The original Broadway production of "Applause" on which this television production is based opened at the Palace Theater in New York on March 30, 1970, ran for 896 performances and won the 1970 Tony Award (New York City) for the Best Musical. Using the London cast, this filmed production cast includes Lauren Bacall, Penny Fuller and Robert Mandan from the original Broadway cast.
