Kuni Leml B'Kahir

1 review
7/10

Stands up surprisingly well

This is the third and (so far) last of Mike Burstyn's Kuni Leml movies, and the gimmick that serves as its apparent raison d'etre is that (according to one web page) "this was the first time that an Israeli production crew shot scenes in Egypt." That crew must certainly have been in and out very quickly. But in retrospect, more interesting than a few shots of Cairo are a few early-career performances from now-iconic Israeli actors Moshe Ivgy, Uri Gavriel, and Hana Laszlo. At the time, Laszlo was basically in the business of being pretty and funny, but no one watching this film would be surprised to find her an award-winning actress thirty years later. Like Mike Burstyn the lead actor, she gets a few poignant moments on screen to keep the comedy from looking trivial, and like him she puts them across impressively. In addition, the film boasts a number of cute and competent musical numbers.
