebranding of the CBS All Access streaming platform, with the goal of expanding its offerings and reach. Thanks to the re-merger between CBS and Viacom in 2019, Paramount+ also has access to Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV libraries. That usually means that library content is more exciting for subscribers than new content because they can binge existing series.
Unlike some of its competitors, Paramount+ has not put an emphasis on original movie programming except in the case of childrens films. James Patterson’s Alex Cross book series is heading to the screen once again, and here’s the trailer for Cross.
Thus far, James Patterson’s Alex Cross action thriller novels have only been seen on the big screen. Morgan Freeman first took on the role of the detective for 1997’s Kiss the Girls, directed by Gary Fleder, and 2001’s Along Came A Spider, directed by Lee Tamahori. Both were well received and feature strong casts, including Ashley Judd, Carey Elwes and Michael Wincott.
A reboot landed in 2012, directed by Rob Cohen and starring Tyler Perry. However, Alex Cross was a critical and commercial failure, and plans for a sequel were dropped.
That brings us to Cross, a television series coming to Amazon Prime Video which follows Reacher's template of using the protagonist’s surname as the title.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge) is a detective and forensic psychologist,...
