    Moroccan roll

Made by a director whose specialty was the documentary "Itto" was entirely filmed on location in Morocco ;it begins with a sentence by Marechal Lyautey :" those men are different;that does not mean they are inferior" .He was speaking of the natives of course. The depiction of their lives is vivid and precise ,they speak their own language, and sometimes there are no subtitles. This is the best side of the movie, for it shows a people's way of life with honesty,at a time when most of the people never traveled .

The story has not worn well.It involves a medical officer ("Le Toubib") who tries his best to cure the Arabs (and their sheep). His wife often feels lonely .Miloud and Itto (played by a French actress ,which seems strange for all the people from Morocco are played by Morrocan actors)are young natives who just got married .The doctor saves Miloud's life and the newly-wed now will fight with the "Roumis" (= Infidels),a thing his wife and her father cannot comprehend .

Compare with Duvivier's "la Bandera" (1935) where the Arabs the legionnaires call the b...... do not even appear during the final fight.
