Good news! She’s dead. Director Jon M. Chu has revealed the first look at Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda in the movie version of “Wicked.”
“You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road? First Look of the #WickedMovie … currently in production in Oz,” Chu wrote on Instagram.

In the darkly lit photos, Erivo is sporting her character’s signature witch hat and broom, while a blonde Grande is donning a striking pink gown as she ascends a staircase.
A prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” “Wicked” recounts everything that happened before Dorothy sauntered down that iconic yellow brick road — and tells the story of the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, known as the Good Witch.

They laid it all on the line, but for two competing acts on this week's semi-finals results show, their fate would come down to the judges. "America's Got Talent" certainly put Sharon Osbourne in a position she didn't want to be in once those votes were revealed.
Two acts made it straight through based on America's votes. No one on the panel was arguing the advancement of Olate Dogs and dance troupe The Untouchables. That left the judges to choose between the two acts with the next-highest voting totals. This week it was David Garibaldi and His Cmyk's alongside Lightwire Theater.
CarterMatt worried that Lightwire wasn't bringing enough uniqueness to the table, after past contestants Team iLuminate and Defying Gravity. Osbourne must have loved it, though. She said it was a travesty that these two groups were in the bottom, and then chose Lightwire to advance.
But she was overruled...

Back when I had Cable.TV, there were lots of shows that I saw come and go before their time. Defying Gravity, Happy Town, and Alcatraz were just a few of the serialized dramas that seemed to get the axe before they ever even had time to develop and grow. I thought about this for a while, and then I thought about other successful serialized dramas. Then I thought about Lost.
Lost was really the one show that actually got me interested in the serialized drama in the first place because, for the most part, it demonstrated the ability to tell a long and sprawling story that was closely connected and rewarded scrutiny. There was really nothing like it at the time, and you have to remember that there really were no other shows out there that demanded the kind of multi-year commitment that Lost required. Lost broke new ground...

Not many can channel the mannerisms of Liza Minnelli, belt “Defying Gravity” or perform a show-stopping tap number eight times a week, but Stephanie J. Block can. The talented star is currently playing Reno Sweeny in Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Back Stage chatted with the Broadway star at the Actor’s Fund Benefit on Thursday, where she discussed going viral and “Anything Goes.” Has seeing Sutton Foster’s interpretation of Reno Sweeny affected your performance?Stephanie J. Block: I think anytime you see someone do their performance you of course are going to recognize wonderful things that are done, inflections that get a particular response from the audience. But, I think every actor will also admit to take pride and want to take on the role in their own fashion and find the character in their own way. By no means am I...

As we count down to tonight’s New Girl finale, it’s safe to say that roommates Jess and Nick (played by Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson) are making inroads to becoming one of TV’s great “will they/won’t they?” couples. Like Sam and Diane, Ross and Rachel, and Blair and Chuck before them, the chemistry between the new girl and the snarky bartender has reached a steady simmer this past season. Between lingering glances over the bathroom sink and an almost kiss, the two have gotten shippers all sorts of frothy over their opposites-attract dynamic.

We're off to see the wizard—and we hear it's going to be nothing like the trip Dorothy took down the yellow brick road. James Franco stars in the upcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful, a prequel to the classic Judy Garland film told from the Wizard's point of view. So will Franco be belting out a cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow?" Or "Defying Gravity" à la Idina Menzel in Broadway's Wicked? Not at all! "It's before the Scarecrow and the Tin Man and Dorothy and all that," Abigail Spencer, who plays the Wizard's assistant May, told me at the recent L.A. That "Glee" has filmed 300 musical numbers is a pretty huge milestone already, but when you consider the fact that said numbers have been delivered over the span of just 50 episodes, it becomes an even more remarkable accomplishment.
Those tracks range from "Respect," Mercedes' New Directions audition in the pilot, to the 300th number, an Adele mash-up the cast filmed in front of an audience of press and crew members on Wednesday (Oct. 26).
Zap2it was there, and while we don't want to spoil too much about the performance, here are the details we will spill:
Mercedes and Santana share the leads on a lady-tastic mashup of Adele's "Rumor Has It" and "Someone Like You," which you will want to rush to your iTunes and purchase as soon as you hear it because it is so fantastic. Since this wasn't a New Directions song, they're joined by Sugar (of course) and another former N.

'I have been known to dumpster-dive," says Lucy Liu. "If I see something really fascinating and warped or distorted, like a piece of metal, I'll jump over and grab it and create something from it." Liu is talking about the roots of an artistic urge that began in the wastelands of Queens, New York, where she grew up. "There was something very warm about sitting in this environment of junk and rubble and discarded things, lost things. I had such a feeling of being at home."
This dumpster-diving "Lucy from the block" image is difficult to square with the elegantly attired woman curled up on a chair in front of me at Salon Vert, a smart London gallery whose walls are currently hung with her work.

This fall's hottest, funniest, sweetest actor stepping up to the plate and generating the most buzz with critics and moviegoers? Is it Brad Pitt … or could it be Chris Pratt? Best known as the lovable goofball Andy the shoe shiner on NBC's Parks and Recreation, Pratt, 32, is earning rave reviews for his portrayal of former Oakland A's baseball player Scott Hatteberg in the Oscar contender Moneyball. Discovered by a director while waiting tables in Maui at the age of 19, the Seattle-area native next stars opposite real-life wife Anna Faris in the romantic comedy What's Your Number, in theaters on Friday.

The last four standing on The Glee Project are certainly not who I would have put in the finals when the show first started. (That was about a year-and-a-half ago at this point, right?) Over the weeks we have seen some surprising exits, some welcomed ones, and some totally disappointing ones.
But now we have Alex, Samuel, Lindsay, and Damian left standing. Yes, four. There was no elimination last night, proving that Ryan Murphy is a guy with a soft spot for a quartet of kids following their dreams.
So let’s size the final four up.

After eight weeks of grueling competition, last night’s episode of Oxygen's The Glee-inspired challenge when Kevin McHale (Glee's Artie Abrams) showed the contenders how to put others first for "Generosity" week. Children from Education Through Music-Los Angeles (Etm-la), a non-profit organization with the mission to provide music education to disadvantaged schools, joined the contenders in performing My Chemical Romance’s "Sing."
In a game changing twist, all four contenders were required to do a last chance performance for Ryan Murphy and guest, Glee co-creator and writer, Ian Brennan, who ultimately decided who would not be called back. Lindsay Pearce belted an impressive version of “Defying Gravity” from the musical “Wicked,” Alex Newell sang a moving tribute to his father with the Gospel hymn “His Eye Is On The Sparrow,” Damian McGinty performed jazz classic “I Gotta Be Me” (made famous by Sammy Davis Jr.), and Samuel Larsen...

A single, dramatic tear streaming down a contestant’s cheek may have altered the outcome of this week’s episode of The Glee Project.
Indeed, head judge and Glee executive producer Ryan Murphy seemed to be on the brink of booting dreadlocked Christian hottie Samuel from the competition, noting that he’d never seen the kid break down and then have to pick himself up by the bootstraps. “When was the last time you cried?” Ryan asked suspiciously. “You’re not the underdog.”

'Glee The 3D Concert Movie' may have only landed in 11th place at the box office its opening weekend, but there's little doubt the teen show is a hit that has made the word "musical" acceptable -- even cool -- with kids. Interest in Fox's highest-rated comedy series, which regularly features Broadway show-stoppers like 'Don't Rain on My Parade,' 'Defying Gravity,' 'On My Own,' and nearly all of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show,' proves that there's no time like the present to introduce kids and teens to movie musicals.
To help you select from the hundreds of musicals available, we've narrowed it down to eight classics that should appeal to your brood depending on their age. In no time they'll be singing show-tunes and practicing their shuffle-hop-step routines -- or at the very least...

Many a brand, whether personal or business, would die a happy death to have a video go viral with over 500,000 views. Even better would be to speak with the creator of a video sensation that did just that in only 12 days since it was uploaded to YouTube.

I confess: I’m entertained by the show, definitely enough to keep watching, but I’m still not exactly riveted. Which is a weird thing for a recapper to admit, but I think it’s worth mentioning, because I’m pretty much the target audience for this show (total fantasy geek and major fan of the book series, but not so much a fan that I’m nitpicky about anything they changed).
That said, there is still much to be admired here, especially since this week’s episode, “Lord Snow,” includes one of my favorite lines … well, in any show ever. But I’ll get to that in a minute.
We open with Boromir arriving in King’s Landing with Arya and Sansa. Right off the bat, Boromir has it out with Jamie Lannister, but neither one says exactly what he means, so I’ll translate:

I’ve said since the third episode of Glee’s first season that the show’s weakest quality was the filler in between the songs. The writing is embarrassingly inconsistent in tone, the characters are prone to erratic shifts in emotion and motivation, and from one week to the next the show’s threads never really connected. The music though, the music was pretty damn good. The song choices, the mash-ups, and the new arrangements on old classics were and remain little nuggets of gold that the Glee fan has to dig out of each episode. Well stop sifting. Glee Encore singles out the big musical numbers and lets you play them back to back, shuffled, or on an individual basis. It's like the "Glee Jukebox" feature on later Glee season releases but it has them all on one disc, not separated across 3 or 4. From here on out, every season...

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, and mass hysteria have come to New York City as today Glee films scenes in the heart of the Big Apple for its second season finale trip to Nationals.

The annual Broadway Beauty Pageant, held at the Peter Norton Symphony Space on Broadway, had its fifth incarnation Monday night, and many stars were in attendance, including the guest panelists Bruce Vilanch, Rachel Dratch, and Carson Kressley. The night's proceeds benefit the Ali Forney Center in New York, a shelter for homeless Glbt teens.
The show itself was hosted Tovah Feldshuh (Golda's Balcony), who presided over the just-slightly American Idol-esque contest, which featured five Broadway chorus boys: Matt Anctil (La Cage Aux Folles), Michael Cusumano (Chicago), Raymond J Lee (Anything Goes), Brandon Rubendall (Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark), and James Tabeek (Mary Poppins).

In her spare time, Disney animator Heidi Jo Gilbert put together a sensational animated storyboard to pitch her studio and composer Stephen Schwartz on an animated adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked. For those unfamiliar with the musical, it's based on the book by Gregory Maguire and takes a look at The Wizard of Oz from the Wicked Witch's perspective. Gilbert took arguably the musical's best number, "Defying Gravity", and transformed it into what could have been a rousing animated sequence. Unfortunately for Ms. Gilbert and for all of us, I believe that Universal currently holds the screen rights to Wicked (as the project languishes in development hell looking for a director). Hit the jump to defy gravity in animated form. Images via Gilbert's official website. Video via The Daily What. ---...

We came across this clip thanks to Entertainment Weekly and just had to post it!
This. Is. Awesome.
Heidi Jo Gilbert is an animator trained at CalArts. She put together this storyboard of the characters from Wicked singing Defying Gravity.
Accompanying the video posted on YouTube and her blog is this message to the composer and lyricist for Wicked, the Musical, Stephen Schwartz:
"Dear Stephen Schwartz, Please let me make this into an animated film. I promise I won't let you down!"
Wicked Animated Storyboard
She also adds, "I also just want to be clear, Disney is in no way affiliated with this. There's been confusion. I've worked for them, but I did this on my own time. I just love it, and would love to make an animated version of it!"
We would love for you to make an animated version of it too!

Dial 1-800-About-Damn-Time: Fox’s Glee is back on Sunday, and in the post-Super Bowl slot, no less! There’s crazy-loud buzz right now about a football-field mashup of “Thriller” and “Heads Will Roll,” but if that performance is going to join the pantheon of the show’s all-time greatest musical numbers, it’ll have to leapfrog over these 11 performances. Without further ado, here’s TVLine’s countdown.
Exclusive Glee Clip: Watch Sue’s Killer Post-Super Bowl Stunt!
11. “Dog Days Are Over” | Mercedes, Tina, and New Directions (“Special Education,” Season 2) | The sectionals number that should’ve been, but inexplicably wasn’t.

Watching the sneak peek of the Warblers’ cover of Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” from this Sunday’s post-Super Bowl episode (embedded below), I had two thoughts: Thank goodness Will didn’t sing this (I envision a lot of Matthew Morrison’s signature spin move), and I’m buying that on iTunes (done). That made wonder, what’s the most played Glee song on your iPod? I’ve got one Glee song in my Top 25 most played — “Bust Your Windows.” The rest of my Glee Top 10, in order: ”Teenage Dream,” “Defying Gravity,” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (tie), “Last Christmas,...

Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West", which inspired Broadway's musical "Wicked", will serve as the source material for an eight-hour miniseries in development at ABC reports TV Line.
Salma Hayek will produce and Erk Jendersen ("Band of Brothers") is penning the series which insiders stress will be very much based on the novel, not the musical, so there'll be no song numbers such as "Defying Gravity". This means it will essentially serve as a prequel/companion piece to L. Frank Baum's "Oz" books.
The announcement in now way effects Universal's planned film adaptation of the musical itself, or the various other Oz-themed films in the works.

Don't worry, people who hate musicals: it's based on the book! Which, for anyone who's never read it, is very different from the story that ended up on Broadway/in the dreams of every gay boy under the age of eighteen. ABC and Ventanarosa Productions — the company founded by Salma Hayek which also brought us Ugly Betty — will be teaming up to bring us an eight-hour miniseries based (they stress) off Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked. This means there will be a lot less "Defying Gravity" and a lot more weird sex. (And I do mean weird: this takes place in a world where there are sentient animals, after all, and (slight spoiler) several characters do visit an underground burlesque show/sex club, if my memory serves me right. A tiger was involved. That probably won't make it to [...]...

Was the Kurt Hummel storyline on Glee as revolutionary as its fans say it is?
Some say no. They pick apart Glee's bits and pieces – storylines, characterizations, wardrobe choices, casting – and point out there are things here we've seen before. The harassed effeminate queer high school kid was done by Rickie Vasquez (Wilson Cruz) on My So-Called Life all the way back in 1994, and Queer as Folk's Justin Taylor (Randy Harrison) spent the show's entire first season being slammed into lockers by a football player in the hallways of his high school. [For more, on these characters see our companion article, Life Before Kurt.]
But those who say Kurt Hummel and his still-developing story aren't something new are wrong. Of course we've seen some of their components before – in fact, many of us have lived them. But at this moment in time, elements both external and internal to Glee have come together to create a phenomenon of popular culture that...

Chris Colfer, also known as the fashion-smart singing sensation Kurt Hummel on Fox’s “Glee” who razzle-dazzled his way to an Emmy nomination, is about to parlay some of his newfound fame onto the silver screen.
Variety snagged the news that Colfer will write and star in a new comedy titled “Struck by Lightning” for producer David Permut, who has shown a knack for teen silliness with “Charlie Bartlett” and “Youth in Revolt.”
There’s no plot details as of yet, but Colfer’s screenplay is said to be in the spirit of recently-departed high school bard John Hughes. Clearly Colfer took “The Breakfast Club” anthem “Don’t You Forget About Me” literally.
Although this is not the plot (yet), we’d hope the story revolves around an awkward teen who becomes a falsetto-voiced superstar and crime-fighting ninja after he is hit by a lightning bolt. After all, young shinobi...

This is Oliver Richman. At the tender age of only 9 years old, his parents and grandparents (who feature prominently in the following videos) plucked tiny Oliver from obscurity, put a microphone in his hands, hired Martin Scorcese’s cinematographer, and attempted to turn him into a Youtube singing sensation. The next Bieber. The next Greyson. Oliver. Just one slight problem. Oliver’s videos are comically terrible. Truly and really just bad. Here is his cover of “Defying Gravity,” with an extremely necessary cameo by his admittedly fantastic Grandmother at the very beginning. His singing is fine — not amazing, just fine (says the girl who used to kill covering Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger” at 5). But Oliver is 4 and a half solid feet of walking stage parent lunch meat. Just a young boy thrust into the internet spotlight by parents who don’t understand that this will be around to haunt the poor boy Forever.

ABC seems to be sticking to its strategy of running original scripted series in the summer, putting on the fast track a new project from feature writer Greg Poirier (National Treasure: Book of Secrets) and Grant Scharbo and Gina Matthews, the producers behind ABC's recent summer series The Gates. Steve Shill, who just won an Emmy for his directing work on Dexter, is reportedly attached to direct the pilot for the untitled spy drama eyed for next summer. While it has received a script order, there is already talk about 3-5 back-up scripts. And feelers have been sent out to writers to join the potential series. The project, from ABC Studios and Scharbo and Matthews' Little Engine, is a female-centered spy show described as Taken meets The Bourne Identity. ABC had mixed results with its original scripted series this past summer: Canadian import Rookie Blue was the top-rated new scripted...

The second annual Fashion's Night Out was an amazing success as stylish shoppers, designers and stars took over Manhattan stores yesterday evening. Sarah Jessica Parker has played a big part in the charitable event since its inception last year and stopped by Fred Leighton as well as joining Victoria Beckham, Nicole Richie and Brian Atwood at Bergdorf Goodman. Leighton Meester posed pretty at Roger Vivier while her Gossip Girl costar Blake Lively was off at the Toronto Film Festival for The Town. Charlize Theron joined the woman behind it all, Anna Wintour, at the Dior boutique while Rachel Bilson showed off her legs at the Sunglasses Hut. Sjp and Anna both made multiple stops checking out the parties and fantastic memorable moments, like Michael Kors singing "Defying gravity" and men in full body makeup, throughout the night. Jessica Alba's sparkly mini dress at the Ralph Lauren store is currently your pick for best dressed!

Thanks to the Internet, a headshot and résumé don't have to be an actor's sole calling card anymore. A website can help you raise your visibility and spotlight your talent. And just as a quality headshot and résumé can brand you an astute pro, so can a top-notch website. But the opposite is also true: A confusing or inferior site can frustrate casting directors. So consider the following advice from some Web-savvy sources.Cost Not only is there the cost of designing and building your website to consider; there's also the fee for registering the domain name (the www.yournamehere.com address) and another for hosting your site on a server, as well as the cost to update the site regularly—unless you're tech-savvy enough to do it yourself. Expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred dollars to $1,000 or more, depending on the designer and how much content you have,...

Welcome to your Thursday morning television briefing. Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello talks to CSI: NY executive producers Pam Veasey and Zachary Reiter about the departure of Melina Kanakaredes from the crime procedural and how they'll handle Stella's exit, given that Kanakaredes will not be reprising her role this fall. "We’re giving her a noble exit,” said Reiter. "We chose not to go the route of killing her off or having her go missing. We felt that would weigh too heavily on the team." However, the action will instead pick up a few months after the events of the season finale and reveal that Stella moved to New Orleans. "She left to run a lab there," Veasey told Ausiello. "And she picked that city because it’s the city of Katrina, the city of Bp oil, the city where people are looking for someone to lend a hand. She’ll...

Kris Allen can count on at least one music superstar -- Keith Urban -- if he needs anything for his resume.

Three-time Grammy winner Urban considers the "American Idol" approach valid.

Last time out, I spent a little time talking about "Defying Gravity," "Eastwick," "Dollhouse" and "The Ghost Whisperer." Each being a genre show that left the air in the 2009-10 season. Today I continue my look at the dearly departed. "FlashForward" started out strong. Its pilot episode was cinematic. It outlined the goals for the series, and was set at a good pace. After viewing it, I thought it was an easy winner. Then the second episode was released. The show immediately fell into the trap of a limited concept. They started stretching it out. I admit when you have 20-plus episodes to fill, you sometimes have to go slow. But nothing of note appeared to happen in those early episodes. And that is when you need something to happen. Then they had an extended break in the middle ...
