Maestro Review: Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein Biopic Hits a Bum Note
Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper’s Maestro opens presumptuously with a quote that Leonard Bernstein uttered during a lecture he gave at Harvard University in 1976: “A work of art does not answer questions, it provokes them; and its essential meaning is in the tension between the contradictory answers.” To some degree, the quote encapsulates Cooper and co-writer Josh Singer’s mosaic-like method in attempting to capture Bernstein as a human being—one that lays the man’s contradictions bare without overt psychologizing. It also, though, inevitably raises the question of whether Cooper’s film approaches the breadth and majesty of its subject.

Maybe no biopic, however sensitively done, can come close to encompassing the entirety of Bernstein’s life. This was a man so filled with passion for music in all its forms that he couldn’t help but let it out not only in the music he composed, but also on...

The Resurrection Of Jake The Snake Review Roundup: What Critics Had To Say About The Wrestling Doc
Image
The Resurrection of Jake the Snake received mostly positive reviews for its deep, raw, and inspiring portrayal of Jake Roberts' struggle with substance abuse and his journey towards recovery. Some critics accused the documentary of being self-promotion for Ddp Yoga and called it a pilot for a show called "Celebrity Wrestler Rehab." Despite the accusations of self-promotion, the film's heart and honesty still resonate with viewers and can inspire anyone, whether they are a wrestling fan or not.

When The Resurrection of Jake the Snake reviews were released, there was a small divide between critics. Directed by Steve Yu, The Resurrection of Jake the Snake is a documentary that tells the story of professional wrestler Jake "the Snake" Roberts who was incredibly famous and popular in the 1980s. The documentary primarily explores Roberts' life between 2012 and 2014 in which he attended a rehabilitation program, which involved a yoga course called Ddp Yoga,...

Disney's New Alien Movie Cutting Ripley Is Actually Good News For The Franchise
Image
"Alien: Romulus will be unconnected to previous films, allowing for a fresh story without the constraints of existing characters and developments." "Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that she will not reprise her role as Ripley, eliminating potential timeline complications and avoiding the need for forced narratives." "The Alien franchise needs to move beyond Ripley and the original stories, focusing on the terrifying creature itself and introducing a new cast of characters to revitalize the series."

Ripley's absence from Alien: Romulus is great news for the new installment. Currently in production and on track for a 2024 release, Alien: Romulus will serve as the ninth entry in the franchise. One of the more exciting prospects when Disney bought Fox was what they might do with the Alien franchise, which previously had a fourth Ridley Scott entry titled Alien: Awakening in development, designed to close out the prequel trilogy he started with Prometheus and continued with Alien: Covenant.

Stephen Amell in Arrow (2012)
Arrow Recap: Take Your Daughter to Hack Day
Stephen Amell in Arrow (2012)
This week on The CW’s Arrow, it was a nuclear family affair when Felicity recruited her criminal father to help thwart Damien Darhk’s annihilation of (most of) mankind.

PhotosArrow’s Katie Cassidy Makes Some Noise as Flash‘s Black Siren

Having seized possession of the Rubicon algorithm (which as Felicity notes was a very bad idea to create in the first place), Darhk uses it to arm and initiate launch sequences for nuclear missiles from every Nato ally. Knowing that with every death, Darhk will become that much more powered/unstoppable, Felicity seeks out her super-hacker dad,...

'Arrow' is addicted to resurrection, will bring Another character back from the dead
Stephen Amell in Arrow (2012)
If "Arrow" had an alternate name, it would be called "Resurrection", or at least "All Hail the Lazarus Pit". I say this — mostly in jest — because "Arrow" is bring another character back from the dead this week in the episode titled "Brotherhood". While Thea (Willa Holland) and Sara (Caity Lotz) needed the help of the Lazarus Pit to bring them back, this character doesn't need magic, he needs discovery. Much like Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), who was thought to be dead until Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) and Curtis (Echo Kellum) discovered his message, this character was also only presumed dead. Who is this mysterious character, now returning to the land of the living? Andrew Diggle, John Diggle's believed-to-be-dead brother. Andy is played by Eugene Byrd, whose acting credits include "Bones", "8 Mile", "Heroes", and previous flashback episodes of "Arrow". According to John Diggle (David Ramsey), Andy was killed by Deadshot (Michael Rowe...

10 sequels that ignored previous films
In the wake of the Alien 5 news, here are 10 franchise sequels that also ignored at least one previous film.

We all have moments in our lives we'd prefer to forget, and so too do filmmakers. So what do you do when a movie franchise starts to go off the rails? Simple, just forget that the lesser films in the series never happened.

News recently broke that director Neill Blomkamp's taking this approach to the Alien universe. Recent interviews with both he and returning star Sigourney Weaver have revealed that Blomkamp's forthcoming sequel will not necessarily follow the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, and pick up the story from Aliens instead (although he has since given a brief update on that).

Of course, we'll have to wait and see exactly how all this pans out. But it's by no means the first time in history that a film's...

Arrow Recap: Reunited and It Feels So Meh
Admittedly, death has never been too high-stakes on Arrow. The show’s entire premise stems from Oliver Queen’s unexpected reappearance five years after “drowning” in the North China Sea. Other characters follow suit in that regard: Malcolm Merlyn, Slade Wilson, Deadshot, and even Felicity’s ex, Cooper, each get “Surprise!” resurrected. (Shado, Moira Queen, and Sara Lance, at least the second time around, do not fare as well. What’s a girl gotta do to come back from the dead around here?) That Arrow employs this plot device often shouldn’t be unexpected, as coming back to life is a common comic-book trope.Save for Oliver’s reemergence in the pilot episode, the return of these presumed-dead characters, all villains, were surprise plot-twists meant to leave the audience with dropped jaws and freaked-out tweets. This time, with Oliver Resurrection: Part Deux, for once, we’re in on the surprise.

The top 25 underappreciated films of 2009
Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 20 Feb 2014 - 05:40

The unloved films of 2009 provide the focus in our final list of the 2000s' overlooked greats...

The year 2009 will partly be remembered as the year Avatar dominating the box office, with audiences flocking to see James Cameron's leafy pulp epic in shimmering 3D. Making almost $2.8bn worldwide, Avatar was a true behemoth, besting Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and hastening a rush of 3D films in the years that followed.

Films such as 2012, Sherlock Holmes and boozy comedy The Hangover were also among the top 10, but as always, some of the most memorable and individual films of the year were far from the most financially successful. So to round off our series of underrated flicks of the 2000s, here's our selection of 2009's overlooked films...

Marilyn Chambers Biopic For "Blue" Director?
"Blue Is The Warmest Color" director Abdellatif Kechiche has revealed that he's been asked to next helm a biopic about Marilyn Chambers.

Chambers was a model and actress with a wholesome, all-American girl image who was best known as the 'Ivory Soap girl' in commercials.

That changed in 1972 when she starred in the legendary porn film "Behind the Green Door" which includes one of the first interracial hardcore sex scenes put to film. It also ends with an infamous sequence involving her, three men and trapeze equipment.

Chambers went onto a career in porn with bestselling films like "Insatiable" and "Resurrection of Eve," along with more regular movie work such as David Cronenberg's "Rabid". She came close to being cast in a number of major features in development in the late 1970s.

Kechiche actually pitched several films, including the Chambers biopic, to Wild Bunch before he went to work on 'Blue'.

Exclusive: Stephen Romano Rides the Resurrection Express to the Big Screen
We're big supporters of author, screenwriter, and artist Stephen Romano, mainly because not only is he uber-talented, but he's also just as sick as we are. God bless him! Read on for the first details on Resurrection Express as it heads toward the screen.

"I am happy to announce that I have officially sealed the deal with a pair of real Hollywood legends to bring my highly acclaimed novel Resurrection Express to the big screen," Romano tells us exclusively.

Romano continues, "I really love the book. It's one of my favorite things I've done so far. Simon and Schuster really took a chance on it because it's a batshit-crazy, ultra-violent thrill ride filed with over-the-top action, horrific torture, nonstop intrigue and crazy plot twists. It's about a half-mad hacker/martial artist named Elroy Coffin, who gets word that his dead wife may still be alive, and all he has to...

Prometheus Blu-ray – First Details
The most anticipated and polarising film of 2012 is coming to Blu-ray later this year and details of the bonus content have been found on Amazon.fr.

Anyone hoping for a significant number of deleted scenes to fill in the film’s many plot holes will be disappointed as there are only 15 minutes worth. But the most exciting thing on the disc may be the inclusion of the first and final draft of the script by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.

Prometheus began as a straight Alien prequel written by Jon Spaihts until Damon Lindelof conducted a re-write that became the final product. If they do actually include Spaihts’ original draft, it will be fascinating to see how he originally planned to link it to Alien and if it would have actually made a better film.

You also get Ridley Scott providing an audio commentary so it will be very interesting...

Reel Rumbles #38: ‘Terminator Salvation’ vs. ‘Alien Resurrection’
In This Corner…

In recent years, there’s been a number of once-dormant franchises – particularly franchises that began in the 1980s – being resurrected with a third sequel. Not every franchise warrants a fourth movie, but we’ve recently seen Rambo, Live Free or Die Hard, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull…to varying degrees of success. (Surely, it will not be too much longer before some genius decides to make Back to the Future Part IV.)

There are two science fiction franchises, however, that share a very similar pattern of quality in their four movies. The first two films in both series are widely considered classics (and, in fact, all four films rank in the Top 100 of Flickchart’s list of the Best Films of All Time). Both had their reputations tarnished by a lackluster third film (yet even those movies have their defenders). And both had...

Released on DVD by Matchbox Films on June 27 is British independent horror flick Siren.

Described as Dead Calm meets The Hunger, Siren is the debut directorial feature of former art director the late Andrew Hull (P2, Queer As Folk USA, Get Over It, Resurrection).

The film features Eoin Macken (Merlin, Centurion), Anna Skellern (The Descent Part 2), Tereza Srbova (Inkheart, St Trinian's, Eichmann, Eastern Promises) and Anthony Jabre and boasts a musical theme based around La girl group Warpaint's song Elephants.

Hoping to escape their busy city lives for a weekend of sailing off Tunisia's Mediterranean coast, Ken (Macken), his girlfriend Rachel (Skellern) and her old college friend Marco (Jabre) see their plans hit a snag when they go to the aid of a castaway.

Raving incoherently and bleeding from his ears, the man dies on board the boat prompting the three friends, fearing reprisals from the local foreign authorities, to...

Kiefer Sutherland joins the heist in Sleight of Hand
Source: FilmShaft - Kiefer Sutherland joins the heist in Sleight of Hand

Kiefer Sutherland has joined Sleight of Hand, a crime thriller about a heist which gets a gang of criminals in a whole lot of trouble. Although best known as a writer for films such as ‘Resurrection’ and ‘Crime Spree’, Brad Mirman will be directing, and the film follows what happens when a group of small-time criminals In Paris inadvertently gain possession of a rare gold coin that belongs to a notorious French gangster.

The cast also includes Gerard Depardieu, Thomas Jane, Til Schweiger, Jon Lovitz, Johnny Hallyday and Eric Cantona. The rights to the film will be sold at the impending Cannes Film Festival. Lars Von Trier’s film ‘Melancholia’ will also be making its debut at the festival, in which Sutherland also stars. So it will certainly be a busy festival for him.

To understand why the gory second season finale of V was such an exciting hour of television, it helps to consider the final image of Crank: High Voltage, easily the most existential movie to feature a sex scene in the middle of a horse race. [Blu-Review] Alien Anthology
Finally, one of the box-sets we’ve all been waiting for! The Alien franchise is one of those series that’s perfect for Blu-Ray. It is a benchmark for the format and you can check out our full review of The Alien Anthology below.

Alien:

How much can one say about the timeless classic sci-fi horror film that hasn’t been said before? Well, very little. This is still Ridley Scott‘s finest film to date and it hasn’t aged a bit. Every beat of tension still lands with a punch, the alien is still one of the best ever to be put on-screen, and it’s atmosphere stays eerie and unsettling throughout.

Alien is the king of the monster movies. Very few horror films can achieve the level of investment Scott and co. did with making you actually care for the ensemble, even outside of Ripley. What...

[DVD Review] Alien Anthology
Let’s level with each other: you’ve already seen all of the (or at least the first two) Alien films, and have formed an opinion roughly in alignment with the rest of society that the first two in the series are excellent, but that the latter two were largely ruined by a combination of repetitiveness and studio interference. You probably already have the Alien Quadrilogy, and have ample resources to find out what new supplemental materials are featured on this release (and they are legion). But as much as anything, you don’t need me to tell you what each of these films is about, what characters appear in any of them, and why you should go out of your way to see any of them. The Alien franchise is established in a way that few are, with its rules, aesthetic, and central themes renowned to those who have...

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Looking back at Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection
Our look back at the Alien films concludes with Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s divisive 1997 instalment, Alien: Resurrection…

The upturned nose. The doleful eyes. The wobbly, gelatinous skin. Back in 1997, Alien: Resurrection’s Newborn, the half human, half xenomorph that appears at the movie’s climax, was too, too much for your humble writer.

It remains the only time, before or since, that I’ve had to restrain myself from either heckling the cinema screen like a madman, or walking out of the theatre in a rage.

Everything about its movement and design ran counter to my perception of what the Alien films should be, and like a petulant child, I vowed never to watch Resurrection again.

At the very least, I hope my little series of Alien Anthology retrospectives has demonstrated one thing: my enduring affection and enthusiasm for the movies, and the remarkable creature that sprang from the collective imaginations of Hr Giger,...

Dancing With The Stars Announces New Season Cast – Does Anyone Care?
I have to admit from the start that the popularity of Dancing with the Stars completely eludes me. It was an interesting bit of fun the first time around, but mainly for its novelty value. There was a nice combination of showcasing famous people, and giving them something to do that was mildly entertaining without being embarrassing simply for the sake of being embarrassing.

The second and third seasons had a few moments of interest, even if the biggest tune-in sell was watching people who weren’t any good, rather than watching any “talent” take shape. Now, however, I just don’t get it anymore. Much like the Circus of the Stars of days gone by, the novelty is over, “Stars” is becoming more and more loosely defined, and we are thus at a point where we have to come clean and admit we’re watching ballroom dancing. And, much...

Blu-ray News: Grindhouse Confirmed for October 5th; Alien Anthology Arrives on October 26th
In addition to the excellent Criterion Blu-ray news we reported earlier today, we have two more items that will please HD cinephiles. First up, Blu-ray.com confirms a story we ran a couple weeks ago that hinted the Blu-ray of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse was on the way. While there are no details about the set (although Edgar Wright said he did a commentary track for his fake trailer, Don’t), you should mark your calendars for October 5th. I’m excited to see these films put back together because that’s how they were meant to be seen.

Hit the jump for news on the highly-anticipated Alien Anthology box set.

I am convinced that studios are conspiring to bankrupt me on October 26th because that’s when Alien Anthology hits shelves. It also happens to be the date when the Blu-rays of the Back to the Future...

Marilyn Chambers
Marilyn Chambers, known for her erotic films of the 1970s, died Sunday at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Canyon Country. She would have turned 57 on April 22. The cause of death is still unknown; Chambers was found by her daughter. Born Marilyn Ann Taylor (or Marilyn Ann Briggs) in Westport, Connecticut, in 1952, former Ivory Snow soap-box girl Chambers became an adult-film superstar after appearing in the 1972 production Behind the Green Door, which became a sensation of sorts because the actress was seen having sex with a black man, Johnny Keyes. Directed by Artie and Jim Mitchell, Behind the Green Door became one of the first sexually explicit films to be widely released in the United States. Among Chambers other sex films are Resurrection of Eve (1973); Beyond De Sade (1979); Insatiable (1980), with John Holmes; and A Night on the Town (1983). Additionally, she had the lead in David Cronenberg’s 1977 [...]...

Exclusive Interview: Halloween Comics' Stefan Hutchinson
Stefan Hutchinson is a Michael Myers nut, or as he likes to call it, “The Shape behind the Shape”. He burst onto the horror scene back in 2006, directing and co-writing the intricate documentary Halloween: 25 Years Of Terror, featuring behind the scenes interviews with cast and crew from the 2003 Halloween anniversary convention. In 2008, Halloween Comics was presented to the world of comic books with the help of Devils Due Publishing, and Stefan Hutchinson tackled the writing duties for its initial release, Halloween: Nightdance, which was a Fangoria Top 10 book for 2008. He is the prominent writer for Halloween Comics, continuing on with 30 Years Of Terror, Autopsis and The First Death Of Laurie Strode, along with the upcoming The Mark Of Thorn series featuring that mysterious “Man in Black” from Halloween 6. Fangoria caught up Stefan during a major writing session to ask some questions on the successful launch of Halloween Comics,...
