Kickboxer: Was Jean-Claude Van Damme classic going to feature a sister character?
John Bloom in Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (2019)
Legendary drive-in movie critic and movie host Joe Bob Briggs (who currently has a show on the Shudder streaming service called The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs) has a Patreon account called The Lost Drive-In, where they share the hosting segments from his days on MonsterVision, a TNT show he hosted from 1996 to 2000, and Joe Bob’s Drive-in Theater, which he hosted on The Movie Channel from 1986 to 1996… and one of the recently shared hosting segments might have unearthed a bit of interesting trivia about the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme classic Kickboxer! Specifically, it seems that the makers of Kickboxer might have, at one point, been planning to include a sister character and to put her in jeopardy.

Joe Bob wasn’t the only host presenting movies on The Movie Channel in the ’80s. One of his fellow hosts was Michele Russell, who also had some acting credits to her name.

‘The Last Drive-In’ Season 7 Sets Ice Nine Kills Frontman Spencer Charnas as First Guest, Shudder Debuts Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
Joe Bob Briggs is back at “The Last Drive-In,” with Shudder debuting the first trailer for its variety show’s seventh season ahead of its March 7 premiere.

Along with new footage and a promise of many double-features, the show also announced that the first episode would guest feature Spencer Charnas, frontman of the horror-slanted heavy metal band Ice Nine Kills. The program, hosted by Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl, also teased its season premiere programming, promising a 100th birthday celebration for “the first great American horror film.” This seventh season will cover more than 30 genre titles.

Charnas had previously teased his visit to the show to fans, posting on his own Instagram earlier this year, saying he is “Pre Lon’d up” — perhaps a reference to silent film star Lon Chaney ahead of the episode’s centennial celebration.

“The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs” returns on March 7 at 9 pm Et,...

Why Shudder is Every Horror Lover’s Dream Come True
Image
There’s nothing like a good horror movie to make you shudder in your shoes, or a cheesy one to make you laugh in dark delight.

If you love the horror genre, you’ll take them all.

And Shudder brings them to you — the good, the bad, and the ugly — all neatly packed in one place for your screaming — er, streaming — enjoyment.

(American Eagle Films / Screenshot)

Not only does the streaming service serve up a vast collection of horror movies and TV shows from the past and present, including both Hollywood and cult classics, it also delights viewers with a slew of original programming.

The upcoming Horror’s Greatest docuseries and the uber popular variety show, The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs are just two examples.

Add in original film productions such as Late Night with the Devil, Christmas Bloody Christmas, and the V/H/S franchise reboot, it...

Warner Bros. Discovery Cooks Up New Serving of ‘Dinner & A Movie’ For TBS
Image
Jenny Mollen’s and Jason Biggs’ next date night will likely capture more attention than usual.

The actors, husband and wife, on Saturday will attempt to revive a cable-tv mainstay for decidedly new purposes. When “Dinner & A Movie” debuted on TBS in 1995, it did so in an era when cable had yet to gain its fullest traction. A male-and-female duo gabbed and quibbled about movies such as “Breakfast Club” or “Fargo” and scarfed up gourmet snacks before throwing to a commercial. In return, executives hoped, viewers would stick around longer than they might otherwise. In 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery, TBS’ corporate parent, wants to use a retooled version of the show — off the air since 2011 — to throw a spotlight on everything from the company’s movies to the chefs from its Food Network.

When Biggs and Mollen watch “Aquaman,” they will do so accompanied by a seafood extravaganza created by a popular Food Network personality,...

Martin Short, Adam Sandler, Paul Feig & More Remember ‘Freaks And Geeks’, ‘Sctv’ Star Joe Flaherty
Image
Refresh for updates… Tributes are pouring in for Joe Flaherty, whose career launched with Canadian sketch comedy series Sctv, and who was known for his roles as Harold Weir on Freaks and Geeks, and Donald the heckler in Happy Gilmore. Flaherty died Monday at the age of 82.

Martin Short, Flaherty’s co-star on Sctv, remembered Flaherty as “the funniest man in the room.”

“In over 50 years of our friendship, there were very few people as wise or hilarious when it came to comedy, teaching improvisation and the art of character work as Joe,” Short wrote in a press statement. “In ‘Sctv’ we called him the anchor. In life, he was simply the funniest man in the room. I just adored him.”

Adam Sandler paid tribute to his Happy Gilmore co-star in a post on Instagram.

“Oh man. Worshipped Joe growing up, Sandler wrote next to photo of Flaherty. “Always had me and my brother laughing.

‘The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs’ Renewed For “Supersized” Sixth Season At Shudder — Here’s What The Horror Host Has Planned
Image
Exclusive: Joe Bob is back in town — not that he ever left — as the genre-focused streaming service Shudder has opted not to slash, but to extend his virally popular horror variety series, The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, bringing it back for a “supersized” sixth season.

Officially kicking off September 15th with a special touting the launch of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which had director, EP and key franchise creative Greg Nicotero as its special guest, the new season will see Briggs host and dissect more than 30 films, which is a new record. The world’s foremost drive-in movie critic, Briggs will next be back for two Halloween-themed specials in October, a holiday special in December, and a Valentine’s Day special in February, before transitioning to a new series format in March 2024.

Whereas Briggs’ signature movie watch parties have thus far been a double-feature experience, and...

The End Of TCM Underground Is A Huge Loss
Image
If there's a basic, no-frills definition for movies, it's that they're made to be seen. Cinema is a populist medium, attempting to reach as wide an audience as possible for as long as possible.

Perhaps that's why the feeling of "discovering" a movie can be so powerfully enjoyable. It gives you the sense, however false, that you're stumbling upon a secret piece of entertainment made just for you. If you happen to discover such a movie in the wee hours of the morning, so much the better — the surreal setting only serves to make what you're watching seem that much more unreal, richer, and special.

It's that sensation that the programming block on Turner Classic Movies known as "TCM Underground" sought to capture every Friday night-turned-Saturday morning. Begun by Eric Weber in 2006 and continued by programmer Millie De Chirico starting in 2007, TCM Underground made it its business to curate some of the most obscure,...

Last Drive-In Host Joe Bob Briggs Talks Redneck Movie History at SXSW
Buddy Ebsen, Max Baer Jr., Donna Douglas, and Irene Ryan in The Beverly Hillbillies (1962)
Ahead of his weekly Shudder series set to debut this month, Joe Bob Briggs paid a visit to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas, for SXSW. The legendary TV star has put together a two-hour stage show called How Rednecks Saved Hollywood, and it's needless to say that it's must-see for any fan of Joe Bob.

Accompanied by Darcy the mail girl from The Last Drive-In on Shudder, Briggs delves through the complete history of American rednecks and their involvement in cinema. Having the opportunity to witness the SXSW premiere for How Rednecks Saved Hollywood, I can attest that Joe Bob's theses is far better than any Ted Talk you'll ever see.

In the SXSW stage show, Briggs presents over 200 clips and movie stills from a century's worth of redneck movies. A self-professed redneck himself, Briggs takes the talk a tad further by managing to identify the very first redneck in history,...

Interview: Joe Bob Briggs Talks Exploitation Movies, MonsterVision, and The Last Drive-in on Shudder
This Friday the 13th, horror fans can tune into Shudder's The Last Drive-In, a 13-movie marathon hosted by none other than Joe Bob Briggs. Like many horror fans growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, Joe Bob Briggs was my conduit to a wide range of horror movies that aired during his marathons on TNT every Saturday, complete with candid commercial break commentaries and insightful interviews with some of horror's biggest stars. Following Shudder's announcement, I jumped at the chance to catch up with Joe Bob to talk about his start as a drive-in critic, his move to TV, career highlights from his time hosting MonsterVision, what we can expect from The Last Drive-In (which is expected to be Briggs' final time hosting a movie marathon), and more:

MonsterVision was huge for me growing up, and (along with my parents) is probably one of the big reasons I got into writing and talking about horror.

Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process. How Wes Craven Taught Me to Love Horror
When I was a kid, I was taught that horror movies were things to be avoided; Violent, sadistic, even satanic items made by sick people. Which of course only made them more intriguing. On our trips to Blockbuster I would sneak down to the horror movie isles, this forbidden place, and look at the ghastly images of monsters and mangled bodies on the covers, only imagining the horror they contained.

In 1984, Wes Craven made A Nightmare on Elm Street and gave a physical face to our childhood boogeymen. I was far too young to see the movie, but that didn’t matter. Freddy Krueger had stepped out of the film and become part of the cultural zeitgeist, sending a young boy’s imagination spinning in the middle of the night about all the ways he could come and get you.

It wouldn’t be until several years later when I...

Monstervision: The Saturday Drive-In
“This is Joe Bob Briggs reminding you that the Drive-In will Never Die!”

In 1993, Monstervision on TNT in America, was mostly a program that aired old horror movies and science fiction with the occasional hosting from magicians Penn and Teller. During the early nineties, many cable channels hadn’t yet solidified their formats, and horror hosts were still ways to fill late night television since most channels couldn’t afford original programming. During that time, esteemed and controversial film critic John Bloom (known by his pen name Joe Bob Briggs), finished his tenure at the Movie Channel, which had also began changing its format.

Briggs was unfortunately released from his acclaimed show where he introduced uncut movies for his fans with his color commentary book ending the movies. The prologues and closers often featured comedy with the Briggs character, when he wasn’t interviewing genre favorites like Linnea Quigley. He...

The Madness: Automatons Week #1
So there’s this horror movie competition that takes place on Facebook every October, and this is my first year participating. I’m still a little lost, so bear with me. I have watched more than this, but these are the movies I watched during the week of Oct 4th – October 11th, the first official week of The Madness. I hope I can squeeze some more in this week, but having a 4 year old makes that tough to do. I think I had a pretty good week considering all obstacles. Plus, I saw some great stuff this week. Some revisits that I try to do annually, as well as some new movies, not released to theaters yet.

Late Phases (2014) – 2 pts

Director: Adrián García Bogliano

Easily misunderstood, but still solid. We don’t get much in the way of werewolf horror, so it’s good to support it when we do.

Anthony Bourdain to play Joe Bob Briggs in 'The Joe Bob Briggs Story'
Travel host/author/chef/sexpot Anthony Bourdain has been nabbed to play old Joe Bob Briggs in the new movie about the B-movie critic from Grapevine, Texas!!!

First of all, Anthony Bourdain is amazing. I love him. He's got that show on the Travel Channel, No Reservations, and he visits exotic locations and eats and drinks and smokes on camera. I can't think of anyone better to play old Joe Bob in the movie version of Joe Bob's life.

The movie is being produced by Joe Bob's new film production company, and of course, will be emebellished with a bit of... untruths.

"Tony is the perfect 'me'," says Joe Bob (aka John Bloom). "He's tall, like me, in his 50s, and he's an author and hosts a TV show. We're practically the same person."

"I never watched his show," admits Bourdain, "and when he approached me to play him in a film,...
