Before Alita: Battle Angel, the idea that any live-action anime film would be worth watching was a little ludicrous. For whatever reason, there were very few good live-action anime films. The number of ones worth watching could be counted maybe on one hand and many of them were made in Japan. Rurouni Kenshin, Death Note, Bleach, and Parasyte had some effective adaptations, while more obscure manga like Oldboy and Ichi the Killer were adapted into such amazing films that people often forget they were manga first.

But American adaptations? Ghost in the Shell is controversial, sure, but it and Alita are leagues above the likes of Dragonball Evolution, Fist of the North Star, and our attempt at a Death Note film. And even Japan has misfires, as seen with Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Devilman. Still, there...

For pretty much as long as I’ve been seriously gaming, Dynasty Warriors has been around. The series got its start in 1997, but it was the first sequel that introduced the formula it has become known for — large-scale battles set against the backdrop of Chinese history. In the 20+ years since, developer Omega Force has replicated the blueprint for everything from Japan’s Sengoku period to the absurd world of Fist of the North Star. Rather than port the newest entry over for the franchise’s arrival on the Switch, publisher Koei instead went with Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition, an enhanced version of a celebrated earlier edition.
Although this is the first Dynasty Warriors game to hit the Switch, it’s not the first “Musou” title to appear on the platform. If you are familiar with 2018’s Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, you should be at least somewhat at home with Xtreme Legends.

If you're a fan of Fist Of The North Star, or just anime in general, you're going to be very happy with what you see in this video! Some new gameplay for the game (called Hokuto ga Gotoku in Japan) just hit the web, and visually, it looks fantastic! Gameplay wise think the battles look a bit repetitive, but that might just be from the way the guy demoing is playing the game. Beyond the repetitive punches and mask ripping, the special kills are as insane as they were in the anime!
The game is expected to launch February 22nd, 2018 in Japan, and unfortunately, there is no release date for anyone else at this time. Let's hope this game gets some love stateside so we can see it come to the PS4 over here!

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Doberman Cop Starring Sonny Chiba will be Available on Blu-ray and DVD on July 4th From Arrow Video
Released just as the popularity of yakuza movies was waning in Japan, and as the country’s film industry was undergoing some fundamental shifts, Doberman Cop is a unique entry in the career of director Kinji Fukasaku (Battles Without Honor and Humanity, Cops vs Thugs), and reunited him with star Shinichi “Sonny” Chiba (The Street Fighter, Wolf Guy) in an American-style crime movie that mixes gunplay and pulp fiction with martial arts and lowbrow comedy to create one of their most entertaining films.
Based on a popular manga by “Buronson” (creator of Fist of the North Star), Doberman Cop follows the fish-out-of-water adventures of Joji Kano (Chiba), a tough-as-nails police officer from Okinawa who arrives in Tokyo’s Kabuki-cho nightlife district to investigate the savage murder and mutilation of an island girl...

Many of us know the Super Nintendo classics, but do you remember all of the console's most underappreciated games?
This year marks 25 years since the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was released; a momentous occasion for video game fans growing up in the 90s. Even though the Big N has released four more consoles since, many Nintendo fans would say the Snes is still the best console that the House of Mario has ever released.
A lot of the console's success has to do its with roster of games. From third-party titles to Nintendo's own franchises, this was an era that showcased the platform's total dominance over the industry, even as the Sega Genesis proved to be a strong competitor. It’s not difficult to see why: just looking at Nintendo's own IPs, it's easy to argue that Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and The Legend Of Zelda...

You've played all the hits, but have you ever tried these underrated Snes classics?
Even though the Big N has released five more consoles since the Super Nintendo, many Nintendo fans would say the Snes is still the best console that the House of Mario has ever released.
Much of the console's success has to do with its roster of games, of course. From third-party titles to Nintendo's own franchises, this was an era—from 1990 to 1996—that showcased the platform's total dominance over the industry, even as the Sega Genesis proved to be a strong competitor—and we all know who won that console arms race in the end. It’s not difficult to see why: Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past are the very best games in their respective series. And that's not even counting games made by outside studios,...

1985 was the year of Back To The Future, Rocky IV and Rambo II. But what about these 20 movies, that also deserve a fair share of love?
Thirty years ago, Marty McFly was riding high with the smash hit Back To The Future, while Sylvester Stallone enjoyed his most successful year yet with the one-two punch of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. It was an era of family sci-fi and teen comedies and bullet-spraying action, where The Breakfast Club and Teen Wolf rubbed shoulders with Death Wish 3 and Commando. Then there were low-key dramas like Out Of Africa and The Color Purple, which were both awards magnets at the Oscars.
Away from all those big hits, 1985 saw the release of a wealth of less successful movies, some of which found a second life on the then-huge home video circuit. Here's our pick of 20 underappreciated films from the year of Rambo,...

Western, English-language, live-action adaptations of Japanese manga haven't so far fared terribly well. Things like Fist Of The North Star and Dragonball: Evolution are probably best forgotten, while Akira can't catch a break, talk of a Shane Black Death Note went nowhere until Adam Wingard picked it up recently, and we haven't even heard much about Dreamworks' Ghost In The Shell lately. Nevertheless, the vast Naruto franchise is the latest to enter American development, with Lionsgate negotiating for the film rights, and Michael Gracey in the frame to direct.First published in 1997, Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto currently stretches to 72 volumes of manga and 220 anime episodes. Not including spin-offs like the ten anime movies. The manga has more than 200 million copies in print, and is the third best-selling in history, after One Piece and Dragon Ball.Obviously the story is far too vast to summarise quickly, but the basic premise revolves around the adolescent Naruto Uzumaki,...

As the Robotech film moves ahead, we look at the anime's history, knotty rights issues, cultural impact, and earlier failed film attempts.
"In the year 1999, high above Macross island in the South Pacific, a phenomenal event occurred in the skies which altered the cause of human history..."
With a blaze of animated light, a huge alien space craft bursts through Earth's atmosphere and collides with a city, reducing its buildings to atoms in an instant.
That dramatic opening heralded the arrival of Robotech - and American television had never seen anything quite like it. Here was animated show which told a sprawling saga set across multiple epochs, full of alien invaders and exotic transforming robots. Its characters seemed low-key and somehow real; there were brave pilots, nervy new-recruits, romances and love triangles. There was action, but also comedy, tragedy and pathos. It even provided a generous helping of bubblegum pop music.

From Marine Boy and Thundercats to Cities Of Gold and Akira, we look at the TV shows and movies that introduced the UK to Japanese anime
One evening in 1994, the BBC screened a documentary simply called Manga. Presented by Jonathan Ross, it showcased the rising popularity of Japanese animation, largely focusing on the output of Manga Entertainment, whose dubbed VHS releases had made a huge impact on anime fans and caused a certain amount of consternation among the mainstream press.
For British viewers, the anime boom took a long time to arrive. In America, Japanese shows like Kimba The White Lion, Gigantor and Astro Boy were a common sight on television in the 1960s, yet it took until the late 70s and 80s, and a string of European-Japanese co-productions, before anime finally began to find a hold on UK television.

A weird truth: Even in the midst of the current comic book gold-rush, major studios can't seem to get a good anime or manga adaptation off the ground—although the influence of those works can be seen everywhere. This weekend's Big Hero 6 is based on a Marvel comic that's heavily (perhaps even problematically) inspired by anime and manga. As tangentially connected to the art form as Big Hero 6 is, could it be the harbinger of a sea change in Hollywood's approach to manga and anime? Tackling this question can be kind of tricky—after all, "anime" and "manga...

How did an 80s Van Damme action flick emerge from a failed Spider-Man movie and Masters Of The Universe sequel? Ryan takes a look...
Cannon Films was in deep trouble by 1987. Its boom years, between the late 70s to the mid-80s, were largely thanks to an eclectic and hurriedly-made collection of B-movies: Chuck Norris action pictures, Charles Bronson revenge flicks and lots of things with the word ‘ninja’ in the title.
Thanks to its outsider status and anything-for-a-buck approach to filmmaking, Cannon Films became a major name in Hollywood, the grinning faces of its brusque founders - producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus - frequently appearing in TV news reports and tinseltown trade papers.
But in the mid-80s, Golan and Globus began to change their strategy. While they would still make Death Wish sequels and Chuck Norris pics, they began to dabble in making more expensive films,...

Katsuhiro Otomo's classic animated film is returning to UK cinemas to mark Manga Entertainment's 25th anniversary. We take a look back...
For anime, 1988 was an extraordinary year. That April, Studio Ghibli released My Neighbor Totoro and Grave Of The Fireflies, two films that would soon cement its already growing reputation as one of Japan's finest animation houses. And three months later, writer, artist and director Katsuhiro Otomo would unveil Akira, one of the most important and influential animated features of the entire decade.
Based on Otomo's best-selling, voluminous manga of the same name (which was still being published when its adaptation was released), Akira is set in a 2019 Neo-Tokyo balanced on a knife-edge. Rival motorcycle gangs fight in the streets. Revolutionaries and religious fanatics clash with the police. Behind the scenes, the military and sneaky politicians tussle for control, while scientists carry out strange experiments on grey-faced children.

Hokuto no Ken, better known to English speakers as Fist of the North Star, is a long-lasting and iconic Japanese manga and anime franchise, which received a video game adaptation earlier this generation in the form of Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage. Recently, as part of the celebration revolving around the series’ 30th anniversary, Tecmo-Koei has once again taken their gameplay template for Dynasty Warriors and applied it to the post-apocalyptic beat-downs this series is known for, creating the sequel, Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage 2. The end result, while not truly awful, is ultimately too mediocre, basic, and repetitive to get much fun out of.
The story mode in Ken’s Rage 2 takes place in a Mad Max-like post-apocalyptic wasteland, with villagers struggling to survive and gangs of punk-attired thugs causing trouble. The majority of the story focuses on a wanderer named Kenshiro,...
