‘Cheers’ Co-Creator Says the Industry’s Sitcom Drought Is Forcing Him to Retire
Image
Anyone who grew up believing that the TV was an immediate family member will likely be familiar with the name James Burrows.

The legendary sitcom director helmed episodes of iconic series like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, Friends, Will & Grace and Frasier. Plus, he co-created Cheers, which explains why his name appears in the credits of every episode, along with that one photo of that old-timey guy with the bowler hat and the extremely punchable face.

But it turns out that work is drying up for the 84-year-old television veteran — not because he’s older than styrofoam, but because the industry just isn’t making TV shows like they used to.

Be wary, ‘The Pitt’ and ‘The Studio’: The Television Critics Association only agrees with the Emmys about half the time
Image
The Television Critics Association has been doling out prizes for over 40 years now, with its first awards show in 1985 honoring The Jewel in the Crown and The Cosby Show. Fast-forward to this week, and the 2025 winners consist of The Pitt and The Studio (one win for Best Comedy Series). Since the TCA's champions are announced prior to the Emmys every year, and cover the same June 1-May 31 eligibility period, awards prognosticators often look to the organization as a pivotal bellwether on the campaign trail.

But that might be a fool's errand.

Over the past 25 years, the TCA Awards and the Emmys have only agreed 40 percent of the time for Best Comedy Series,...

Why Peacock Canceled Saved By The Bell's Reboot
Image
'90s nostalgia isn't always a bankable trend. For proof of that, look no further than the topsy-turvy nature of sitcom revivals staying on the air. Back in 2024, Netflix canceled "That '90s Show" after two seasons, with the sitcom failing to replicate the success of a different legacy revival, "Fuller House." Before that, NBC pulled the plug on the "Will & Grace" reboot after three seasons in 2020, with the show's creators claiming that it ended because the series reached its natural conclusion. Elsewhere, Peacock excused the "Saved by the Bell" class for the last time in 2022, but that cancellation was quite surprising.

As documented by Deadline, the first season of "Saved by the Bell" — which reunites most of the original gang 26 years after Zack (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Kelly's (Tiffani Thiessen) wedding — was a modest hit for Peacock — at one point, it was the platform's most-streamed original of all time. What's more,...

Emmy Icon James Burrows Carries the Torch for Multi-Cam Sitcoms, but He’s Scared They’re Dying
Image
James Burrows is by far the preeminent person in the world of TV comedy directing, with 27 all-time nominations in the category versus only 10 for runner-up Jay Sandrich. But on the heels of that 27th nomination, for Hulu’s “Mid-Century Modern,” the 84-year-old director isn’t feeling optimistic about his specialty, the once popular but now increasingly marginalized multi-cam sitcoms.

Filmed in front of a live studio audience, those shows ruled the airwaves in years past and include many of the most successful series in television history. Burrows had a hand in lots of them, directing multiple episodes of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Cheers,” “Taxi,” “Frasier,” “Friends” and “Will & Grace” — and reminiscing just makes him sadder, as multi-cam sitcoms have largely been replaced by single-camera shows shot on stages or on location without an audience.

“I’ve been to the funeral for the multi-camera comedy about nine times,” Burrows said.

How Mad About You Star Helen Hunt Changed Her Mind On Reviving The Show
Image
A classic sitcom star has opened up about why she changed her mind about rebooting the series, after initially not wanting to have the show return. There have been a multitude of sitcom revivals in recent years that take familiar characters and progressed their stories after the initial ending. New seasons of Will & Grace, for instance, drew strong success.

However, it's also been a tossup surrounding which revivals are going to succeed and which won't. One of the more recent examples is Frasier, which originally ended in 2004, but returned in 2023. Following the Frasier revival's season 2 finale, the show was unfortunately cancelled on Paramount+. But there's one sitcom revival that almost didn't happen because of trepidation.

Mad About You Star Helen Hunt Was Initially Against The Show Getting Revived

In a recent interview, Helen Hunt, star of the '90s sitcomMad About You, revealed her initial misgivings about a potential revival.

Helen Hunt Reveals Why She Almost Rejected Mad About You Reboot
Image
Twister star Helen Hunt has revealed that she nearly turned down the chance to reunite with Paul Reiser in the Mad About You revival. The iconic TV pairing revisited their iconic NBC sitcom as a 12-episode limited series event in 2019.

Speaking to Collider, Hunt admitted she was initially opposed to the idea of bringing back Mad About You two decades after its 1999 series finale. The rise of streaming had seen numerous classic sitcoms — including Will & Graceand Roseanne — reinvented to varying levels of success, but it took some convincing — and a notable change in her personal life — for Hunt to sign on for Spectrum Original's reboot of her 12-time Emmy Award-winning sitcom.

"We were 100% sure we would never do a reboot. It seemed like a really cheesy thing to do, and we’d answered everything, and we looked down on them," she said. "And then I saw Will & Grace, and I was like,...

Why Helen Hunt Initially Refused a ‘Mad About You’ Reboot [Exclusive]
Image
When the idea of reviving Mad About You first came up, Helen Hunt’s answer was an emphatic “no.” The Emmy-winning actress, who starred alongside Paul Reiser as New York couple Jamie and Paul Buchman from 1992 to 1999, had long felt the beloved sitcom had said everything it needed to.

“We were 100% sure we would never do a reboot. It seemed like a really cheesy thing to do, and we’d answered everything, and we looked down on them,” Hunt admitted during her Fan Expo Boston conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub. “And then I saw Will & Grace, and I was like, it’s really good and it’s really funny. Are we maybe stupid and should think about it?”

That change of heart set the stage for the 2019 Mad About You revival, which brought the Buchmans back for a 12-episode run on Spectrum Originals. In the new season, Paul...

Ramy Youssef Exits Will Ferrell’s Netflix Golf Comedy Over Creative Differences; Molly Shannon Joins Cast
Image
Ramy Youssef, Josh Rabinowitz and Andy Campagna have exited as executive producers of Will Ferrell’s upcoming golf comedy series at Netflix due to creative differences.

Variety understands that the leadership change took place last year. Youssef and Rabinowitz were originally announced as co-showrunners in addition to having created the series with Ferrell, who stars as a fictional gold legend. Campagna was executive producing via Youssef’s Cairo Cowboy production banner. Cairo Cowboy continues to work with Netflix on an untitled living facility series in development with Steve Way, Youssef’s close friend and collaborator.

Separately, Molly Shannon has joined the series in the role of Stacy. The project reunites her with Ferrell, as the two overlapped as “Saturday Night Live” cast members from 1995 to 2001. More recently, she starred in Season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building” on Hulu and all three seasons of HBO Max’s “The Other Two,...

Sean Hayes, Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, and Megan Mullally in Will & Grace (1998)
‘Will & Grace’: How Eric McCormack Found The Will To Play Will
Sean Hayes, Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, and Megan Mullally in Will & Grace (1998)
Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment

When the iconic sitcom Will & Grace first premiered on NBC in 1998, featuring an openly gay man as a lead character was considered truly risky. It was a groundbreaking proposition in network television. This daring move came just a year after Ellen DeGeneres’s eponymous sitcom, Ellen, had been cancelled. That followed a significant ratings nosedive, largely perceived as a backlash to her character’s historic on-screen coming out episode. At the time, the landscape of LGBTQ+ representation on mainstream TV was still nascent. It often met with trepidation from advertisers and some audiences.

To NBC’s immense credit, they chose to take a chance on Will & Grace. Their gamble paid off handsomely. The show was rewarded with an incredibly successful eight-season original run. It became a cultural phenomenon and a staple of “Must See TV.” Furthermore, its enduring popularity led to a...

Chicago – The comedy icon Lily Tomlin has touched nearly three generations with her skewered view of the world. She was in Chicago to introduce the film version of “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe at the Gene Siskel Film Center.

Mary Jean “Lily” Tomlin was born in Detroit, and later attended Wayne State University, where she switched her major to theater after auditioning for a play. Peacock's Replacement for 'Manifest' Is a Sudden Netflix Streaming Hit
Image
Both in movies and on television, stories set in airplanes — or that are tied to events in an airplane — tend to be thrilling and spark viewers' curiosity. The last hit show that featured an airborne plot was Manifest, a 2018 thriller and mystery series that saw a group of passengers simply disappear mid-flight and land five and a half years later as if no time had passed. In light of its possibility, Peacock quickly added to its catalog a show with a similar potential that was almost equally popular. Now that it's premiered on Netflix, the Canadian series Departure is once again seeing a rise in its popularity.

Depending on how you look at it, Departure can even be considered a sort of "sister" series to Manifest. The story centers around the Tsif (Transport Safety and Investigations Bureau), an entity that investigates and tries to understand the cause of major airline disasters.

Dave Flebotte, the Emmy-nominated writer and producer who worked on Tulsa King, Desperate Housewives, Boardwalk Empire and The PJs, has died after a long battle with cystic fibrosis. He was 65.

Flebotte died Tuesday in a hospital in Missoula, Montana, his wife, Sandra Lindqvist, told The Hollywood Reporter. “Writing to him was everything,” she said.

Comedian Eddie Pepitone Sets July Debut For Veeps Special ‘The Collapse’
Image
Exclusive: Veteran comic Eddie Pepitone is preparing to release a new hour of stand-up, The Collapse, which will debut on streaming platform Veeps on July 17 and be released as a comedy album via Blonde Medicine on August 15.

Exec produced by Patton Oswalt and directed by Steven Feinartz, The Collapse is described as a true Pepitone rant-and-romp as he barrels through the heightened emotions and anxieties of modern life. Over the course of the hour, he pores over several micro topics and some self-deprecating examinations of his behavior, unpacking notions like the “self-loathing that attaches to your face like that thing in Alien.”

Said Pepitone, “The special for me is always an accumulation of rage and tension that has to be let out. I always remember that my first job is to be funny, so I always talk about my personal collapse and hypocrisies, while addressing the societal collapse. My penchant for self-loathing,...

The Emmys have one last chance to make things right with ‘The Comeback’
Image
If at first you don't succeed (at the Emmys), try, try again.

HBO has renewed The Comeback, from Emmy winners Lisa Kudrow (Friends) and Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City), for a third and — the network swears — final season, the network announced Friday. It has been 20 years since the first season debuted in 2005, and 11 years since Season 2 aired in 2014.

Season 3 of the comedy series will begin production this summer with returning cast members Kudrow as Valerie Cherish, a washed-up actress who's now the subject of a documentary; Dan Bucatinsky as Billy Stanton, Valerie's publicist; Laura Silverman as Jane Benson, Valerie's producer; and Damian Young as Mark Berman, Valerie's husband.

The new season will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max in 2026.

The Comeback is one of those that shows that TV fans often cite as being "robbed" at the Emmy Awards. Meaning it never took home a trophy in any category,...

In a new interview, the 67-year-old actor – who has appeared on shows including Grace & Frankie, Will & Grace, Web Therapy, and Somebody Somewhere – recalled being a member of the sketch comedy troupe the Groundlings back in the 1980s.

Despite being a part of the group that launched the careers of many SNL stars, Tim claimed that back at that time, he couldn’t audition for the NBC sketch comedy series because he was a publicly out gay man.

Keep reading to find out more…“I was out as a gay man and people knew that they would not hire openly gay people,” Tim alleged on The Julia Cunningham Show, referencing SNL boss Lorne Michaels and late manager Bernie Brillstein.

“[They] had kind of a thing where they did not hire gay people, so I never got to audition,...

'Night Court' Star Gives a Devastating Update Following Season 4 Cancellation
Image
Things were looking grim for the Melissa Rauch-led Night Court reboot at NBC following its cancellation after three seasons. Despite hopes from the team that the sitcom could find a new home for courtroom hijinks by shopping the series, initial reports from TV Line revealed that nobody was biting on bringing back Judge Abby Stone and her staff for another run. Now, Rauch has delivered the show its sentence. In a recent post on Instagram, she finally addressed the show's end and revealed that, despite the best efforts of everyone involved, the Manhattan municipal court will be remaining closed.

"I have held off on posting anything about Night Court not continuing until I knew we did everything in our power to find another home for it," Rauch said to open her post. As a longtime fan of the original Reinhold Weege series starring Harry Anderson, the reboot was a...

Why ‘Shrinking’ is about to go big at the 2025 Emmys
Image
As therapist Jimmy Laird might tell one of his patients, "All good things come to those who wait."

Well, Shrinking has been waiting patiently ... for some major Emmy love. Apple TV+'s hit comedy series only received a pair of nominations for its first season in 2023: Best Comedy Actor for Jason Segel (as Jimmy) and Best Comedy Supporting Actress for Jessica Williams (as Gaby). That's right — even Hollywood heavyweight Harrison Ford (as Paul) was snubbed. But for Season 2, Gold Derby is predicting that Shrinking will be supersized at the 2025 Emmys.

Sometimes it takes a year for Television Academy members to discover a project, particularly in this era of Peak TV when there are so many shows vying for attention. Just look at historic examples like Will & Grace, Fleabag, and Succession — all were virtually ignored for their first at bats, but then exploded with noms and wins for their second cycles.

The White Lotus Star Parker Posey "Didn't Get" Her Own Jokes on Will & Grace
Image
The White Lotusstar and Hollywood icon Parker Posey recalls not understanding her own jokes on Will & Grace.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Posey opened up about her time on the hit sitcom, recalling, "I would say stuff like on Will & Grace and people would laugh, and I'd be like, 'I don't get it.'" When asked by Friends star Lisa Kudrow if she genuinely didn't understand the jokes, Posey replied, "I didn't think it was funny. Yeah, like, 'What are you laughing at?'"

Posey went on to discuss her Will & Grace character, Dorleen, saying, "I take it seriously, and then you go, 'Oh, well, that was kind of funny,' and then they throw jokes at you as you're doing it, because everyone else has been doing it for a few years... ‘Mid-Century Modern’ Set Tips Its Hat to Classic Palm Springs and Pop Culture
Image
Imagine you’re the production designer of a legendary sitcom so beloved that there is an entire pop-up experience devoted to it. And then try to imagine topping that. Greg Grande is the literal architect of Central Perk, Monica and Rachel’s apartment and Joey and Chandler’s across-the-hall domicile in “Friends.” But his impressive throwback Palm

Springs, California, home featured in Hulu’s “Mid-Century Modern” might win a new legion of admirers and maybe another pop-up at some point — only this one will have a grotto.

“The backstory of this set came from the Dinah Shore estate,” said Grande, speaking of one of architect Donald Wexler’s signature Palm Springs houses from the 1960s. That 1.3-acre steel-beam oasis inspires the look of the comedy,

created by “Will & Grace” showrunners Max Mutchnick and David Kohan. In the series, three lifelong gay male friends share a home owned by the...

Parker Posey Tells Lisa Kudrow to Star in ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4 as They Bond Over Sitcom Struggles and Why Phoebe on ‘Friends’ Was ‘A Lot of Work’
Image
Parker Posey and Lisa Kudrow first met making “Clockwatchers,” a 1997 indie comedy in which they play temps in a dull office. Back then, Posey was establishing a reputation as a burgeoning legend of independent film who would soon enough cross over in projects like “You’ve Got Mail” and “Scream 3,” while Kudrow was already a superstar thanks to her role as the quirky Phoebe Buffay on “Friends.”

Both have experienced cult TV fame in the years since — Posey as Jack’s nemesis on “Will & Grace,” Kudrow as a washed-up actress-turned-reality star on “The Comeback” — and both put their stamp on projects this past season. Posey drawled her way through the role of wealthy matriarch Victoria Ratliff on the HBO franchise “The White Lotus,” while Kudrow delivered a sensitive, painful performance as Lydia Morgan, a grieving mother who believes her late son communicates with her through flickering lights on Netflix...

‘Night Court’ Gets Another Grim Verdict After NBC Cancellation
Image
The 2024-2025 TV season has ended, and now audience members can look forward to networks throwing up new shows and brand-new seasons of their favorite ones. However, prior to the network shows taking a break, several shows were axed. Over at NBC, in early May, the verdict came in regarding the network's courtroom comedy, Night Court. Starring Melissa Rauch as Judge Abby Stone, it was announced that the show, which is a reboot of the classic Reinhold Weege sitcom, will not be returning for a fourth season. With NBC locking up the gates of the courthouse, will we see the comedy continue elsewhere?

While we Night Court fans might be hoping that NBC might be willing to shop the comedy series out, recent reports don't offer much hope. Per TV Line, "early efforts to shop the sitcom revival have thus far come up empty," the report says in part, adding,...

Actor Spotlight: George Takei
Image
From humble beginnings to acting, movies, and community leadership, George Takei, born on April 20th, 1937, has worn many hats in his long career. He’s one of our last 3 surviving bridge crew members (along with Walter Koenig and William Shatner), so let’s look at his impressive career and the importance of his presence on Star Trek.

A chaotic youth

Born Hosato Takei, the actor’s father named him George, as George VI’s coronation occurred shortly after Takei’s birth. In 1942, the Takei family was thrown into chaos because of fear and mistrust of Asian people as World War II escalated. They lived in internment camps in Arkansas and California, then lived in poverty in Skid Row, in Los Angeles, after the war ended.

An acting career blooms

As a young man, Takei attended college at Berkley, the University of California at Los Angeles, and even abroad at schools in England and Tokyo.

Why Melissa Rauch's Night Court Was Canceled By NBC
Image
Nostalgia is not, inherently, a bad thing. Classic films like Federico Fellini's "L'Avventura," George Lucas' "American Graffiti," and Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" pine away for carefree youth, but they're also careful to acknowledge that the end of the party is on the horizon. Those tales are told from a place of melancholy remove. To quote Thomas Wolfe, "Going back home is a real boneheaded idea."

But in our glutted age of entertainment, where the competition for eyeballs is fierce, the old-school networks believe that one of their programming strengths is viewers' wistfulness for a simpler time, when there were three or four major broadcast entities providing the lion's share of original content. ABC, NBC, CBS and the 1980s party crasher Fox have their work cut out for them in 2025. They're held to conservative content standards and archaic scheduling strictures. Decades ago, they still had an edge because...
