Following the announcement of Kazuki Yao’s retirement from the role earlier this month , the One Piece Jump Festa 2025 stage event welcomed Subaru Kimura (Todo in Jujutsu Kaisen ) on stage to officially induct him into the Straw Hat crew as the new voice of Franky . As part of the baton-passing ceremony, a tribute to Yao’s contributions over the years was held along with fellow voice actors and audience members passionately producing Franky’s “Super” catchphrase and pose. According to the statement, the funeral service was held with only relatives in attendance following wishes from his family. The Gundam franchise has dropped the debut trailer for its ambitious virtual reality film Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom.
Gundam fans got their first glimpse of Silver Phantom at last year's Anime NYC, where it was described as an "immersive adventure" film that combines elements of VR gaming and narrative storytelling to create a brand-new viewing experience. Per Anime News Network, Bandai Namco Filmworks, Meta Quest and French VR company Atlas V have unveiled the film's first trailer, along with staff details and a new key visual. According to Phantom's trailer, the film is set in Universal Century 0096 -- the same era in which the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (2010) took place. At the 2nd Niigata International Animation Film Festival held in Niigata City, Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino issued a playful challenge to the new generation animators, urging them to surpass Hayao Miyazaki.
Following a screening of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack at the festival on March 16, 2024, Tomino took the stage to discuss the changing landscape of anime, and impact of Hayao Miyazaki’s acclaimed film How Do You Live? which recently clinched the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Organisers have announced that the McM London Comic Con this May will host the European premiere of new Sunrise film Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin III. Comic Con will also welcome the series’ mecha designer and producer, Mika Akitaka and Osamu Taniguchi – both of whom will be signing autographs for fans and presenting a panel on the Saturday of the Excel London show.
