Yes, the iconic teen comedy that redefined the ’90s is officially three decades old, and the cast that gave us Cher’s charm, Dionne’s sass, and Josh’s laid-back wisdom have all gone on very different journeys.

From red carpets to real-life activism, courtroom controversies to Marvel movie fame, the Clueless cast evolved into legends and left us inspired well into the 2020s. So today, let’s take a look at where each of the titular actors of this 1995 comedy are. From Alicia Silverstone to Paul Rudd and even stars like Donald Faison, Stacey Dash, and Breckin Meyer—let’s take a look at all.

Ethan Embry & Li Jun Li Talk ‘Alma & the Wolf’ Exclusive Clip
Ethan Embry
Ethan Embry‘s Deputy Ren Accord discovers Alma, played by Li Jun Li (Sinners), walking down the street covered in blood in the exclusive clip from Alma & the Wolf below.

“It was pouring down rain,” Embry recalls. “There was a 40 to 50 mile an hour constant wind, with occasional 60 mile an hour gusts. We had just lost any of our tents set up; they had blown into the Pacific Ocean. LiLi, the absolute monster that she is, is walking down the street in boxer shorts and a crop top and no shoes on. She was out there for a sold hour and a half. It was so cold. I remember that being one of the days that I bowed down to LiLi.”

“That’s the first time you meet Alma,” adds Li. “We don’t really know who she is, but I always felt like there was something quite off about her,...

Alma & the Wolf trailer: Ethan Embry horror film reaches theatres and digital this week
Image
The horror film Alma & the Wolf is set to receive a theatrical and digital release this Friday, June 20th – and to help you decide whether or not you’re going to be watching this movie in a few days, we have the trailer embedded above.

Directed by Michael Patrick Jann from a screenplay written by Abigail Miller, the film has the following synopsis: After a violent animal attack, paranoia spreads through Spiral Creek. But when Deputy Ren Accord gets too close, his son vanishes, and reality begins to fracture. This appears to be somewhat of a werewolf movie, with a whole lot of mind-boggling “what the hell is going on?” trickery mixed in.

Jann’s previous directing credits include Drop Dead Gorgeous, Organ Trail, and episodes of The Spiderwick Chronicles, Daybreak, The Good Doctor, Ghosted, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Atypical, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The Last Man on Earth,...

Ethan Embry Teases ‘Scream 7,’ Recalls Audition for Original ‘Scream’ [Exclusive]
Alma and the Wolf (2025)
While chatting with me about his new movie Alma and the Wolf, Ethan Embry briefly spoke about his involvement in Scream 7.

“The one thing I can tell you about Scream 7 was that it was absolutely incredible to be invited. That is a lovely community of people, from the very beginning to what it is now, and I’ve been wanting to a part of that franchise since the very beginning.”

Embry isn’t kidding — he auditioned for the original Scream with director Wes Craven.

“I remember auditioning for Scream 1. I can’t remember if it was [Jamie] Kennedy or [Matthew] Lillard — it was one of those — but I remember not getting good feedback from Mr. Craven,” he laughs.

Directed by Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, Scream 7 is due out in February 27, 2026.

Neve Campbell will reprise her role as final girl Sidney Prescott, alongside Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown,...

The Best of the Bad Guys: The Most Violent Ghostface Moments
Image
Welcome back to “Best of the Bad Guys” where we celebrate the best of horror’s worst villains. Today we’re celebrating all that corn syrup in the Scream franchise with the top 10 most violent Ghostface moments in no particular order. Let’s get right into it, Sidney!

Scream – Poor Steve and Casey

It all starts with Casey’s boyfriend Steve being horrifically gutted from behind whilst tied to a chair. We mostly only hear the gushey gushey’s as the camera focuses on Poor Steve’s face in agony but Wes Craven was always a master at horrifying you with sound, going way back to 1972’s Last House on the Left. There is, however, an unrated film cut that features all of Steve’s innards flopping out and into the universe. There’s emotional violence as well in this scene considering that as Steve was about to be gutted...

‘Alma & the Wolf’ Trailer – Ethan Embry’s Reality Fractures in Psychological Horror Mystery
Image
He who is greedy is always in want, so says the trailer for Alma & the Wolf.

A unique blend of psychological horror and supernatural mystery with hints of folk horror and body horror, the film will be released in select theaters and on Digital June 20 via Republic Pictures.

Ethan Embry (Empire Records), Li Jun Li (Sinners), Jeremie Harris (“Legion”), Lukas Jann (Organ Trail), Beth Malone (“BrainDead”), Kevin Allison (“The State”), Alexandra Doke (“City on Fire”), and Mather Zickel (“Reno 911”) star.

After a violent animal attack, paranoia spreads through Spiral Creek. But when Deputy Ren Accord (Embry) gets too close, his son vanishes, and reality begins to fracture.

Michael Patrick Jann directs from a script by actress Abby Miller.

I wrote in my review out of Boston Underground Film Festival, “Continually reinventing itself, the film subverts expectations and turns conventions on their head throughout. The efficacy of the buildup make...

Ethan Embry and Li Jun Li Bare Their Horror Teeth in ‘Alma and the Wolf’ Trailer [Exclusive]
Image
Ethan Embry (Can’t Hardly Wait) is a father struggling to find answers in Collider’s exclusive first look at the trailer for Alma and the Wolf. There’s plenty here for horror fans to sink their teeth into aside from the appearance of Embry, who will soon join the cast in Kevin Williamson’s Scream 7. Joining him in a co-leading role is Sinners star Li Jun Li, who plays the mysterious woman at the center of the story. But wait — there’s more! The film is the latest feature-length project to come from Michael Patrick Jann, who recently took audiences on a bloody ride courtesy of his 2023 flick, Organ Trail. If his name sounds familiar, but these two films aren’t where you’re placing him, try the iconic 1999 ahead-of-its-time feature, Drop Dead Gorgeous. In addition to the exclusive release of the trailer, Collider was also given the...

Boston Underground Film Festival 2025 – 7 Movies We Watched, from ‘The Surfer’ to ‘Fucktoys’
Image
The 25th annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 19-23 with a genre-blending lineup that included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, short film blocks, special guests, after parties, and more.

Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…

The Surfer

Like a wave, there’s no stopping the pure energy of Nicolas Cage. The Academy Award winner never phones in a performance, regardless of budget or subject matter, but not every filmmaker can harness his signature eccentricities. Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium) joins the ranks of those who possess such an abiloity, delivering a sun-baked descent into delirium with The Surfer.

Cage stars as The Surfer, a white collar man who wants to ride the waves with his son on the Australian coast where he grew up. But his paradise is lost thanks to a cult-like gang of local surfers, led by the enigmatic Scally,...

‘Bridgerton’ star Nicola Coughlan on her SAG Awards nominations and which Season 4 character is her ‘doppelganger’
Image
The third season of Bridgerton ended with Nicola Coughlan‘s Penelope Featherington marrying Luke Newton‘s Colin Bridgerton, and the actress is happy to confirm that she now refers to her beloved character with her new last name. “Yeah, she’s now Penelope Bridgerton, and that’s the name on the trailer when I go in — it’s quite cute,” Coughlan tells Gold Derby. “She’s very much in the family now. It’s very, very sweet. She’s graduated to Bridgerton status.”

Addressing the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she was nominated for drama actress and drama ensemble, Coughlan readily admits, “I did not think I had any chance in the world [to be nominated]. I wasn’t even tuned in. I knew the nominations were coming out, but I was not on my phone. I’d completely forgotten about it, if I’m being honest. I was getting ready to...

The 15 Best Modern Heist Movies
Image
There’s a reason we keep coming back to the heist movie genre, again and again and again. That’s because although most movies would have you believe that committing crimes is bad, we can’t help but respect a character who does it well. Robbing a little old lady on the street is unforgivable, sure, but robbing a wealthy old lady who keeps her hoard of ill-gotten money in an impenetrable vault surrounded by lasers and mercenaries? You gotta respect the moxie of anybody who even tries. And if they succeed, well dang, good for them. It sounds like they earned every penny.

There’s no shortage of classic heist movies, but with income inequality on our minds, and billionaires actively destroying everything decent about this planet every single day, the genre seems particularly alluring in the 21st century. Maybe that’s why we’ve had so many classic...

Nightbitch Cast & Character Guide: Who Else Stars In Amy Adams' Horror-Comedy
Image
Nightbitch's cast extends boasts some impressive talent opposite Amy Adams' commanding performance. Nightbitch is a black comedy riff on a classic creature feature, combining the themes of films like An American Werewolf in London with an exploration of motherhood. The film centers around Amy Adams' nameless Mother, who finds herself increasingly frustrated by her domestic life as a mother and wife above all else. Mother finds new freedom in the evenings however, especially as she steadily seems to begin transforming into a dog.

Although the overall film received mixed reviews from critics, Amy Adams' Nightbitch has become a streaming success on Hulu. While the film is anchored by Amy Adams' impressive central performance, the movie also features a strong supporting cast who bring out different shades of the lead character. The stars of Nightbitch range from veterans of the silver screen to modern character actors, all in service of...

Daniel Craig's Worst Movie On Rotten Tomatoes Is An Arthurian Legend With A Twist
Image
When you're trying to make your name in Hollywood, everyone has to start somewhere. It's a fact of life for just about every major actor or actress: You have to start small with your roles, like Amy Adams appearing in the beauty-pageant satire "Drop Dead Gorgeous" or Steven Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can" years before she became an A-lister. Perhaps one of the most famous examples people love to trot out is that Michael Shannon plays a Wrestlemania-loving young man very briefly near the end of the 1993 comedy classic "Groundhog Day," 15 years before his Oscar-nominated turn in the Sam Mendes film "Revolutionary Road." But not every actor's humble beginning is the kind of thing they may want to brag about.

Consider the most recent man to star as 007, Daniel Craig. Craig was a well-known British actor before he was called upon to play James Bond, but most people...

“This Is Why Everybody Loves Working With You”: Amy Adams Recounts The Moment Filming Arrival When She Knew She Could Always Trust Denis Villeneuve
Image
Amy Adams loved working with director Denis Villeneuve, and she now recalls a key moment in their partnership that stood out to her. Adams is an actor who has been celebrated for her work since early on in her career. She had her debut on-screen role in 1999 with Drop Dead Gorgeous and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress just seven years later, for the 2005 movie Junebug. The actor has gone on to be nominated for five more Oscars. This year, she took on the comedy horror film Nightbitch, and she has been receiving good reviews for her role.

Villeneuve, on the other hand, has been considered somewhat underappreciated throughout his career. Though he has directed several key sci-fi features of the 21st century, including Blade Runner: 2049 and two Dune movies, he has only been nominated for Best Director one time. Many feel the director was slighted for...

10 Best Ken Marino Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Ken Marino's career as an actor, writer, and director has been largely defined by two things: comedy and collaboration. After establishing himself via the MTV sketch comedy series "The State" with the comedy troupe of the same name (comprised of his closest friends and creative confidants), he went on to work on some of the funniest, most brilliant, and underrated TV and film projects to come out of Hollywood in the last two decades.

Much of his work is the result either of his own creative will or that of his former troupe-mates, the group having spread through the industry to wreak hilarious havoc. They often explore absurd angles on popular genres such as medical dramas and reality dating shows. At the same time, he's a familiar face on a smorgasbord of network sitcoms, as well as a few audacious dramedies you'll certainly want to add to your watch list.

'I'm Holding Up Production': Amy Adams Reveals Her 1 Regret From Filming Oscar-Nominated Spielberg Movie
Image
Amy Adams has revealed one of her regrets while filming Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated movie Catch Me If You Can. One of her scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio ended up proving to be quite difficult for the young actress to film.

Adams recently spoke about filming the Steven Spielberg flick while being interviewed by Vanity Fair. During the segment, she re-watched clips from her movies, and she spoke about her role in the film as Brenda Strong, the hospital nurse who falls in love with Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio). While filming a scene where Frank and Brenda share a touching moment together, Adams felt like she was holding up filming by laughing at an on-set snafu.

"That Was My One Regret": Amy Adams Held Up Filming Steven Spielberg's Oscar-Nominated Movie Because 1 Leonardo DiCaprio Moment Kept Making Her Laugh
Image
Amy Adams held up filming Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated movie because of one Leonardo DiCaprio moment that kept making her laugh, saying, "That was my one regret." Adams is a six-time Oscar-nominated actress for her performances in Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, The Master, American Hustle, and Vice. During much of this time, she was also playing Lois Lane in the Dceu. Today, Adams is one of the most accomplished actresses, having earned numerous accolades, which also include two Golden Globes and two Emmy nominations.

The actress made her film debut with a supporting role in the 1999 dark comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous and afterward, she began taking on multiple "mean girl" roles in low-budget movies. Amy Adams' first major role came in a Steven Spielberg movie from 2002 alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, though she faced a year of unemployment afterward. Her big breakthrough didn't come until a few years later in the 2005 indie dramedy Junebug,...

Where To Watch Drop Dead Gorgeous — Is It Streaming For Free?
Image
Of all the films in Kirsten Dunst's teen movie oeuvre, Drop Dead Gorgeous is probably the most beloved, so why is it almost impossible to find in the streaming world? Released in 1999, the star-studded Drop Dead Gorgeous is a pitch-black mockumentary satire film set in the world of teen beauty pageants, and looks at the lethal lengths the young contestants will go to to win the crown. At the center of it all is fresh-faced scholarship hopeful Amber Atkins (Dunst) whose trailer park upbringing couldn't be more different than her biggest competitor, the wealthy Becky Leeman (Denise Richards).

Like many '90s teen comedies, Drop Dead Gorgeous was dismissed by critics as derivative of classics like Heathers, and overly silly. It earned a paltry 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, and moviegoing audiences weren't much kinder. Drop Dead Gorgeous didn't even earn back its $15 million budget, netting a worldwide box office gross of only $10.5 million.

The Best Portrayal Of A Corrupt President Came In An Unlikely Comedy
Image
Hollywood has been borderline obsessed with Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal for over half a century. Plenty of presidents or watershed legislative decisions have gotten adaptations, but given the recency of his crimes, Nixon is on another level. There have been 24 feature films centered on Nixon and/or Watergate, and that's not including the recent influx of prestige miniseries like 2023's "The White House Plumbers" about Nixon's political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy or 2022's "Gaslit," the Julia Roberts-starring series about Martha Mitchell, the wife of Nixon's at-the-time United States Attorney General.

I was born in 1990, which means my understanding of Nixon until, say, my junior year of high school, was what I had absorbed from pop culture. My introduction to Nixon's resignation speech was when it played over the radio in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and I learned about all of his specific...

Is Matt Walsh's Am I Racist? Really a Documentary?
Image
Earlier this month, a new satirical comedy launched in theaters, and despite its box office success and high audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it has not been receiving many critical reviews. The film, directed by Justin Folk, and starring the right-wing political commentator, Matt Walsh, has been described by many, including Walsh himself, as a documentary. However, some aspects of the film, as well as recent revelations from those involved, suggest otherwise.

Am I Racist? was created by the conservative media company, The Daily Wire, notorious for producing The Ben Shapiro Show, and Mr. Birchum. To some, it was a piece of political media put out to highlight perceived criticisms of Dei, and others simply saw it as a funny film. This is where some of the confusion arises since its comedic elements seem to represent Am I Racist? as a mockumentary, similar to films such as Borat or Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Amy Adams' New Movie Is Her Boldest Attempt To Snap An Unbelievable Oscars Streak
Image
By the end of 2024, Amy Adams is going to star in a new horror comedy movie that will hopefully bring her what she is long overdue for an Oscar. Since the late 1990s, Amy Adams has been impressing audiences with her versatile acting range and heartfelt performances. The actress made her film debut in 1999's Drop Dead Gorgeous, then had her breakout playing a young pregnant woman in 2005's Junebug. From there, Amy Adams' movie roles have been diverse, from drama and comedy to horror and musicals. Despite this, Adams has yet to reach that important Hollywood milestone.

In the last ten years, Amy Adams has maintained a fairly busy career. She finished out her stint as Lois Lane in the DC Universe, revived a beloved childhood franchise via Disenchanted, and starred in several other outstanding movies. Now, Adams is set to continue this streak with her newest film, 2024's Nightbitch.

Blair Witch Producer Reveals Everyone's Been Watching the Wrong Version of the Film
Image
Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project successfully used the found-footage filming technique to create an incredible horror story. However, producer Mike Monello recently revealed that the version of the film fans are familiar with isn't the one that the filmmakers wanted to release.

In an extensive post on X, Monello explained that this was due to technological restrictions which existed at the time. "In 1999, theatrical films didn't originate on video, so there was no codified process for putting them out on video," he said. "So they did it like all films back then. They transferred the 35mm negative to video. Unfortunately, the 35mm negative is not the actual camera negative. As a result, the version released for all forms of home video is incorrect. The colors, the motion, the strange rounded corners, it didn't look like a home video, and it didn't look like film."

10 Best '90s Cult Classic Movies, Ranked

The 1990s was an amazing decade for movies. There were a ton of indie films making waves in Hollywood. Some of these were immediate hits when they were released, but others bombed at the box office. Either way, the '90s was a good decade for some of the best cult classics ever made.

It's hard to hone in on a definitive list of the best '90s cult classics. After all, there are so many fantastic films from this decade to choose from, including underrated gems like 12 Monkeys, Cry-Baby, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Trainspotting, Bottle Rocket, and Reality Bites. However, there are certain movies from the 1990s that have penetrated the zeitgeist more than others. 10 Great Teen Movies That Are Surprisingly Dark
Image
When audiences think of teen movies, they usually picture either comedies, family-friendly Disney movies, or romcoms. However, there's also a surprisingly dark underbelly to teen movies as well; for example, hard-hitting dramas like the 2005 movie Brick, or the adaptation of Laurie Halse Anderson's novel Speak. As a genre, teen movies run the gamut of which topics they explore and the tone they use to tell the story.

For those who want comedy and darkness, there are plenty of great teen movies that are surprisingly grim, yet still light and entertaining. Dark teen movies, like Heathers or Drop Dead Gorgeous, are laced with macabre humor, cynical characters, and sinister crimes. These films are meant to be fun, and they fuse the best of what comedic teen movies and dramatic teen movies have to offer. Viewers can add these films to their fall watch lists when it's back-to-school and spooky season.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Cheerleaders Gone… Bank Robbing?

The year 2000 was the New Hollywood of cheerleaders in film. After years of movies in which teen girls with pom poms were reduced to one-note bitches and bimbos, Y2K saw the easy-to-stereotype athletes receive a sudden rush of cinematic respect with Peyton Reed’s instant classic “Bring It On.”

Starring Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union, the story of a rivalry between two cheer squads combined an authentic love for the (extremely grueling) work of cheer captains with fun flirty comedy and a surprisingly intelligent depiction of cultural appropriation.

How Patti Yasutake's Star Trek Character Grew From Walk-On To Series Regular
Image
Actress Patti Yasutake, best known to Trekkies as Nurse Alyssa Ogawa, died on August 5, 2024, of a rare type of T-cell lymphoma. She was 70 years old.

Nurse Ogawa first appeared on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the episode "Future Imperfect" more or less as a background character. She was one of Dr. Crusher's retinue of medical staff, there to give viewers the impression that the ship's sickbay was constantly bustling. She went on to star in 14 additional episodes of the show, and was usually merely standing next to Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), passing her tools or saying "Yes, Doctor." She had a good bedside manner, and her repeated appearances had viewers wondering who she was and what her story might be. As the series progressed, Nurse Ogawa's role expanded incrementally, eventually leading to her becoming a legitimate supporting player.

Indeed, by the show's seventh season, Nurse Ogawa began to...

Image
Patti Yasutake, known to fans for appearing in Star Trek: The Next Generation and two of its connected feature films, has passed away. She was 70 years old.

Per Variety, Yasutake, who was living with cancer, died on Aug. 5 in Santa Monica. Her manager, Kyle Fritz, confirmed her passing with a statement that noted, Patti was my first client when I began over 30 years ago. We enjoyed every day we got to work together, and I will miss her spirit talent and tenacity but most of all her friendship.

Yasutake played the role of Nurse Alyssa Ogawa, originally one of the head nurses in sickbay, in Star Trek: The Next Generation. She would appear in 16 episodes of the series, which includes the character memorably getting promoted by Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) in the Season 7 episode "Lower Decks." ‘Dick’ at 25: The Watergate Satire’s Director and Writer on Putting Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst in Nixon’s White House
Image
“It’s gonna be different now. They’ll never lie to us again.”

It seems odd to start at the ending of “Dick,” the 1999 Watergate satire starring Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams and now celebrating its 25th anniversary. But those final lines, spoken by Dunst’s Betsy to Williams’ Arlene, the teen girl duo whom the movie posits as the real political masterminds behind the Deep Throat informant that helped bring down Richard “Dick” Nixon, hit different when rewatching “Dick” in the current political climate.

“It always got a knowing laugh,” said director Andrew Fleming, speaking to IndieWire during the same week of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life and President Joe Biden announcing he was not seeking reelection, instead endorsing his Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

“We knew at the time that that was meant to be a joke,” said screenwriter Sheryl Longin, who co-wrote the script with Fleming.

Studio Comparisons Forced Drastic Changes To Drop Dead Gorgeous
Image
Without hyperbole, Michael Patrick Jann ("The State") and Lona Williams' ("Sugar & Spice") mockumentary comedy film about a small-town Minnesota beauty pageant is my favorite comedy film, ever. As a former teenage Midwest beauty queen myself, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" speaks to me on a religious level. My blood is not red, it is Mount Rose, and I am an American Teen Princess Pageant girl for life. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" turns 25 this year — one of the many teen girl masterpieces released in 1999 — but is still criminally underseen due to the film's poor box office performance at the time of release and subsequent years of physical releases being out of print. It's a shame because the cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams (her debut role!), Alexandra Holden, Nora Dunn, Mo Gaffney, Will Sasso, Matt Malloy, Mike McShane, Mindy Sterling, Sam McMurray, and...

Why Was Brittany Murphy's Final Movie Delayed for So Long?
Image
Brittany Murphy's final film, Something Wicked, was released five years after her death, disappointing fans with its delayed and lackluster production. Despite a haunting plot and Murphy as the lead, the film received poor audience reviews and a limited theatrical release, likely leading to a box office bomb. Unfortunately, Murphy's career ended before the release of Something Wicked.

Brittany Murphy was one of Hollywood's biggest rising stars in the late '90s and 2000s. That career was cut tragically short when she passed away in 2009 from an accidental overdose at just 32 years old. Some of her best-known roles included Clueless, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Girl, Interrupted, 8 Mile, and a voice role in King of the Hill. While personal issues led to her career stalling shortly before her passing, she could likely have enjoyed even more success in the coming years. But in a way, her career did live on after she was gone.

Mia Goth Went to an ‘Eyes Wide Shut’-Esque Party to Prepare for ‘MaXXXine’
Image
Mia Goth channeled her Stanley Kubrick fandom to prepare for “MaXXXine.”

Goth told Ireland’s Entertainment.ie journalist Brian Lloyd in the below video that she shadowed a sex worker before starring in Ti West’s conclusion to his trilogy love letter to classic Hollywood.

“I was living in New York at that time and I was introduced to a stripper and I spent quite a lot of time with that stripper and I would get to know her and I would ask questions and that was really helpful,” Goth said. “She would then take me to these events. One in particular, it was a crazy party in New York. It felt very much like ‘Eyes Wide Shut.’ I don’t know how I got in but I was like kind of in the corner witnessing everything. Once I felt like I got enough information, I went away because it was quite intense.

Historical Actress: Kirsten Dunst’s Period Pieces
Image
Illustration by Stephanie Monohan.Kirsten Dunst has played a pageant contestant not once, but twice: famously, in the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), then, in a self-reflexive turn in Showtime’s short-lived satire of predatory capitalism, On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019). In the latter, Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a pageant queen turned widow turned cunning representative of the Founders American Merchandise corporation. In one scene, she instructs a goth teen on a stratagem of competition: “Dazzle by any means necessary. If you want better lightin’ than the other girls, give yourself better lightin’ than the other girls.”Dunst has built a career around this principle. Having started as a child star, she has supported superhero franchises, starred in teen movies and art films alike, and worked in both film and television. In each project, she follows Krystal’s advice, juggling each character’s interiority with bigger-picture concerns. She...

“Civil War” - Kirsten Dunst in “S”

Kirsten Dunst’s 15 Best Performances Ranked, from ‘Civil War’ and ‘Melancholia’ to ‘Bring It On’
Image
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in September 2019. It has been updated with new entries to coincide with the release of “Civil War.”]

Kirsten Dunst has many talents as an actor, but one of her best virtues is quite possibly just how cool she is. From her days as a teen star in “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides” to her current era as an adult who takes on adventurous, ambitious roles in movies like “The Power of the Dog” and “Civil War,” Dunst has always had a charm and ease to her that has made her feel both relatable and glamorous. Part of it is her wry, catlike smile which gives her movie star looks some individuality. Part of it is her interviews, in which she projects a down-to-earth nature that feels authentic rather than put-on. And most of it comes from her choice of projects, which shows a great sense of taste and a desire to do truly great, ambitious, and weird work.

Dunst has dabbled in plenty...

Best Mockumentary Movies in Different Genres, Ranked
Image
One of the most interesting types of movies is a mockumentary, or fiction films that imitate documentaries. Depending on the genre, there can be different reasons for using this format. The film language of documentaries gives horror and science fiction movie audiences a terrifying feeling that the story might be real or one day become real, while the same narrative device makes the drama even sadder and comedy even funnier.

The first big example of this art form in pop culture is the 1938 radio transmission of Orson Welles reading an adaption of the Hg Wells book War of the Worlds, which many listeners believed to be an actual news broadcast at the time because it used the same style. A trend in movies and television since the late 1980s, a few subtypes of mockumentaries have been explored since its popularization. From pretending to be a montage of found footage to emulating contemporary documentary editing,...

There are few archetypes more American than the high school cheerleader. Typically portrayed as a teenage girl with a megawatt smile, perfect hair, unmeasurable confidence, and an expertly crafted balance between squeaky-clean innocence and sexual deviancy, our society is still equal parts fascinated and offended by the mere existence of the cheerleader. Sure, films like "Bring It On" and the accessibility of competitive cheerleading on ESPN has brought some legitimacy to the sport and artistry, but by and large, cheerleaders are still used as shorthand to mean things like "bimbo, stupid, b*tchy, shallow, prissy," or to make another girl sound more interesting. As a cultural demigod once sang, "She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers."

With this seemingly "untouchable" social status and implied power of influence, it also makes cheerleader characters very easy to hate. Few have ever reached the level of disdain as Megan Fox's Jennifer Check in "Jennifer's Body,...

17 Best Teen Comedy Movies of 1999 — the Greatest Year for Adolescent Comedies
Image
In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

The Six-Time Oscar Nominee Who Played Memorable Roles On Both Buffy And Charmed
Image
One of the great things about the old broadcast TV model, in which seasons stretched to 20+ episodes, mere months separated one season from the next, and production schedules were thus unforgivingly demanding, was that producers always had an insatiable need for new talent. Filming 22 consecutive 42-minute episodes over the course of a few months? Your principals aren't going to be enough to cover all the ground your story will invariably traverse, and besides, they wouldn't have the time or energy even if you asked.

The solution to this problem? Guest stars!

Series from this golden age of television, from sitcoms like "Friends" and "Frasier" to dramas like "Charmed" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," were powered by guest stars in the same way the larger Hollywood machine is powered by the legions of extras, bit players, and uncredited walk-ons who fill each frame with glorious humanity. Those last two series in...
